Report: Assad due in Egypt to discuss fear of Israel-Syria war
Syrian president expected to comment on reports that Syria delivered scud missiles to Hezbollah.
By Zvi Bar'el Tags: Hezbollah Israel newsSyrian President Bashar Assad was due Tuesday night to land in Egypt "within hours," his first visit in four years, several Arab media outlets reported. The urgency of the surprise trip stems from a fear of war between Israel and Syria.
A Syrian commentator noted that Assad, who last week denied that Syria had delivered Scud missiles to Hezbollah, would seek to make clear that this information was false. He believes that the accusations are "an Israeli excuse for warmongering," according to the media reports.
In their meeting, Assad and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak would also discuss the Palestinian reconciliation talks between Fatah and Hamas.
Assad's visit to Egypt would be his first since the Second Lebanon War, when he called Arab leaders who did not back Hezbollah "half men." Saudi Arabia and Egypt responded by refusing to meet with Assad and by launching a media attack on Hezbollah. This included Egyptian accusations that the Lebanese group was targeting sites in Egypt.
Saudi Arabia had already cooled relations with Syria before the war, following suspicions that it might have been involved in the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.
But the Saudis thawed relations last year, largely due to Lebanon's parliamentary elections and Syria's desire to support Hariri's son Saad, who became prime minister. In October, the Saudi king arrived for a historic visit to Damascus, but Syrian efforts to persuade Mubarak to do the same failed; the Egyptian president refused to talk to Assad.
Both Saudi Arabia and Egypt seek to minimize Iranian influence among Arab countries in the Middle East and see embracing Syria as a step that might make it easier for Assad to pick a side.
However, Egypt has been waiting for a gesture of apology and reconciliation from the Syrian president. Assad's request to visit his Egyptian counterpart after Mubarak had undergone an operation could represent a good start for a better relationship between the two men.
In the meantime, Egypt is pushing for a special conference to discuss the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, with all Middle Eastern countries attending, including Israel. The conference would aim to persuade Israel to sign the treaty.
Egyptian sources say the permanent members of the Security Council support a Middle East nuclear conference, but it is still unclear whether the conference would be empowered to negotiate with Israel.

Due to Egypt (under Sadat, Mubarak's erstwhile boss) having started Yom Kippur War in 1973 and done roughly equivalent to Pakistan's performance--SHOVED BACK to ante-bellum status-quo de-facto borders by UNPREPARED foe--in 1965 war (which Assad chooses not to remember).
All the Arab countries could attack Isreal and they would lose.Isreal has proven this before,Isreal has a very strong friend in America which if the Arabs all attack Isreal America would respond.
The only time a return of Ramat HaGolan could even be considered is with a regime change in both Damascus and Teheran; (and even then, I would hardly be an enthusiast for this):-but particularly at this moment, how could anyone rationally contemplate handing over the Golan to Syria since in effect this would be handing over the Golan to Iran.
(1) Iran"suggests" to Syria to place Scuds in the hands of Hezbollah. (2) Israel has to be prepared for another attack from Lebanon that could hit Tel Aviv this time. (3) Then "rattled" by the concern that his country could be attacked by Israel, Assad runs off the Cairo for solace. (4) At the same time, the USA irresponsibly decides to place an Ambassador in Damascus after 5 years of absence. (5) Conclusion-Iran calls all the shots and it playing off everyone else, Syria, Israel, Lebanon and the USA like puppets.
I see all the hateful threats Arabs from different countrys are making. Meanwhile you leave your shoes and run, use your wives as human shields Etc. Etc. Israel has and will continue to be peaceful but at the end of the day if she is attacked the blood of your Arab brothers is on your own hands. And no matter how many condemnations the anti semetic United Nations declare remember what they are doing in darfur where your muslim brothers are slaughtering millions. They are doing nothing, the same they will do for you.
Hey Nasser, Egypt.s Nasser had a similar thought in 1967. Remind Israeli's for helping them recapture Jerusalem. This time let's bring all of the Israelis' arch enemies against the Seat of Justice and watch what you missed out on in the Koran manuel towards self-humiliation not to mention the ultimate destruction. Hey Nasser, if you can't make you'll get the aftermath by proxy. I'll pray for you to rediscover yourself and Truth before THE ULTIMATE JUDGEMENT
Pres. Assad, your father throughout his life knew how to settle the Israeli and Syrian conflict. Unfortunately, the ends he capitulated into agreement got disastrous results for Syria. "You" were warned about forging an alliance with North Korea and capitulated to other Syrian interests without truly considerating what Israels' reactions would be of a perceived threat of such an alliance without conscience. Your father new how compulsive you could behave, knowing the acorn was not far from the tree. Syria can be spared from the devastation that your Iranian counterpart is not informing you of, especially when its clerics hate Damascus. Do not be fooled by lost descendants of Ishmael. Shalom! And trust not the Russians who will ravage the Syrian people on their way to a destruction unimaginable. Irans' hook in their jaw is not coincidental. It's anchored within Russia's psyche out of (IGNORANCE) to Prophetic Judgement. This will end badly for all enemies of Israel.Even your father knew
"If Assad wants peace he should offer full normalization of relations in exchange for the peaceful return of the Golan Heights. From Israel`s point of view, that`s a deal worth taking. Syria has nothing to lose." In one way you're right: Syria has nothing to lose. But after 62 years of getting to know that neighbor, don't you think Israelis have wised up to Arab intentions and rhetoric ? It's certainly not a deal worth taking; in fact, it's a pipedream.
My point to Mr Nasser was that if he truly believed Israel was about to be overun then he should understand that Never means Never again and that if the Jews of Israel have to face the the Syrians, the Lebanese and Hamas with possibly Iran as overseers then they might as well take as many of their enemies with them as possible. Or would the Final Solution be more fun for you guys to watch?
62 years about time to taste this pie syria is ready Assad is great chef enjoy while you can
Yeah, yeah, sam, we all know how terribly bad Hezbollah and the Lebanese are. We know how brave they are and how they really destroyed Israel in Lebanon 2006. That's why when Gaza was getting its ass kicked, the brave Lebanese immediately went to Gaza's offense by not doing a single thing for their fellow terrorists. By the way, where's fatboy Nazirallah? Still hiding in his bunker?
The world is tired of war.
Mike is right, Golan for normalization. But hasn't he heard that the Arab side, Syria included, has offered normalization for land in 2002 and 2007? What more are the Arabs expected to do.
I am sure that by now Israel has hundreds of balistic misiles that can reach any point on the earth that can be deployed from air sea and land.
Asad was invited many times to Jerusalem by Bibi and President Peres but he turn it down many times. Asad must make a change of direction for Syria and the ME. War is not a solution only full peace is. So maybe Asad will invite Peres to Damascus and we will get it done. Where is the Syrian Arab hospitality? Yalla!!!
actually ronald isrl provoked those attacks. in he 50's isrl went into eypt, attacked american interests so that america would go after eygpt. blaming the eygptians on terrorism, but guess what isrl was caught and america did nothing, i wonder will u drop a dirty bomb in isrl so that the americans will go after iran? lets watch and see, after all isrl is good at creating false flag operations.
Abdallah stated "israel occupies syrian land syria is not the argressor israel is" Let us remember Abdallah how Israel came by the land. It was due to repeated Syrian aggression. The deal in the souk is pretty simple. Syria wants the land? It needs to pony up big time. And the price is not in Dollars, Euros, or Yen, but in peace and normalized relations. As the show's headline states "Deal or No Deal".
All Israel needs is another war with thousands more dead. Is Israel not tired of its imperialistic ways? When will Israel learn that filling up its graveyards with the young won't bring it any closer to peace. The bellicose statements and actions made by the current government will only make to ostracize itself from the international community. Is there is nobody responsible enough, with a vision that can put an end to the senseless killing, hardship, and can finally bring peace to the area ?
the arab street hates israel but the arab dictators don't attack israel because they are being protected by that same israel + usa and some other western countries. interests are more important then democracy and human rights for USA+Israel. you only talks about Assad and Ahmadinejad but you people dont talk about the arab dicatators that are beging backed by you people.
NO WAR GUYS. ALL SIDES ARE HAPPY TO PARADE THEIR BIG GUNS
israel is going beyond opperession and defiant acts. it needs to be strongly defeated, and the peace agreement will follow that. israel is strong, but when once it is defeated, it is gone.
first of all.. the editor knows the know conversation and why assad is going, i think assad should save time and effort and just give the editor a call apparently he was already there!!.second point.. why is israel scared of scuds, there old, outdated, inaccurate and pretty much worthless.. what hizballa and syrian have in their arsenal is a lot lot worse then scuds.. and to all though jews that keep threatening to nuke syria or lebanon.. one word ..terrorists!!! with that talk you give iran and syria the right to acquire nukes to defend themselves from such terrorists
Bombing Syria with nukes would be suicide for the Israeli's. The effects of the fallout would kill many Jews & Palestieans all over Israel and beyond. You must not be jewish "H". Jews are smart, you obviously are not. A little plutonium in the air goes a long way. It doesn't care what it kills. It lasts a long time as well. Not to mention, where does a lot of israels fresh water come from, the north.
You should quit when you are ahead. Why risk losing it all. The "American" has no idea of how bad his country's future really is. Goldman Sachs is going down. When the double dip comes to the stock market look out. No jobs, none coming back. Borrowed money, borrowed time. The Romans didn't think their empire would ever end, it did. All things change, prepare for it.
Just a correction to your military information regarding Egypt abandoning Syria in the Yom Kippur war. Egypt launched it's second doomed offensive on October 14th due to Syrian plea, Sadat gave a direct order regardless of Shazly's opinion, Egypt launched it's offensive to reduce the pressure on Syria knowing we are sacrifising our army in the process (which is stupid). October 14th offensive was the turning point of the Yom Kippur war, Egypt lost 250 tanks in that day alone beside all the reserve on the west bank of suez canal were consumed in the battle, and offenive went to Israel. So much for abandoning Syria? this is just some historical facts.
we saw the IDF boys running and crying in lebanon in 2006. israeli military might runs on memories only. in a fair fight israel would not last a half a day.
Japan
Israel is a formidable military machine but it cannot rely on its supersonic jets when it comes to its other, more subtle problems, like demographics, international condemnation and the palestinians... and yeah about you're attitude -don't be bitter, try some sugar.
Nasser: You see for some reason you fanatic antisemite's do not learn history in school. Israel was not attack once or two times by all the Arab countries but THREE times and all THREE times the Arab's have lost. Maybe if you Arab's learn how to read and write then someone can write a history text book and not hear it from sources who make up history. Maybe then you would see that Jerusalem was written in the Torah thousands of years ago.
Maybe because this is not 1967 or 1973 and Syria is not the same Syria it was then. Israel would be able to destroy Syria in a day if it deemed so. Syria is playing a dirty game trying to get caught up between internal middle east feuds. Maybe it is time for Syria to take a more moderate side of the Egyptians and the Saudi's as I am sure neither country fully understand's Syria at all.
there you go,georges bush was looking for those wmd in the wrong country.darn theyre in lebanon now.
Then Israel will be the second country in History to use Nuclear weapons. If I was you Nasser I would start digging your Nuclear shelter, that is if you're that certain. Beware what you wish for.
your king is much more of an authoritarian ruler than Assad is. At least Assad still has dignity in standing in the face of Israel's agression via different means, while on the other side, your country gave up and succumbed.
and that,s why syria is supplying hezballh with modern weapons which would be used against israel in any coming conflict .hezballah militia is determined to humiliate israel and inflict heavy toll on idf . iran also is sending arms to the militia .the militia is waiting for iran,s green-light to intimidate israel and dragg it to war .
I do not care where Assad goes next.It is always easy to talk about war.War or not as long as his ass is protected he is fine with it.it is the case with every presidnt who do not care about his people. rather, his own intersts and safety.
... a nation, as its biblical prophecy of Damascus being laid to waste has not been fulfilled yet in the region's long history as of today. But that Assad could be the destined bonehead in the grand scheme of things to bring about the destruction of that great city with his shipment of Scuds for Hezbollah to hit Israeli cities with is real cause for insomnia and even trips to Pharaoh's seers for some sign of protection.
This time all the Arab countries will attack Israel. Believe you me.
"In their meeting, Assad and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak would also discuss the Palestinian reconciliation.." Blablabla nothing new. The realty is Assad knows where is the red line, he can gesticulate, playing an Arab comedy but not venturing into a war that he would not survive.
During the Yom Kippur ambush Egypt and Syria were allies against Israel and had agreed to simultaneously attack Israel. During the war as Egypt began to lose and the SAM shield could not be extended they betrayed Syria and stopped their offensive despite Syria's pleas. This respite from Egyptian advancing allowed Israel to turn their air force loose on to the Syrian tanks on the Golan thus guaranteeing Israeli victory. So why is Syria going to Egypt to beg to be protected? You would think Syria had learned their lesson but it's Syria so only Israeli F16s they will listen to so be it.
and perhaps physically.
would be welcome. would also throw a huge monkey wrench into Iran's diabolical plans. Let's make peace.
The only chance Israel will sign the NPT, or what should be the only chance, is for every Arab nation to normalize relations. That is also a crucial step in establishing any Palestinian state.
If Assad wants peace he should offer full normalization of relations in exchange for the peaceful return of the Golan Heights. From Israel's point of view, that's a deal worth taking. Syria has nothing to lose.
... that everyone has been sensitized to the SCUD issue. USA suddenly knows nothing, but that seems to be a convenient correction. The problem is, SCUDs don't grow on trees, Lebanon is completely surrounded by only one friendly country, and Hezbollah is effectively running Lebanon now. If SCUDs start flying through the night sky, there is going to be a lot of damage done to both Lebanon and Tall Chinless.
He's the iranian delivery boy trying to play statesman. He wants Israel to give him the Golan in exchange for bopkes. In reality,if he gets his dream,it would be an iranian base like the plo terrorists want an independent "state"to welcome the iranian national guard to Jerusalem. This is all an iranian way to encircle Israel from all sides...
giving those missiles to Hezbollah.
