Police grill lawyer over witness tampering claim
Moshe Sohemi is representing Shlomi Mizrahi, on trial for the murder of Hai Ben Shimon in May.
One of Israel's top criminal lawyer, Moshe Sohemi, was interrogated under caution for five hours last week, on suspicion of obstruction of justice in a murder trial in which he acts for the defense.
It remains unclear whether he will be called in for a second round of questioning.
Sohemi is representing Shlomi Mizrahi, on trial for the murder of Hai Ben Shimon in May.
According to the indictment, the two were involved in a physical brawl at a Rehovot night club, during the course of which Ben Shimon swore at Mizrahi.
Mizrahi met Ben Shimon at a neighbor's home some time later, and stabbed him several times in the chest and abdomen, causing his death.
Police suspect Sohemi has met with a prosecution witness and the father of the accused, and played them a tape of a confrontation between the accused and another witness, thus trying to influence the first witness's testimony.
Police are also investigating whether there have been phone conversations between Sohemi and the witness, despite the defense lawyer being banned from contacting prosecution witnesses.
When approached for comment, Sohemi would only say that the information was incorrect. The police declined to comment.
