Israel must defuse escalating tensions along northern border

If Netanyahu keeps refusing to leave the Golan, it will be no surprise if Syria's war warnings come true.

Haaretz Editorial Tags: Hezbollah Benjamin Netanyahu Israel news

Tensions are once again rising along the northern border, and talk of war is again being heard. Israel has warned Syria against transferring "upgraded" weaponry to Hezbollah and threatened to topple the Syrian regime if war breaks out. Syria has threatened to attack Israeli cities, and Iran has charged that Israel is planning to attack Syria and Lebanon.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met in Damascus recently with the leaders of Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas and prophesied a "Middle East without Zionists."

The American administration has been trying to calm the situation. It has sent repeated messages to Israel warning of the possibility of problems caused by a "miscalculation." The Americans also summoned the Syrian ambassador and demanded that Syria stop sending arms to Hezbollah.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak met with senior American officials in Washington about the growing danger in the north, and shortly thereafter, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi headed for Washington as well. Next week, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will visit Israel, and he, too, is expected to urge Israel to show restraint and refrain from military action.

Israel rightly fears being surrounded by long-range rockets with sophisticated warheads that can hit major cities in the center of the country as well as air force bases. Such rockets are currently deployed in Syria, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. But before it embarks on a military operation in the north, or even escalates the conflict, it must first exhaust any diplomatic alternatives.

Instead of threatening war, Israel must strive to resume diplomatic negotiations with Syria, with the aim of signing a peace agreement with it. Nothing would do as much as a diplomatic agreement to effect a strategic change in Israel's north and dismantle the hostile coalition led by Iran.

An Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights, in exchange for appropriate security arrangements and normalization with Syria, would create a new reality in the Middle East, extend Israel's peaceful borders, increase stability in Lebanon and give Syria an alternative to its alliance with Ahmadinejad.

Barak is right to support renewed negotiations with Syria, but he must not make do with adopting the stance of a pundit or analyst. Instead, he must push to restart the negotiations. And if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu persists in refusing to talk with Syria because he objects to "preconditions," or if he clings to his view that Israel must not leave the Golan Heights - then don't be surprised if the warnings of war from Damascus come true.

An overall peace agreement with the Arab countries of Syria, Iran and lebanon is not worth the paper it will be written on. Who trusts those countruies to abide by rules or written documents. Other Arab countries threaten that missles will hit Israeli cities. I can only imagine what their cities would look like if they launch and hit Israel with those missles.

Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey have joined together in a strategic alliance, yet one other member has yet to be drawn to the region. This member of this growing coalition is Russia, they will soon be drawn to the region to provide a nuclear deterrent to any proposed Israeli or U.S. strike against Lebanese, Syrian, or Iranian territory. The time will come however that they will no longer view a defensive posture as productive and will join together and commit themselves in a offensive campaign against Israeli territory. These order of events were prophesied long ago by the Prophet Ezekiel.

isn't cold peace better than no peace? is the lives of 2 people not worthy of such peace? who knows may what the future brings if u don't take the first step! u r not seers of the future unless u r prepasring urselves for more war. ur kind of thinking is what is keeping u from peace with isrl. and isrl is working to regain its rightful land. and yes they will keep their weapons on hand, because isrl is a threat to them. so quit assuming ur have exclusive rights to self defense. remember u came to their land not the other way around.

What evidence does haaretz have that returning the Golan will turn Syria, Iran and Lebanon into good neighbours? The Golan should only be returned as part of an overall middle east peace plan which includes the dismantling of Hezbollah and Hamas

Brilliant and most simple concept all should strive for; Seek peace instead of war. Haaretz has shown once again the true meaning of journalism: pure objectivity. This article embodies the desire by all moderates with practical thinking to achieve true peace with enormous benefits to all. A peace treaty with Syria will automatically difuse hizbollah- forever and cuts Iranian influence by half. Peace with palestinians will send the middleast on a race to economic wonderland. It is time for us to see the big picture. Does Israel want to keep bits of land with eternal and escalating mortal risks, or does it want heaven on earth.

Assad is toying with the Obama Admin and Israel by sending mixed signals. Once, he asks Turkey to intermediate with Israel and later he receives Najad, Nassrallah and other Palestinian terror, to announce the close demise of Zionism, and publicly mocks Mrs. Clinton. He's simply wasting precious time in hope that a Nuclear breakthough on the Iranian side will leverage the Iranian axis on the negotiation table.

road map! what map? Only delay tactics and unnecessary provocation. Now Hebron at this sensitive time. Does the PM want another war so can destory Lebanon again and Syria ? Now the Gulf another enemy after botched Mossad operation. Israel is going nowhere and soon Palestine will take unilateral decisions Palestine is winning the PR battle.

Ah, so give Syria Golan first, to diffuse tensions. With this strategic advantage, of course they will make peace with Israel, as will Hezbollah and Iran.

stupid left wing liberal article - typical Haaretz BS! The border has been quiet for 30 years. Syria lost the Golan in a war of agression. They are NEVER getting it back. The USA does not give back Texas and California to Mexico. Syria will have to make peace in the end without the Golan because Iran will not last forever. eventually Iran will be democratic in 5, 10 ,20 years. Then what will syria do? It's BS to think if you give the Golan away you will magically have peace with Syria. In another 60 years all this nonsense of giving away the Golan will be forgotten. Maybe Haaretz will be gone, but not the Golan. Am Yisroel Chai!

Give up the Golan and you will find S-300/HQ-9 Iranian clones deployed. It stretches the fixed wing and rotary air assets and thus the capability of the ground forces. Assad does not want peace with Israel, if it was as easy as giving up the Golan Heights it would have occurred by now. It will kill tourism if these clowns can use the threat of hitting commercial airlines out Ben Gurion, not to mention the military aspects of having hostile nations able to control your air space.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people have short memories. Aside from the fact that Israel won the Golan Heights in a defensive war for her VERY existence (with Arab leaders yelling, "we will kick the Jews into the sea"), but do we really want to go back to pre-67 when the northern residents were subjected to daily shelling from the Golan Heights. Our neighbors do not respect appeasement. For peace, Syria needs to come to us.

Syria can talk the talk, but without the Golan, they don't have the necessary tactical advantage over Israel to embark in a war against her. But give the Golan to Syria, and you can be sure their artillery will find a new and more dangerous home.

Israel must defuse excalating tensions? Defuse tensions and simultaneously grabbing more land, building more settlements, issuing more threats to its neighbours and so on? As a matter of fact: Israel has been and still is the fuse in the region. So it would be better to defuse the region?

it's going to be bad... but there are no "arrangements" that can in any shape of form replace commanding hight in the area. The author of this article calls for Israel to sacrifice million of civilian lives for one gesture advocated by left political wing. As such this represents an adventurous stance that will not save Israel from war but will exact enormous price in Jewish lives. This author is a traitor of the nation and must be held accountable for the position exposing million lives of Israelis to existential threat. The commanding height permits the enemy to exact immediate and simultaneous launch of salvo that has the potential to defeat Israel deterrent. Perhaps not in its entirety, however sufficient to make defense of living Israeli civilians untenable for long enough to demand dismantling of Israel under military threat of extermination. Territorial arrangement may not come before peace and respectful coexistence of two nations in the area came to be.

Which sort of peace we are talking about? A peace like in between european countries or just sort of extended ceasefire. Is there a real peace with Egypt or Jordan? Can Israelis travel freely in this countries without risking their lifes? So whom needs another cold peace like that? There will be no peace now and there will be no peace in future exept all jews leave "Palestine" As long as a single jew owns a piece of land, even only of the size of a football field, there will be no peace never, ever. How naive one must be, also leftist israelis, to close his eyes upon the reality
