Ton Caanen will coach Maccabi Netanya in the upcoming soccer season. The Dutchman, who called the shots at Maccabi Tel Aviv this past season, tied things up yesterday with Maccabi Netanya owner Daniel Jammer and club manager Eyal Berkovic and then put pen to paper on a one-year contract, worth $60,000.
Marco Balbul will work alongside Caanen as assistant coach, with both to come under the eye of manager Berkovic, whom Caanen oversaw last year at Maccabi Tel Aviv.
"We have two coaches for the coming season - Marco and Ton," Jammer said yesterday after the contract was signed. When asked who would be giving the instructions to the players, the club owner added: "Caanen will be responsible, but it will be a matter of teamwork between the two, and they will stand on the sideline together."
Jammer said the idea to bring in Caanen was his own. "I wanted to have a European coach with me. I've kept an eye on Caanen over the past months, and I think he got the most out of Maccabi under the circumstances. This is the best choice for Netanya."
The newly appointed coach said he saw no reason why he should feel "strange" working under Berkovic, to which his former charge added: "I'm not his boss, and I'm not Marco's boss either. Daniel Jammer is the boss, and we intend to work as a team, without ego games... My function is to help Daniel build a good team," Berkovic concluded.
