Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will pay a visit to Germany on October 18 and will meet with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. The visit to Berlin was planned last year but was postponed several times.
Sharon met yesterday with German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, who arrived in Israel as part of his visit to the Middle East. Fischer also met with Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and opposition leader Shimon Peres.
Among the subjects raised by Fischer were the separation fence, the building of additional housing units in Jewish settlements in the territories, the hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners, and the situation of PA Chairman Yasser Arafat.
Sharon and Shalom raised the problem of anti-Semitism in Europe, to which Fischer responded: "It is not a problem of Israel, it is a problem for us, the Europeans."
