Would Israel arrest a Jewish terrorist with only Arab victims?
Statistics show Israeli law enforcement is lax when it concerns violence against Palestinians.
By Avi Issacharoff Tags: Israel news Jewish terroristIt's reasonable to assume that if Yaakov (Jack) Teitel had focused only on attacking Palestinians, he would have encountered few problems with law-enforcement authorities. His big mistake, it seems, was targeting non-Arabs as well.
Experience - and statistics - show that Israeli law enforcement is remarkably lax when it comes to tackling violence against Palestinians. Twelve years ago, Teitel confessed to killing two Arabs and then took a break from such activity. Sure, he was detained for questioning after the murder of shepherd Issa Mahamra, but he was released due to insufficient evidence. As with many other cases of murder and violence committed against Palestinians, the story of the shepherd from Yatta and the taxi driver from East Jerusalem disappeared into oblivion - until Teitel returned and attempted to harm Jews, bringing the wrath of public opinion, the Shin Bet security service and the Israel Police down on his head.
The (justifiably) prevailing feeling among Palestinians in the West Bank is that their blood is of no consequence. It's hard to find a Palestinian today who will make an effort to approach the Israeli police about a settler assault, unless Israeli human-rights groups help him. The way Palestinians in the territories see it, Israeli law is enforced only if Jews are harmed, while incidents in which Palestinians are murdered, beaten or otherwise wounded are treated cursorily at best - and more often, are ignored entirely.
For instance, at least six shooting attacks against Palestinians in 2001-2002 have remained unsolved. The most shocking incident took place in July 2001, when three members of the Tamaizi family were shot to death by a man in a skullcap, according to relatives. The gunman asked the driver of the vehicle to stop, as it drove from one end of the village of Idna to the other, after a family wedding. When it stopped, he opened fire. But it's doubtful that Israelis remember that 3-month-old Dai Marwan Tamaizi, born after his parents underwent 14 years of fertility treatments, was killed that day - as were Mohammed Salameh Tamaizi, 27, an only child, and Mohammed Hilmi al-Tamaizi, 24, who was engaged to be married.
One relative recalled last night that to this day, the Israeli authorities have not bothered to update the family on the outcome of their investigation.
Investigations by Palestinian-rights advocacy group Yesh Din has found that 90 percent of police investigations of cases in which Israelis are suspected of committing offenses against Palestinians in the West Bank are left unsolved and are closed. In a 2006 case, four settlers were suspected of beating an elderly Palestinian man with a rifle, leaving him unconscious for three weeks - but police didn't check the alibis of two of the suspects, and a third wasn't even questioned.
There are many more such incidents that indicate that the impression of Palestinians in the West Bank is rooted in reality. Maybe it's Arab terrorists simply interest the law-enforcement authorities more than Jewish terrorists.

There is no such thing as a jewish settler building legally in occupied Palestine. You justify yourself by claiming you don't attack "Arabs" when by your very existence on the land of Palestine you are a criminal.
Today I attended a lecture at UCLA with Amira Hass. I thought I knew the depths to which IDF is willing to sink, but the level of depravity witnessed by Amira (and reported by Judge Goldstone) is beyond even what I saw in Ramallah in 2002. Not all Israeli soldiers are animals, but clearly many of the ones who committed atrocities in Gaza are.
...Israel hopes to keep it, but until there is a peace deal, you are an illegal transplant to occupied territory and a law breaker. Your very presence is akin to standing in the middle of someone's living room uninvited and refusing to leave because you would never hurt anyone. I know of no other country where law breakers such as yourself get right onto a talkback such as this and brag about how your conscience is clear. Did you know that when a country encourages its citizens to populate an occupied territory it's not just a minor issue, it is a crime against humanity? The Palestinians have every legal right to the 22% of the mandate that they have agreed to settle for. Maybe you'll get lucky and Ariel will be within the final border of Israel. Unless of course the Palestinians declare a state and then it would be the Green Line enforced by the UN.
sw: "No facts in article to back up his anti-government rant" Except, of course, for these.... "Twelve years ago, Teitel confessed to killing two Arabs" ... "he was released due to insufficient evidence" "at least six shooting attacks against Palestinians in 2001-2002 have remained unsolved." "three members of the Tamaizi family were shot to death by a man in a skullcap" ... "Israeli authorities have not bothered to update the family on the outcome of their investigation" "90 percent of police investigations of cases in which Israelis are suspected of committing offenses against Palestinians in the West Bank are left unsolved and are closed." "settlers were suspected of beating an elderly Palestinian man with a rifle" .. "police didn't check the alibis of two of the suspects, and a third wasn't even questioned." What do you call those, sw?
Proportion proportion proportion Avi Issacharoff and Haaretz. Our terrorists are few vs. the Palestinians many. The great majority of Israelis are sickened by the occasional Israeli terrorist, whereas high percentages of the Palestinian population worships the Palestinian terrorist and celebrate after their heinous acts. And this story... There is a lot of spin turning this guy into a nationalistic anti-Palestinian terrorist. He callously killed Jews too. Not that Jewish Terrorists have not existed, but this guy does not fit the profile really, doesn't he?
The Israel society supports them by all legal or illegal means many sellers living in the west bank are from right wing extremist they terrorize their Palestinian neighbors we see that every year when the olive harvest season begins while the IDF watching without doing anything. One can?t deny that there are good setters but they are very small minority.
After 25,000 terror attacks by Palestinians on Israeli civilians since 2000, ONE Jewish terrorist is a drop in the bucket. Let get realistic here. It would be un-natural to expect that decades of Palestinian arrogance, harassment, public disrespect of Jewish women and terror would not eventually provoke a reaction by a Jewish hot head somewhere. Still,he's a terrorist but the way Haaretz prints the story creates a distorted impression of whats really happening.
Israel has indeed arrested, tried and imprisoned those who commited such crimes and Issacharoff knows this full well. The very title of this column is nothing more than libel. It should appeal to anti-Semites on the far left, far right and the jihadists who love to post on Ha'aretz. We arrest our criminals, buddy. We don't train people to commit these crimes, send them to commit them and award them medals when they return from their "mission".
Somehow myself and vast majority of Israelis living in Judea and Samaria are quite content to legally build and live in their homes and would not dream of doing any ill to the Arabs in the area. We don't accept the libelous accusation that our presence is illegal. And not just because the people advance this canard happen to have NO place where Jews can legally live. If Meir is feeling guilt stricken I suggest that he find a nice home in Paraguay where he would fit in better, but he should stop spreading lies about his neighbors. After offering assistance many a time, and always treating Palestinians with courtesy I'm sick from this libel.
Israel has done so and they are still in jail. Stupid question from a stupid left wing extremist. Ten second internet search would have made this article superfluous
Unfortunately it wont be the only thing it'll be remenbered for
It would be nice, when citing such studies as that by Yesh Dinl, if a link to an appropriate publication site were provided. I have heard people cite statistics from studies incorrectly; more often even if they are not required to produce the actual study. Peace Stephen Connor
No facts to support his 'rant'? 90% of crimes against Pals going unsolved according to a STUDY by Yesh Din! Studies can produce facts - that's why people conduct them. You can't 'rant' against the findings unless you can present evidence which proves them invalid...which of course you can't. Pals are most certainly treated as second class citizens, and deep down, I don't believe there are many Jews who'd refute that. The siege of Gaza proves this in spades.
In the past the Israeli government has turned a blind eye to settlers who destroyed Palestinian olive groves and torched Palestinian homes and cars. This is not the way a democracy behaves and it's time that Netanyahu have his "Atalena" moment and decides once and for all that there is not Israeli law as well as Settler law. There must be one law for everyone. Israelis cannot continue to critcize the Arabs for dehumanizing them when they do the same thing to Arabs. Vigilante justice cannot be allowed to prevail in Israel. These settlers should be imprisoned or deported back to America.
These are not symmetrical scenarios. It is much more difficult for Palestinian Police to enforce the Law against Hamas or Islamic Jihad Terrorists. Often times, Islamic Jihad and Hamas have superior armaments to the Police. Ironically, any attempt by the Palestinian Police to arm themselves adequately may lead, through the inevitable conflicts with the radical Hebron settlers, to the police being shot by the IDF. It is safer to look the other way and let the IDF take care of it. If they try to act like a proper police force they may make themselves unpopular with their own community and then be killed by the IDF for their trouble. Peace. Steve
Hopefully we will now see Israel focussing as much on its Jewish criminal element as it does on Palestinians. For years, the settlers have harrassed their Palestinian neighbours and their crimes have been largely ignored. Let us hope that Israel starts to appreciate how dangerous and foolish this unequal approach is.
is kinda like answering it isn't it?
these talk backs and it seems like apartheid S Africa. arabs this and arabs that, just replace 'arab' with 'black' and you have a perfect fit. day after day talking about a group as if they were not individuals but an amorphous block. occupation sure as hell has corrupted the Israelis. seems to have done the same to worldwide israel supporters too.
I tend to agree with what some of the answers are saying regarding the lack of hard data on the issue. However, the most interesting thing is the answer themselves. There is a disease in the conflict that you are all facing and that is the "comparison Syndrome". Of course there is always a justification ... but Israel is a democratic and free country where the rule of law is the essential part of its system. It should also be in the genes of the Israelis as well who, instead comaring themsleves to the "others" should uphold with pride their unbiased condamnation of violence. Reaching a high moreal ground and standing firm on it is nothwistanding what the others do is the only way, I think, to figth terror and violence.
is connected to the arrest of this lone, twisted individual. I don't recall half this activity about even the grisliest act of Arab terrorism. I'm glad when any terrorist, Jewish or Arab, is captured and prevented from further attacks. Just sorry to witness the orgy of self-hatred Ha'aretz is indulging in. Where are Amira Hass and old Giddy? No doubt this is a banner day for them.
Nice example of enormous understatement though.
Sadly,a terrorist is a terrorist and a Jewish terrorist remains a terrorist and Israel remains a civilised country by virtue of respecting it's laws, like them or not. What others do or not does not act as examples. We should be THE example to all,as difficult as that may be
murderers of Jews are criminals.
he asks this rhetorical question and write as he does..i shiver in shame. To brush this off as "typical Issacharof" seems to be the invention of someone unwilling to do a bit of soul searching..something we dreadfully lack. This should be a wake up call for us all. All the "less violent" crimes against Arab property, soldiers humiliating Palestinians..are accepted as just being part of daily life.
The PA police are now cooperating with the IDF - especially when it comes to arresting Hamas members. Many Palestinians are not happy with this position, by the way.
Why not? A criminal is a criminal!!!
Incredulous that Issacharoff fails to mention what the Palestinians do to their own who murder Jews. They pay them reward money and call them heroes. It's also unbelievable that Issacharoff doesn't mention the cases of Jews who are arrested, tried, and jailed for their crimes - like the gang from Bat Ayin. Ha'aretz readers should keep in the front of their minds that Hamas wants to trade Gilad Shalit not for one killer, but for dozens of them. For comparison, take the Hamutal family who lived in Gaza: Palestinian gunmen sprayed the car with bullets, then came up and shot the pregnant mother and her 4 daughters in the head, including a two year old baby. The Palestinains, of course, praised this as "legitimate resistance to the occupation". Teitel is no hero. He's a criminal.
This is the real question and the answer is would not.and the proof is that he was arrested and liberated from lack of "proofs"(only two corpses).Managed Shin Bet to get new proofs?Nothing was said about new proofs. Now regarding the question if he,the Jewish terrorist was alone. So,the Jewish terrorist is surely not alone he is very well protected by Israeli society and the article shows to everyone who knows read.(advocacy group Yesh Din has found that 90 percent of police investigations of cases in which Israelis are suspected of committing offenses against Palestinians in the West Bank are left unsolved and are closed.)
Would it not suit you well, mr. writer, to mention which Israeli administration was responcible for sweeping these crimes under the carpet? I am fairly sure they were buried in the sand during so - called "left wing" administrations. Most likely under Rabin. So, is that a solved crime that pricked your touchy ass 10 years after the bodies cooled down, or is it your Swiss Bank account you have to kiss good by today because Jerusalem will not be divided?
"Twelve years ago, Teitel confessed to killing two Arabs and then took a break from such activity. Sure, he was detained for questioning after the murder of shepherd Issa Mahamra, but he was released due to insufficient evidence." Jack confessed SW. This is a fact. It is a fact that appears in this article. You can't read. Insufficient evidence = he killed a Palestinian so thats ok. And is your response the best you can come up with to rebutt the truth? As per usual, supporters of Israel's treatment of Palestinians can't respond with any well reasoned argument, all we get is 'typical Issacharoff question'.
When they can't find justice anywhere even from the law enforcement agencies in Israel.
No facts in article to back up his anti-government rant
Israel's leaders worry more about voters and Jewish policies than the non-citizen Palestinians. The UN has its hands tied for the most part by US and US leaders get most of their information from Jewish lobby groups. The PA, Hamas and all ex-Palestinain group should try forming a coalition to present a unitied front other wise Israel will use them against each other and get no where.
No they would not have.
It's quite telling that there rarely are Sabra's that behave this way. It seems to be the Americans who move to Israel and who have less regard for the Arabs than do the Israelis who were born there. Most of the extremist settlers are Americans. They are, as the late Yitzchak Rabin described "an errant weed and blot against Zionism."
What do you expect from the Israeli government? it's only when theirs overwhelming evidence and some international outcry the Israeli government ever does anything about Jewish on Arab violence.
