Malaga extended its Euroleague home winning streak by defeating Maccabi Tel Aviv 93-70 in their Group B game last night.
Maccabi coach Oded Katash, who was missing the injured Nikola Vujcic, opened with Lior Eliyahu, Marcus Fizer, David Bluthenthal, Vonteego Cummings and Yotam Halperin, while Malaga went with Carlos Cabezas, Berni Rodriguez, Carlos Jimenez, Daniel Santiago and Marcus Haislip.
Tel Aviv dropped to 2-2 and into third-place tie with Efes Pilsen, 66-63 winners over Le Mans in the other Group B game last night, while Malaga improved its record to 3-1, tied for second with Aris Thessaloniki.
Maccabi, which trailed most of the game, was as close as eight points behind at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Malaga took complete control in the final period, outscoring the visitors 28-13.
After Tel Aviv took a 9-2 lead to start the game, Malaga turned the tables and took its first lead of the night (12-11) after Haislip scored four straight points. As Katash's continued to struggle against the taller Spanish club, Malaga stretched its advantage to 21-16 at the end of the first period.
By halftime, the host had increased its lead to nine points (45-36), as nothing seemed to work, either on offense or defense.
Fizer was active in the paint, and in the third quarter his basket brought Maccabi to 48-42, but that was the closest Tel Aviv would get the rest of the way, although the third quarter ended with Malaga ahead by eight, 65-57.
However, Maccabi ran out of steam, while Malaga just kept running, putting the game away with ease.
