Netanyahu, U.S. gave you a second chance. Use it
Obama's support is vital to preventing Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons; PM must appease the U.S.
Haaretz Editorial Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Barack Obama Iran nuclear Israel newsPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leaves tonight for a visit of considerable importance to Washington. The American government has decided to give him a second chance, following the Ramat Shlomo crisis that erupted during Vice President Joseph Biden's visit to Israel. The opportunity was made clear on Friday when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Netanyahu's answers to her most recent inquiries "useful and productive."
The U.S. had demanded that Netanyahu restrain Israeli building in East Jerusalem, make a gesture to the Palestinian Authority and agree to deliberations on all the core issues - permanent borders, Jerusalem and refugees - in indirect talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Netanyahu supplied partial answers that the Americans accepted, and this quieted the public disagreement between the two countries.
Netanyahu must make use of this second chance to create a new relationship with President Barack Obama and senior members of the U.S. government. Obama's support is vital to achieving Netanyahu's stated goals: preventing Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons and an agreement with the Palestinians for two states for two peoples. It is up to Netanyahu to repair working relations with the president and senior members of his staff; this is in Israel's interest.
Netanyahu will commit a grave error if he is tempted to continue the damaging clash with Obama, and if he uses the pro-Israel lobby, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), to enlist the president's political enemies to advance the positions of the Israeli right wing. Obama is not an enemy - the Haaretz-Dialog poll published Friday shows that 69 percent of the Israeli public believes that Obama's approach to Israel is fair and even friendly.
The prime minister must make clear to Israeli supporters in America that he is moving in step with Obama in order to achieve the two countries' common goals. Netanyahu's trip will be considered a success if it ends with renewed negotiations with the Palestinians. The Quartet of Middle East peace negotiators' recent announcement that it supports the establishment of a Palestinian state before the summer of 2011 offers a reasonable schedule for achieving an agreement.
Netanyahu must enter these negotiations with complete seriousness, overcome the political obstacles placed before him by extreme members of his coalition, and strive for an agreement that will establish an independent Palestine at Israel's side, as he promised in his speech at Bar-Ilan University. This is what his hosts in Washington expect of him.

See Acts 4 for the reference (admittedly Netanyahu--who is certainly NOT of Messianic persuasion--will not understand this, but it applies), a set of weening, corrupt rulers (0bama/Bidet-on-tap) asking others (Netanyahu government) to stop doing the right thing!
Finaly the answer is simple. Maybe Iran will produce nuclear weapons and maybe Israel will attack Iran. As both can have consequence for the whole world we have to warn them. The country who starts the first attack has to be punish the agressor. It doesn't matter if it will be Israel or Iran. After the attack their will be no discussions anymore, just punish.
and as Petraues recently intimated, it should be us ( as in Jewish nation ) or it will be his soldiers... I think it's time for the dragon to be reminded that natural abilities to bear many heads at one time are subject to careful observation of laws of co - existance.
i feel sorry for the Israeli PM. he is in an impossible spot. please don't be hard on him. he is doing the best he can. after waiting 2000 years to call it our own, jerusalem is too precious to Jewish heritage to divide, and yet, everyone in the world tells the PM he has to. i would not give half of J'lem to the palestinians for their capitol. i would tell them the whole city is israeli and the arab residents are citizens of israel. but im not the spokesman for the world, just for me. maybe a division of J'lem will achieve or contributre to a peaceful settlement of palestinian claims maybe not, but many of us will cry a long time if we ar pried away from our ancentral home.
A 2nd chance for what? Obama and Clinton were both wrong in their verbal attacks toward Israel. Just look at the actions taken when the US was attacked. Bibi knows what is best for Israel, and should not take ORDERS from anyone. I am an American Jew and AIPAC member and a loyal support of Israel and Bibi. Go Bibi.
PM Netanyahu needs to tell Pres. Obama to go piss up a rope! Israel is the rightful owner of all of Jerusalem and The United States needs to stay out of her internal affairs. And as for Iran, if they continue on their very dangerous path then they (the Iranis) must be prepared to face the consequences.
" Israelis seem to be under the false impression that they choose who will be their Prime Minister." Interesting to see your beliefs.
Unlike Hamas charter calling for the extermination of all Jews, nobody ever called for the extermination of all Arabs or Moslems.
If it were not for Iran and I was Prime Minister Netanyahu; I would not adhere to any of President Obama or Secretary Clinton?s requests for Israel to bow-down to the Palestinians. Mr. Obama is a far-left radical and Secretary of State Clinton is his sheep-dog. I have always viewed the U.S. and Israel as close allies, however, I perceive Mr. Obama as anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian. Many of his long-term associates are pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli. The writing was on the wall when President Obama?s first act was making a global ?apology-tour? for my U.S.A. Mr. Obama is the worst leader for the U.S. we could possibly have and the same goes for our U.S./Israeli relationship.
" the Haaretz-Dialog poll published Friday shows that 69 percent of the Israeli public believes that Obama's approach to Israel is fair and even friendly." I am so relieved. For a while I thought Israel had gone mad. Now I see that only 30% of Israelis may be bloodthirsty lunatics and they use talk backs a lot more than their sane countrymen.
It's spelled "moron".
Obama is a pathetic and effete leader, and the world (outside of Western Europe, Canada and Australia) recognizes this. The opportunity to deal with Iran has come and gone. A nuclear Iran is now inevitable. A nuclear Iran will not attack Israel (mutually assured destruction) and will be more of an antagonist to the Saudi Arabia and the United States than a threat to Israel. All Israel must contend with are the enemies at its gates - Palestinian terrorists - emboldened by Obama. Israel must seize on this historic opportunity and unify Jerusalem. Anti-Semite groups will cry foul, but no one will care 10 years from now.
One hopes that he washes his ears before he goes to the U.S. Most likely, he won't.
Israel can survive without the $3 billion. It has survived the past 4000 years under GOD'S Providence, while other ancient civilizations have disappeared into the dustbin of history.
In this farce of a debate, there is a panel of 4.....2 on the hamas side, and 2 on the PA side... The only discussion taking place, is how best to get rid of ALL of israel...this is not about gaza and WB, it is about israel INSIDE the green line...israel rightly knows what they are facing...the people here on haarets and elsewhere around the world who THINK this code word "occupation" is about gaza and west bank are either delusional, ill informed, ignorant or anti semitic. It IS that simple. All of you who deny this with this excuse or that excuse simply are avoiding the truth, as time and time again is laid bare from the mouths of the PA, HAMAS, the lebanese, the syrians, the iranians, the saudis etc... What a disgrace the arabs are and by defacto, Obama. Obama KNOWS that the arabs at large are not talking about WB and Gaza, nor about golan or shaaba farms...HE KNOWS and yet he won't come out and say to the arabs, until you accept Israel even INSIDE the green line, we will not engage in a false peace process, and not only that, but we will strengthen israel and strengthen her security. Nabil shaath and abdullah abdullah are on the PA side of this farce called a debate in doha..and BOTH of them are for taking down all of israel. This is the so called moderate side of the palestinians....what they want is perfectly crystal clear. It is a complete joke...if you ask me, israel is being pushed into a false peace, KNOWING that this is a trojan horse. Obama is a real disgrace.
"There is a more violence in Ireland than is obvious as can be seen from the "attempt" to attack the the Israeli Embassy in Dublin." wj Funny--I could find no reference to such an event---care to share--so I can get at the "facts" At least our violence is not based on religious fairy tales about chosen people. You just hate to face facts ---dont you. They are so inconvenient. "Actually, my home and favorite place to "wander" is the Bahamas which won its freedom from Britian peacefully in 1964 internally and externally on July 10, 1973."wj So why does Israel not do likewise---answer---"Greater Israel". Now back to Iisrael/Hamas--the original discussion---which you tried to divert---hmmm--I wonder why.
When will Hamas put their "mandate" to a "free and fair" election supervised by the UN or the EU? Without that, how do they have the right to sit at any peace negotiations with Abbas or Netanyahu?
BROD: "This article is simplistic. First, Israel is a sovereign nation. Second, the U.S. does not own Israel. Third, Israel is a friend and all of the U.S. Fourth, the U.S. cannot buldoze its friend and ally like a piece of trash in favor of its enemy-Islamist-Jihadism. Fifth, Israel`s top priority is to protect is sovereignty and national security interests." You are simplistic! 1) Then stick to the land within your sovereign borders. 2) You bet your ass we do. Try getting by without the $3 billion a year that we give you. Don't forget what happened to Shamir and his gov. when Bush Sr. and Baker stood up to him and took away $10 billion in loan guarantees!! 3)Saying you're a friend does not make you one. START ACTING LIKE ONE! 4)No, only the IDF can bulldoze. They bulldoze Palestinians right out of their homes and murder(Rachel Korrie)anyone who tries to stop them!! 5) Israel's top priority is continuing to build illegal settlements and grab as much land as they can!!
Knowing Netanyahu and Likud, that is what will happen on Tuesday. Netanyahu will do what will strengthen his right wing coalition domestically. AIPAC can clean up after him.
Netanyahu will delay.
If Netanyahu is speaking from the same page as the American Government and physically enacts what he tells the American Government he will remain as Prime Minister of Israel. The moment he starts prevaricating he will go the same wasy as Yitzhak Shamir. Israelis seem to be under the false impression that they choose who will be their Prime Minister.
This is called political guerrila or Netanyahu is not a jew anymore. Did you forget the phrase next year in J'em?
The editorial pushes Bibi to take the second chance (will be endless more)not because the paper thinks that is just that Palestinian to have their state but because so US will make an other war for Israel to stop "the Iran threat"
There is a more violence in Ireland than is obvious as can be seen from the "attempt" to attack the the Israeli Embassy in Dublin. Actually, my home and favorite place to "wander" is the Bahamas which won its freedom from Britian peacefully in 1964 internally and externally on July 10, 1973. Ps- Only Hamas and their masters want to destroy as a way of life.
International sanctions, embargoes, and ostracism from the community of civilized nations must be the consequence of crossing this "second chance" line in the sand.
Agreed, but they have to write "something?"
"As long as Hamas and their backers exists, there will be groups who will try to destroy peace."wj While you are wandering around Ireland---might I suggest you study the Northern Ireland peace process. Perhaps you will notice that there were those,(still are a few) on both sides willing to destroy peace. It seems as if you overlooked that in your assertion that only the Palestinians wish to destroy peace. What about the 500,000 rabid illegal settlers and their backers.
When you find an "honest" broker in this mess, please let me know.
This article is simplistic. First, Israel is a sovereign nation. Second, the U.S. does not own Israel. Third, Israel is a friend and all of the U.S. Fourth, the U.S. cannot buldoze its friend and ally like a piece of trash in favor of its enemy-Islamist-Jihadism. Fifth, Israel's top priority is to protect is sovereignty and national security interests.
Quote: "Any peace agreement which is not accepted "whole heartedly" by both sides will fail." Not so at all!... neither side will get ALL it wants whole-heartedly... but an acceptable and workable compromise coaxed thru' by an honest broker, could definitely save-the-day...
No one wants US/Israel relations to be on the rocks. But the US must emerge from foggy liberal anti-realism to realism. Check out Obama's greeting message sent to the people of Iran last week. "You've told us what you don't want. Now tell us what you want." They are dying in the streets, and Obama is playing effete word games. Useless.
It is disgusting how so many Americans here are airing out their dirty laundry. Remember what Churchill said about not criticizing your government when abroad (or in this case when posting on a foreign web site). You can make up for it when you get home (or in this case when you are posting on an American website). I did not vote for the man but he is our President right now and in the end Americans need to respect that and understand that its their country right or wrong. Elections do have consequences and it is the President who sets foreign policy.
Any peace agreement which is not accepted "whole heartedly" by both sides will fail. It is not a "process" to be developed. As long as Hamas and their backers exists, there will be groups who will try to destroy peace. All Netanyahu, or any Israeli Government not dedicated to peace, has to do to be justified in fighting again is to wait. The Clinton/Blair school of diplomacy is "wishful" thinking at best. Who knows where Blair's loyalties and "pocket book" are?
... prevailed, the political face of Israel would have looked entirely different today... ... such are the vagaries of chance...
How can you seriously refer to Obama's "inaction," when he'a the one advocating to Congress/UN sec. council a level of sanctions way heavier than any prior ones, that will effect IRGC's bank accounts in an extremely negative way, & that will eliminate many military/nuclear tech supplier sources for Iran. And don't act like u know what Obama will do in the future - after all, it was he who selected a VP who has a flawless record of championing pro-Israel legislation during his 40 years in the Senate, as well as a chief of staff who comes from Iraeli parents & served in the IDF
... fear of a relapse... Bibi could capitulate to the messianic rabid right when he returns home and meets them face-to-face... he is a malleable man, in one direction or the other... "shows-of-strength" are only a reflection of those who happen to be leaning on him at the time...
Israel should not take it upon herself to either attack or lobby to attack Iran. A nuclear Iranian is a real threat to the Arabs. It is also a very serious threat to U.S. forces in the region.
some people believed same of Siberian oil in not so distant 1945... and actually still are... and they spoke pretty good English as opposed to German.
and j'lem will be divided or an international city....you jews will never have complete control...its called sharing...get used to it
The US Army and Air Force and Navy and Marines aren't big enough for another war. Join up or get your kids enlisted. We only need a half-million more to take on Iran. And sell your house and give the money to the Treasury. China won't loan money on another war. Of course, obama won't launch a war. He's not NUTS.
It would be nice to once read an article in any of the Israeli papers that don't talk about bombing, assassinating, confiscating or occupying. Maybe I'm old fashioned, the idea of waging peace in order to get a green light on waging another war seems crazy to insane but yet this logic is prevalent in Israel. It's quite possible the bubble in Israel is the culprit in that it makes such obvious insane notions appear normal. If Israel makes peace with the Palestinians, a viable state is established, why would Iran - a country not bordering Israel - should be bombed anyway? Here we read Netanyahoo should play nice with the Palestinians to get America's help in bombing Iran? One is left with the thought Zionists think of bombing someone in their sleep. I also get the impression Israel's worst nightmare is if peace was to breakout.
If any Jew or friend of Israel, irrespective of their political affiliation thinks this President is either a friend or even an honest broker between Israel and the Arab world; I have a bridge in Manhattan I’d like to sell them. Obama, in his short tenure as chief executive has done more to weaken his close “ally” Israel than any other American President since the Jewish State’s inception. As the bellicose Mullahs of Iran are on the verge of going nuclear and possessing a sophisticated delivery system capable of hitting Israel in less than ten minutes; in a classic case of “Rome burned while Nero fiddled,” Obama’s priorities rest with the Palestinian question and weakening the Jewish State through the defunct land for peace non-process from which Israel has never seen an ounce of reciprocity. This audaciously arrogant man has incessantly delved into the internal affairs of Israel while giving the terrorists in both Fatah and Hamas essentially a free pass.
Iran will have its Nukes regardless. Israel has nothing to do or say about it and cannot effect anything. To suggest Israel capitulate to anyone for the sake of Irans' nukes is a sick joke. If US or anyone does anything about Iran's nukes it will be for the Arabs, not Israel. Israel is being manipulated as his her media, to believe it has any input regarding Iran. All this is intended to defeat Israel's resolve and ability to defeat it enemies next door, and defeat Israels military stockpile. Israel's leadership is insane.
Unfortunately President Obama is only going through the motions on Iran. At best he is working for a slowed down, controlled Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons technology. He is not sympathetic to Israel, has no commitment to her on any emotional or intellectual basis and has riddled his administration with new-lefty anti-Zionists and anti-neoconservative "pragmatists" and deeply wishes to extract Israeli concessions to get closer to Arab and Islamic centers of power, regardless as to their abiding hatred of Israel (or Jews). It is not politic to directly and rashly confront an American President but good luck with those second chances.
the man is a liar and a cheat and is good for nothing but doing nothing...which is why he was elected...to do nothing
April 1st is a week away. Iran will not be stopped in aquiring nuclear weapons, regardless of Netanyahu's relationship with Obama. This kind of early April fooling only serves to impress the impressionable.
-- which is why he picked this fight with Netanyahu: to justify his inaction
Editorial writers don't understand Obama's foreign policy philosophy. Or are they hoping for Obama's OK for Israeli bombing of Iran? I don't believe that. So second chance for what?
"Netnayahu?" Have some respect for this guy who is going to have to do the comprising you have for so long advocated. You guys (are there any women or minorities on your editorial board?)are right: The Israeli body politic will dump Bibi if he loses the USA. How about an op-ed telling Tzipi Livni to give up on the Prime Ministerial Rotation so that Bibi will have an alternative government to complete this deal. Israel can accept a deal under the American umbrella which does not obviously endanger Israel's security. Allowing the USA to shift its support away from Israel to Palestine which given American domestic politics is a real possibility, would be the height of stupidity.
Obama and his pitbulls pretend that Israel is the problem for peace. The same day Biden visited Israel palestinians held ceremony of naming a sqauer in Ramallah after terrorist Mughrabi who in 1978 hijacked a bus and killed 37 Israelis. For Obama this seems to be normal, but building in Israeli capital is a problem. Well, US presidenst come nd go, Obama in 3 years will hopefully go home, but undivided Jerusalem will always remain Israeli eternal capital.
the trouble is not in posessing one ( at least not to Israel ) it is in how one uses it. It is very unfortunate that belligerent and combative stance of my country found a loudspeaker in Jewish press. Believe me, it has nothing to do with our nation heart. Iran nuke and nuclear program has no harm to Israel. If only an opportunity. It is only harmful to those who defy the progress and the humanity need to more reliable, more resourceful, and arguably healthier to use energy supplies. It is extremely harmful only to those who dwell on oil provision, distribution, and consumption. They are prepared to go down in fight, a nuclear at that, including demands to compensations for the future, in which oil supplies are exhausted.
Assad said he increased the long range rockets to sharon after sharon was elected. Assad doesn't respect democracy. When Iran and Syrian's president had a missile conference with hamas and islamic jihad and mocked clinton for her lost translation and called u.s colonial powers there was no demand. Obama has given syria sensitive communication parts, airplane parts and offer of IMF enty. No demands on Syria.
