Sokolow's niece 'not Jewish enough' to marry here
After being told she needed to prove the Jewishness of her maternal lineage for four generations, Hillary Rubin is questioning her decision to move to Israel.
By Raphael AhrenHillary Rubin felt she was living out her ancestors' dream when she decided to move to Israel in 2006. Now she says she is being forced to leave the country to fulfill her own dream - getting married.
"Zionism runs in my family," the Detroit native says, adding that her grandfather's uncle was Zionist leader Nahum Sokolow.

But after filing for a wedding license and being told she needed to prove the Jewishness of her maternal lineage for four generations, she is wondering whether she made the right decision in immigrating to a Jewish state that doubts her Jewishness.
"I'm furious with this country right now," the 29-year-old international relations student told Anglo File this week. "I'm the great-great-niece of a prominent Zionist and I am always a supporter of this country, but this really frustrated me and I can totally understand why a lot of my Anglo friends left this country."
Rubin, who was raised in a Conservative household, produced letters from four Conservative rabbis and one Chabad rabbi attesting to her Jewishness. But the Herzliya Rabbinate said the letters were not enough and asked her to bring ketubot, or religious wedding contracts, as well as birth or death certificates of her mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
"It was made very clear that without ketubot and without birth certificates from four generations, I would need to go to the Beit Din [local rabbinical court]," Rubin told Anglo File this week. "I told him, time and time again, that my grandparents are Shoah survivors [and thus their ketubot no longer exist] and I was told that wasn't his problem."
The Herzliya Rabbinate responded that it kept to strict standards "of Moses and Israel" for affirming one's faith.
There is no civil marriage in Israel, forcing couples to either go through a local Rabbinate or marry abroad. The Chief Rabbinate recently enacted new guidelines automatically sending marriage candidates whose parents did not wed in Israel to a local rabbinical court to determine whether they are really Jewish.
The new regulations do not specify which documents are needed to conclusively determine a person's Jewishness. It's likely that Rubin's letters would not have proven sufficient for them, according to a rabbi with knowledge of the system.
Rubin fears the rabbinical court might declare her a non-Jew and thus decided to get married without the Rabbinate's blessing. Instead, Rubin and her Johannesburg-born fiance' Craig Glaser will tie the knot in a Conservative ceremony on a moshav in the Sharon region in two weeks. Since Conservative weddings are not recognized by the state, they plan to fly for one day to Cyprus for a civil marriage - an option used by many Israeli couples unable, or unwilling, to satisfy the Rabbinate's demands.
The rabbinical court does not actually declare somebody a non-Jew without proof of their belonging to another religion, but Rubin would still run the risk of being left in the situation of not being officially Jewish by the state's standards should she turn to them.
"At this point, I no longer want to play be their rules. I want to fight what they're doing," Rubin, who observes Shabbat and keeps kosher, said.
When Anglo File called the Rabbinate's marriage department this week, a man who said he was its director but declined to state his name said he remembered the case. He said the couple was referred to the rabbinical court in Tel Aviv to have their Jewishness affirmed, and that before this is done he cannot let them get married. When he learned they had decided to get married in Cyprus to avoid the rabbinical court, he said nonchalantly: "Good for them. We are only marrying people according to the law of Moses and Israel."
Rubin and her fiance' - whose documents were accepted by the rabbinate as valid proof of Jewishness - did not even want to try to convince the rabbinical court that she is a Jew. "I can't provide them with the documents they want. I am the granddaughter of four Holocaust survivors, any documents my grandparents may have had from their families we don't have anymore ... Who has a death certificate from somebody who was gassed to death? These things are frustrating because my grandparents were persecuted for being Jewish, and here I am being told I'm not exactly Jewish."
She is also concerned they might not declare her Jewish because her parents are divorced and she can no longer provide their ketuba. The facts that her parents' get, or bill of divorce, was prepared by a Conservative rabbi and that her mother has since remarried a Catholic would further lead the rabbis to deny her their official stamp of approval, she said.
The young couple believes the consequences of going through the rabbinical court are "much worse" than not going at all.
"It's as if one day you wake up and you're no longer a Jew in the Jewish State but outside Israel you are still Jewish enough to be hated by most of the world," Rubin says. "It's a weird feeling. It's hard enough to grasp the idea that your Judaism may not be valid but then to be told you're not actually Jewish according to the Jewish state - it's ostracizing."

the sad story of hillary rubin.it is about time to start investigation.the rabbnot about bribes that taking to close there eyes.thy are burdin on our pockets.
Christians are not a race. The Saxons & Normans can also have red hair just as a Hungarian, Polik, or any other European. Let me tell you why a Ketuba or Get is not sufficiant because it was prepared by a Conservative Rabbi. It does not prove beyond a doubt your mother is Halachically Jewish. The article says Quote "I am the grand-daughter of 4 Holocaust survivors" Unquote. This tells me all 4 grandparents are survivors then you tell me otherwise. The Beth Din, of which you REFUSED to go, only strengthens my suspecions. You DO have access to your mother's birth certificate and her mother's birth certificate. I know exactly what the Orthodox Rabbis are looking for and why. Take these 2 documents to the Beth Din or forever stay silent. AMEN
Who gave them the right to decide who is a Jew? Oh, of course, Israeli politicians. I made aliyah in the 1990s bnut went back to the USA after six years, in part because of I was disllusioned with this kind of thing. I told A.B. Yehoshua when he came to Georgetown University last year that it is much easier for me to be a Jew in the Diapsora than in Israel. This disgusting story shows why.
Yep, religion poisons everything, throw in a dash of nationalism and this is what you get..truly pathetic.
as i said i paid 50$ to have certificate before on comment number 215.iwould like to add .that in order to have a certificate for kosher restaurant you can get by bribing the rabbi.thats facts that i know in israel .thy are corrupt.i fell now that they are brcoming burden on us by all mean .they are bleeding us finacialy.
Between the whole conversion thing, between Israel's fakatka marriage laws, between Israel denying Jews from Africa and some from Asia that they are Jews, ec....Does Israel want Jews?!? Yes Jews, come to Israel, you'll be less protected for being Jewish and you will have less rights - all in the name of Judaism. Land of milk and honey my tuchis!
I'm sure someone else already made this comment, but this is about the Orthodox view of Liberal Judaism more then anything else. Do you think that the rabbinate would have asked for four generations of documentation if a black hat wearing orthodox man walked into his office? Of course not. He would have accepted the assertion that yes he is Jewish enough if he didn't have all documents to prove it. The fact that this woman is "conservative-ish" is why the Rabbinate is making it so hard for her. Instead of working together, he's pulling us apart. Also, I don't know what the mothers marital status has to do with anything, but I am responsible for my actions, not my mother - if she gets divorced and marries and Hindu, what does that have to do with my Judaism? Am I responsible for my whole family now? Cosmo
She is so proud of her grandfather's uncle the great Zionist leader Nahum Sokolow but what of her divorced mother married out to a Catholic. The Rabbinate exists to ensure the rules of the jewish religion are kept. If you can't satisfy the rules of the US Immigration authorities you can't get a green card. If you can't satisfy the Rabbinate you can't have a religious marriage. What is so wrong with either of those situations?
If you can't satisfy the Rabbinate you can't have a religious marriage. Actually if you can't satisfy the rabbinute you can't have *ANY* marriage, as there is no civil option in Israel
of your ilk who snap and snarl as they procalim their adherence to the Law of Moses and Israel. The words of Hosea apply to you: "they slaughter men that kiss calves." What does her mother remarrying a Catholic have to do with her status as a Jew? Were you, pure Jew that you are, asked by your rabbi to produce ketubot of four generations? Ensure the rules of the Jewish relgiin are kept? But in the process destroy the individual, but then thats not their problem> Nor yours obviously. May you live to see the same hardship with your son or daughter.
What's wrong is that the Rabbinate defines "Jew" more narrowly than fits the current reality, indeed, the reality of any era. There should be separation of church and state. Bring on civil marriage in Israel.
Contrast this disgusting treatment of a TRUE Jew in Israel, with the fact that Israeli leaders shower highly favored Muslims with many gifts and with Jewish land. To please totalitarian, political Islam, 10,000 Jews were viciously ethnically cleansed from Gaza-rendering the Jews homeless and impoverished. Many Jews had to live in tents for a long time. The same terrible punishment for being Jewish and not Muslim, is threatened against hundreds of thousands of Jews in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. Human rights for Jews now.
or a Christian Zionist. Can she come in, dear rabbis?
Orthodox zealots prevent the lady from getting married, but strangely they will consider her Jew enough to serve in the army - this way they do not have to risk their lives themselves.
If she is not Jewish enough then at least 80% of the population are not Jewish enough. Considering that the ultraorthodox have fought in the high court just to get a religious (sephardic) girl accepted to a religious (askenazi) school, you have to wonder where it will end.... First they came for the converts, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a convert.... then they came for the conservatives....
1969 i gave 50$ to yhe rabbi in order that my future wife dot have to go to the mikva.i got the certificate.
good for you that you went over their little heads and married out of the country
It's quite interesting that you can make aliya, serve in the army and very possibly get hurt and do this quite easily without having to provide a ridiculous amount of paper work proving your Jewishness going back several generations. However, in order to get married you have to jump through hoops, unless of course you decide to play the game by the rabbinate's rules and go through a quickie and quite costly "conversion", it's a financial scam and the haredim are the only one that benefit from it.
Ms Rubin shouldn't have to prove anything to the rabbis in Herzliyah. She should be able to marry whom she wants. This is what we get for allowing fanatics to take over our democracy; for shame. Don't expect the cowardly govt. members to do anything; they will just continue to suck up to the fanatics until we lose all our rights and they are in control.
If Israel becomes a fundamentalist bigoted theocracy like Iran, Ahmedinejad will be so pleased that instead of being an enemy of Israel, he would make an alliance with Israel instead. For this reason, maybe we should give even more power to the ultra-Orhtodox guys here, this way the next thing we will do is to make adultery punishable by stoning to death like Iran. This would please Al Qaeda too, and maybe they would then accept Israel as a true and authentic Middle Eastern nation that has earned the right to be here by virtue of our new-found bigotry.
It took me 9 months to make aliyah in Israel because I had letters and proof of Jewishness from a Conservative communitiy and not Orthodox. When it was finally approved I was informed I would have trouble marrying and be buried in Israel like other Jewish (Israeli-born) citizens. Why are we treated like second class citizens when we give so much to it, and it exists because of people like us? Unbelievable.
I came from an orthodox synagogue, I had letters from the local rabbi, a Chabad rabbi who I had helped out with alot of stuff in the past, parents ketuba, showing they were both jewish and all kinds of other stuff took me the better part of a year and they were even asking for some stupid things like copies of my passports going back till when I was a child ( who keeps passports that long ). There was so much rubbish they wanted. When I finally got to Israel i stayed in an absorbtion centre for 6 months where I had an American room mate. He had never been to Israel in his life, he had no proof at all he was jewish, he didn't go to a synagogue back in the US so he never even had anybody there to vouch for him. He was coming to Israel because he lost all his money so his thinking was the state gives all kinds of benefits to olim so start over in Israel. He didn't have any evidence of being jewish but his grandmother had a traiditonal jewish name and they said it would be acceptable proof if he took a photograph of himself standing next to her grave. There doesn't seem to be a 1 size fits all level of proof that will be accepted. For some people they can have little or no proof they are jewish and zip through for others they can have a more proof than they could possibly be practically asked to offer and its a slow long drawn out process with problems at every turn. Nobodies fault the system just doesn't work the way its supposed to in theory.
This is not about this woman its about the fact there is a process for alliyah and you must meet certain requirements. Lets say you want a job you know everything there is no know about that vocation. You don't though you never took any exams what you know is from experience not because you have formal qualifications and so the employer is going to say you don't meet the requirements so we are not going to employ you. In life there is rules for everything alliyah especially considering that after cash handouts and all the tax breaks the government gives each olleh around $20,000. To be fair to the woman the system which asks for proof of jewishness is a mess thats not intentional its just the system doesn't seem to always ask for the same thing its just a mess and needs sorting out. When I wanted to make alliyah the Jewish Agency wanted just about every document you could want including passports going back to when I was about 10 & how many people hold onto passports that long the process was a nightmare. I was in an absorbtion centre for the first 6 months where I shared a room with an American. He had never even visited Israel in his life and he was there because he had lost everything back in the US and he knew that olim get lots of financial benefits so his thinking was start over in Israel with help from the state. As I say he had no proof of being jewish but what they ended up accepting was a photograph of him standing next to his grandmothers grave ( she had a jewish name ) so the man took a picture standing next to a grave which could have belonged to anybody and he was trusted & they wanted all kinds of information from me. When I brought over a shipment to collect it from customs they wanted some rediculous things I couldn't practically provide if they were going to let me take the thing. If there is one thing you can be sure of in Israel is beurcracy and sometimes the system doesn't work as well as its supposed to. With this woman the question is under what visa she came. Was she coming as an olleh in which case she has to be jewish or was she coming on some kind of tempory resident visa which allows her to live and work in Israel but she does not get citizenship. If she came as an olleh mistake or not there are rules and she would have been considered to have broken those rules and she can't provide proof of jewishness
You only have to have one Jewish parent, mother or father to make aliyah. If you don't have a Jewish parent then you must have at least one grandparent (paternal or maternal) to make aliyah.
I'm Jewish, grand son of Shoah survivors and this country never recognized my Jewishness and questioned it because my father is not Jewish !!! It's been 3 years that I am residing here as a temporary resident but finally I am proud of it ! I don't need anybody to question my Jewishness and I don't need to be Israeli to feel more Jewish. All this is a non sense, allyah itself is a non sense. Nobody has the right to question one's Jewishness. Israel , it's time to wake up and live in a real democracy
This just happens to be a woman who is motivated, connected, and articulate. The others who suffer this just leave more quietly. One unspoken reason for the charedi conduct is to preserve what they imagine is the "purity" of their own communities. However, they can achieve this by maintaining an independent sefer yukhsin. Should any descendant of Ms. Rubin, for example, wish to marry into a Chasidic sect, at that point the hassles can begin, and be resolved. By research, or by gerus. Till then, such narrowly-educated, ghetto-favoring rabbis shouldn't have such sensitive jobs. Something else, where they can't do such harm. They're not trained to do much, but they're intelligent enough to do computer coding, say...
I see an ignorant person pimp the delusion that the American Revolution was 'Christian." Haym Solomon is a name not taught in America's Christian Academies, our 'religious right' schools. He was a member of the NY Sons of Liberty, and an associate of Robert Morris (look him up). When Washington needed the funds to finish off the Brits at Yorktown, he said 'Send for Haym Solomon." You got it. Could the French have managed to pay their troops in America without Haym Solomon? Probably. Could the Revolution survived without his ability at selling bonds? Who knows?
The Herzliya Rabbinate in observing "strict standards of Moses and Israel" should then be aware that maternal Jewish lineage was only introduced as a response to Roman occupation see "The History of God" by Karen Armstrong and other historical texts.
If it is established that Hilary's mother is Jewish, Hilary is Jewish. Jewish women cannot give birth to Gentile children, Gentile mothers cannot give birth to Jewish kids.
This is definitely confusing for someone who is brought up Jewish in the US and taught to love Israel and that you have the open choice to come to Israel and become a citizen there. No one ever talked about having documentation going back 4 generations, which I do not have.
I too am one of those people, Jewish on all sides for generations, who chose not be be married in Israel due to Orthodox zealotry. My conservative Rabbi in the US married me to my Israeli husband over 45 years ago. How sad that some things never change.
Obviously we are taken over by a bunch of relegious fanatics calling themeselves jews and strangling our life in this country. But until the silent majority rebels, why would they change their ways? Something dramatic has to happen, some fresh ideas are needed. Maybe we should all boycott 'official jews', or I dont know what, somebody smart should propose a way to shake this situation. Until we rebel, its our fault, we deserve this fate. This mafia would not survive a single day in a truly democratic country.
The Rabbinate is using taxpayers money to provide a service. In this case the service boils down to determining whether one is Jewish enough to qualify to have a Jewish life cycle event officially recognized. So I'm wondering two things; 1) Do native born Israelis also have to provide four generations worth of ketubot and birth and death certificates? Because a lot of native born Israelis will also have trouble with that once they hit the Holocaust generation in the family and 2) Are all these ketubot, birth and death certificates required in order to have a Jewish burial? Because either you're a Jew or you are not and if this is the standard of proof for proving one is a Jew in order to be married then it seems reasonable that the same standard should apply to keeping Jewish graveyards pure as the one being used to keep Jewish families pure Now if the answer to either of these is NO (.i.e if you are native born then you don't need four generations of multiple documents or if when you are buried you also dont), then why is tax money being used to provide a service which discriminates against some citizens (i.e olim getting married vs natives getting married, and olim getting married vs anyone getting buried.) As long as the law provides that the Rabinnate has the power to determine who is Jewish enough to qualify for officially recognized life cycle events, then it ought to be forced to apply the same standard to all citizens in all cases
Unfortunately Israelis do not understand the concept of a class action suit and how powerful that is. No one wants to deal with it. Who the heck has 4 generations birth certificates and ketubot??? Are they insane? I want them to show us theirs! What if u come from the Soviet Union? What ketubot?
As a Jew I am totally disgusted with this. First, did we not lose enogh Jewish lives in the Holocaust that we have o chase away more Jewsl As for documents proving 4 genertions of jewish mothers, how many of these hypocrytes have such documents, especially since things destroyed by the Holocaus. I purchased an item from a department store the was Garaunteed for Life. When i broke down I took it back and was asked for he original receipt. I did't have it but I did say It was bought on your credit card, would you not have a copy. The Answer::::We don't keep records that long or we would need a whole warehouse just for a paper trail....On THAT, I rest my case. GET RID of this organization or they will chase us away from Judaism.
Those that empower themselves to say who is a Jew will also have to pass before G-d on Judgement Day. A Jew knows in his/her heart and soul and does not need others to declare them a Jew!
This is embarrassing. These absurd tests to ascertain one's Jewish identity (as well as the unnecessary hoops that converts have to jump through) is NOT halacha, NOT zionism, and NOT smart politics. If the haredi stranglehold on religious matters in Israel does not end, Israel will cease to be a the national home for ALL Jews.
I dont know whether or not she is Jewish , but the fact that her great great uncle was a hard core zionist hardly proves her point at all. Being Jewish means converted by a religious rabbi in accordance with Jewish law. That is how we have survived all these years knowing who is a Jew and who is not. She should not be insulted but rather elated that we as Jews are so meticulous when it comes to our heritage!
Her Uncle's Zionism created the state of Israel, and now she can't get married there??? Oh I'm sure she's completely "elated" by this injustice!
Why get married through the Rabbinate in the first place? Just draw up a prenup through a lawyer and throw a party for your family and friends. You can have a chupah and all the rest of the traditions. Nothing in the Halacha requires a rabbi, just 2 witnesses and a ring. Open your eyes people, there are alternatives to the mullahs of religious fascism at the Rabbinate. Ignore this irrelevant institution and in one generation we'll have civil marriage for those who want it.
This whole article is an overblown stretch of truth . Only one side interviewed , no one , especially Haaretz is interested to learn the full story , it might interfere with their prejudged opinions .
I am a child of survivors , and have many friends in israel , not a single one ever had any such problems with the Rabbinate . No one had to prove four generation lineage , or show unavailable documents . There is more to this very shallow story that suits Haaretz 's agenda so well .
Israel, Do you want to keep existing as a country or destroy yourself, people don't always keep everything. the Israeli Rabbinate needs to wake-up and get real.
Are such a sham and an embarrassment to true Israel. Thanks for highlighting the hypocrisy of the Aliyah selection committee. Now that I think about it, their skills could have been used in the US election 2 years ago to help prove Obama's non citizenship.
I would have no problem because I learnt in a Haredi American yeshivah and was married by a well-known Haredi Rav, BUT if I had to produce four generations of Kesuvahs and birth and death certificates, at least two generations from pre-war Lithuania, I doubt that I could do so. Pre-Holocaust kesuvahs went up in smoke like their owners. There must be a better methods. Would any Poskim be prepared to suggest DNA as an alternative test?
can Israel practice what it preaches??? it is not the blood that makes one a devout Jew ... i heard many in Israel are atheists ...what a contradiction
1) Most Jews are secular. They can prove their 'identity' but no-one forces them how observant ritually they need to be.If a Jew with papers were to eat bacon,no-one can take away his identity or her identity.Any person who is Jewish and who wishes to 'marry a non Jew' does not or should not have to make a choice between 'winning and losing'If the partner wishes to convert,it is for a twofold reason.Firstly it is because they wish to have a Jewish identity with other Jews of similar persuasion, socially and culturally(not just observance-wise) Secondly and perhaps most importantly, they wish their children to be able to marry another Jew without all the obstructions. If this does not function. 1) their child cannot marry the 'love of their life'.....unless they forsake ALL Jewishness. The result is a lot of unhappy children through no fault of their own,and an exponential loss of the Jewish people. Exclusivity in today's world, may be desirable for the Haredi,or for those Rabbis who 'live off' the proceeds of conversion, but to society as a whole, they are LOSING Jews at a great rate of knots. If it were my children,my first responsibility is that they are happy WHOEVER THEY MARRY.But if they WISH to marry whoever they choose and STILL be part of Jewish life, religious or otherwise,EVERY HELP SHOULD BE GIVEN. We are destroying ourselves through these Rabbis who live in enclosed societies, out of touch with the rest of the world. They are entitled to live lives asa THEY wish , but not CONTROL everyone else. In USA with so much 'non ultra orthodox' choice of whom to marry, it may be not so bad, but in the UK and in Israel, they aree creating a lot of unhappiness.
In the case where proofs are unavailable, certain arrangements/exceptions may be. Besides whats the point of using, inciting though partially correct, expressions such as "still Jewish enough to be hated by most of the world"! Anyone who may hates you because of your ethnicity/religion is an ignorant. Even i "the enemy" dont!
Israel's worst enemies are within
An honest question. How do non-Jews, such as Christians, Muslims, Hindu's, etc, get married in Israel?
Marriages of people of other religions to members of their own religious group are recognized in Israel, as least for Muslims and Druze and members of recognized Christian churches. If the want to marry someone of another religion, however, they face the same barriers as Jews who wish to do likewise. The only way to avoid violation of the basic human right to marry without regard to religious differences is to do away with this vestige of the Ottoman Millet system and allow civil marriage for all.
To a democrat, who believes in the seperation of religion and state, the Israeli laws are absurd. What if you would have to be a catholic to be able to marry in Italy? Wouldn't this lead to an outcry, because it would be ant-semitic? Israel still has a long way to go before it can call itself a real democracy.
Seems to me modern day Jews are only ones that take wives that are Jewish or is my Torah different then everyone elses? So the fact is this should not really matter. I can prvoide dozens of examples from the Tanach if you all wish.
Clearly the rabbi who would not marry her is NOT JEWISH and should be thrown out of Israel. Spit on the Rabbi.
I'm an orthodox Jew (knitted kippa family) and I am sickened by this. The power of the insane ultra haredi rabbinate must be stopped at once. They are killing Israel. Where is the govt of the country? Stop this madness now!
We need to find people who will organize a civil rights march like that of Martin Luther King - the Israeli public needs to wake up to the fact that this is a CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE not a religious one. We need to disband the Rabbinate from ANY political power and allow civil weddings in Israel.
5 And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD,saying,The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well...6 This is the thing that the LORD doth command........: Let them marry to whome thay think best ;only to the tribe of their father shall thay marry. 7 So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel be removed from tribe to tribe:for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inharitance of the tribe of his father....according to the word of the LORD
How many of the Jews exterminated by Hitler and his Nazis would have failed to satisfy the 'test' that Israel has chosen to establish as whom is a Jew? Hitler wanted to define a 'Jew' with as broad a net as possible so that no gene could be left after his genocide. Israel has chosen to define 'Jew' so closely that many of those Hitler murdered would not be considered a Jew by Israel today. Whom is guilty of the worst crime? Define 'Crime'? As one who leaves no gene existing? Or someone who refuses to recognize any affiliation except the most extreme?
I would seen that the rabbinate's suspicions are solid.
Hillary, my Israeli wife and I married in a civil marrige in California. We have spent our entire lives ignoring these idiots at the Rabanut and they have never been able to affect a single thing in our lives. You should do the same, and for the sport of it, do everything possible over the years to undermine any authority that they have; eventually change will come. These people are sick racist bastards and you should not let them get the best of you, or allow them to ruin your love of Israel.
This debate is getting tiresome.
Although I am Halachically Jewish, this kind of mishegoss is one reason why I decided years ago to convert to the Catholic Faith. Good riddance.
The rabbinical court is a greater threat to Israel than Hamas. Asking for certificates from a woman whose grandparents were in the Shoah is a disgrace. As the son of Holocaust survivors, and a person who has bought $300,000 in Israel bonds over the years, I find this story disgusting. Israel is already isolated from the world--its now endeavors to isolate itself from diaspora Jewry.
The rest of the world does not hate you because you are Jewish. Grow up. Jews in the United States have more personal freedom, more freedom to be Jewish in any way they please, more personal safety and security, and face less discrimination than they do in Israel, (in fact, almost none).
Time for rabbis to stop this evil pursuit. They operate as if Ruth didn´t exist. In her time there were no ketuvots nor a license to be an Israelite. It was enough to declare that you loved the God of Israel. Furthermore, there was no such thing as a "conversion" until rabbis invented it.
Some members of the Rabbinate there could do with sensitivity training
Too many Jews in israel? This may fix the problem. More Shariah please.
This is a problem that a relative of mine in the UK faced when she married a man who had been in hiding in Holland during the second world war. All ketubot had been destroyed. Consequently they got married through Reform and all her children have married out. I am Orthodox but the Rabbonim need to take a different approach of walking the line between heaven and earth, being faithful to Hashem whilst enabling people to live by the commandments not be destroyed by them. That is the mark of a good rav. Unfortunately the rabbis in teh rabbinut are not very skilled in this nor do they have any people skills. They turn people off Orthodox Judaism and this in my opinion makes them heretics.
I had to go through the same process at the Jerusalem rabbinate. Despite the fact that all my grand parents have lived in the holocaust, I have presented ketubah and other certificates. I have brought a testimony from an old lady who knew my grandmother from the getho. This annoying process took me 1 week, but to tell the truth the Jewish Agency's aliya availability exam took 4 month... I think this couple simply does not have the nerves to work themselves through this process. If they are Jews (halachically) then they will get what they want simply they shouldn't give up!
I know her from back home.
I got married in Israel 30 years ago, in Jerusalem no less. Having the same background (my parents were both Shoah survivors), letters testifying to my "Jewishness" was sufficient. How is this acceptable, and why did things change? It's so hard to get children to marry into the faith. Why would the process me this infuriating in our own home?
Talk about pretentious! The "holier than thou" attitude of the orthodox divides Judaism better than any attack by it's enemies. Israel's and Judaism's enemies are laughing and cheering every time they read about this and other similar battles. The saddest part of this ongoing issue within Judaism, is that with Israel becoming the Jewish version of a "stan" in the Moslem world, and its "reason d'etre" - i.e. to protect and allow Jews from anywhere in the world to seek refuge, is gravely diminished. Why aren't all of the "non-observant" Israelis, who make up of the majority of Jewish Israelis, protesting in the streets? They pay their hard earned money to support an elitist bunch of non-army serving, money grabbing, ecnomic debilitating (how many Jews have left the state or are unwilling to emigrate because of this farce), pompous Rabbis. I guess, as with everyone including the orthodox, money talks. Since those "non-observant" Jews inside Israel appear to be unwilling or incapable of sending the message, it is incumbent on the majority of Jews in the galut to take up the cause. I would sooner, as a non-orthodox Jew, support my local B'nai Brith or Jewish Federation before supporting the state of Israelistan.
as to why they refused her. It would seem that if she were truly Jewish, some records of her grandparents being gassed in concentration camps would be available to her. Furthermore, her refusal to cooperate seems to show that something is amiss. The bureaucracy in Israel can be frustrating, but if one works with the system it is possible to find a resolution. The burden of proof lay on Hilary Rubin's shoulders.... If she cant prove it, I personally would argue that she isnt a Jew.
G-d will one day return us all to the promised land but until then I will stay in the dispora happy and content until that day comes.
What nonsense is this ? If she wants to marry here.let her. Of course she is a fine Jewess. Only on the basis of her beauty, she's welcome to come, live,& marry in Israel. Are some Rabbi's daughters Jealous ?
Fifty years ago all that was required was to produce a given number or witnesses to attest to one's being Jewish and single. All ours gave credible declarations, except for one naive fellow who declared: "I feel it...". He was sent home, and had to be replaced...
it was widely presumed to have been a vieled critique of Communism. Obviously not, it was all about Israel, where it now appears that some Jews are more equal than others.
hahaha extreme racism ur not jewish enough lol
As an olah chadasha, I also don't have these kind of documents, yet I still managed to have a Jewish wedding in Israel. I had a letter from a chabad rabbi as well, and he based it on the plot numbers of the Jewish cemetery of my maternal grandparents and the birth certificates of my mom and myself that connected me to them, since my mom lost her ketuba. Then, the rabbi sent me to the official rabbinut rabbi of Washington, DC, who accepted the word of this chabad rabbi because he was a friend of his. Then the Netanya Rabbinut was forced to accept it. Try doing it from the US! Trust me, it is easier that way! Best of luck fixing this.
It seems to me that there are in addition to Ahmadinejad people who know nothing about WWI, WWII and holocaust and unfortunately that is Chief Rabbinate in Israel. In their thinking obviously no jews were killed in the holocaust and jewish families lived happily keeping all their documents in good safe. They have not four generations proof of anybody killed in the holocaust that he/she was a jew How can they determine that anybody who was killed was a jew. Based on their requiments of proof no jew was killed. During all the calamities in Europe only jews had had all their documents nicely stored in safe place and easily obtainable to Rabbies who up today have not been able to publish what is required. It sounds to me like a fight against HaShem who is now causing all the jews from all the countries to move to Israel, but with man made rules Rabbies fight against it. That the rules are made by man can be seen from number of different denominations of Rabbies all teaching differently the one and only truth.
Didn't Moses marry a gentile?
That is all they want. That is how you make something Kosher in Israel.
And thank you Shas and yehadut hatorah!
Every time I read articles like this, I realize just how wise the founding fathers of the United States were when they insisted on the separation of church and state. It's too bad Israel's founding fathers weren't so wise; we're now paying the price for their lack of foresight.
Israel has 100,000 illegal Arabs and thousands of African Moslems coming into Israel and the Jewish girl is forced to leave the country to get married. Something is very wrong here.
For anyone who thinks blackmail is a new tactic of the Orthodox Rabbinate, my story from 28 years ago proves them wrong. My then fiancée, an Israeli Jewess born in Baghdad who emigrated at age 1 and I (who immigrated in 1969 at age 19) were the victims of attempted blackmail by a Rabbinate employee. My lady wanted a particular catering service (Kasher, authorized by the Rabbinate), so we found a hall without catering linked as a package deal (the Ramat-Gan WIZO club, if anyone wants to know). The Rabbinate official in charge of our file refused to approve it unless we convinced WIZO to sign an exclusive contract for that hall with a caterer that he recommended. My fiancée and I refused and took this all the way up the Rabbinate's chain of command. It was not until we sent an official, registered letter of protest to the Minister of Religious Affairs, with copies other government officials, including the PM of the time, Menachem Begin and to all the newspapers, that the Rabbinate's approval was given. It turned out that the original blackmailer was trying to get a permanent catering deal for a relative, but that didn't stop the rest of the Rabbinate in Ramat-Gan from supporting him until the government got involved at the ministerial level. I have been a strong supporter of the civil marriage option ever since. With the option of civil marriage, the Rabbinate will lose its power to blackmail seculars or any other non-Orthodox into any outrageous actions they choose. I have no doubt that if an Orthodox couple had come to the Ramat-Gan Rabbinate with the same request we did, it would have been granted without delay. The system is rotten and needs change. Civil marriage NOW!
So...reading the comments am I led to believe that a civil marriage cannot occur in Israel?...how about a marriage between a jew and an Athiest..?? If Israel cannot recognise basic humanity of the 21st century but has its head stuck so far up its tuchers then most of the diaspora are right in not wanting attachment. A great percentage og my jewish peers have married out and are not sorry...their marriage is between themselves and not some Israeli beaurocrat.
First of all anyone wanting to mary, divorce, etc, in Israel MUST do what needs to be done. And that is to go to some top Rabbi in America, not in Israel, (I went to Lubavitcher in NJ) and he KNOWS what is required in Israel and provides it and that's all ! Everybody knows what happened in the Holocaust, etc, but Israeli rabbis DON'T First of all anyone wanting to mary, divorce, etc, in Israel MUST do what needs to be done. And that is to go to some top Rabbi in America, not in Israel, (I went to Lubavitcher in NJ) and he KNOWS what is required in Israel and provides it and that's all ! Everybody knows what happened in the Holocaust, etc, but Israeli rabbis DON'T know somebody from abroad. They need SOME CONFIRMATION from somebody they TRUST. So, this way, you get married, and YOUR CHILDREN WILL GET MARRIED ! Everybody is happy. I was, and I am. Now what did this girl do? Brag she is the niece of Sokolow? To Haredis???....... Alternatively change the law.........
Anyone wanting to mary, divorce, etc, in Israel MUST do what what is required by the Haredim. There is NO OTHER WAY. But for an American the solution is simple: go to a top haredi rabbi in America, not in Israel, (I went to Lubavitcher in NJ) and he KNOWS what is required in Israel by the haredi law, and provides it and that's all ! Once in israel you must get used to the idea that Israeli rabbis DON'T know people from abroad. They need SOME CONFIRMATION from somebody they TRUST. And you better believe they trust Lubavitcher! So, this way, you get married, and YOUR CHILDREN WILL GET MARRIED ! Everybody will be happy.
All Hilary had to do is go to the Beth Din, one visit and Hilary snubbed them. Hello.........!!! That in itself rings a red light. I would also like to point out that although there are no death certificates of those who perished in the Nazi Death Camps, the Germans carefully and deligently documented EVERY person that went in them which has now been computerized and available to the public. If Hilary's mother cares about her daughter's future then the mother could always invest in a trip to Israel and visit the Beth Din in Jerusalem herself. If the mother can't afford it then the Beth Din can set up an appt with their selected Beth Din in the USA. Problem solved. So how about it Hilary????
Why are they allowed to do this?? Because we let them!! Is it not time to oust this disgusting framework & fix this?? Either that or just pay them more... always seems to work!!
Time for a new Jesus Christ to head revolution.
doomed to corruption and worse. end it today.
While Christianity and Islam are spreading like wildfire throughout the world, we're turning our own Jews away..... rediculous!!!
If you pay them under the table they will do it. Sorry you had to go through this primitive way of doing things. Enjoy your wedding abroad. Your better off not being married by a Rabbi here. A load of men who creat rules that are certainly not given by the Alimighty.
These men of righteousness, the ones so concerns with "the law of Moses and Israel" would kosherise Ms. Rubin in an instatn and dance at her wedding if they were schmered for a quarter million shekels. That's their real "law".
The Rabbis who made this law of having to produce the 4 ketubat, 4 marriage and birth and death certificates of grandparents of Jewish ancestors should themselves first of all be called to bring forth their own proof of Jewishness. I bet most of them do not have the relevent documents.
Why would anyone who was not Jewish, want to marry in Israel? I suggest Las Vegas. You will not need to prove your Jewish to three generations back and you will be appreciated for the money you spend in Las Vegas. Israel is just digging a deeper whole within the Jewish community throughout the world. Israel will pay a big price for this in the near future.
going back 4 generations.. did this idiots think that the olim from the Arab lands had birth certificates, many do not know the exact date of their birth, or the European Jews that survived the holocaust were preoccupied with birth certificates. For that matter 100 years ago many people had no birth certificates. What will they come up next? When will the majority of Israelis will have enough of the ultra orthodox and the left?
Lack of civil marriage in Israel is a disgrace. To be honest, I don't care who rabbinate considers Jewish. We both had all the right papers, I just couldn't stand dealing with these parasites. Cyprus was wonderful, but I would still prefer to be able to get married in my own country.
thank g-d, I will not need to show it to the Rebe should I decide to marry again. Israel is really verrry strange. Why can it and its institutions not behave like a normal country?
you guys claiming it's just contrived haven't got much of a case. there seem to be enough reports of similar stories, backed by religious figures such as rabbi melchior (former cabinet minister) in haaretz yesterday /the day before. furthermore, why would hillary rubin, herself an observant jew, agree to this exposure if it wasn't verifiable & true?
"furthermore, why would hillary rubin, herself an observant jew, agree to this exposure if it wasn't verifiable & true? " Sorry, ivo, but Haaretz has a LONG history of publishing reports that are not true or based off of fiction. I even took one Haaretz author on asking her to verify her 'facts' against the religious, and not only was she unable to, the 'proof' she had went against her entire article.
Jews are very happy wherever they are - No need to go to Israel and go through all this torture - Who are they anyway to question the jewishness of anybody for that matter - who gave them the right to decide that they are more jewish than me.
Right point, Sam. Only after making Aliyah we find out that Israel (I mean the orthodox fellows) is not so open and not so interested in insert us, jews who were born abroad, in the society!!! we count in a minian..but many of us are not able to marry in the land. So we ask: is it not time to come back to our original countries, where we take part in our communities...and have our rights respected?
unbelievable, Israel where are you going
We are jews when the Jewish Agency and Nefesh b´Nefesh send us to Israel after such a long way proving our jewishness...no matter if we are orthodox or not...but it seems our "status quo" dispears when the point is marriage or many other topics where the rabinate has the final word!!! Someone can tell me how many of us leave the land after such treatment?
Rest Assured if Ms. Rubin were to offere these rabbis a quarter a million shekels, she would be kosherised instantly. That's bottom line.- the bottom line.
Better marry in Cyprus than in this crazy country. This will avoid any "aguna" problems in case of a divorce. Of course, this should not happen - but then, one never knows.....
Don't worry Hillary, Kafka (out of whose books these disgusting bureaucrats seem to have come out from) wouldn't have passed their standards either. But we'd much rather belong to his tribe than theirs.
- not in today's israel anyway. he might've tried to incorporate this crazy story in one of his books, though. (btw, i live in prague, kafka's city :)
I got married in Israel 24 years ago. It was a nightmare then it seems like a nightmare now It creates dishonesty I am orthodox and it was bad
This is precisely the kind of nightmare scenario that will befall thousands of descendants of Shoah survivors should they decide to live and marry in Israel. Four generations worth of documents? Are they serious? How many of us have family pictures, heirlooms, books from our European survivor parents? They were lucky to get out alive, and if they returned to their homes, they often found all their possessions were stolen by their neighbors, not to be returned. I have ofen said the same thing: My parents siblings and parents were Jewish enough to be killed by Hitler, but in Israel I wouldn't be Jewish enough for the Rabbinate. What a tragic state of affairs. This just shows how ludicrous that institution has become. They are using halacha like a battering ram and not the way it's supposed to be used. The government of Israel should wipe the slate clean with this bunch of ridiculous, out-of-touch rabbis and find humane, sympathetic rabbis (like the ones from Tzohar) to replace them. Which brings me to question: Why didn't Rubin and her fiance get married by a Tzohar rabbi?
Let's see if they can provide 4 generations documents.
The Tzohar Rabbis indeed can assist her in finding her way though the system and proving her Jewishness: http://www.tzohar.org.il/nisuim_show.asp?id=6183
The Law of Return sounds great in theory -- allow all Jews a safe haven! -- but it's deeply problematic in practice because it gives those who decide too much power without a lot of accountability. It's a form of putting a stumbling block in front of the blind, actually, akin to leaving cash unattended in plain sight. If they say no, you're not Jewish, they or their cronies stand to gain quite a not of cash from your conversion. If they say yes however, they gain nothing. It would take an extraordinary individual to always remain absolutely upright in making this decision, especially when being strict has the appearance of piety. And the dual nature of Jewish identity makes it easy to object: converted? It wasn't strict enough. Not converted? Your mother wasn't Jewish. Mother is Jewish? Your grandmother wasn't. Grandmother was Jewish? Your great-grandmother then. All Jewish? Well then this spelling error in the Ketuba invalidates it.
It took me a year to convince the Rabbinute that I was Jewish enough for aliyah, although I had all the necessary ketubot etc. After seven years of living with this nonsense, I sadly went back to America. Jews, Israelis, wake up! Fanaticism left and right has turned the promised land into a dystopia!
what would our grandparents who perished in the holocaust for being Jewish feel towards this state of Israel where the same process is repeating itself ? Just that here we have a choice .......... discrimination against Palestinians, against Israeli Arabs, against Beduins, against Third Nationality foreign Workers, agains African Refugees? against gays? newest against reform, conservative Jews who cannot shwo documents proving 4 generations of "pure blood". SHAME ON US!! I hope the Israeli government wakes up before it is too late. Soon it is gong to be a totally fundamentalist Jewish State, huge steps are leading to it.
The Israeli rabbinate give everyone a bad name. How silly.
Religious vs Zionist. Read how the protagonists are being introduced... Good vs Evil and it all serves one purpose. Advance a political agenda at a story that would not make the news anywhere in the world. All the posts are bigoted and Haaretz is an accomplice. Censor do you agree?
your comment was not censored. I think it is necessary even to listen to the nuts in this world.
How is this story "contrived"?? The facts are the facts. This story would not make news elsewhere in the world? Of course it would not. There is nowhere else in the world where the rabbinate would get away with this.
i was raised and still am orthdox i would have a hard time proofing my lineage 4 generations back see my grandparents left their katobah at aushwitz
... in my country. But not in Israel? It seems something doesn't quite add up here....
Reminiscent of the Nazi requirement of providing an "Aryer Nachweiss" proving pure Aryan ancestry for at least 3 generations !
The Nazis took this from the Jesuits who required proof of a certain number of generations of pure Christian blood. In ancient regime France you needed four generations of noblesse to be really counted as noble and not a parvenue.
They know she will not be able to provide the documentation they asked for; they would then require her to go through a 'conversion'. This is where the money is made. Some in the rabbinate in Israel extort money from those wanting to convert. This was the case with my sister-in-law who moved to Israel and wanted an orthodox conversion. Those she met with first demanded a great deal of personal financial information (about her and her family) and then said she would have to pay them $10,000 for her conversion. She ended up coming back to the U.S. for her orthodox conversion.
what Jesus Christ was speaking about when He chastised the Parushim in the New Testament as hypocrites!
It's time the rabbis involved inn this blatant discrimination against Jews woke up to the impression this makes on non-Jews. I'm a non-Jewish pro-Israel (and pro-Jewish) activist. This horrifies me, because it makes my hasbara work much harder. How can I proclaim Israel as a bastion for human rights and religious freedom if Israel permits such obscene treatment of sincere Jews and Holocaust survivors' children? That anyone should have shrugged his shoulders and said that the loss of ketubot in the Holocaust is none of his business sends a shudder through me. Anti-Israel activists who learn of this will, rightly, say that, if Israeli rabbis can treat Jews this shabbily, what sort of discrimination do they inflict on Arabs. What can I say? I want Israel to survive, but I fear it will not so long as these pains in the neck interfere in basic civil matters. How many people making aliyah have to present 4 generations' worth of ketubot?
Doug, this is not a Reform/Conservative/Orthodox thing. If Hillary Rubin were Orthodox, she still could not provide the ketubah of a grandparent who was murdered by the Nazis. Exactly, whom does it benefit to torture her this way?
I think this actually IS a denominational thing. Not everyone is treated equally by the Rabbanut bureaucracy. The decisions about marriage files are made by petty clerks, not experts in halacha. Often they make their decisions based on physical appearance. I am pretty sure that she would have had a much easier time had she shown up to the Rabbanut wearing a long skirt. If you look secular the petty clerks treat you differently. Few people can produce 4 generations of ketubot; but those who "look frum" are often given the benefit of the doubt.
where teh corrupt disrupt everyones lives to ensure no-one has eth time or patience to question their corruptness. after tehy rebuild the temple then maybe it'll be a rabinical court, until then its just a bunch of parasites living off our charity(which is stolen at source). if they can prove 4 generations of papers what are they doing here as tehy obviously were ok in their former homes, black hats should leave true Israeli alone or get jobs and shut up.
Moses married the daughter of a Midianite priest. King David's grandmother was a Moabite. The strict standards the Rabbis refer to were nothing to do with Moses. More like the standards that Ezra tried to impose on the population of Judah a thousand years after the supposed time of Moses. That this was never a so called "Law of Moses" can be demonstrated by the Torah's own recollection of King Solomon's 300 wives, most of whom were non Israelite. Did David and Solomon forget to read their 'Law of Moses'?!
Wow, I can't believe this chain of events. This is silly. You should come to the US to get married, and get an official conversion from any type of Rabbi here in the US. Problem solved, although Israel doesn't get the revenue from the taxes on the guests, and the Israel businesses lose out. Then go back to Israel to live, and change this silliness so the next person who is in a similar situation, and is clearly, and wants to be Jewish, doesn't have the same problems! Good Luck!
Here we go again! More middle-eastern theology stuck in the mid ages. When will they learn we live in the 21st century? When will they learn that abandoning Jews who are not orthodox is driving the secular away? When will they learn that they are one of the smallest populations of any religion and turning off the majority of us secular Jews is counter productive to the survival of Israel. If we continue down this road, Israel will become one huge slum as Jerusalem has already become. When will they learn that to be Godly is to be tolerant, nonjudgmental with a helping hand to all mankind. Though I don't follow all the orthodox rituals, I consider myself much more holy than these so-called "admirable" Rabbi's who condone violence, discrimination and have such closed minds that their opinion is the only opinion. Sure hope the majority can hold out before this neanderthal thinking puts Israel in the same oppressed league of other Arab states. The Jewish faith deserves better!
it is a get rich scheme for the religious whackjobs, who if asked probably couldn't provide four generations of documentation either. Well not real ones anyway, I suppose there will be a great market for forgeries coming soon to a place near you.
Israel cannot afford this kind of religious biggotry. The State should not be a religious dictatorship run by ultra fanatic schyzophrenic "rabbis"...They are repeating the outrages of the inquisition and the nazis, that also demanded 4 generations of "pure blood"
its time get this talibans send to iran or afganistan - rabinat distroing steat of israel
They are such a minority in the Diaspora as to be minimally reflective of Jewish life. Why are they calling the shots? What credibility do they have as representative of Judaism?
And yet my marriage was officiated by the chief Scribe of the Eda Haredit. When my grandchildren were born in Israel, my son had to provide much more documentation at the U.S. Consulate to prove that they were entitled to U.S. citizenship. So there is something missing from this "rabbinate horror" story.
to make the religious look bad...Get it?
this is precisely what goes on. To be in Israel, to marry in Israel ... one has to prove to the state that they are a Jew. Impossible standards like the ones in this story are not out of the ordinary.
I am frum and I know this situation to have happened to many times. Do you think all rabbis are perfect and know how to work within halacha perfectly? You are very naive. Have you even been to the rabbanut to get married? They are horrible to people who even have two generations of ketubot, they are bloody ignorant (didn't seem to have heard of the London Bais Din for crying out loud!!!) they are basically clerks and not huge halachic authorities used to dealing with difficult questions.
The Haredi rabbinate doesn't make its own Haredim people go through this hell!!! The rabbinat eis an institution of Haredi racism. I also went through the US citizenship process with my son, it is fully justified. The rabbis in the rabbinate know that they are destrotying Judaism, making young Jews hate their own religion and driving Israelis to marry abroad. They regret this, but the money and power is more important to them than Am Israel!!!!
This young lady knows that she is entitled to her day in court. Instead of fighting for her rights, she is ready to just give up and leave the country. The government of every country has bureaucracy, and citizens must deal with them. She is fortunate that she is entitled to present her case in a fair and impartial court and in a free and democratic society.
to make the religous look bad...
Religious edicts are not from the government. They are from a self appointed group of men wanting to maintain power.
Yes, the rabbinate contrived this to make themselves look stupid. And yes, they succeeded.
and let's be clear what the real issue is, (1)corruption and power, (2) religious vs democratic When any group or person wields such authority, esp. when it is a religious group, corruption ensues. (2) Israel cannot be a democratic and religious state- it's a contradiction in terms. This is one of the root problems for Israel. What is democratic about religious law determining who can marry and who is a Jew. Israel is similar to the US in terms of its "free and democratic society" (at least the US has a Constitution to fall back on): A great deal of the freedoms you hold will be determined by your finances and the color of your skin. That is why in these great "democratic" countries the poor fill the jails and the rich pay the lawyers and/or politicians to keep them out. Some people do not have the financial or emotional wherewithal to undergo a court battle to just secure basic human rights. More proof that we don't take care or respect those people, who most need help.
and was declared 'yehudia l'av nochri' and tol I can't marry a Levy or a Cohen. No halakhic basis for that. Just being nasty and abusing their power. she is right to not subject herself to humiliation. What if Misrad a pnim aske dyou to 'prove your gender' in a tribunal. You would ell them to shove off, and rightfully so
Before accusing a journalist and this woman of fabricating a story, why don't you go to check the story for yourself. Go to those rabbis and ask them if it's all true. If it turns out to be, will you be man enough to change your mind?
Did you notice that the rabbi in charge refused to give his name? This is all to typical, and not contrived at all.
This is another case of irrational stupidty by authorities in Israel. How insulting to deny this woman the option to marry in Israel. Who the heck has ketubot going back 4 generations? Never heard of anything so ridiculous - well except that Arab charged with rape by deception...that is even more ridiculous. What is wrong with Israel these days? {shudder}
Warren #74 the fact that you and others are making excuses for this crime is terrible. How can a country who says it's a victim of religious prejudice re-enact this self-same prejudice against its own kind? This isn't only about religious practice. This is about a group of morally derelict so-called "religious people" holding the whole of the Jewish people to ransom. Once more we in the Diaspora will pay dearly for the Jewish elitism/racism that allows this to happen, and whenever we have the courage to disown it, and these people - we are called "self-haters" by those whose only interest is in enabling this power. To what level must we be shamed in the eyes of the world until we do Teshuva and become the example to people G-d intended us to be?
Ella, instead of yet another anti-Orthodox rant, why haven't you examined the points I made? Do you really think Hillary would have had to go back more than one generation if her mother could prove her Jewishness? Has she, for instance, been to see Rabbi Seth Farber of the Itim organisation which has a lot of success with combatting the rabbinate's obstructions? Or is she also more interested in promoting anti-Orthodox sentiments than getting married in Israel? I suspect her grandfather would have perservered.
this is a wake up regarding the bankruptcy of spiritual and ethical Jewish traditional religion. North American Jews have long turned a blind eye to the machinations of the Orthodox authorities in Israel. The belief that Israel is a "Jewish" democracy is dubious at best. It is time that non traditional Jews in Israel and the world at-large protested to the Israeli government
if the people here so rightly outraged by this narrow-minded tribalism feel much, if any, outrage when this question of "not being jewish" has an impact on non-jews in israel (or elsewhere)?
To "Frank" Ms Rubin's life and identity is at stake. Don't tell her to "relax", and definitely don't refer to her insultingly as "girl". This issue of "verification" of one's lineage is not from the Talmud, or the Shulchan Arech; it is not "by the book". The fact is, 99.9% of Jews could never provide definitive proof of a 'pure' Jewish lineage (including the Rabbis in question). A Jew, born to Jewish parents, who observes Shabbat and Kashruth, has to consider conversion simply as a means of getting her papers in order. That speaks for itself - something is very wrong.
true he's an interested party-budget wise.but he is hardly the main culprit.his monopoly was decreed by israel some 60 years ago.the solution is plain and simple-a parallel civil juristic system, and choice.but, many a time in history, the plain and simple is disregarded, for considerations we can only vaguely guess at.
It's all about control , stupid ,...
The religious have done nothing wrong. They have kept Jewish Law for 3500 years. The reform and conservative movement came along and changed the rules of the game. They have messed up the whole lineage. They have made the unkosher now kosher and the impure, pure so the religious have no recourse but to make sure the lineage is straight and not crooked. Unfortunately the reform and conservative leadership have misled millions of jews and the results of their actions are now being felt. The Knesset from thebeginning, agreed that the religious can run the marriage and divorce here. You want real weddings or Las vegas style? The only ones to blame are the leaders who have led the masses astray. The religious are trying to make sure their is a Jewish People in 30 years whereas the Reform and conservative movement are trying to erase us and make a cultural Israeli. They decimated the American Scene and now they want to try to do it to the Jews living here. Sorry, It wont happen here. Move to Uganda and make a Reform/conservative state there. Oh, I forgot; the conservative meovement doesnt accept reform conversions. How unpluralistic of them!
Doug, many observant Orthodox Jews are rejected by Israel as not being, "Jewish enough." They cannot have a Jewish marriage in Israel. They cannot be burried in a Jewish cemetary in Israel. To seek four (4) generations of proof of Jewishness which has nothing to do with anything, is a Shonda because so many of ours were killed in the Hollocaust.
As a religious conservative Jew I am happy to tell you that neither Conservative nor Reform is 'Judaism Light' and your ignorance is apalling. I rather stay outside of Israel than being discriminated for my Jewishness in the Jewish State. Shameful and sad! How could it have gone so wrong!!
I'm sorry that anyone has such an unbending view of the world. You have the arrogance to expel other Jews from your cosy world, and the effrontery to insist that only one kind of Jew may live in the Jewish state. Inflexibility is destroying Islam, and if people like you have your way, you'll destroy Judaism. If you think this way about Jews, I hate to think how you'll think of me, a goy.
The position of the Conservative movement --if I'm correct-- is to accept Reform (or any other) conversions provided they meet certain halakhic requirements. What is important is the fulfillment of those requirements, not who administered the conversion.
Never in the Bible the motherusedto give the child the religion. So how do you talk about 3500 years of tradition? Mother´s line as a rule came out with the pogroms and desire to keep fatherless children under the jewish tradition. David, Solomon Moses (Ziporah was a Rasta) andall the rest married non jewish women and their sonsand daughters were jewish, withut being mentoned the word "convertion" in the Bible.
I never heard of this happening or read any articles about it.
Please. My Ignorance or the reform/conservative snow job. How many reform or conservative keep kosher. I mean real kosher, not fish in a treif restaurant? How many just drive to shul on shabbos? What a joke. Probably less than a percent and that is being generous. No one is saying that anyone should be discriminated against. We are jsut saying that the law of the land needs to be the torah and not some made up religion.
No one is insisting only 1 type of Jew live here. We are saying that the law used should be Jewish Law and not some made up new stuff. People like us, have kept Judaism alive for 3500 years. The reform and conservative movement have decimated the Jewish People in a matter of 150 years. As far as non-Jews, Hashem created everyone. Everyone has their role in this world. Non-Jews are supposed to observe the 7 laws of Noah.
The problem is reform don't meet those requirements.
This guy Doug, or his name is actually "Torquemada", is living in the 16th Century. For his information, this is the 21st Century.
The God I serve never, EVER wants a man to mediate His relationships. Especially with arrogance and importance... white-washed tombs.
according to the bible, moses married zipporah, daughter of jethro, also known as reuEL,high priest and prince of the midianites.(note analogy to abraham and malkitsedek, priest of EL elyon(supreme/highest,king of SHALEM). israel is the patriarch jacob, who marrie two aramaites, both matriarchs, and members of his family.so much for the law of moses themselves,if you believe in the historicity of the bible.if you believe in other jewish jurisprudence, you know that rabbinical law cannot annul torah law.it can adapt,or put a proviso,in monetary matters only.
Caleb, your argument fails in every respect.
We are taught that Avraham and all the patriarchs were completely shomer Torah before Moshe Rabbeinu delivered the "second" and inferior Torah to Bnai Yisrael. Har Sinai was not a new revelation but a formal adoption of covenant, which was a holy theocrasy.
Solomon's Son King Rehoboam married an Ammonite. The Judean kings afterwards where her sons all the way down to the destruction of the first temple. The Torah only requires one generation for full integration for a convert or alien resident. And before that the Alien Resident is given special protections in the law.
That is the same fear I also have. My great great grandparents on my grandmothers side who came from eastern europe at the time of the polgroms to south america, changed their names and identity with fear of persecution, my great grandmother married a portuguese jew without a ketuba either, my grandparents eloped after living in sin for years, because my grandfather was the youngest and per our traditions the oldest one have to get married friend. So really how can I prove jewishness, with persecution worldwide and strict laws.
We're seeing with this and the proposed conversion bill that Judaism in Israel and in the Diaspora are on different tracks. In time there will be fundamentalist Judaism in Israel; liberal Judaism in the Diaspora. This does not bode well either for immigration from the Diaspora into Israel or for any sense of affinity between the Jews of one with the Jews of another. We are unfortunately witnessing a historic divorce.
No matter what documents you have it is not enough. So we left ISrael , got married back home. The state does not get eh benefit of us being tehre. Such power concentrated in teh hands of so few with such long reaching ramifications. Like the Mafia
Actually they wanted her family tree traced back to Har Sinai. You know there is something fishy about this story, yet you publish it to stir hate. come on she just needs to prove he mother is jewish case closed. It seems she cannot other than through conservative ministers, and I guess the Herzliya Rabbinate does not give much credence to Chabad. If her mother is Jewish I thing it would not be too difficult to get to the tuth. All this gal did is cause needless hatred with the help of your famous anti religious paper.
..... what the hell ! Make a little effort. Even if you are a Sokolow. And get properly married so that your children will also marry properly!
You are obviously commenting on something you know nothing about. Many, many have had this same issue including myself. My Jewishness was questioned by the Rabbinate and I cannot satisfy their criteria even though I have halachic justification and documentation. However, I am not Haredi so it didn't matter. My wife is Sefardi and its traced back 4 generations! But it wasn't good enough either because the 4th generation grandmother was in an orphanage- they couldn't justify her Jewishness even though this was 4 generations back! This is ridiculous and they are destroying Klal Israel.
So, again, papers alone do not often count but who handles them does very much count ! Lubavitch, and all doors are open, understand?
First, what is not conveyed in the article is that my mother DID meet with an Orthodox Rabbi and a letter was written by an ORTHODOX Rabbi attesting to the fact that I am a Jew. It even states my mother is a Jew. How DARE you come at me saying I am stirring hatred. I proved my mother AND my grandmother's Judaism - yet it wasn't enough. I am Jewish enough to make aliyah. I am Jewish enough to live in Israel. I am Jewish enough to die for the State of Israel as a soldier... but I'm not Jewish enough to get married. Get off your high horse and realize this is a bad situation that happens to MANY Jews here - Orthodox and Secular alike.
Did you even read the article? What's being asked for, from my sister, is to provide documents that were destroyed in the Concentration Camps. Documents and family members were destroyed because we are Jewish and to have the identity I am proud of and have taught my children to be proud of questiong by Jews is insulting enough. Then to have people like you look at this and say she's not putting forth enough of an effort is beyond ridiculous. Since there is no way to provide the documents being requested, what would you have her do? For the record, the issue is not the religous Rabbi's are making these statements, it's that Rabbi's, Jews, human beings are making this statement! I don't care what sect, anyone that says that my sister is not a Jew is simply wrong.
we don't need open doors, we need the rule of civil law. Let the orthodox control the synagogues were they belong to, not the private life of the citizens (and sometimes soldiers and ex-soldiers) of the State of Israel
How can you prove your mother is or was Jewish?
When I married in Israel I had to show proof that I was born of a Jewish mother and grandmother and letters from our rabbi (Reform) were accepted by the Tzfat Rabbinate. What happened?
I married in Israel in 1964 and also had to provide documentation of proof. My mother went to the Beit Din in London and despite not having any documentation proving her Judaism, the court issued the required letter to the Rabbinate in Tel-Aviv. My mother was born in London but was orphaned at an early age and simply had no proof. This must happen to many people but I have never heard such an outrageous decision. Obviously the Herzlia Rabbinate's behaviour and demands are completely unreasonable and unjustified!
IF Israel wants American Jews or other people to m,ake Aliyah, the Herzlia Rabbinate's is behavior and demands are unreasonable and unjustified.
I don't like the rabbinical politburo and their control over these matters. However I think there must be a specific reason they are denying Hillary the right to marry in Israel, and it was not mentioned in the article.
Just because her parents are divorced, why is it difficult for Hilary to produce her mother's marriage certificate? I have a strong feeling Hilary's mother was not born Jewish. By looking at her photo, she looks more Saxon with very little semetic features. Hilary seems to be riding more on her father's family coat tails; this I won't dispute but the mother I would dispute. There IS more to this story than meets the eye and even I can spot it. Come on Hilary, what is your mother hiding, what are you hiding? Fess up so this can be fixed for the sake of your Jewish boyfriend and his family.
"she looks more Saxon with very little semetic features": who did teach you?...
I shouldn't because it doesn't reflect on me, but as a Jew I am deeply ashamed of you and your racist comment. What an abomination!!
My mother was born to 2 Jewish parents, one of whom survived Auschwitz. I look more Hungarian than Saxon. There's not an ounce of Christian blood in me. I am Polish and Hungarian - split 50-50. And, by the way, I look like my father's family... you know, the side you think I am riding the coat tails of. If you actually look at my features, I look like a Polish Jew with reddish Hungarian hair. And I look just like my JEWISH grandmother. My mother is a Jew and HOW DARE YOU say otherwise. My parents Ketubah was thrown out when they were divorced. CLEARLY my mother is a Jew since they have a Jewish Get. You have a lot of Chutzpah to say that my mother is not a Jew.
I'm not racist. The story itself oozes with more questions than answers and it's pretty darn obvious why the Orthodox Rabbis pulled the plug. You don't have to have a Jewish mother to make Aliyah, a Jewish father or grandparent is sufficiant last time I looked. If Hilary deems herself a Conservative Jew then she should be married in a Conservative Synagogue. If she wants an Orthodox wedding she should wait and do what is necessary for the sake of her husband/children and convert if that's what it takes or their future children will have the same problem. I agree with an above post, bring in Hilary's mother if she has nothing to hide and this can all be cleared up immediately.
the Judaism and most of other religions. In Christianity or Islam you only need to want to be one of its member. Religion is made for people, that means for every human being. Not depending what their ancestors believed in or originate from. Everything else is religious racism.
Please understand that by "authentically-observed" I do not mean to disrespect any who consider themselves Jewish... unless they consider themselves somehow *more* "Jewish" than others.
Actually, the rabbis are barking up the wrong Tree. According to the Torah, Israelite identity follows the father's family, not the mother's (simply read Bamidbar).
look up ancient jewish customs!! you dont need a rabbi !!!
...the modern State of Israel is NOT Jewish in the sense that the Torah defines it. While there are millions of devout and secular Jews who believe themselves such and follow the Law to the best of their ability, the State has been taken over by the purveyors of a confidence game. These people use appeals to Jewish nature and to extremes of behavior to grab for themselves more money, political power and ego gratification than they would ever be entitled to in any rationally functional society. Fix *that* problem, and most of Israel's other problems will quickly fade.
So why shouldn't she? Who is to decide her Jewishness? And even if she was not she is entitled to marry right?
Wellll, there can be a bit of a hang up. In Israel, you have to belong to a state-sanctioned religion to marry. Google "protestants cannot marry in israel" , which will bring you to an Israeli law firm. But there are always options. You could convert to Islam, because Israel does allow Muslims to marry.
Muslims and Christian marriages in Israel are only "legal" if they are between members of the same religion. Because only religious marriage is acceptable here, "mixed" marriage is not recognized. My husband is Muslim, and I am Christian. After our marriage last year in Akko, we presented all of our documents to the Interior Ministry, which promptly refused to accept our "mixed" marriage. So, we had a second wedding in Cyprus, and that was accepted. Perhaps someday there will be Civil marriage in Israel--but until then, the current, arcane system makes it very difficult for a many people, including those like Ms. Rubin who aren't "Jewish" enough to marry here.
I am strongly opposed to these ultra religious laws and practices. I hoe that the people of Israel will soon undestand that religion is between the individual and their God while the state of the law applies to all citizens weather they are believers or not therefore must be religion blind.
but how can we get rid of the ultra religious laws? Any advise will be gratefully received!
Join Hiddush - Freedom of Religion for Israel www.hiddush.org
i dont have the ketoubah of my mother or my grandmother or any kitoubah of my family . yet i find disgasting that the rabbis are making life so difficult for our children! it is allright to support israel spiritually and financialy but when it comes to stupit religious laws we are still live in the middleages! what is the difference between us and the talibans? I am really very very angry and dissapointed!
The Torah talks about Miriam's attack on Moses's marriage. I doubt Israeli rabbinical courts would have recognized that marriage too.
Let's make life easier for Jews in Israel!
What happened to the Jewish people? Why we allow a group of bearded fanatics to define us? Who made them judges of anyone's belonging to the Jewish people? Haredim must be declared non Jewish foreign cult with the roots in Amalek .
Despite what this article and some of the comments imply, the Rabbinate didn't say she was not jewish enough, they asked for proof of Jewishness. Someone whose mother is married to a non-Jew has serious aspersions as to her jewishness. Maybe she is, maybe she isn't. In such a case, merely claiming to be a Jew does not make one Jewish. Neither does having grandparents who were Holocaust survivors. Neither does having prominent Zionist relatives (Herzl had non-Jewish grandchildren). A Conservative get [bill of divorce] or a declaration by a Conservative rabbi, is not Halachically recognized. If one does not wish to follow halacha, that is a personal choice. But that does not mean that those who do are racists.
sorry, but they ,if they define the rest of the world according to their rules, however the issue is a political one, not a religious one. As long as Israel continues to defer to religious authorities for civil issues, such problems will continue to exist., unfortunately, the "racist' label which we are trying to fight, will be
Don`t tell this story of rabbinate, witnesses Bet Din, Cyprus, Rabbinate and mariage in the States by some conservative rabbi to the secular europeans! just don't! Because they will go like "All these folks in the Middle East are going nuts". Some things you better dont tell the secular europeans! Having said that, I'd like to add one more thing: MAZEL TOV!
Did David and Solomon forget to read their 'Law of Moses'?!
that seems to be of much later date than both moses & ezra even as a dilemma /issue as such. but you're right, the current 'regulations' have little to do w/the law the way it was originally given. if anything, the torah & tanah are consistently patrilineal anyway.
Does Hilary and her yes-people really think they're the only grandchildren of holocaust survivors who had lost their ketuba? And do they really think that none of them managed to get married in Israel? We all know that the rabbanut can make things difficult in Israel, but perhaps she needed to perservere a little, just like other people did? And if there's blame to be apportioned for the situation, reserve some for the secular political parties (Labor in particular) who made deals with the Chareidi parties that gave them control of the Chief Rabbinate.
next time after his party tried to stop religious diversity.
- one that says "you're welcome to be a citizen of this state" but "you may not be able to marry /to be buried here". it's high time the rabbis got off their high horse, deciding over people's lives like a jewish version of the inquisition. there's no reason why israelis should have to continue living under this yoke, succombing to this state of affairs. get a secular system where the rabbis' jurisdiction is limitied to the level of congregations only, which people may /may not be members of & otherwise are free from having anything to do with if they so choose..
They came to work the fields drain the swamps, suffer from malaria and malnutrition, fight off the Fedayeen and fiercely fought the invading Arab Armies once Israel became a State. Those were the true founders, the builders, the workers, the dreamers, the wrecks that survived the Holocaust, those that fought for the Allies in WW2. Am Israel Chai. Shabbat Shalom.
shabbat shalom gam lekha, -
But it sure makes the corrupt rabbinate feel important though. What they make couples go through in Israel is humuliating. May civil marriage come to Israel soon (although the Cypriots won't like that).
It is heartless and lacking in utter compassion. It is a sin that cries to Heaven for vengeance. May it be granted. This is a prime example of why Judaism is perceived by many to be nothing but an arid system of legalism where any language speaking of or referring to compassion or sensitivity is scorned. That kind of language makes these rabbis bristle and they cae nothing of how this will impact the parties concerned or their families. What is important to them is 'THE LAW' and screw the individual.
You speak about the Law with such contempt even though it is this law built by millenium of love for the people of Israel and for all of Abrahams' peoples and yet you show nothing but ignorance about what made it possible for the Jewish people to survive despite everything thrown at them. It was 'the Law' and Jewishness as it relates to this tradition exists today in the Orthodox tradition only. The others are not true variants as Protestantism, Catholicism or Orthodox Christianity are withon Christianity. They are indeed, conscious or not about this, evolving 'adaptions' of secular thinikng based only on the arrogance and immorality of a godless world. Law to be the law needs to be DISPASSIONATE to be fair and just just to exist as such. Otherwise it is a merely a degrading process of corruption and cronyism producing INJUSTICE. If the definition of a group cannot be decided by this group then it can no longer be considered a viable group, as it has lost its powers of self definition and action and is merely a plaything for other powers. As far as 'the victim' is concerned if anyone from the outside comes in pleading for 'concern' based on their famoes dead relative reputation I consider it both sentimental and absurd that one should feel just sorry for her in particular over anyone the other millions in this situation or the further millions dying and suffering torture and starvation? There is a real question to be asked is about the motivation of this elitest hypocracy? What is it mean to be Jewish versus being a spoiled ambulance chasing media wannabe? The answers cannot lie in the hands of those who are most centrally of all are concerned with the annihilation of all religious and personal spiritual life in this material world and the return of manking to moral bestiality and illusions of human godhead?!
The power of the orthodox rabbinate must be smashed and freedom restored for all Jews of whatever background. Secular Israelis make up 80% of the population and it is time for us to vote for a govt that will not kiss the tuchas of these rabbis and their corrupt henchmen. We need civil marriage and divorce and we need to tell the rabid rabbinate to shove it.
in some country, around 60 years ago, let us call it X, people were requested to prove the exact opposite, people were asked to document and prove that no-one in their family, 4 generations backwards was jewish or married with anyone who can be related to someone jewish. Looks like the history repeats itself...
1) While being deprived of the opportunity to have one's partnership officially recognized is inconvenient, it's not nearly as inconvenient as, say, getting worked, shot or gassed to death and 2) There was no way to convert yourself into an Aryan.
The Jewishness test sure seems like an attempt to twist religion into race.
Maureen Ann, you are spot on. It seems that the Ultra Orthodox are more into performing purity tests rather than in the business of marrying couples. Israelis are now seeing the rotton fruit being harvested from giving power to the Ultra-Orthodox parties in the government. Pretty soon anyone who is not Hareidi will be considered not Jewish. Jewish Taliban anyone?
Regardless of their level of observance or lack thereof, all Jews are one and members of: "The People of Israel"
Biblical Israel is long gone and 2 to 3 thousand years has seen many converts to the religion of Judaism and intermarriage between Jews and non Jews. "All Jews are one," eh? According to the Rabbinate they're not.
wrong!! jewdaism is a religion not a race show how much you know regardless of level of observence fact are facts and we must love each and respect other unconditionaly
this is the position of the Secular Judaism.. the others are.. as you see from the story.
(... and they do not like the Zionists, who not exactly followers of neturei carta)
Hang in there Hillary - the forces behind the theocracy casuing this absurd situation will lose their power one day in our lifetime and in the meanwhile no one who matters will consider you or your children non jew or non israeli. One "less than haredi "american making aliya is worth countless haredim parasites and you have to believe things will change. Fight it in the courts and consider a bribe- i hear 50,000 IS is the going rate, dont accept but tell the newspaper the name of the rabbi who considered it. Yehiye tov !!
....My Lord...I have never heard of such utter disgusting and criminal behaviour in my entire life...what on earth are these radical religiuos fanatics trying to do?? What on earth is their agenda?? SCARY,, if you ask me, actually, come to think of it-----sounds worse than Nazi Germany..
That Israeli politicians from the entire spectrum have allowed this to happen is shameful. No wonder so many Jews in Israel could care less about religion. I will take one Hillary Rubin, who represents everything the Jewish people could want for now and the future, to a thousand of these guys, who are grounded somewhere in 17th century Poland.
They don't kick you out for marrying. They accept you as what you say your religion is. You don't have to prove. Look Iran is better than Israel!
I am disappointed that HAARETZ demands freedom of the press re the karn documentation affair but heavens forbid they should have the editorial integrity to publish any article contrary to thier own views or agendas about the rights and wrongs of e.g secular or observantJjew you are just tyipical of all Israelis I encounter the rules don't apply to me everything is only a recommendation! That there is no right or wrong only perpective.I think I'm going to start my own internet paper and you will loose some of the advertising revenue
for the left - our homegrown racism and xenophoby vis-a-vis people who are either our own, or are friendly minded. Instead pushing the absurd issue to love those who really without any doubt do hate us . Last one is the Christian theory, not even Christians practice. They know why. Not to forget Christianity is a Jewish religion. We see in the moment the re-emergence of these ideas in Israel, nobody else in the world, ever considered to take serious. I see the sane way in the moderation.
'The birthright and ethnicity' concept has been tried in the last century, with devestating effect: over 6mil people died. Israel, again, has learned nothing from its past: ethnic purity, no-matter how you dress it up, still has a dark womb and will surely give birth to nothing good. Please stop, Israel; every man is equal under the law and before God, regardless of blood lines.
Imagine the reverse. What would you think if you were told by the American government that if you wanted to get married you MUST get married in Israel, simply because you are TOO Jewish to get married in America? Israel needs to seriously re-examine its Mission Statement set forth in the Declaration of Independence.
this explains everything.... and don't forget what were the election promises of Yisrael Beitenu...
Most of the records they demand no longer exists, if the Rabbis are trying to make Jewish enemies unnecessarily, they've found the perfect way. Somehow, they remind me of the Swiss Bankers who demanded the impossible paperwork that was not available so they could keep the money. We should have kept the Levites, the Rabbis aren't qualified to make sound decisions. Leave it to them and Israel wont exist in another 50 years.
I was going to make the same point. The inability to produce death certificates was the excuse used universally to Europe, not only to confiscate bank accounts, but to refuse to pay death benefits on insurance. The rabbis and insurance companies agree: "We don't care" that you're a Holocaust victim. . . " In fairness, however, as a lawyer, I don't think that requiring this young lady to go to the Beit Din is an unreasonable administrative requirement. I know that this is unpleasant; I went there 40 years ago as witness to the Jewishness of a young American lady I knew who wished to marry an Israeli. But they accepted my testimony that I knew her mother, I had had Shabbos dinner at their house, she lit the candles, etc. I know things are infinitely stricter now, but there's nothing wrong in principle with requiring a reasonable quantum of evidence.
The Rabbinate better catch a wake up before they declare the whole Israel unJewish according to the law of Moses and Israel. Hillary, hope you succeed in retaining your Jewish lineage, do have a great marriage and enjoy Cyprus. It is already difficult enough making aliya. Suspect there may have been common sense in the time of Moses. Maybe the Rabbinate could consider using some?
Can we really afford to treat Jews living in Israel as "not quite good enough" Do we have that luxury? No, we don't and the orthodox hegemony on marriage belongs to the middle ages. Time to put it back there.
They are exactly like the Taliban.
There are some very unskilled and ignorant Rabbis but I bet you any money it is better to be a Jew in Israel than a woman in Taliban afghanistan. Talk sense or don't talk at all.
Good to see that name-dropping and distant relatives play no part in decision-making. Either she can prove her lineage or not. She is no better than anyone else. However, she has chosen to try to prove a point, true to her conservative convictions, and defy the requirements of the rabbinate. So what? Let her marry whomever she wants wherever she wants. She won't even need to get divorced should it not work out.
There needs to be a civil marriage, and all problems will be solved. Let the official from the municipality perform the marriage of the the couple, and then, if they wish, they can have religious wedding in whatever religious institution they desire. Honestly, I was considering converting to Judaism, because the more I learned about the religion, the more it fascinated me. That is not the case just with the religion, but with the people as well. I still wish to do it, but now I am wavering because of occurrences like this one. What if the rabbinate deems me non-Jewish? If it can happen to the niece of a Zionist leader, how could it not happen to a ger tzedek? What if I make aliyah and then I am forced to suffer intrusions into my private life by the rabbinate in order for them to see if I am an observant Jew? Weddings and conversions are burning issues, and Israel should do well to resolve them as fast as possible. Otherwise the country will start to mirror more radical Islamic countries ruled by the letter of Shariah law.
They seem to have no problem getting married in Israel and opening the most 'un-Jewish' businesses.
Just a guess
The whole pettiness of the discussion of who is a Jew, combined with the obstinate idea that Israel should be a "Jewish" state begins to turn against the Jewish people itself. That is what happens when ethnic purity is considered to be important.
Knowing many restaurant owners in Herzeliya, I can tell you that getting a kashrut there only takes some money - doesn't matter if you have a dead pig hanging in the window. They are nothing but petty little men trying to leverage whatever little authority they can scratch out for themselves in order to make money and make themselves feel important. They had nothing to do with the formation of Israel - many even fought it. Now they want to run the country and are grabbing for power in the slimiest of ways.
Before anything, welcome to Israel Hillary, I hope that you are aware that despite this ridiculous incident Israel still it's the best place for a jew, specially a committed one as you, to live. A piece of advice: even if you do a civil wedding in Cyprus don't go to the Ministry of Interior to be recognized as married. If you do you will be still playing by the system and if, G'd forbid, you divorce in the future you'll have to do it in the Rabbinate and suffer this process again. You can live as "yeduim betzibur" and have almost the same rights as a married couple without giving legitimacy to this corrupt system. Get legal advice on this. The Rabbinate in Israel it's the most terrible institution in Jewish History and the main cause israelis doesn't want to know anything about judaism. Good luck and Mazal Tov!
Now Jews can know how non-Jews have felt in Israel for years. Second-class.
If I were Jewish I would find that an insult.
I do understand the terrible pain and frustration but this is not being done against you but FOR my daughter the Rabbis are the spiritual guardians of our nation for two millenia you must trust them and perservier as what they do is without malice.
Maniac.
Because its written in the bilble
I am sure the standards of Moses and the Israel of his time would have been far more sensible
Never got the land of milk and honey, and would be appauled I guess if he heard all this nonsense made up demanding that old laws that belong to yesterday will be appropriate today.
They are bound by the laws specified in Torah. They are treating you the same way they would treat anyone else. If they say they are not sure you are exactly Jewish then they are on to something and deep in your heart you know that they are right. You have other options available to you like the conversion. You must remember, girl, that Hitler gassed the Jews but we can never allow the Hitlerites or Haiderites identify who is Jewish and who is not. That is what the book is for.
it is all about war between orts and cons and reforms. Orts don't want to share $$$ from goverment.
Explain how requesting documents that do not exist, from relatives who were murdered in the Shoah, helps anyone? They have not evaluated her character or her level of observance, they are sending her on a paper chase with no end, or they are forcing her to convert according to Haredi standards. These rabbis may be Jews, but they are not Zionists. Either they will overreach and be supplanted by a secular marriage authority, or they will cause the destruction of the state of Israel. I pray for the former, not the latter.
they aren't, & it's truly misleading of you to even name the torah where the issue of deciding who's jewish & who's not, related to their origin, isn't treated at all (intermarriage is, though). if anything, the torah & the tanah as a whole are consistently patrilineal & the current rules are of a much later date.
Well then if they are bound by old laws I guess you will be stonning the next woman who has an affair, after all that too is written.
And Ruth said: 'Entreat me not to leave thee, and to return from following after thee; for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God;
Once again Israel is forcing out its strongest supporters. Ms. Rubin, you should fight this. I feel sorry for this great insult to you and your family. Truly sorry for this. I hope you are able to look forward to the most important day of your life despite this insult. Can you imagine if the situation were reversed, and you were told in America you must go to Israel to get married because you are Jewish? Who would stand for such nonsense? Re-read the Israel Declaration of Independence, it states quite clearly the intended values of this country. Great to see an article about the realities of living here in this highly undemocratic society. I hope this makes its way to the American press, but I doubt it.
Does anyone know what will happen with her kids if she doesn't follow through on this terrible process?
I cannot find this article in the Hebrew issue. Please share this type of article with your mainstay of readers. Your English language readers know about this situation, while the your main Hebrew audience - not so much!
it's sad how quickly you would turn your back on the country due to the disgusting orthodox monopoly of religion. "wondering whether she made the right decision in immigrating" As soon as Americans run into trouble here (no matter how righteous their cause) - their first instinct is to threaten to leave. HIllary - we need you HERE - working to be part of the solution - no matter how unjust the Orthodox treat you. This is our country Hillary- please don't give up on it so easily.
Like Judaism, but without vague and cumbersome ethnic requirement! Pure universal Monotheism without pork, foreskins, and idols!
jump from a benighted, medieval myth to a derivative, benighted medieval myth
But you guys are too crude with women and democracy. Besides, your fundamental side is too scary for western people.
She might take you up on your offer.
and wear a Burka.
Not only that more and more people are being forced to go abroad to marry. If you follow the logic of the Rabbinut, all the children of people who marry abroad won't be able to in Israel because their parents won;t have Ketubah from the Rabbinut.
Mazal Tov and welcome to Israel. Ms Rubin should know that there are nonJews who claim to be Jewish for various reasons. Many are missionaries. So there have to be some guidelines and some gatekeepers. Now, wherever there are guidelines there are borderline cases that are troubling. That's life. Ms Rubin could have gone to the rabbinical court and brought some witnesses to testify she's Jewish just as many, many others have done, and the story would be over, without the headlines.
...started with some very disingenuous people saying, "Let's be reasonable about this..." and then doing the exact opposite.
While the sick religion is mixed with politics and the rabbis with thier underhand filthy searches for jews MOST JEWS ARE LEAVING ISRAEL Who need to follow these antiquated downright rotten religious. ??? Bye Bye
But the rabbis are called mullahs.
After making aliyah in 1975, I, too, wanted to get married (1977). I took a letter from my rabbi in Ohio to the Rabbinate in Tel Aviv to "prove" my Jewishness. Unfortunately, the letter was signed by my conservative rabbi (and a second letter was signed by my mother's conservative rabbi from Pittsburgh, PA) and the letters were not deemed acceptable (conservative rabbis, of course!). So, I had to go to the Bet Din with two male witnesses who had known me "from birth!" I took with me my husband's closest friend as well as the recently married husband of the friend who had introduced me to my soon-to-be husband. One had known me for about five minutes and the other for about six months via his wife. Their "sworn testimony" that I was Jewish was acceptable. Nice, right? Go to Cyprus. Better still...go to the States and get married by your conservative or reforn rabbi. At least you will be married by a rabbi who cares about your well-being, your soul, and your Jewish education rather than going blindly by the book and not even looking at the human being her/himself. Nevertheless...mazel tov!
I knew of one case in which a prospective bride planning to marry in Israel could bring a letter only from her Conservative rabbi in the US as no Orthodox rabbi knew her. The Rabbinate told her, "We prefer sheker (lies) from an Orthodox rabbi over emet (truth) from a Conservative rabbi."
And why would people in their right minds continue to put up with this?
My wife & I celebrate our 30 wedding anniversary today. We got married in Israel 30 years ago. We came on aliya separately from the UK. We too had to go through this demeaning procedure then despite having exemplary documentation of our Jewishness. The situation has not changed. Afterwards I stopped wearing a kippa in public. When our eldest daughter got married last year, she had no truck whatsoever with the Rabbinate and she and her husband were married by our Conservative Rabbi and they had an official wedding in Prague (with a lot of Russians). This situation is loony but it has not changed over the years. The young people are voting with their feet and the rabbinate should be abolished as a complete waste of time and money.
I'm a firm believer in the separation of state and religion. It upsets me greatly when we get religious parties involved in our private lives. This said I have to add that the opposite also happens: there are people who expects the religious establishment to mold its ways to the national interest. And this is equally absurd. There should be civil marriage in this country. And conservative/reform marriages should be recognized too. But, if you decide to marry in the rabbinate, you have to accept their instructions. If you are not ready for that, just don't go there. In this case, the rabbi in question doesn't have the authority to do anything but what he has done: refer the case to a Beit Din, unless he is certain the woman is jewish. I myself inmigrated to Israel, and married here in the rabbanut. I was told the Beit Din had to review my case to make sure I'm jewish, and I accepted it. Why shouldn't I?
In the current state of Israel, there is no such thing civil marrage. It is the whole point, - no. choice. If it was, this artcile would not appear
if choice existed in this regard (incl. the choice of civil marriage), half of those now turning to the rabbinate probably would've gone elsewhere or wouldn't have bothered w/a religious ceremony at all.
On the one hand, you say there should be civil marriages. On the other hand, "if you decide to marry in the rabbinate" - well, no s---, where else can they do so, legally, in Israel? This is the outcome of decades of Labor and Likud kowtowing to the religious so that either can make up a government. This is the sad fact of a dysfunctional politicla system.
they have "screwed up". They could start by treating people coming before them with respect not behaving like carricatures of public servants
Not the Rabbinate
- & he's gonna tell them "you guys have really lost it"..
Dear Allan as some of her family perished in the camps and others fought in the 1948 war to put you where you are now in a position even to go on facebook, where we all could have been dead,, do the army realise who are the fighters and the real heroes and shut that mouth.
mazal tov to you guys the only thing that the rabbinate would take other then documents would be green paper with in god we trust printed on it, if you know what i mean
Namely, "In G-d We Trust; All Others Pay (Lots of) Cash."
"Those born into a life of comfort neither understand nor fully appreciate the sacrifices of those who have gone before, until they themselves must make real, unacknowledged sacrifices of their own."
It is heartwarming that this woman wants to be a member of the Jewish Nation . However if her mother was catholic - her father or grandfather or great father could have have been the chief rabbis of Israel- she is then catholic. Since religion is determined by mother and not by father. If her father was worried about his children , he should have married a real Jewish girl - or have his girlfriend go through conversion. Maybe the rabbinate people couldn't excplain this common fact -intelligently.
there's nothing anywhere about her mum being catholic (not about having converted to catholicism either), only that she remarried to a catholic. the ketuba of rubin's parents isn't being questioned either (only that it's now invalid), it's the grandparents' ketubot (incl. those they may have possessed from earlier generations) that are the impossible problem. in any case, rubin was born to jewish parents that since divorced - nothing that should invalidate her jewishness. israeli rabbis are obviously doing this to a lot of people. do you ever wonder why the law of return was torn loose from halakha altogether? people who are israeli should be able to marry whomever & on whatever grounds they wish, freely. let the rabbis run the congregations & preside over the rules there, not meddle w/every citizen's life in general.
Read the article again. After Ms. Rubin was born, her mother remarried to a Catholic man. Her mother is Jewish, albeit now intermarried.
it states that her parents divorced and her mother was remarried to a catholic, not that her mother was catholic. In any case, it is beyond absurd that this girl has to put up with such prejudice.
Her mother isn't Catholic. Did you bother reading the article? It said after her parents divorced, her mother later married a non-Jew. Thus, the woman was raised by Jewish parents. Her mother remarried. It didn't say that her mother converted to Catholicism. She just married a Catholic. Her mother is not having more children at her age. What's so hard to understand?
Her STEPFATHER is Catholic.
Who said her mother was catholic? Read the article!
"And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite woman" (Num. 12.1). And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them, and he departed. Numbers 12.9.
many of my friends got away seemingly w/o any problem. Besides soviet issued passwords they didn't have any other proof of their Jewishness and still Rabbinate was sufficed with those papers..
So many from the CIS states have abused the system and that is why there are extremely strict measures in-place. Sadly the innocent suffer too...a bit like Gaza, really.
i agreed with everything that she says and then right at the end she had to throw in the line about everybody hating Jews. really ...get over it. most of the world doesn't really care. On this line alone I believe that she is Jewish. Polish? It is your choice if you want to be a victim. Shabat shalom
So you're Jewish, I care. I love my religion and heritage (too bad Israel and I seem to differ on our Jewish values), but truly, really, almost nobody outside the rabinate really cares about your Jewishness...they just yawn and wish Israel will behave better. You're a victim of a screwed up Rabbinate not of worldwide hatred!!
In Iran, which is a non-secular, non-democratic country under Islamic rule, you won't face such a radical religious and stupid reason.
The orthodox and other insistent religious types who claim to hold a lock on determining "jewishness" are mistaken. There are plenty of secular Jews in the world in fact the secular Jews outnumber the wacked out atavistic crowd by far. The orthodox are definitely NOT jewish by today's standards, let them go off in a corner and be "Jews for Schneerson" or some such thing. It is high time for Israel to recognize juridically that the Jewish people is composed by various groups of people and that it is not defined by a fascist blood line!!!
can the "Jews for schneerson" and show some respect your acting as bad as the herziliya rabbinate i got married in Israel but still had to prove my blood line and i was furious but had no choice I think the rabbi she went to is nuts i too cannot provide the documents past my parents maybe my grandparents it is vital to have a Jewish identity kept in Israel but you must know being Jewish is blood line not feeling or otherwise your Jewish or you’re not Jewish no middle ground the fact that there is no tact or common sense used is a real big problem but all those that marry out of the Jewish fait are the ones destroying Jewish identity not the religious they are the only ones making sure there will be Jews in 50 to 100 years not the reform or conservative tough words but the truth
It is time to replace the haredi establishment in our rabbinical courts with national religious rabbis.
Its a terrible indictment on the so called keeper of the jewish faith. The day when a government grows a pair and represents the majority will be the day this will change.
It's way past time that civil marriage in Israel became an option. The Rabbinate has pulled this shit for far too long and we have been too complacent to change it. Demands of the kind noted in this article are unreasonable, obstructionist and downright discriminatory, not to mention being a violation of Halacha. The option of civil marriage has become imperative due to the Rabbinate's arrogance and inflexibility. If there's no change, in a few years there will be more Israelis married in Cyprus than in Israel.
Thank you for the support! This has been a terrible time for us as we just wanted to do ONE ceremony and have it be in Israel. Unfortunately, we are now forced to go abroad.
You tried to do the right thing and were met by callous requirements that are impossible to meet. I can't produce any paperwork from my Mothers family except her passport. If her Jewish name weren't on them, how would anyone know my heritage? What happens when they die and you have no "paperwork"? Have a happy life and don't worry about them, they had no place in the order of things, they took the positions of the Levites and have become corrupted by their zeal and ignorance.
I feel so angry about what you are going through, ....... I hope that you will enjoy your Conservative ceremony, which will, I am sure, be beautiful and more meaningful that most of the typical rabbanut ceremonies... (I was recently at a wedding where someone was SMOKING UNDER the chuppah...and the rabbi didnt stop him/her...) Enjoy your celebration and have a long and happy life with Craig.
Dear Hillary, Mazal tov to you and Craig. You need to find a conservative Rabbi in Israel to marry you. There are some in the major cities. Who cares what the Haridim say about it?
I attended a wedding in Israel where, in the middle of the reading of the ketubah, the band erred and thought the ceremony was over. It started playing in full blast and then had to be silenced for the ceremony to go on. It was clear that no one present cared about the reading of the ketubah, it was just something to put up with.
This is so outrageous I don't know where to begin. I couldn't provide ketubot for four generations. Yet I'm as Jewish as any of the pious hypocritical "haredim." It's enough to make me convert to Islam. The "pious" and "orthodox" are doing more to destroy Judaism and Israel than any outside force. Will no one in Israel finally say enough. I for one am going to lobby the U.S to stop sending three billin dollars a year to this most strange, bizarre, and unJewish state. Shame on you. Do you "heredim" work for a living? Aren't you just parasites?? You say you study torah all day, yet you ignore the most basic prinicples of torah. No, I think instead I'll covert to Christianity. Jesus was right. It's not what goes into a man that contaminates him; it what comes out.
If being a Jew depends on these loons, we'd have no Jews left. I am proud of my Jewish heritage despite these know nothing power seekers. If you recall, the Levites were to rule not rabbis. Now, we know why.
I came here two years ago and have since been able to understand the true bizzarro nature of this place. I completely agree, if the US stops sending the 3 billion, and ends the tax breaks for the additional 2 billion in donations, this country will have to grow up.
does it bother you when this same cultish, cliquey, disdainful treatment is applied -- and much worse so -- to goyim? could this kind of thing bear just a tiny bit of responsibility for "anti-semitism"?
can trace their roots back in Scotland, as Jews, for over four hundred years (complete with govt documents naming us as Jews) and anecdotally for another hundred or so years in Europe - but I couldn't produce any 'official Jewish' documents on our 'jewishness' beyond my great grandparents. Lack of paperwork didn't stop Hitler killing my cousins. Guess what, I've decided 'bugger you' and we're happily living back in Scotland - as Jews (not haredim approved).
Sounds like Salem Witch trials to me.
the religious in israel have a power the vatican must envy
is what it means to be "Jewish democracy"? Respect the rights of all? It's true, Israel has lost its Jewish soul.
This is so sick. These people are like Iranian Mullahs;maybe worse.
and I am 100% pure:) blood. BTW, the Isr. ministry of interior is also run by Rabbinate. They have people reasponsible for looking into Anglos, Russian, French immigrants etc. They act like Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst. I know names of some of these guys, but I don't think moderator will let me out.
who knows her family to testify as to Jewishness of the maternal line.
no, you and your ilk need to modernize your medieval mindests
Something is amiss, may well be the fact that her mother married a Catholic, granted after the child was born to a Jewish Mother. A Shomer Mitzvot Beth Din witness...? Maybe, then maybe she comes from a Reform Shul, another contentious point. Indeed a sad story, weddings in Cyprus have always been as a last resort, even when I was a kid in Israel. That was 50 years plus ago. Nothing has changed, yet I always ask the same question,...why.?
offer the greedy lot money. That's the only qualification that lot really love and obey.
Among the ridiculous and non-halachic things I have been asked to "witness" by the rabbis: Has your friend ever been married before? Of course I said no, but seriously, how could I possibly know? Was I with them every second since I met them? This is the pseudo-halacha that the Israel Rabbinate is based on. The true reason that this bureaucracy exists is to funnel money to an unproductive sector of society.
The state of Israel won't allow its Jewish citizens to get married unless they can produce documentation to prove their Jewishness? The very documentation that might have disappeared at the time of the Holocaust? Hello, does anyone see a problem here? I am neither Jewish nor Israeli, but I know enough about the situation to know that the demographic shift happening right now may eventually challenge the Jewish character of Israel... help me out here... wouldn't you want young Jews to be able to get married and start having kids, with as few roadblocks as possible. Least of which is insulting them by questioning their Jewishness and possibly making them consider leaving the nation, as this young woman is thinking about. Then again, I'm just a dumb Canadian... I must be missing something.
In America to get a civil marriage you have to provide physical legal information like social security etc. and to demonstrate citizenship. Even more so for a Jewish/Israeli wedding when religion too plays a role it is more then reasonable to have to bring reliable proof that one is Jewish. I dont complain when the DMV requires countless physical papers. I think her problem is more of an ego/anti-right wing issue. at the end of the day she wouldnt have to provide the ketubot if they werent available and they wouldve found some other method.
I suggest you read this again. She is a zionist she wants to be here. They went through the correct channels. This is not about EGO! this is about a jewish state that is refusing to recognize its own people.
Andrew, you may have missed the part where Hillary and Craig arrived at the Rabanut with all the documents they could possibly get their hands on. I know the couple personally and they did everything they could to convince these morons that they were Jewish. This is unprecedented, at no time in Jewish history that I know of has anybody wanting to get married had to "prove" their Jewishness. This is a power hungry, corrupt bunch of narcissistic pigs who are trying to make life impossible for young couples who choose not to pay them. If they had walked in with a blank check, they would have their authorization within 5 minutes. Read the article in full before you comment.
"In America to get a civil marriage you have to provide physical legal information like social security etc. and to demonstrate citizenship." Wrong. Every state has its own rules about civil marriage. For example, I was witness to a civil marriage in the state of Virginia in which the groom was an American citizen and the bride a citizen of a South American country.
Zionism has nothing to do with Jewish Laws of marriage. "ego" was the lack of a better word for her personal jewish identity versus her halachik jewish identity which needs to be proven.
Andrew, ask yourself if YOU could provide that level of detain about your family history. I sure can't . As a matter of fact, after my father passed away, my mother realized she couldn't find her ketubah. Broke her heart a second time - but that's life - very few people have the level of documentation that was asked for. The problem was, the rabbinate was not willing to act within reason and perpetrated a standard that 90% of all Jews can not live up to. Furthermore, on a personal note, if I had someone questioning my faith and history to the point of persecution, and that person was ONE OF MY OWN PEOPLE - how is one to feel? I would be insulted, and angry, feeling left out my my own people history and heritage. The rabbinate went out of his way to cause pain and anger instead of working to bring her to her bersheit, shame on him!
Very sad what has become of Zionism.
It is about a specific Rabbinate (Herzlia) who is demanding documentation which is not required from other offices. My daughter was married a few years ago and she wasn't required to bring anything other than details of her parents which we provided. There is something rather weird about this story OR the officials in Herzlia are after bribes.
We are hearing more and more stories of this from Olim from around the globe. And mainly from the western countries.
to contribute to Israeli fundraising causes anymore.
...the Hagees and Bushes of the world do contribute... maybe they're getting more benefit from Israel than her citizens? Not meaning to criticize E in any way; rather the chutzpah and hypocrisy that are fundamental constituent parts of the "Jewish" State.
I understand that this is a sticky situation in the Holy Land. A divisive line has been drawn in the sand between those who embrace the Rabbinical authority, and those who are offended by it. It's about time that civil marriage be introduced into Israeli society. Enough of the orthodox monopoly on marriage. Having said that though, I hope that Ms. Rubin's positive experiences in Israel have outweighed the bad. Israel isn't for the faint of heart. I hope that this is the worst of her troubles. I have been through a similar situation with the rabbinute, but when times got tough, I reminded myself why I chose to be a part of the Israeli nation...all of the good things, and the positive experiences that I have on a daily basis in Israel. There's no better place in the world for us Jews. And free thinking, progressive Jews recognize and appreciate that. That's the majority of Israel. That's the part of Israel that I love.
Israel needs more olim like Sarah - that don't threaten to abandon the country when difficulties arise.
Even though the behavior of the Rabbinate is outrageous I also hope her good experiences will outweigh the bad
Yoav #7 Hillary is not "threatening" to leave Israel because "things got a little tough" - her identity is beings questioned and in a way which would make most of us stand up and head to picket lines in other parts of the world. I too had to go through something similar, luckily my interview with the Rabbinate was quick and easy - see as an Orthodox convert who was converted by a beit din in Israel - all I had to do was bring my teudat gerut and I was immediately "kosher" - my wife on the other hand had to bring pictures of gravestones in the US, Canada and Belarus... each Rabbinic authority (while claiming to all obey the "laws of Moshe and Israel" when it comes to marriage can decide on their own litmus test. As someone who has made major changes in his life and sacrificed to help build the modern state of Israel - I still find the typical Israeli attitude of "nu - if only you spoiled Western olim..." - let's face it - if the aveage israeli would actually get involved in his/her country beyond the mandatory IDF service (which yes, I did complete and yes I also do my miluim) then this country would be a much better place. it's a bout time we all stopped running scared of the Ultra-orthodox. I have a news flash - fo rmost of them, if you could even prove your matrileneal lineage back to four generations - they still wouldn't allow their children to marry you....
How can anything outweigh the experience of being told that one is not sufficiently "Chosen" to be married to one's chosen spouse?
More stories like these will keep appearing the more Israelis let the religionists strangle the country to death. Eventually there will be a point when any non-Orthodox jew will be declared a non-jew because they will have the guns, the power, and the pulpit.
Dear Hillary, As a "supporter" of an unreal, idealized Israel you should done some research on what life is really like in Israel before coming to live here.
We are dealing here with a simple subject, a union between a man and a woman. Why would the Rabi get in the middle is beyond me.
Dear Alan, I did my research before I lived here. The Rabbanut changed some of their practices on marriage licenses in May. I made Aliyah 4 years ago. I didn't do it at 18 as an idealistic teenager. I did it at 25 having known full well what I was getting myself into. Think before you respond to someone.
IT"S THE REAL THING NOTHING COMES EASY. GO BACK TO ________ AND LIVE IN DENIAL.....LOVE
Very nice Alan! and what about people who came here 20 years ago, when the rabbinut had enough sense to realize that they have a duty to the people of Israel and not just the Haredim. The situation has steadily deteriorated over the last 20 years and now they are on a witch hunt. They are abusing their power and the sooner it is taken away form them the better.
Right on. In America, we're always presented with the fact that Israel is a democracy and isn't that wonderful. It's a religious state! OMG, how un-American is that. Not to mention, impractical--all the various subsets of a religion never agree with each other anyway.
also a dejure racist state, which is also very unamerican (today's america)
it is because everyone believs that their G=d and their way is the only way that we have war. and people like you only make the situation worse
They are full of it. There needs to be civil marriage in Israel, and for a religious marriage, you go to whatever religious body you choose to follow.
EVERYWHERE EXCEPT IN ISRAEL....IT'S HARD TO ADMIT YOUR ARE DIFFERENT.....IT'S CALLED MISPLACED MODESTY
Made Aliyah in 1999. Got married in 2000. Had to go to the Rabbinical court to prove my Jewishness. In the end, after a couple of appearances there, the head Rabbi called my 90-year old grandma up in Florida in the middle of the night her time and asked her in Yiddish where her parents were buried. She told them and that's how they let me get married. It's right out of a movie, but that's what makes the Haredim feel important. See why they're unpopular?
I was on the local hevra kadisha, on a beit din for gerut, and the baal koreh at a haredi shul -- but in the US. I still had the "pleasure" of the Jerusalem rabbinate's acquaintance, and jumped through all of their hoops to prove my Jewishness -- not all of which appear in the law of Moshe and Israel either. It makes Cyprus look very appealing.
BS
I hope she has a beautiful wedding . Mazzeltov !
WHO CARES
The Nazis did not check for Jewishness according to Halacha. And the Jewish people need not accept the Psak of Adolph Hitler.
If she's Jewish, she's Jewish.
Not more ridiculous than using fairy tales to colonise a country and deny the rights of the indigenous population.
IT'S BACON.....DEAR JASON.....I AM SURE YOU LOVE BACON IN THE MORNING BUT TO SOME PEOPLE 5770 YEARS IS A LITTLE MORE THAN BACON.....IN THE MORNING
just bring 2 jews mebers of a synagog in israel knewing your fammily and it is ok and kosher. i walkd that way, no problem at all. masaltov
As is common here er have another response where it doesn't belong from someone who has no idea what it is talking about. Please refrain from disseminating your ignorance,
This is the problem about going public with the horrors of the ulta-orthodox - it just gives fire to the lungs of the antisemities that are looking for reasons to hate us (officially Jewish or not). Yet, is it right that religious cooercion exist in a supposedly modern state precisely because we are so weak in the face of holocaust and antisemitism. My heart goes out to you Hilary! Be reassured that the way things are going, Jewishness is a now you see it now you don't kind of event in today's Israel. Something will break at some stage...
