U.S.: We want Israel to free Fatah prisoners in Shalit deal

German mediator for Shalit's release has threatened to quit unless deal is reached within weeks.

By Jack Khoury, Avi Issacharoff and Barak Ravid Tags: Gilad Shalit Hamas Israel news Fatah

The ministerial team negotiating the release of Gilad Shalit is reportedly split on whether to accept Hamas' terms for the deal.

The members of the ministerial team, along with envoy Hagai Hadash and a few senior officials in the defense establishment, are the only individuals receiving updates on indirect talks with Hamas, which are being mediated by a German broker.

A senior official in the U.S. administration told Haaretz that if the deal for Shalit's release is completed, the U.S. would be interested in seeing Israel releasing Fatah prisoners as well, in addition to other gestures to bolster's Fatah's status compared to Hamas. "We are telling the Israelis that [Palestinian President Mahmoud] Abbas' situation needs to be mitigated," the U.S. official said.

Abbas said that the German mediator involved in negotiations for Shalit's release has threatened to quit unless a deal is reached within weeks. Abbas told the state-owned Egyptian daily Al Ahram that negotiations over the prisoner exchange were a matter exclusively between Israel and Hamas and the German and French mediators, and that he was not involved.

On Friday, Fox News reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been reluctant to sign a deal presented to him three weeks ago to secure Shalit's release, adding that the prime minister's seven senior cabinet members were divided over the proposed agreement.

The family of Gilad Shalit asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bureau last night to confirm a number of recent reports on the state of negotiations with Hamas to secure the abducted Israeli soldier's release.

Activists in the campaign to free Gilad, as well as the Shalit family, say that up to this point, they haven't received an answer or any other information from the prime minister.

Meanwhile, the Gaza-based newspaper Palestine reported Saturday that Mohammed Nazzal, a senior Hamas official, said that the talks were frozen due to Israel's refusal to free a significant number of prisoners whose release Hamas demands.

Nazzal went on to say that Israel is attempting to use disinformation to influence the Palestinian public and the families of Palestinian prisoners to exert pressure on Hamas. He said Hamas seeks a "respectable deal" and the release of the maximum number of Palestinian prisoners.

Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman will visit Israel today to discuss the Middle East peace process, according to an Al-Hayat report published on Friday. Though Egypt has been involved in talks for Shalit's release, Suleiman visit is not expected to focus on the deal for the release of the soldier Hamas captured in a cross-border raid more than three years ago. The report in Al-Hayat quoted Suleiman as saying that the impasse in the peace process was weakening the moderates in the Middle East, which could adversely affect the entire region. He reiterated that Israel must immediately stop all settlement construction.

    Releasing Terrorists

Releasing Terrorists from Prison is a BAD IDEA! The USA and Saudia Arabia have released many on the theory that they can be rehabilitated. Some of the terrorists have returned to kill Innocent Civilians and American Soldiers. Israel has no problem connecting the dots identifying terrorists and should think long and hard before setting a precedent by releasing even one of them that has blood on their hands!

    Pollard - Shalit - terrorists -

Pollard refuses to be released if the price is freedom for terrorist murderers - If you would be able to ask Shalit (not his father) he might just agree to folow Pollard's example, knowing the heroic self sacrifice that Pollard did to enable Israel (also to the great benefit of Israel's friendly and NOT ENEMY nation -U.S.A.) to destroy the atomic bomb prepartions of Sadam of Iraq and knowing that every time one of the freed terrorists would kill another Israeli or two that he (or his father) would be indirectly responsible for pushing such a ridiculous deal (over 1000 murderers for one sweet kid). Israel would do better, in the light of the Arabs outrageous demands re Shalit, to instead do it's best, finally, to press the USA to release Israel's adopted citizen and officially declared government agent - Pollard, after 25 years of hard labor and suffering in prison.

It seems logical thought processes are very difficult for you. A pity. It must affect your life. Presumably you are addressing my comments on the superb intelligence support the US receives from its Arab allies and the lack of Israeli participation in the fight against radical islamic terrorism. So you take the targets of US and its allies in the war against terrorism and call them my friends. Make sense to you? The former chief of Jordanian intelligence just died quite young. The CIA director commented on his "genius" and direction of the Jordanian service in penetrating and neutralizing Palestinian terrorist organizations and similar successes against Al Qaeda. The Saudis and Egyptians are almost as good. Mossad is traditionally effective against national targets with Jewish populations. There aren't many Jews in Islamic terrorist organizations. How many Al Qaeda members has Israel killed and imprisoned? Mossad is more effective in operations against the US

The idea that the US has asked that some prisoners be released, and is therefore supporting terrorism, is an unprecedentedly stupid statement. What is disgusting and immoral is that Israel holds 11,000 Palestinians in prison, many with no charges. According to EU Parliament resolution of 4 Sept'08, among the 11,000 prisoners are hundreds of women and children, most arrested in the occupied West Bank. According to the Convention of Rights of the Child, a child is defined as under age of 18. Palestinian children are treated as adults at 16 and often kept in inappropriate conditions. Around 1,000 prisoners are held on "administrative detention orders," without charge, trial or rights of defense, and detention orders are often prolonged for years. Human Rights reports state Palestinian prisoners are subject to abuses and torture. Even 48 elected members of the Palestinian Legislative Council are in prison. Mistreated women prisoners do not have access to adequate medical care.

From day one President Obama has shown that he is ready to sacrifice Isarel(G-d forbid) to please his new found brothers. His handlers feel the same way as the Pres and J-Street. Everyone should let their Reps and the Whitehouse know that they have given the Arabs a false sense of confidence and high expectation that Israel will fold under Left wing pressure and give away the country store to those who cannot and will not illustrate that they want or can handle peace with a Jewish State

You allow this because Israel would be totally isolated in the world without US overwhelming support. Most Americans wish we had dumped the Israeli burden decades ago.The US has been a lonely Israeli ally for over 60 years. For all those years, the US protected Israel in the UN with vetoes, guaranteed Israels international loans and gave Israel aid, last year $3 billion. With everything, loans, grants, etc., total cost to US is over $3 trillion. In addition, the US has consistently sacrificed its own national interests in the ME to support and further those of Israel. Its been a very bad investment. Many Americans believe our national interests lie in the Arab world, not in Israel. Arab nations provide oil, fought with us in the Gulf war, give us military bases, support the US in the IMF, World Bank and the UN. Some Arab allies provide superb intelligence on Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Israel provides none of that and nothing in war against terrorism.

Israel has no moral rights whatsoever, much less for release of Pollard. Pollard is a US citizen and a traitor. Palestinians are prisoners of an occupying power in violation of international law. I am unsure what motivates you to exaggerate US aid to the Palestinians, and others, at the expense of Israel. But I know it's dishonest. Currently the US gives $225 million to Palestine for economic aid. No military aid. US gives $61.5 million in humanitarian aid to Gaza thru USAID, UNRWA and the International Red Cross. Over 30% of all US foreign aid goes to Israel. The US provides $721.7 M to Jordan and $2.2 B to Egypt. US direct aid to Israel is $3 billion a year. That does not include unpaid loans, grants, interest lost on grants, guarantees of Israeli international loans, etc. With everything, the US has provided Israel $3 trillion of US tax payer money. Probably 90% of all nations give us airspace and landing approval. Israel has NEVER re-armed US armed forces. Thats a lie. Their intelligence is of no help on war on terrorism. We have never used their troops. They mount espionage ops against us, and ignore our requests for peace making steps. It's a very bad investment.

I don't know what makes you think Israel is important ally in fight against radical Islamic terrorism. You must read Israeli propaganda. Arab countries are the US most effective allies in struggle against terrorism. Countries like Saudi Arabia are in the front line of the war against Islamic terrorism along with Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and the Gulf states. They provide the US superb intelligence support, and military bases. Recently, over a 4-day period the Saudis killed 15 members of Al Qaeda, and they have over 200 in prison. It is also supporting Yemen on its NE border with air strikes against Islamic terrorist elements. (Al Qaeda.) You should know Israel is not involved in this fight. It talks big but considers Hamas and Hezbollah its primary terrorist targets. But they don't attack the US nor other nations involved in the fight, and are considered by everybody but Israel to be small potatoes and not worthy of attention. How many Al Qaeda members has Israel killed and imprisoned?

You gripe at Israel receiving $3 Billion in U.S. aid yearly. But the Palestinian Authority gets $14B annually and you say NOTHING. Egypt, African countries, North & South Korea, Bosnia, and MANY, MANY other nations receive US aid - far more than we give Israel. No comment? But wait, and ponder this while your mouth is still muffled? What does Israel gives us? Airspace, fly-by and landing privileges, and refueling privileges at Israel?s expense. Anything else? They've re-armed our troops countless times, delivered combat aid, offered up their soldiers to assist when needed, and Israel provides us endless intelligence we couldn?t otherwise access. Guess what these other nations give us? Nothing! The other Middle East countries give us insults, terror attacks, and countless planned terror attacks which need to be thwarted (thank the thwarting in good part to Israel's great intel). Those nations then DENY us use of their airspace, landing, refueling, re-supply lines and stil

Only 1 year ago the US was fighting a war on terror it didn't matter who the groups or individuals were if they were terrorists then they were an enemy of the US. Now Obama comes along and it appears has started to support terror. Hamas were working on a price which did not include these individuals but now Obama butts in and says hey release some Fatah people as a nice bonus. This is a disgusting & immoral demand if its coming from the US and it just more evidence that Obama sees Israel as Americas enemy if its the enemy of the muslim world. If it was the other way around & an American soldier had been taken and Israel said release an extra 3 terrorists just as a bonus all Americans jews included would be up in arms. There is an artice on Haaretz today asking why Israelis hate Obama, well this is just another example of his policies towards Israel. The man is a disgrace to both himself and office of President of the United States when he asks for things like this.

Maybe, he can get Fatah to reciprocate by giving up its demand for Israel to be ceded to mass repatriation of Palestinian diaspora descendants. Naw. He's for that too.
