Del Potro, Roddick tarry into 4th round of U.S. Open
Del Potro is coming off a bronze medal at the Olympics, defeating Novak Djokovic in the third-place match in London.
Juan Martin del Potro beat fellow Argentine Leonardo Mayer in a 20-point tiebreaker on Sunday, which included a shot by Mayer that bounced off the net post while headed wide and landed in. Potro returns to the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time since his 2009 title run.
Seventh-seeded del Potro won 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (9 ) in three hours, 20 minutes. He was unable to defend his championship in 2010 because of surgery on his right wrist. Last year, he lost in the third round.

Later in the day, American Andy Roddick staved off retirement with a three-hour duel with a 7-5, 7-6 (1 ), 4-6, 6-4 victory to join del Potro in the fourth round.
Spaniard David Ferrer also needed four sets to win his third-round match, laboring to defeat Australian Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (9 ), 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
