Dear Cormac too, Your suggestion that ships, containing humanitarian aid for relieving an illegal blockade, are legitimate targets of war is at best misguided. When one considers that these boats will be crewed by unarmed civilians, then you are promoting war crimes. What is illuminating about Israeli apologists is that they have no compunction about supporting the killing of anyone who stands up against the Israeli leviathan. Little does the media acknowledge that Israel lets in 10s to 100s of trucks full of basic commodities into Gaza every day in order to keep a humanitarian crisis from evolving. Israel on the other hand is keeping check on what goes in and what goes out. This is to slow down the Hammas military regime's request to rebuild itself, and will hopefully inhibit the chances of another war, and perhaps trigger a regime change in the meantime. If aid organizations wanted to give aid, they could do it via the Israeli borders. This activity of the "Rachel Corrie" ship, by its very namesake demonstrates very clearly that what is going on here is the generation of a strong political message showing the "extreme left" wing's identification with Hammas's struggle. This unholy alliance is horrific. Hammas is an Islamo-facist hate movement bent on the destruction of Israel. It stands for everything that the left wing despises.

This has nothing to do with wishing harm to come to Israel. The ships in the convoy are merely on a humanitarian mission.

Perhaps you don't know but the region of Darfur in the Sudan is landlocked. So a boat there, however needed, is not that useful. And the point here is to break the blockade, which is illegal... those ships, no matter how much cargo they can carry, will only be able to ease part of the suffering in Gaza. Important, but more importantly, it will put the focus on the illegality of the occupation and the blockade, where Israel again and again make decisions to starve people into submission. Which will probably not work. Would that work for you?

There is a blockade, but what you do not seem to get is that the blockade is illegal according to international law and that the waters outside Gaza is considered international waters, and to board a ship or worse torpedo one there would be - plain and simple - piracy.

The ship should have been called The Exodus and should be fully equipped with facilities to transmit the pictures when the Jews board it. Back in 2003, the Israeli Knesset passed a resolution saying that Israel was not occupying the West Bank, as this land had been given to them by God in perpetuity. That is to say, the Israeli Knesset justifies its sovereignty from a holy book. The Old Testament, with all its myths and fables, is the basis for Israeli democracy. Israel is in effect a theocratic state. You are therefore asking Hamas to give up its democratic aspirations. A couple of years later, the Knesset passed a bill authorising the extra-judicial assassination of its opponents. This bill has resulted in the deaths of over 450 Palestinians and around a further 250 innocent bystanders. This cold-blooded murder is state sanctioned. You want Hamas to stoop to the same level. Here is the third example. In early 2009, the Knesset passed a bill banning all Arab-Israeli political parties from standing in general elections. This disenfranchised at a stroke 20% of the population whose only crime was to be non-Jewish. You are therefore asking Hamas to be equally discriminatory. People in the region live in fear. Eight long years it took for Israel to reluctantly move into Gaza for fear that a military incursion will hurt the Palestinian populace.
