Police officer convicted in prisoner suicide
A police officer was convicted yesterday of negligence in the June 2005 death of a prisoner who committed suicide in the Rishon Letzion police detention center. Officer Michael Indig, who interned the prisoner when he arrived from court on May 24, was told he was suicidal, but locked him in a cell without categorizing him as such.
The prisoner's state of mind was not registered on his detainee card because, contrary to regulations, he had not been brought before the patrol department head. On June 3, the suspect killed himself while an officer was out smoking.
The suit was conducted by the Justice Ministry's Police Investigation Department. The patrol department head and his deputy were brought before a disciplinary tribunal for their responsibility in the incident.
