Israel's Zohar Sharon wins Australian Open for blind golfers
By Steve KleinZohar Sharon won two blind golfer tournaments last week Down Under, including the 2009 Australian Open. Sharon, who was wounded during his military service for the Israel Defense Forces some 25 years ago, also won the South Australia Open. He completed the course with the help of his assistant, Shimon Levy, who uses a whistle to guide him toward the holes.
Sharon's triumph in Australia is another milestone for the heroic IDF veteran. In 2003, the 56-year-old Israeli captured the World Invitational blind golf tournament in Scotland.
While on demolition detail in the army 25 years ago, Sharon lost his vision after a chemical substance was accidentally sprayed in his face.
