What would happen if Israel stopped fighting the world?

Spreading fear is a widespread, familiar practice in regimes that Israel does not want to resemble.

By Gideon Levy Tags: Israel Egypt Israel news

So where did you spend Passover? Tens of thousands of Israelis were in Sinai. They ignored the Counter-Terrorism Bureau's warning, yet returned home safe and sound. Other Israelis - wait until you hear this - visited Cairo. I repeat: Cairo! They too returned tired but happy. They too did not heed the warnings. Haaretz's foreign news editor, for example, went to Egypt with his wife and four small children for the holiday. He identified himself as an Israeli everywhere he went, and believe it or not, was made to feel welcome.

Other Israelis traveled to other forbidden places all over the globe, including Turkey, and not a hair on their heads was harmed. They'd all had enough of the frightening campaigns.

Unintentionally, this world travel has become a kind of civil protest, a quiet uprising against the terror campaigns, a sort of rebellion that should be encouraged. In a brainwashed, blind, automatically obedient society, even this is something. It's not merely the Israelis' leisure culture, but the essence of their being. We are all surrounded by a phalanx of fear agents and dread brokers, suspicion marketers and anxiety propagandists. An army of generals and analysts, politicians and security specialists, all mobilized for one purpose - to infuse our life with terror.

It's time to free ourselves of their yoke. It's not that there aren't any dangers, or that we don't need warning or security apparatuses, but they must not be the only influences. The voice of thunder from Jerusalem, willfully blown up and exaggerated, is the only voice we hear, without a trace of an alternative - a voice of normality, sanity, optimism and hope. This applies as much to our next vacation as it does to Israel's next step in the peace process.

Spreading horror is a widespread, familiar practice in regimes that Israel does not want to resemble. Fear is the resort of the despot, a way to create false unity and prevent daring moves. Fear also feeds xenophobia, putting domestic problems out of people's minds whether the foe is real or imagined. From Hamas' armament to the tunnels to accusations that foreign workers and refugees spread crime and disease, from the Iranian nuclear threat to swine flu - all are tried-and-true methods of intimidation by exaggeration.

If we leave the Golan, missiles will land on Rosh Pina; if we withdraw from Yitzhar, Katyusha rockets will fall on our heads in the Dan region. Unless we bombard Iran, we'll be blown up ourselves; if we lift the blockade on Gaza, Ashkelon will be destroyed. There may be a grain of truth in all these threats and predictions, but when a no less threatening scenario is provided, it is easy to wonder why exactly we need all this.

For a long time we haven't had a statesman in these parts who has spread hope. Benjamin Netanyahu is the latest candidate for that position, but he's not the only one who has instead become an agent of fear; that is the job of almost anyone who has access to the public at large. Auschwitz is on the doorstep all the time, and everything is terribly dangerous. We must get an Iron Dome and gas masks, immigration police and vaccinations for everyone, whether necessary or not. We must not travel, must not speak Hebrew, certainly must not withdraw from anywhere. Countless apparatuses specializing in spreading fear are at work, without a single agent of normality to balance them.

There is nobody in Israel to tell us what will happen if we stop fighting with the rest of the world. Everyone is analyzing only the dangers and risks. You'll never hear anyone analyzing the chances and opportunities. Nobody is talking about a possible utopia - of being integrated into the space around us and being accepted by the world, of traveling by car to Europe, of enjoying the prosperity and security that ending the occupation would bring. The voices we hear tell us none of that. It might infuse people with hope, and that is dangerous.

Now the first crack has opened in the intimidation wall - a 36 percent increase in the number of travelers to Sinai. It seems like a small matter, but perhaps it will lead to opening additional daring cracks. If we didn't heed the scaremongers, if we went to Sinai and it was great, maybe we should try a few more things. Perhaps we could live with an Iranian nuclear bomb, without initiating an attack. Perhaps withdrawing from the Golan isn't as dangerous as they tell us. Perhaps lifting the Gaza blockade will be good for Israel, and recognizing Hamas will be a blessing.

And above all, heaven help us, maybe peace is a good thing, something that consists of more than just the existential dangers about which we're constantly being warned.

So we ignored the warnings and went to Sinai? Let's ignore some other imaginary fears too.

Assuming Israel were to be defeated and its Jews forced to lose their racial dominance there, how would that in any way affect the majority of the world's Jews who live elsewhere? Would a Canadian Jew be any less safe?

Does this writer feel safe under the protection of his fellow Jews, sure sounds like it. What the writer doesn't realize is that only a strong Israel can protect him. That he can go and enjoy his holiday in Egypt is because of a strong Israel. The writer provides false hope. How many Egyptians have visited Israel during any of their holidays? There is no mutual respect nor desire otherwise you'd see some Egyptian visitors in Israel and you don't. As for your comments on Gaza could the writer please inform us of which of the 10,000 rockets fired at Israel did he find the most peaceful. It's really incredible that some "news" papers write the stupidest things. Tabloid news at it's fines here.

"Spreading horror" isn't just something that other states do, it's what Israel does. It isn't a "widespread, familiar practice" of other "regimes"--it's a widespread, familiar practice of your regime. And that's exactly why the rest of the world has lost patience: Israel has become the nation it claims its enemies are. The hypocrisy--including that in the comments on this thread--is just astounding. While I agree with the author's sentiment, the world needs more than small gestures. Israel's leftists go on holiday to Sinai, while Gaza continues to burn.

Has anyone noticed recently, that Hamas has lost control over some other radical goups in Gaza? That's the result of the permanent indoctrination of palestinian children by tv stations as HAMAS TV (among others). Dreams are helpful for keeping up hope, but there's no short and easy way to fulfill them.

Gideon Levy is as usual the voice of reason. Too many Israelis hark back constantly to the past, sometimes 62 years, sometimes thousands of years. The present never seems to interest some of these people. So strong is the paranoia that they suffer a collective amnesia. Israelis need to update their views on Arab intentions declared in 1948. Since that, Egypt and Jordan, sworn enemies of Israel, have initiated exchanges which resulted in peace on those borders. To ignore this and continue ranting betrays a great deal of deceit. In 2003 and 2007 the Arabs offered a peace deal which a country desiring peace would not have ignored. To reject peace based on fairness and then moan about being unloved is silly really. The rejection has to be seen as a wish to continue this imperial mission which dooms the future of this country.

You and I know that the Palestinians are free to go anytime they want to leave Israel. The problem is not Israel who's holding them back; the problem comes from the coward Arab countries that want to use and abuse them to stay to fight Israel. Now who's the bad guy? Not Israel. Some smart pals would not listen to this horrible dictature and leave for their ancestral countries such as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt for good where they can better themselves.

Posted: "If Israel stopped fighting the world, they would not be rejected around the world as they increasingly are..Already in the US, US/Israeli dual citizens are being denied bail for their crimes and are being denied security clearances..." llene, Israelis and Isreal do not give a damm about what other people think of them. Israel has been doing whatever it wants to do for the past 60 years and no one has ever lifted a finger to stop Israel or punish Israel for their crimes against the Palestinian people. Israel will continue to do so, as long as the USA government continues to support the Israeli governement by sendin billions of dollars and aid each year to Israel. This support allows the Israeli government to continue with it's criminal actions. Stop this support and you will see how quickly Israel will end the occupation, return the lands it stole from the Palestinains and beg the Palestinians to sign a peace treaty. Until that happeneds nothing will change.

Israel has gone too far with its disdain for its allies, the Arabs and the Palestinians. It has a sense of God-given superiority. Zealots will always rationalize their own righteousness regardless of the realities. Too many Israelis have bought into the Netanyahu-Lieberman-Sharon-Ultra Orthodox view of the world and supported vicious campaigns to attack any Jew or otherwise that speaks truth and justice. It is now incumbant upon the world, led by the Quartet and the UN to impose justice through economics, UN declarations of independence for Palestine and preparedness to deploy peacekeeping forces to protect the Palestinians.

Correct. Ariel Sharon in many of his many speaches declared that he wanted to completely destroy all Palestinians. The Israeli government is full of racist leaders who if given the chance would completely wipe off the whole Palestinian population.

Those Nations which did offer refuge to Palestinians in 1948 were less than charitable in their accommodation.

With so much of the world so wept with compassion for the Palestinians, and with the world unwilling to act to help the Palestinians have their own state; I must ask which nations are willing to take them in? Israel must eventually exterminate them, either slowly by dispossession and oppression, or in a final solution. There is no chance given a resolute Israel and a cowardly world that the Palestinians can avoid extinction unless the emigrate.

If Israel stopped fighting the world, they would not be rejected around the world as they increasingly are. The costs of the fighting are going to be increasingly felt as trade sanctions tighten and the ability of Israelis to travel and emigrate starts to be restricted. Already in the US, US/Israeli dual citizens are being denied bail for their crimes and are being denied security clearances to work in the US government or in sensitive positions. It will get worse. No Israeli nuclear scientist can even get a visa to study in the US anymore. Ouch.

The reason the Palestinians are living the way they live is because Israel stole everything from them andf occupy them. Israel's occupation for the past 60 years and the constant bombing of the Palestinian homes, schools, farmlands etc. is the reason why the Palestinians live like they do. They are not given the chance to evolve as you say. The only reason that Israel has evolved is because it gets billions of dollars from outside which helps it continue the occupation and evolve in other ways. I agree with you about the fact that the other Arab States haven`t lifted a finger to help their brethren. but that does not give Israel the right to steal lands and torture the Palestinians. Give them the chance to create their own state and they will evolve just like Israel did.

Walter commented that Hamas wants Israel destroyed. Messages from many Hamas leaders including the military wing hint at the movements willingness to accept a Palestinian state on the Pre-1967 borders. This is very different from wanting Israel destroyed. On the other hand Israel both wants the Palestinians destroyed and are actively doing the business of destruction.

Mr. Levy is of the opinion that "infused" fear is an obstacle to the good life (read Passover family vacations and Middle East peace) for Israelis. Just step outside Israel to see the ominous changes in life for Jews around the world. While Israeli travelers luckily did well in Turkey and Cairo this time, Jewish students in Canadian universities get attacked by machetes. An anomaly, for sure, but one that was simply incomprenensible during my lifetime until very recently. Your Israeli fear is realistic, completely legitimate and should be as a beacon of pre-emptive action as the spectre of anti-Semitism (now cleverly camouflaged by Anti-Zionism) is progressing in manners many of my Boomer generation in the galut finds horrifying and breathlessly surreal. What would happen if you stopped putting the onus on Israel for everything that goes bad in the Middle East? Is it Israel's fault that the Palestinians have rejected every generous peace offer ever made to them without counteroffer since 1947? Is it Israel's fault that Hamas and Hezbollah are dedicated to its destruction as they are armed by Iran and Syria? I do recall what happened when Jews were not trying to "fight the world" in the 1930s. But that's another story.

You seemed unwilling to understand. It is indeed nonesense to argue that Israel sovereign territory in 1948 was not attacked, therefore.....Israel reaction was....what? an agression??? It sounds like "Hitler never said that Jews would be sent to concentration camps." Israel tiny community was under permanent attack by arab thugs and since declaration of independence threatened by arab countries armies intention to invade. This is a clear 'casus bellis' which Israel responded elegantly and succesfully. Israel's war was not condemned by the UN, and territories beyond partition which were acquired by war, are accepted as integral part of Israel by the International Community. Sorry to inform you, but the ths UN does not demand Israel to go back to partition "sovereign" lines. The only debate nowadays is about post-67 borders. Part of them might be annexed as well, after negotiations.

Not to mension the torture they suffer at the hands of the Israeli army. What about the cutting of their electricity and water supplies? What about the destruction of their farm lands, stopping medical and other aid that they need? By the way, the killings that you are talking about in 47, 47, 1929 and the ethnic cleansing, are all a retaliation as a result of the actions taken by Menachem Begin and all of his terrorist groups, who were killing Palestinians forsing them out of their homes. The Palestinians did not wake up one day and decide they wanted to kiss Jews, they had a reason for fighting Jews. They are fighting for their freedoms and rights just like we did against the British.

But you will risk Israeli and Palestinian lives by supporting Israel's land thefts and occupation and the crimes the Israeli government is committing. As mighty or as smart as you think you are, or Israel is, or America is, none of you will be able to stop the Palestinians from regaining their freedom, lands or creating a state of their own, or Iran having nuclear power, or any other nation that strives to rid itself from leaders that serve America and Israel's interests. Those days of American and Israeli domination in the Middle East are soon coming to an end. For Israel's sake I hope by then it will not be too late to achieve peace, but it looks that way right now.

In 1929, the subsequent killing and ethnic cleansing of Hebron of Jews ? I think your just one of those who are not happy that Jews are no longer your Dhimmi's.

Can't you see that you are exactly like someone depicted in Levy's article? As you well know, the administration of Israel campaigns for an attack against Iran, not the other way around. Iran has not initiated war in the last 300 years. Like many others in contemporary Israeli society, you are turning reality completely on its head.

The other Arab countries want nothing to do with the Palestinians, and the ones that do, keep them holed up in refugee camps. Doesn't that speak volumes about the "slaves" ???

"Perhaps lifting the Gaza blockade will be good for Israel, and recognizing Hamas will be a blessing." Hamas wants Israel DESTROYED! Meanwhile, Iran issues threats against Israel and Hamas lobs rockets into Siderot. Yet, the Int'l community condemns Israel for (drum roll please)...building housing units!!

There is no such thing as compromise of freedom and justice in the name of security. More often than not, "security" is another name for Orwellian state terrorism, worse than the opposition to that same terrorism exercised by the Palestinians in the name of freedom. Levy, as always, is right.

    Question to Peter SM
    • Faadil
    • 08.04.10
    • 14:47

So Peter SM, you mention a blockade on Jerusalem in which nothing was allowed through. I take it that by mentioning this, you feel this was an inapropriate action ie: blockade without allowing anything through? If this was the case and civilians were harmed to the point that the laws of war were violated, me personally, I think such an action would have been inappropriate and so very wrong. I hope we agree on this point. And if we agree on this, surely you also agree that the siege of Gaza is also inappropriate and very wrong? Peter SM, I'd expect to see you joining peaceful public protests against the Gaza siege.

"... the Arab war of annihilation " Read the OFFICIAL Arab League Declaration on the Invasion of Palestine. (remember, Israel was no longer a part of Palestine May 15th 1948) No mention of annihilation, genocide or even a threat to Israel. Nil Nada Nought None. It puts the legal case for going to the defense of the non-state entity of Palestine. There' no condemnation by the UNSC because the Arab League had a right to defend the territories slated for the new Arab states from Jewish forces already outside of newly declared Israel. "What do YOU call targetting &killing mostly civillians all over Israel?" That's terrorism m'dear. It's something some folk resort to when all else has failed them. It's not attacking Sovereign territories. It's attacking the civilians of the usurper. "Dont be shy,you just keep coming up with the same "smart" question" It hasn't ever been answered.. "They were sent packing..." Actually, they prevented Israel from taking Gaza and the West Bank

One is more than free to ellude himself, but please Gideon, don't use the bully pulpit of Haaretz to impress us of your yuddling fabricated reality. As a Moroccan Jew, we might have receive certain faculties to live among our brethren the Muslims-Arabs (with the Berberes, it was more like kinship)freely but with reservations, so we got to know the possibilities as Regan said:"Trust and Verify", which unfortunately was not given t tje peoples from the Shtetl. Gideon, remember that the world didn't rush to the rescue of the Jews-Israelis during the Holocaust, so be careful, but try and integrate yourself in the mentality of the local, where you live.

If Gideon Levy was Prime Minister, there would be a just peace
    • Faadil
    • 08.04.10
    • 12:25

When Israel produces a prime minister of Gideon Levy's calibre, there will be peace between the 2 peoples. There is a recognition from the Palestinian side that the Jews are going to stay in the land of Palestine. Even Hamas understands this. When the Israelis elect a leader and a goverment who understands that the Palestinians are also going to stay on this land, there is a real chance of peace. Until that happens, the demographics will continually change in favour of the Palestinians, weakening the Israeli position further and further. Its in Israel's interest to reach a just 2 state solution in the very near future. This definitely also fits in with the Palestinian aspirations. Be careful, you have Hamas today, you may have Al Qaeda tomorrow. Hamas is easier to make peace with, no matter what the scare mongers tell you

Well, not at all surprised that this sort of Utopian screed is found here at Israel's only Communist Palestinian Hebrew-English daily, but that said, it's still so full of holes, it wouldn't hold water for more than a few seconds. Because a number of completely detached Israelis (and considering Haaretz's readership numbers, there are apparently plenty) decided to go to Cairo and Turkey, without being savagely slaughtered is this man's basis for declaring that basically all threats against the Jewish State are imagined or overblown? This oozes of such leftist contempt for reality that it could be considered dangerous, that is, if anyone in a position of merit were to actually take it seriously. But no, it's just a little light reading for the detached here in Israel and the very-much engaged over in Europe, all of whom are nodding in agreement with this article, as it serves their personal ethos on a number of varying levels. Gross.

However, you have an entire generation of politicians in Israel whose entire career has been based on peddling fear. As a career in Politics is a very lucrative money spinning scam I cannot see this happening anytime soon. The 'Vote for me I will keep you safe' slogan is very easy to fulfill if there is no real threat apart from the one a politician creates. The 'Vote for me I'll give you a job, free health care' is a bit harder to fulfill. It is like people claiming London is Londonistan when a person I can't mention is there safe. Or Israel's elite are queuing up to live there as it is safe. They peddle fear and hatred because they have no ideas on how to improve the lives of the people. So they keep Israelis scared and therefore malleable. They make up threats so as to justify military spending, They make up threats to ensure money from the United States to keep the economy afloat. It's all a money making scam

I hope you continue to use the power of the pen and more people will listen and put the right people in power in order for all of us to live in peace and Harmony. These politicians do not care about you and me, they only care about their power and keeping that stupid chair. To prove my point. Find me a country in this world that politicians did not stay in power same people all the time if not this term it is 5 or ten years later. In other words same political party with the same ideology and it never changes that is why it is so important to have people like you tell the truth in order to live in peace with our neighbors

The prevailing wisdom among Jews who remember is; there is not a thought or suggestion that the world can offer that is in the benefit of the Jewish people after we witnessed the behavior of nations during the Holocaust. It's the unfortunate truth, and should be remembered as the stability of civilization disintegrates. The opposite of the prevailing schemes and genius plans the world offers is and will always be at the expense of Jewish survival. Sorry to have to break reality to you.

I have no doubt that successive Israeli leaders have used fear to keep themselves in power, and unfortunately it has worked so well that this fear endangers any prospects of peace for this little nation. Fear and suspicion go hand in hand and then the "ghetto mentality" takes hold. Unfortunately, this mentality is growing in the diaspora, and there is a real danger of anti-semitism raising it's ugly head. Not because people are against jews, but because they are awful, intolerant human beings. Moderate Israelis and jews in the diaspora need to take back the dialogue.

I have no difficulty in understanding Moses when he asks "let my people go.' Exodus 5:1 is most clear. What I cannot understand is how Israelis today can refuse to Let the Palestinians go? Must there be the plagues? Must Israelis be subjected to the murder of every first born child before they will confront their monstrosity? Clearly decency will never suffice to lead Israel to let the Palestinians go. So we are now many thousands of years later yet we have an Israel, no different than Pharaoh, dedicated to destroying and enslaving decent people simply because they want freedom. Clearly Israel is no longer a nation with the least indulgent of decency. Israel has become a monstrosity, oblivious to reality and everything it once opposed. Why?
