Rabin's widow calls Netanyahu a 'nightmare' in decade-old letter
Leah Rabin: Benjamin Netanyahu is corrupt liar who is ruining everything that is good about our society.
By Amir Oren Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Israel news Yitzhak RabinLeah Rabin, the late widow of assassinated premier Yitzhak Rabin, used words such as "nightmare," "monstrosity," "corrupt" and "liar" to describe Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in letters she wrote over a decade ago that have recently been obtained by Haaretz.
In an election held the spring after Rabin's November 1995 death, Netanyahu narrowly beat his replacement, Shimon Peres, and served as prime minister from 1996-1999. Leah Rabin's letters, sent to an old friend, were written in the final months of Netanyahu's term, from fall 1998 through spring 1999. They are being published here for the first time in advance of the 14th anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin's death, which will be observed Thursday. Leah Rabin died in 2000.
In November 1998, about two weeks after the third anniversary of the assassination, Leah wrote: "I hope, pray, that the days of this government are numbered. Benjamin Netanyahu is a corrupt individual, a contentious liar who is ruining everything that is good about our society. He is breaking it to bits, and in the future, we will have to rebuild it all over."
In March 1999, she wrote in a similar vein: "We all want this nightmare to end, that this monstrosity called Netanyahu will get lost, because he exhausted our patience a long time ago."
In her letters, she expressed hope for a Labor victory in the 1999 election and sorrow over the establishment of a new party, the Center Party, on whose slate the Rabins' daughter, Dalia Rabin-Pelossof, was running for Knesset. Labor, led by Ehud Barak, did in fact win, and Rabin-Pelossof became a deputy minister in Barak's government. But in this year's election, the Rabins' son, Yuval Rabin, publicly supported Netanyahu in his rematch against Barak.
Leah also stressed in her letters that her husband had always opposed the settlements and supported giving up the West Bank.

Maybe if Leah was allowed to ride with her husband after the blanks were fired, he wouldn't have been shot at the shabak office and then transferred to another car, arriving at Ichilov 23 minutes later, with a shot to his chest, not back! Only later was he shot twice in the back, in the hospital. Filth.
Rabin was murdered at a peace rally, oslo was in the early stages he died before any of the serious talks began. Lets not assume that if Rabin had lived we would all be friends now. Rabins asassination did more for the oslo camp than any other action because out of sympathy for Rabin more of the sceptics started saying give oslo a chance. Its easy to say you don't like the current PM and at the same time Rabin on a pedestal he died without proving anything. Judge Bibi on his actions after he leaves office don't try compare him to Rabin. This is not the same as the peace with Egypt & Jordan where there was 1 man with authority to speak for everybody and what he said went and there were no complicated issues like settlements, refugees or Jerusalem. Also Israelis were united in wanting those deals. The palestinians have no leader that speaks for everybody & there are to many complicated issues so we cannot use the same format & we cannot compare the situation
has no real affect on her judgement of people; does it? she obviously saw right through netanyahu, and had him perfectly pegged. but honestly, no one with really needs her description of him to form a judgement. all they need to do is consider him and what he does; with open eyes.
Oslo didn't bring peace it brought suffering and death to both sides. Since the famous handshake on the White House lawn between Rabin & Arafat as a direct result of oslo thousands are dead ( Israelis & palestinians ) and we are no closer to peace than we were before oslo. If Rabin & Arafat wanted real, lasting peace they would have skipped the idea of timetables ( oslo was supposed to create an arab state by 1995 ) instead we should have said it takes as long as it takes starting with trust building. There would have been ups and downs, things would have stalled at times but because we were not rushing things when talks broke down they would have restarted from where we left off instead of from scratch. Peace doesn't come through documents it comes through trust and taking actions that lead to peace and the prize at the end is a bonus but real peace is the goal. As long as we work to timetables we will never have real peace, we may create an arab state but it wont bring real peace.
She is right 100% when will the voters of Israel's understand that this is the core problem. Thank you Leah
In this age of craziness, deception, extremism, and dishonesty, it is very refreshing to hear the simple truth. Thank You, Mrs. Rabin. Mr. Rabin was a war hero, a respected politician, and a trusted leader. Sadly, none of these can be said about our current PM. Mr. Rabin knew what the end game must be and worked hard to achieve it, gave his life to make it happen. This end game saw us living in peace and security, an end game that necessitated us to stop the grand Zionist dream of Greater Israel and its illegal settlements, leave the West Bank and Gaza, and proactively and enthusiastically support the establishment of a viable and democratic Palestinian state. Not for them but for us. Mr. Netanyahu is destroying our future. My fellow citizens, please wake-up before it?s too late. Peace NOW!!!
Get ready, good people, for the annual Saint Isaac Week festivities. It would appear that staunch socialist Leah Rabin's letter of unimportant personal opinion is the harbinger of this year's panoply
in attitudes towards Israel. The Oslo Accords were extremely important; then Bibi reversed that direction. From this sixty yo Christian American's perspoective, some of the greatness of Israel was lost. And the direction ever since has been questionable.
...Suha Arafat and Queen Noor said the same thing, and both called Leah their "sister". Geez, whose side was she on anyway?
Palestinian negotiating team-----14 years ago. He has not come very far---has he. Israel has retrogressed in the same period. Who to blame. The Israeli voters or those that fool them so easily. Or perhaps both. Oh I,m sorry---it is the Et al brigade--right.
You are right. perez is the most hypocite liar. He preached peace like the hungry fox who preaches care and passion for the hens in a cage
Disgusted's remarks are truly disgusting. As former neighbors of the Rabins, we find your accusations of a woonderful couple to be devastating and not true. Leave the dead alone.
She pretty much comes across like a 'nightmare' herself.
For the record, Leah Rabin, while she was alive was not the "most favorite PM's wife". Now that she is not among us, why is it important what she thought about Natanyahu Peres's wife, in contrast, kept her opinions to herself, and mostly avoided politics. Begin's wife was known for her acts of kindness to people who approached her, and I think Shulamit Shamir was also like that. Sarah N is an activist on social issues and some people are put off by that. They were ladies, Leah, I fear had the reputation of be a social climber. What can I tell ya'.
Rabin was the architect of the 6 day war. He was also the officer who obeyed Ben gurion and murdered Jews in the waters who jumped from the Altalena...a political murder. What of ther widows and loved ones? Have you published their letters.? Netanyahu also served and was wounded, He was in the sayeret matcal. His brother yoni was the hero of Entebbe. His family is as fine as any. Shame on you...yellow jounalism has found a niche among the fish mongers at haaretz.
You probably won;t publish this. I was part of a Jewish Federation mission to Israel. Leah Rabin had some members of this mission smugled a silver service from the USA and given to her when we arrived. Dates and names will be furnished if requested.
Yuval's endorsement underscores the current times. Methinks the holder of the letters is ready to take them to an auction house
The Annual Rabin Festival has begun. Ladies and Gentelemen be sure not miss another great festival. Keep tuned to your radio, tv, favorite newspapers and web sites for this years' new and improved version. Even the deceased (Leah Rabin Z"L) have woken up from their eternal slumber to join in.
If only he was a nightmare we could wake-up mornings without the feeling an impending doom generated by a covey of frightful and frightened reactionaries ensconced in the Knesset and government.
....why so many Israeli citizens would vote (and that for the second time !!) a man into office, who clearly was a leading figure behind the campaign of hatred and incitement, which finally led to the killing of PM Rabin. I wonder, can they still look in the mirror in the morning...???
She was intelligent, rationale and courageous ,but is a mystery that she understood all very late when ,after the right wing fanatics killed her husband ,in head with the demagogues Bibi,Arik ,Tzipi,Limor ,she saw the real face of Israel and she said :"I would wish to go away from here".But the last and the more disgusting of Rabin's killers is the arch hypocrite Peres who make today public relation for Bibi ,lieberman &co.for likud policy and their crimes.
Who cares what Leah Rabin thought? Why is her opinion any more important than any other "letter to the editor"? She was not an elected official, didn't hold any official position, and her claim to fame was that she brought down a Prime Minister of Israel with an illegal activity. Who cares what she thought?
By not having a referendem about Peace it was Rabin himself who created our ongoing nightmare. The country just wasn't ready for this change. Finally we have a government who won't divide the city of Jerusalem and tells the world.
Leah Rabin is a self-absorbed leftist. She should shut up already. Sorry for her husbands death but Labor ALMOST DESTROYED ISRAEL.
It is not nice to talk ill of the dead, but in Lea Rabin case I am only stating the truth. Lea was a self centered nasty woman. I had a few chances to meet the Rabins in the late 1968 when Rabin arrived in Washington to serve as the Israeli Ambassador. After that I had a few other chances to meet them, one thing was always consistent was Lea's sour personality. With time when Rabin became Prime Minister Rabin took to the bottle and would make a spectacle of himself on US national TV after one of this spectacles I called some people in Israel to ask if he is sick or on drugs, I was told that he drinks heavily. One of the worse spectacles was on a Sunday, if my memory serves me right it was on a program called "Face the nation." The interviewer would ask a question and Rabin will respond with a bunch of unrelated nonsense. Unfortunately it happened on more then one occasion so please take what lea said with a grain of salt.
Lea Rabin was 100% right .Regardless of her motives Nataniahu is serious treat to Israel . It will take long long time to recover from the damage he caused.
This sad anniversary also brings to mind the forensic and other weird circumstances of Rabin's murder.
The sad reality is that no one understands that there are those in Israel that don't believe in peace, those who have killed Rabin. Netanyaho to no ones surprise is amongst those that doesn't believe in peace. The question then, how could the Israeli's elect him. What were they thinking or is it the majority of them don't want peace either. IF so, stop blaming the palestinians. I hope that the Israelis and the Jews are aware that what they had to suffer and endure should not be what they are going to practice on the palestinians. It seems that Abusive Children turn out to be Abusive Fathers. I sure hope and I am sure that there are many Jews who don't approve of the Israeli government aggression against the Palestinians and I am sure they don't agree or approve of Netanyaho, the extremist. One who believes in the God of Avraham, jesus, or Mohamad cannot be killing people for any reason.
Who was the lady, aside of being the wife of Bibi's political rival? Why should we relate to her opinion at all? Was she a politician? Did she study a political science? was she known for her powerful intellect? No. She was just a private person. So with all due respect, let's drop it.
It is a shame that you dig out dirt that has been washed away long ago. One could say the same things (Leah says about PM Netanyahoo) about Leah herself. Esther
Bibi's ethics are well known. The old saying, that when he is in power, the Likud is in opposition is very telling. He has no loyalty to his party or constituents or colleagues. He has put himself and his political advancement on the top of the agenda, and ignored the true interest of the country putting it in danger. Too bad we have to delve in leah Rabin's old letters to confirm what we should clearly see now. Continued settlement, defaming Goldstone, besmirching J Street, are all vintage Bibi shtick.
A fact that the left rather forget on Jerusalem Day and on Rabin memorial day . Rabin supported the jewish settlement of the biblical heartland and opposed givin'up Judea and Samaria .
Very insightful. Netanyahu's actions speak strongely. Leah Rabin assessed Netanyahu's leadership skills accurately.
How right she was. If she only new that Barak and a host of labor ministers (along with the usual likud riff-raff - at least the ones that didn't flee to Kadima) would become his partner in crime.
She speaks what most of the world Jews think. She speaks what 95% of the non-jewish world thinks. When will the Israelis see this?
Hmmm ... all this from the woman who, in violation of Israeli law, kept foreign bank accounts, as a result of which her husband had to resign his position as party leader, and give up his candidacy for prime minister.

This sounds like it's being taken out of context. From here, it sounds like Leah Rabin was a huge Socialist who favored the continuation of things like Histadrut, oppressive foreign trade taxation, and the kibbutz movement. Netanyahu worked and is working to overhaul a rather large amount of the system to make Israel more capitalist and therefore a much more attractive place for foreign investment, which is in large part what led to the tech boom in Israel. It has nothing to do with Bibi's abilities as a leader, but rather whether or not you support Israel as a Socialist or Capitalist state.
People voted for Kadima and got Bibi. There's something wrong in the system, not only in the man, as C.G. Jung said...
Simply - in my opinion, she is just right! And i am not so optimistic about rebuilding all over in the future!
