Three killed in weekend of road accidents
Three people were killed over the weekend in three separate traffic accidents in the center of the country. The victims were a 17-year-old girl from Ra'anana, a 49-year-old woman from Lod and a man, aged 87, from Hod Hasharon.
Seventeen-year-old Danit Barel of Ra'anana had reportedly been riding a motor scooter in the city early Saturday morning when the scooter driven by her companion hit a tree, throwing the pair off the scooter at the intersection of Ahuza and Jerusalem Streets. She was critically injured and rushed to Meir Hospital in Kfar Sava, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
Her companion, who was lightly injured, initially claimed the motor scooter had been hit by another vehicle, but then admitted he had lost control of the scooter. Accident investigators think Barel may not have been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Her companion's driver's license has been suspended for 90 days, and the scooter impounded by the police.
In another accident in Hod Hasharon on Friday afternoon, a resident of an old-age home near the site of the crash was killed and his wife seriously injured while riding in a car driven by their son. The son and another passenger reportedly sustained light to moderate injuries. The car in which they were riding apparently collided with another car at the Neve Ne'eman junction. Road work was under way at the intersection at the time of the accident, and police investigators are seeking witnesses to the accident.
In another collision late Thursday night, 49-year-old Lod resident Irina Kopil was killed when the driver of a car in which she was riding made a U-turn near Moshav Sataria, between the Bilu Junction and Ramleh and hit a Jeep coming from the opposite direction.
Kopil was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver, who was seriously injured, was taken to Assaf Harofeh Hospital in Tzrifin.
One of the occupants of the other car, a pregnant woman, was taken to the hospital for observation. Her sister, who was also in the car, was lightly injured. Police are investigating whether the drivers of either vehicle were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
In the Western Galilee, seven people, including a baby, were injured on Friday in two separate accidents. In one of the incidents, a motorcycle driver was moderately to seriously injured when he reportedly lost control of his cycle at the entrance to the village of Hurfeish. In the second accident, six members of a family from Deir-Al-Assad were injured when their car overturned on the main road in the village of Yarka. A woman passenger was very seriously injured in the accident.
