U.S.-based rabbi: Edict against renting to Arabs endangers Jews abroad

Influential U.S. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto says letter signed by dozens of prominent religious leaders might increase racism against Jews, who 'won't be able to live in New York or anywhere else in the world.'

By Yair Ettinger

Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto, the New York-based rabbi whose followers include many high society names, has condemned the letter prohibiting Jews to rent or sell property to Arabs, signed by 50 municipal rabbis.

"This letter has put the lives of Jews abroad in danger," he told his followers on Thursday. "It comes from stupidity."

Pinto, well-known for providing spiritual guidance to celebrities and businessmen in Israel and the United States, made the statement during a visit here following a recent operation. Participating in a welcoming party in his honor last week were Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz,Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Religious Services Minister Yaakov Marg, National Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau, three Kadima MKs and Deputy Education Minister Meir Porush. Also present were the head of logistics in the IDF, Maj. Gen. Avi Zamir, police officers, businessmen Ilan Ben-Dov and Jacky Be- Zaken, and journalist Shalom Yerushalmi.

Pinto's father, Rabbi Chaim Pinto, the rabbi of Ashdod, signed the letter but withdrew his signature shortly after its publication, saying he had signed it by mistake and was not aware of its true content.

Yoshiyahu Pinto told his followers on Thursday that since the letter was released, "New York Jews come to me frightened, saying the newspapers are full of stories on what is going on in Israel. This letter is founded in stupidity. There's great racism against Jews in America today. What does this letter mean? It means that Jews won't be able to live in New York or anywhere else in the world."

Pinto did not comment on the moral or religious aspects of the letter, saying only that "there are many who think we are at the beginning of salvation, but salvation still has not come."

The New York rabbi spent last night praying with thousands of his followers in the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.

Rabbi you learned nothing from history. Maybe this is too secular for you. In history you have the Trojan Horse. You rent or sell to them you made a Trojan hosre that destroyed Troy. Do you know what you are saying. You cannot hide they hate in New York they will come and get you there Arabs want to destroy you as they do all of Israel (ALL JEWS).

Why should we accommodate people who hate us. You think renting or selling to them they will change. They want to destroy us. Perhaps a few sheiks will send a few billion to buy Israel and not rent to us or maybe sponsor them to destroy us. Rockets and wars have not worked. This Rabbi is not living in Israel he has his own USA interests in mind. He is blinded by his own interests. If he thinks this will protect him well Rabbi Pinto good luck on your own. Let your daughters marry them and you can call yourself Mendelssohn. I think that is where he may be heading by what he says. We do not sell our Souls and our land and that is what you want us to do for what. Israel is only Jewish. Let the whole world stand on its head it will not change.

The the letter by 50 rabbis prohibiting Jews to rent or sell property to Arabs is by any definition racist. It is however not as racist as throwing 800000 people out of a country because they are "arabs" or as racist as occupying the land where millions of "Arabs" live or as racist as slowly building "Jew only"villages on "Arab" land. I do not think the letter makes much difference other than opening the eyes of some about what happens in Israel. For some it might make it harder to remember that millions of people of Jews religion do not automatically condone everything that happens in Israel or what some Rabbis say.

We can't live in fear. The reason the Rabbis who signed the letter are wrong is that it is a racist, ignorant, and hurtful. We do not live in a shtetl anymore. The world has moved on to where different cultures live side by side everywhere. Why aren't the relgious adapting to that?

I've just heard the rabbi of a synagogue in London say on the radio that she is afraid that what the Israeli rabbis are doing will make life difficult for her and Diaspora Jews. She dismissed the argument based on the Torah that the land of Israel is for Jews. She said that she is a Zionist and yet she disapproves of what the Israeli Rabbis want in this matter. She did not use the argument that making Israel more exclusively Jewish will increase Iran's determination to destroy what it calls "a Jewish entity". Instead, it was a purely selfish appeal to orthodox Jews in Israel not to make life difficult for Jews in the Diaspora, and said without any acknowledgement of Israel's current difficulties.

This is the usual paranoid reflex that contains no reality, and also conveniently deflects from the fact that this is racism, pure and simple. Nobody in New York, or anywhere else, is in danger, my dear rabbi. We have understood for many years the racist character of Israel and have grown used to it. Nobody will attack you, nobody will even blink. We are used to it. However, you may be a danger to yourself.

The Rabbis' letter is just one of many indicators of the tone of Israeli leadership and society. Any government that attaches itself to a single religion is inclined to abuse of the individual, even if that individual is a member of that very same religion. A religious based nationalism inevitably aborts historic values of that religion for the sake of preserving and enhancing the state. That has been happening in Israel. The victums have been Arabs, Christians, secular Jews and Jews that view their religion as a more personal relationship to God.

"great racism against Jews in America today." - Rabbi Pinto. That is a bit of overstatement. That is a bit of overstatement. Racial bigotry and hatred towards Jews is but a shadow of what was the case 50 years ago. Then it was much diminished from what it had been during the height of the emigration of Ashkenazim from Eastern Europe about 90 years ago.

With great respect Rabbi, what you say doesn't make sense. Its like saying if I attack you, then your followers can attack my brother, even tho he had nothing to do with my attack on you. What do Jews living in New York have to do with what a Rabbi in Israel writes? I have never seen that Arabs can't live in New York tho Jews are barred from even visiting most Arab countries, let alone living there.

Jews can visit arab countries. Stop the spread of lies. Israel and most arab states are in a state of war. That's why the Israelis and Arabs can't visit each others' countries. Interestingly, Americans and Australians Nationals with Arab names have huge problems visiting Israel. So tell the truth.
