Six people were killed and dozens injured over the weekend in a series of traffic accidents across the country.
Eyal Mashani, 23; Lior Rada Razon, 24; and Benny Avigad, 22, died in the predawn hours of Friday in a collision in Petah Tikva. Four other youth were hurt with two sustaining serious injuries.
"This is a head-on collision," a senior police officer said. "One of the automobiles swerved from its lane and collided with the car coming from the opposite direction. We are currently investigating the reasons for the crash."
The driver of the one of the vehicles, 17, is also the cousin of one of the victims and only recently received her driver's license.
Police suspect she violated a law limiting the number of passengers new drivers are permitted to drive without a chaperon.
She is hospitalized in serious condition, as is another passenger.
"The car was crushed, and we initially found two injured who were conscious on one side, and two others who were dead on the other side," said Reut Aharoni, a paramedic with Magen David Adom who arrived at the scene of the accident.
"Only when we started extricating the wounded did we see another body. The injured were conscious and one of them asked us to rescue him. The driver said nothing, she was directly underneath the wheel."
Also Friday, a 24-year-old man was killed in a collision outside the northern town of Lapidot.
In East Jerusalem, a 5-year-old was killed in a hit-and-run accident near her home in the Ras al-Amud neighborhood.
Police forces later arrested a suspect whose driver's license had not been renewed for five years.
