The IDF's latest target: Supermodel Bar Refaeli

Top officer says products advertised by model should be boycotted over her evasion of military service.

By Haaretz Staff Tags: Israel news IDF

The Israel Defense Forces human resources chief Maj. Gen. Avi Zamir yesterday called for a boycott of products advertised by Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli.

Speaking at a lecture at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Zamir was asked why the army did not act against Refaeli, who married under false pretenses so she could evade military service. Zamir said that, according to law, he could not act against Refaeli. "She went and married a 37-year-old guy, so what can I do?" he said.

"At the end of the day," according to Zamir, "she is the one who has to look at herself in the mirror. We are a society that has an army, and Bar Refaeli doesn't have to participate in ads for Fox [clothing] - and if she advertises Fox then you shouldn't buy their products."

"The remarks made by the head of human resources are ridiculous and shameful," the model's mother, Tzipi Levin, said in an interview on the Web site Walla. "Before they attack Bar, let them look through their own house and see who they don't draft. Bar will continue to succeed and they will continue to talk and annoy us. We are among those who act and succeed, and they will continue to talk."

    • David
    • 14.01.10
    • 19:14

I consider myself a principled Zionist, but would have happily helped Bar avoid the draft if it meant marrying her. In any event, if Israel had any public relations sense at all, they'd offer Refaeli a chance to serve the military in some unique way more befitting her "talents". Ronald Reagan never fired a shot in anger, but he did his time with the U.S. Army. Clearly, Refaeli's potential as a goodwill ambassador exceeds what services she could have offered as a jobnik.

The IDF is jealous that they could not exploit Bar Refaeli themselves. If she had served in the IDF. It would have used her Supermodel status for their own promotion without having to pay the enormous fee she usually gets. One can hardly believe that the army would have just stuck her into any old unit and quietly forgotten about who she was, and what selling power she has.

I would contend with Bar's decision to manipulate her way out of serving if it were not for my predominate opinion no women should serve in the IDF. It reeks of sexual misconduct, reinforces sexual hierarchy, and promotes the notion that men are macho and women are little Lolita's, regardless of the Uzi swung over her shoulders ! If Rafaeli's choice is to objectify herself sexually at least let her be paid rather than forced to hand out freebies the IDF demands. Make no mistake about it!

Gen. Zamir is focusing on Rafaeli because she's a *role* model. The last thing the IDF needs is a generation of girls who think "Rafaeli didn't serve. Why should I?" And, yes, I oppose the blanket exemptions given to yeshiva students. (Did the religious not fight during Roman times?) Those who *do* serve should be rewarded: granted preferential access to government jobs and university placement, for example. Scholarships and breaks on mortgages would be nice too. And, yes, recruiters are right to watch out for "fakers", whether they are secular Tel Aviv artists or girls claiming to be "religious". I'm hardly sympathetic to those who excuse her for her looks. Many, many years ago I was a student at Hebrew U. My physics lab partner in my brief time there was a very smart, and quite striking, young woman. And *she* served!

Bar Rafaeli will need to get a life, a real life, one day. I served in the IDF once upon a time, and thought it an honour - although the IDF was as far from perfect then as it undoubtedly is now. Thinking of the IDF, Avi Zamir needs to get a life right now, and think carefully how important his opinion really is in this matter, in the scale of things. Come to think of it, i need to get a life too.

I came to israel as a 24 year old. Spent one year volunteering in my profession. married a tudai (in the army). my daughter did the army and now my son is in the army. as far as i am concerned i wish we didn't need an army. but look where we live. i wish my son would be in university studying and having fun as all 19 year olds do.i am proud that my beautiful and talented daughter served and now my son serves but at the same time shocked by the inequality of who gets out of the army and who does more then their fair share of the awful burden.

she could evade the IDF service if she pretended to go to a yeshiva, as many healthy young men do. she could have married before the age of 18, like most hareddis girls do. No, she did not go to a yeshiva and she got married at a later age with the man of HER CHOICE and she lives abroad. so what? she does not serve in the army and she will pay less taxes, there is no crime here

As a father of three children that serve and served in the army, I am appalled by the double standards the army is using.

True, Bar evaded her army service. But she is gone, she chooses to be out of the country most of the time. Clean your own house. 50% of the eligible draftees who live here in Israel don't enlist. They have fake psychiatric problems..only from the best family's but then go to art and music school who gladly except them .You have the girl's who suddenly become religious and do sherut leumi in the hospitals. And of course the ultra orthodox are are all brillant yeshiva scholars and just can't serve because the kashrut in the army isn't kosher enough or they might see a female soldier or they don't have time to pray. Give me a break. So leave the supermodel alone and clean shop at home.
