U.S. army chief heads to Israel as fears over attack on Iran mount
Visit comes as U.S. attempts to determine Israel's intentions with regard to a possible attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The visit comes as the United States attempts to coordinate with Israel on the issue of Iran's nuclear capabilities, and to determine Israel's intentions with regard to a possible attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Dempsey may also meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Ahead of Dempsey's visit, the Wall Street Journal published statements by senior American officers who said the United States had increased preparations for a possible Israeli attack on Iran. They also said the United States has refreshed plans for defending American installations in the Middle East in the event of a retaliation by Iran.
One senior officer told the Wall Street Journal that the United States' concerns regarding a possible Israeli attack on Iran were increasing.
In November, following a visit to Israel by U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Haaretz reported that Netanyahu and Barak had refused to vow against attacking Iran without first coordinating with the United States.
According to the Wall Street Journal, both U.S. President Barack Obama and Panetta have conveyed messages through quiet channels to senior Israeli officials regarding the serious implications of an Israeli attack on Iran. They also reportedly told Israel it should allow more time for sanctions on Iran to take effect.
In the meantime, the United States is preparing for various scenarios following an Israeli attack on Iran, senior American officials reportedly told the Wall Street Journal. These include an attack by Shi'ites in Iraq on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. There are currently 15,000 U.S. citizens in Iraq.
Dempsey's visit to Israel also comes against the backdrop of increased tension between Iran and the West over Tehran's threats to close the Straits of Hormuz, which would compromise oil shipments to the West, and threats to avenge the recent assassination of an Iraqi nuclear scientist on Wednesday. The regime is accusing Israel, the United States and Britain of the assassination.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has denied responsibility for the attack. Israeli President Shimon Peres said Israel had no role in the attack, to the best of his knowledge.
The spokesman for Iran's Joint Armed Forces Staff, Massoud Jazayeri, said: "Our enemies, especially America, Britain and the Zionist regime [Israel], have to be held responsible for their actions." According to a report in the New York Times on Friday, senior American officials said Obama recently told the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khameneii, via a secret channel that closing the Straits of Hormuz would constitute crossing a "red line." Obama reportedly said such an action would draw a severe American response.
Also this weekend, Netanyahu said in an interview with the Weekend Australian that he believed the strong sanctions against Iran were damaging the regime in Tehran. He said he thought a combination of the sanctions and the threat of U.S. military action against its nuclear facilities could force Iran to back down.
Netanyahu said the Iranian economy was "showing clear signs of stress."
"For the first time," he said, "I see Iran wobble under the sanctions that have been adopted and especially under the threat of strong sanctions on their central bank."
Netanyahu's remarks notwithstanding, a senior Israeli official told Haaretz yesterday that there was disappointment in Jerusalem over the fact that harsher sanctions have not been imposed on Iran.
"Without sanctions on Iran's central bank and on its oil exports, the regime will not back down and will not stop its nuclear program," the official said.

Israel is convinced that if it attacks Iran then the USA will have no choice but to join in. What the Americans are trying to tell them is that *if* the USA jumps in on Israel's side *then* the Russians and the Chinese wight just jump in on the side of Iran. The result won't be the clean dismemberment of Iran that the Israelis are expecting, but instead a very, very messy replay of the Korean War.

These sanctions are starting to work alright - If your wanting to start a war. Im wondering if Iran will make the mistake most countries make and that is sit there and wait for it (let the US and israel get all set up and hit first) at which point its all over or will Iran do what others failed to do and hit first and do some damage before they go down. An attack by Israel on an Iranian nuclear reactor is likely to cause a leak of radiation into the civilian Iranian population. I suggest this will have a similar effect as attacking Tehran with a 'naked' nuclear weapon. Just the other day Netanyahu stated that Iran is beginning to hobble under Western economic sanctions. On its face, this suggests that he will rush to strike Iran and give sanctions more time to work. So why are the Americans (and Israeli analysts) so hysterical about Israeli attack? There are two possibilities here: 1. General Dempsey's visit was arranged before Netanyahu spoke, and the visit is no longer considered important but will not be cancelled. 2. The Americans consider Netanyahu a hopeless liar, and suspect that he voiced his opinion on sanctions just to let everybody cool down while Israel preparing the attack. My own opinion is option 1. Netanyahu is indeed a tremendous liar, but sometimes he tells the truth, and this is one of these times. I find it hard to believe that a political coward like Netanyahu will take the risk of attack before the next Israeli elections. After the elections, expected in about a year, he may attack.

If America attacks Iran, then he will not only have a bigger war than before, but the Iraq war would be reignited. I have wobbled on the implications of Iran developing a nuclear weapon but I currently believe allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons would be a dangerous precedent. The Iranians would constantly terrorize the western world and its neighbors and they are so unstable that they could never be trusted to abstain on the basis that we would hit back following their attack. Moreover they could smuggle a bomb into a country and blow it up even if they could not launch it with a long range missile. Why not simply tell them that if they do not allow open inspection and observers on the scene they could scratch one of their cities; and name the city and the time. Would Iran take the risk? Maybe they would assume we were bluffing but not risk the second or third city. Once this is done that will close the door to Iran and any new nations developing nuclear weapons. It is absolutely essential to end development by any nation of nuclear weapons. If this plan is followed it will end any new development of nuclear weapons. I cannot think of a better nation than Iran for being the precedent for making this happen.
Let's assume that Israel would attempt a strike on Iran. They would have to fly over Saudi Arabia or Iraq. If these nations did not challenge an Israeli overflight they would be considered equally complicit in an attack on Iran. Considering the Shiite majority in Iraq this would be a major issue and the government would likely fall and, with Iran's help, dissolve into civil war. (If Iraq was overflown) As for the Saudis, yes they don't like Iran, but they don't like Israel even more. The Saudis would die before they would become openly complicit with an Israeli attack on an Islamic state. Such an attack would certainly kill civilians even if it did not accomplish the mission. Having their bluff called (to make an attack) would really put Israel on the spot Such an attack has the potential to cripple the relationship with America and touch off a mideast war. Added to this is the opportunity Iran would have to show us what they can do with their missiles. I think that such an attack could be the beginning of the end for Israel, but I don't think that they would mind gambling with the lives of Americans, Iranians, Saidis, and Iraqis, and, maybe a few Israeli Jews.

If the US allows Israel to refit their fighters on US aircraft carriers the attack on Iran would have proper logistics. Conversely, If Saudi Arabia allows Israel to refit and refuel in Saudi Arabia an attack would be feasible. This would be a good gesture towards peace and future acts of cooperation. This strike against Iran nuclear weapons factories would be beneficial for the region and the world.

America has given Israel a high tech air force free of charge along with lots of other high tech goodies. The idea is that this was supposed to make Israel able to defend itself. Sadly, even with all the technology advantages, the IDF was unable to defeat the Hizbollah militai in the 2006 war. Israel would far rather have America fight it's wars, as with the Iraq war. The two scenarios are that, like Iraq, Israel gets America to attack and sits on the sidelines and does nothing or, if America doesn't fall for that again, Israel will mount their own attack, such as they are able, knowing that America would be forced to defend them after they failed. The two things that Israel has going for them are (1) Obama said that America's ties to Israel are "unbreakable". (this is a motivation to misbehave) (2) Israel is never held to account for their actions. They can attack whomeever they like and, in a worst case scenario just draw America into another war while they watch. It sounds ugly, but this is the unvarnished truth. Israelis may prefer to spin it a little bit in order that the IDF does not appear so sad and inept, but who can blame them, especially since the IDF is sad and inept.
The war in Iraq was fought by America for American -not Israeli- interests. The problems in the Israeli effort against the Hez in 2006 were political and not military failures. Israel fights its own wars. America has never fought a war for Israel.
The Israel IDF is one of the best in the world. The reason why 2006 war ended like it did is because Israel maybe used only 0.5% of the air force capabilities. Israel didnt have to get by foot to Lebanon, all they had to do is to strike by air and finished everybody there within one day. The problem is that Israel has answers to give(which I fins it stupid, because I dont see other countries do that) when they attack. Therefore, they are not using all they can. When Israel will attack Iran, it's obvious that Syria,Gaza AND lebanon will attack back only this time Israel will strike back with everything they can, which is about time and this time they better know not to deal with Israel anymore. So besides handling with the Iranian nuc israel will deal with the enemy around her. Israel is a strong country and no body should ever doubt it.
