Gaza is the fuel for Muslim world's anti-Israel struggle

The events of the past few days have created two illusions that are dangerous for Israel.

By Haggai Alon Tags: Israel news Gaza Middle East peace

The events of the past few days have created two illusions. One is that Israel and the United States are equal; the other is that the problem is Jerusalem. These illusions are dangerous for Israel, in that they create a dangerous diplomatic perception and self-image.

The United States is a superpower; it is doubtful whether Israel is even a regional power. And the problem is not Jerusalem, or even the holy places, but Gaza. Finally, it is in Israel's best interest that the Quartet's decision to promote the establishment of a Palestinian state within two years not be implemented unilaterally.

Gaza is Israel's big problem. Because of the political, security and civic failure of the disengagement, the road to a solution of the problem of Gaza runs through Ramallah and Jerusalem. In Ramallah, it is in the hands of one man - Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. But Benjamin Netanyahu's government refuses to accept that fact. So Abbas is preparing a surprise for it in the form of a "no-partner" declaration.

American bayonets will not bring Abbas back to Gaza, and the Israel Defense Forces certainly will not. He will resume ruling in Gaza - just as he proved, to the chagrin of many in the defense establishment, that he could in the West Bank - on the shoulders of the Arab world, and perhaps also of a joint NATO-Arab force. Such a force would first establish itself in the West Bank, after the IDF evacuates that territory, and at the border crossings with Jordan in the Jordan Valley.

In this way, without negotiation and without the need to explain why there are no negotiations, Abbas could dispel the charges that he is a "pet Palestinian" and get around his domestic problem with his prime minister, Salam Fayyad.

Gaza is the fuel for the anti-Israel struggle. It is the symbol of that struggle throughout the Arab and Muslim world, even among those who live in Western countries. And it is up to us to uproot the anti-Israel cells the flourish there. Gaza's hunger is the fuel of the struggle. We must dry up this fuel. It is not a tool for getting Gilad Shalit back, or for toppling Hamas.

Perhaps we acted like a responsible power in Haiti, and we deserve praise for that. But in the Middle East, it would be best for us to simply behave as a responsible country. For its own security, and to protect its own interests, Israel must seek negotiations that will deal with the issues of borders and security as a single unit, with the involvement of a multilateral Arab military force and with major involvement by NATO.

Not so long ago, such a formula would have drawn disparagement from the security establishment and even accusations of "internationalizing" the conflict - that is, forfeiting Israel's security. When senior reserve officers raised the idea of such a force as part of a solution to the problem of Gaza's northern border, both during the serious clashes that preceded the disengagement and thereafter, they received chilly telephone calls from "the establishment." Meanwhile, the American force in Sinai was ignored, as was the high quality of the UN force on the Syrian border, and the fact that while the IDF is not satisfied with UNIFIL's performance in Lebanon in the wake of UN Resolution 1701, no one has come up with a better solution.

The defense establishment is beginning to understand that it is better to redeploy. We need the world, including the Arab world. Several think tanks are thoroughly studying the insertion of a force of this type.

The road to the Arab world will require Israel to treat itself like a country that is not a world power and not one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, but rather a regional or a local power. It was that road that led to Israel's previous victories. We must not give it up. We are getting closer to a situation in which if we do not act, Abbas will invoke his no-partner thesis.

Before gaza it was pre 67 borders, 47 borders, lebanon, Tel Aviv, Golan Negev They still will not recognize or accept a Jewish existence. Remember Tom Freidman said pull out of Lebanon take the high road and all will be good, get out of gaza and all will be good. Where does it end?? Pull out of Israel

Resorting to lies to hide the truth is a sign of desperation. Israel was created by the UN in 1948, not Great Britain. The palestinian Mandate was created by the League of Nations after the fall of the Ottoman Empire after WWII. And laughably you blame 9/11 on the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. Both events occured after 9/11.

The biggest mistake by Sharon has been the relinquishing Gaza. And what Israel is now witnessing its aftermath Hamas having taken over, turned the whole ready made structure into a qassam lobing place whereby its people in the main are not only suffering, but are afraid to raise their voice even if they disapprove of the regime they have to live under. Let the moderates decide among them say, enough is enough.

The UN staff *d succeed in keeping Gaza under control and administering it, providing that this staff is made exclusively of the indigenious Scandinavians and Germans. They are uncorrupted people, have no double morality and take their job and duties with utmost seriousness. They also have excellent organizational skills. They also are neutral and would not look through fingers like the Italians and the French in Lebanon, when terrorists arm themselves before their noses and launch rockets at Israel. The Scandinivians and the Germans follow rules religiously, bc they take pride in all their work and therefore are commited and do their best. Israel could trust them 100%:ly; Israel*s ability to TRUST that the UN staff is fully functional and committed to legality and to literally protect both Israel and the Gazans from any violations, is a necessary condition for the UN staff*s presence in Gaza.

The trump card is PR: rattle the cage and make known, all over the world, the human rights violations by Hamas in Gaza. Until now Israel has diplomatically kept quiet about them, bc this is Abbas-adm.*s responsibilty to do. But as we see, it doesn*t care the least about the Gazans. Therefore it is our moral obligation to reveal Hamas for what it is and make its cruelty known all over the world, as we are commanded by our religion: "do not stand idle and quiet at our fellowmen*s blood". I question the Western "humanists*" humanitarianism: they play "humanists" only when it comes to criticize Israel, but close their eyes from the gross barbaric HR violations by Hamas like public stonings of women, torture, executions without trials etc.. These "humanists" are HYPOCRITS! Israel, once the horrors of Hamas terror-rule over the Gazans is revealed, the entire world *ll feel appalled and pressure *ll be put on the leaders of the world to free Gaza from Hamas tyranny.

    • 19:46

to attack the West on 9/11 Israel's actions created hezbollah Israel's actions created Hamas. Jordan and Egypt are paid not to attack Israel. The simple truth is the images from Gaza during Cast Lead are used by the happy jihadis to get young moslem men and increasingly women to do unspeakable things in the name of Islam. Israel's actions according to General Patreaus are causing American blood to be spilt throughout the middle east, the fact of the matter is Israel is at a crossroads. Unfortubnately Israel's politicians do not have the calibre or backbone to ensure the longterm survival of Israel. And I do not mean the existence of Israel as a state. But that Israel will be seen by Jews as their natural home. Already a disconnect is occuring between American Jews and Israel. This split will only get wider. I mean the existence of Israel as a Jewish State.

    • 19:32

Why were only 8000 Settlers living in Gush Katif until the Disengagement in Aug. 2005. on 15% of the Land in Gaza ? Because this sort of Land does not support any more Residents per sq/mile. Let's calculate together; 15% of 100%, 6.3 x 8000 = 50,400 who could live like Kings (according to comments of the Israeli left about the settlers lifestyle). Now multiply the number of Citizens by 30 and you reach the current population of Gaza. Now don't forget to divide the quality of live also by 30. Here you go. This piece of Land will NEVER support +1.5 million Residents. This Place is and will always be a time bomb.

That is what the original English and French versions say. Olmert and Livni and Peretz were all perfectly peachy with the concept. All the other stuff is part of the GOI, non-official spin version that nobody at the UNSC saw or voted on. You and Dan need to take up any concerns with the authors and spinners.

Mark, You are getting lost in the document. How about looking at the results, the actions on the ground? Unifil forces are sitting around providing cover as Syria and Iran arm Hezbollah to the teeth. Here is a small passage from an Israeli source: the Lebanese army and UNIFIL have not enforced its essential provisions . Basically, south Lebanon has not become a demilitarized zone free of terrorist organizations and their weapons, Hezbollah as an organization was not disarmed, the process of rehabilitating its military strength continues, and an effective embargo on smuggling arms from Syria to Lebanon has not been imposed. This is so glaringly obvious. There are severe limits to an international force, especially one that protects Jewish lives. Jews must do this for themselves. It is their challenge, their lesson from their history.

That he holds on in hopes Hamas will change,is like asking for Al-Qaida to build a state on the doorstep of Israel. Have any of you ever thought about the scenario? in my opinion, is to render it under the UN supervision and administration for an indefinate period of time till it shows maturity to handle autonomy on its own. Hamas is terrorizing both Israel and the Gazans by making their lives a sheer hell. This has got to stop, bc Hamas rule is nothing but committing serious Human Rights violations. In order to supervise that the HRs are being honored in Gaza, the UN has to move into the strip as the Guardian of the HRs, and replace the Hamas tyranny there. Since Abbas-adm. has abandonned the Gazans and washed its hands from them and severed its ties and taken a passive role towards Gaza, Gaza *d better be cut off from the future PA-state and treated separately as an entity of its own. This procedure *ll make the foundation of the PA state possible in not so far future and keep Gaza under control, which *ll keep Israel safe.

Allow them to rebuild and farm their land. Allow them to rebuild. I think that you will find a peoples who want peace. Not with the boot of a thug on their necks but as a peoples who want to develop their own land. The only way Israel will be safe is not through subjugation of their neighbors but through mutual respect.

Absolutely right... Gaza is the problem. Because even if a miracle happens... where Abbas and Netanyahu sit down to negotiate. The self-assertive factions in Gaza will not adhere to any compromise that is reached. It's not only the bad-blood between Fatah and Hamas or the political differences. To a major extent, the complication is that militant fringe elements act on their own behalf. Besides there's no way in hell... Hamas and Islamic Jihad would allow any Arab League or UN entity to control Gaza borders or it's territory. Gaza is the wild card... and the unapproachable obstacle between Palestinians and the Israelis in the first place.

    gaza and blockade

its wrong to believe, that gaza can be without the sea/air blockade. gaza is a pool of terrorists. and in addition its abused by other nations/elements with criminal intention as their playground. thats why it CANT be without "occupation". whether it is egypt, or UN forces - there would be a blockade. you have to look at gaza and see what it is, not what you wish it was. but i agree: it mustnt be israel who controls the blockade, because this fact supports the propaganda, that it is something "mean" or "unjust". its not. blockade is necessary. because gaza is what it is.

You want someone else to do your dirty work so that you save money. Under international law, Israel still occupies Gaza by dint of controlling all their borders. Therefore, Israel is responsible for ensuring food, water, medicines are provided. Once again, Israel is reneging on it's obligations. And now, you expect that you can have the occupation but not pay for it. How Scottish of you. . . Is money everything to you?

the idea of putting a joint nato-arab force into the west bank and gaza is quite insane. if the palestinians want a state, they must be able to ensure that their teritory is not used for terror attacks against israel. if they cannot control the terrorists, or if they do not want to control the terrorists, they do not deserve a state.

False claims, denials of Israel's legacy as biblical, historic homeland of Jewish people, and Israel's prospertiy is what fuels anti-Israel sentiment. Israel's prosperity among its residents anathema to oppressive islamist leaders in fear that demands for equal distribution of assets will create unrest that they fear most. Gaza, merely a smokescreen.

....around the world. Though many disagree with Israels dealing of the situation in Gaza, most of them understand, that you can't always make "nice-nice" with people, that show a certain amount of hostility towards you (Hamas, Islamic Jihad etc...). What people don't understand, is if you aren't willing to negotiate and accept compromise with someone, who has reached out his/her hands towards you (WB Palestinians). Therefore, not Gaza, but rather Jerusalem is at the heart of anti-Israel/Zionism sentiment around the world.....

how confused can you be? you left gaza and took a larger piece in the west bank. whats so confusing? now u want more arab land. and u don't want to negotiate, is that confusing? the arabs have the right to fight, for their land and rights. isrl and you do not have exclusive rights to self defense. why not openly crush the terrorists? then you would have to include the isrlies in that crushing part, because in case you forgot isrl was created through terrorism, and you elected those who killed and destroyed entire arab villages into govt. how confused are you now?

    • 09:21

its always been egyptian, and they didnt want it back. because gaza - due to its location far away from egyptian administration - has always been a criminal cesspit ? gaza cant be part of a palestinian state. neither it might be possible to just dissolve it, mine the place and make it a no-go-area. also, its impossible for a police force to get control over terrorists and snipers, far better armed than them. someone HAS to send an army there. but this cant be israel. then every bullet fired by terrorists, would be blamed on israels presence. and why pls should israeli soldiers risk their lifes to bring this egyptian cesspit in order ? it has always been a thug-place. with or without israel. about time, egypt takes responsibility. if fail to manage it, financial aid will be cut dramatically. with this, im sure, they will have the place under control soon. maybe UN troops/"arab" army wouldnt help much, because the gazan terrorists would pay bribes. hold EGYPT responsible for it.

"what happens when there is a terrorist attack from the UN controlled area in gaza?" - your question There might someday be such a thing. But it doesn't exist now and is not currently contemplated. Reread the article, or at least the English version. Like Jason, you seem confused by the proposal of control with outside assistance. In Lebanon, UNIFIL provides assistance to the government, not to Israel.

You are both confused as to the whys and wherefores of the Israeli exit from Gaza. 1. It was not a goodwill gesture to anybody. 2. It was an economic move to save Israeli money. Occupations are expensive and maintaining tens of thousands of troops to protect a few thousand settlers made no economic sense. So Israel cut its losses and converted from active occupation to siege. It did not, however give up it's occupying authority. 3. Not a single day has gone by since the end of the Disengagement when the territory was not under siege or invasion. There was NEVER any good will.

Alon seems to have a pretty good realistic grasp of the problem that the current situation in Gaza creates. One thing missing is the role that Abbas and Haniya reconciling might play. And the international force may be significant. Many posting responses seem unaware of the realities either with the Lebanese situation or on the ground in Gaza.

You say you left Gaza. But you have kept your guards around the edges slowly but surely starving the inhabitants. What you do is totally immoral and needs to change. It was Israel who broke the truce that was working and then went on to slaughter 1,400 Gazans. If you had only allowed a decent development to take place in Gaza, you would have had peace now. An allowance for them to develop their gas field instead of plotting how to steal it. With prosperity, the Palestinians would not have started another war and wouldn't have needed to as they would have had peace. Leave Gaza alone and get out of teh West Bank and you will have peace.

Under international law, Israel is still considered an occupying power. Israel controls the air space, most of the land borders and access to the sea. If Israel wants to truly rid itself of Gaza, lift the siege and encourage Arab trade to Gaza. The UN needs to stop footing the bill for the blockading of Gaza by building a seaport in Gaza instead, of paying Israeli companies to do it.

First you told us that Israel's presence in Gaza was fueling anti-Israel sentiment. Now you're telling us that Israel's withdrawal from Gaza is fueling anti-Israel sentiment. Let's cut to the chase, shall we? Israel's existence is fueling anti-Israel sentiment. Why are we bending over trying to appease terrorists and weakening moderates? Why not openly crush the terrorists and reward the moderates? There are no moderates in Gaza, by any stretch of the imagination. Abbas, who published a PhD in Holocaust Denial, is no moderate either. There are plenty of Palestinian moderates, but we are only negotiating with the extremists because they happen to hold the power. Forget power. Negotiate with the moderates and they will grow stronger over time.
