Weekend road accidents claim five lives
Five people were killed and five more were injured, two seriously, in five traffic accidents over the weekend.
At about midnight on Thursday, a car slid off the Be'er Sheva-Dimona road, flipping and killing both occupants.
The police have ordered an autopsy in order to confirm their identities. Early Friday morning, five passengers in a car in Be'er Sheva were injured, two seriously, when the driver attempted to make a left turn without yielding to a semitrailer in the opposite lane.
On Friday afternoon a pedestrian, Gabriel Uzon, was struck and killed on the spot by a cement mixer as he was crossing a street in Ashdod. The accident is under investigation.
Meanwhile, a passenger, Hassin al-Uzma, was killed when the driver lost control of his vehicle and overturned late Friday night at Ohelim Junction, near Ramat Hovav in the Negev.
The driver sustained moderate injuries.
Also, a 28-year-old man from Harish died of injuries sustained in an accident on Route 574 between Barkai Junction and Baka al-Garbiyeh early Friday morning. He had been riding with a driver whose license was suspended due to previous traffic offenses, police said. The driver veered off the road and collided with a safety barrier. Police suspect he may have been drinking.
