Palestinian women smuggled into Tel Aviv for day of fun
Israeli women bring 12 Palestinian women, 4 children out to eat in Jaffa restaurant, swimming in the Mediterranean, and home via Jerusalem.
By Jonathan LisA group of Israeli women smuggled 12 Palestinian woman and four children, among them a year-old baby, into Tel Aviv for a day of fun about two weeks ago. The women, among them writers Ilana Hammerman and Klil Zisapel, picked up the women from their villages, following two earlier meetings with them.
Avoiding the security forces at West Bank checkpoints, they took the women out to eat in a restaurant in Jaffa, swimming in the Mediterranean, and took them home via Jerusalem where they could see the Old City walls from afar.

Hammerman undertook a similar trip in which she brought three teenage Palestinian girls to Tel Aviv for the day, which she described in an article in Haaretz Magazine in May. Following publication of the article, the Legal Forum for the Land of Israel demanded that the attorney general investigate Hammerman for smuggling illegal residents into Israel.
After the complaint was filed, peace activists with whom Hammerman is acquainted approached her with the idea of doing another trip, but more extensive this time.
Hammerman and her friends then began to seek women in West Bank villages who would be willing to take a chance on getting caught to take part in such a trip, Hammerman said yesterday and eventually, the 28 Israeli and Palestinian women and children made their way into Israel.
"We all came, we met the women, we took them in our own cars. We pulled a fast one on the army," Hammerman said.
Most of the Palestinians had never seen the sea or visited certain holy places. None of them had permits to enter Israel.
"We passed the checkpoints in our cars, knowingly breaking the laws of entry into Israel," the Israeli women wrote in an ad published in the Hebrew weekend edition of Haaretz.
"We don't recognize the legality of the entry law into Israel, which allows every Israeli and every Jew to move freely throughout most of the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean, and denies this right to the Palestinians, to whom this land also belongs."
The ad also said the Israeli women had been greatly privileged "to experience in our country that lives by its sword one of the most beautiful and exciting days in our lives; to get to know brave Palestinian women who love life and the joy of life, and to spend time with them and to be free with them if only for one day."
Hammerman said the Israeli women wanted to spark debate in Israeli society. "None of us are anarchists, yet we broke the law. That is a symbolic act," she said.
Hammerman said the possible two-year prison term for smuggling people into Israel did not deter her.
Zisapel said yesterday that the women had wanted to "show the absurdity of this situation, of this law and what it does. The wall and the checkpoints do not keep illegal aliens, and certainly not terrorists, out of Israel."
Zisapel said some of the women wanted to see the sea, some the shops or the high-rises. One said she just wanted to breath.

It all began with EVE ,these women rule and i hope they become good friends
You gotta love the chutzpah. Next thing you know people will cross into Judea and Shomron an build outposts - Oh yes, that's a threat to democracy!
Good on you
A wonderful gesture, and they are to be highly commended. Inevitably there are the paranoid and racist comments in this talk-back, but that is par for the course when racial barriers are under threat. I am quite sure that lightly clad women in a heat wave can be seen to be devoid of explosive devices, and of course the reverse argument is true, that the Israeli women might have been IDF spies, but hell, a bit of trust on both sides is just what is needed. Great that you printed this, lets hear it for Israeli women with consciences!!!
This is yet another unlawful and ironic side of the conflict.
NOT...
Haaretz keeps using three drunk girls sitting on a wall as demonstrative of night life in Tel Aviv. Why not show the inside of a popular club or a street full of revellers. It's doing a great city a diservice to the many readers of the site who do not live in Israel.
I also smuggle Palestinian teenage girls (18 and over) into Israel, but my motives are different, I like to take them clubbing, get them drunk, have some nargillah and then go to bed with them. So I'm a human rights activist too, in my own way. Am Israel Hai.
This is the way to do it, this is the way to start a positive thing like that.Human interaction between intelligent people on both sides is extremely important to change the status quo in the Land of Peace , the Land of Prophets and the Land of the three Great Religions.
ive in war, we don´t. what you give is what you get and what you call is what will come upon you
according to arguments of the Female Genius of the Left ,Mrs.Hammermann. Away with controls at Ben Gurion ,Mrs.Hammerman loves life !
These people want to kill Jews, why do we need to beg them to like us ?? Let them find fun in saudi arabia.
Everybody needs a little fun now and then ! But the security semms to have taken a day off.
I am sure this Mrs. Hammerman is a lady swimming in riches and wealth and wishes to share it and on top of everything become a celebrity, the arab women she really does not care for the only thing she cares for is to become known. I am sorry she chose these women as an object..
Arizona sees the need to prevent illegals from stealing American jobs and adding security risks. Why is Israel judged differently fot trying to prevent terror attacks.
Un grand merci pour ce que vous avez fait. Thanks a lot for what you have done.
"The Wall" came up because of terror acts the Palestinians inflict on the Jewish side ... long ago people used to go to Gaza or Hebron and shop or sit for a good meal in the market ... but they "killed" that all - today stupid women "trick-smuggle" the army barricades that protect their children ....how foolish do you get ???????
There is no air in the West Bank? Oh those eeville Zionists, stealing all the air!
She wanted to be free from the oppressive village she is destined to live and die, in which every move and thought is monitored. She wanted to be free to roam without restriction.
The White, and Jewish freedom riders in America brought freedom to the South.
These Israeli ladies are the type of people I once believed Israel to be.
Kudos for your bravery! Way to go!
As long as these women are not spies or working for Hamas terror, then of course bring them in and show them the Israeli democracy .A good PR exercise for the cause of Israel
"As long as they are not..working for Hamas terror..." Maybe you will do the security checks, moron.
These boobs are wrong when they say that security measures have not stopped terrorists, they certainly have and this account can inspire a suicide bomber to get into Israel.
Israeli Jews are not allowed to enter Palestinian controlled territories. Some half-truths, some outright lies, and we've got ourselves "peace activists".
exactly everybody likes marters ( they are dead ) but they take other people with them.
... far better than these women who visit the West Bank on a regular basis. And where do you project our knowledge upon us from? Miami? New Jersey? Montreal?
and then how settlers enter in villages and vandalize palestinian homes, is that a lie?
... and what do you call those half a million thugs you planted in our midst?
The consequences that arise from taking any action, good or bad, lie squarely on the shoulders of those who act. On the human level, it would seem that this was meant to be a good action. However, we don’t know that this is good. We don’t know what will eventually come about as a result of this escapade. Who are these Palestinian women who so readily agreed to be smuggled into Israel and who are their fathers, brothers, uncles? Will these women report back on how easy it was to fool the security at the checkpoints, on the locations they were taken to, on the fact that Israeli women (soft- hearted and maybe even naive) can be used and manipulated to infiltrate Israel? We simply don’t know so praising or condemning is a futile exercise. Only time will tell if this specific action was worth defying the law.
you clearly are working for the israel government or the settler movement. definitevely you don't want a fair solution to this conflict
we have almost forgotten israelis can be humans thanx to these people
just kidding. who are you to judge others on being "human" or not... dbag
You probably live in a bad-wishful-never-land for israel , but if you finally , if ever , wake up , you will see a nicest country in the whole world called ISRAEL . But again , you might continue to sleep and enjoy your wishful dream . By the way , Israel took one of the top eight places in the happinness index in the world .
What would happen to Israelis that are secreted into Pal territory? If they aren't saved by the Pal security service, they are torn asunder. So, exactly who can't be human beings? I would suggest you look in the mirror and see not only the horrors of Pal society, both extra murally but inter se, and Arab society in general. There is no more violent, intolerant and frankly less productive People's on earth than Muslims. Why is that?
7 million werent human until this? You must have some really bad views regarding humanity what are your views regarding the rest of the world then? Have you met the remaining approx 6,999,984 to make such a brash statement?
Thee women have shown what can/should be. HOPE!
"We don't recognize the legality of the entry law into Israel" so they pick and choose which laws they choose to obey. hmmm....sounds like charedim
Everyone picks and chooses which laws they should obey, whether its consciously or not. Do you ever break the speed limit while driving? Cross a street when the crosswalk sign is red? Not one single person in this world does not break a law periodically.
What a good move by these sensible Israeli women. What is now needed is a system whereby Israelis can bring Palestinian friends into Israel for visits. The Israelis would be responsible for their guests and the guests would undertake to behave as guests. Such a system would be a marvellous move to let Palestinians see a real country in operation. Many of them would already have seen muslim countries in operation, as I have. Believe me, Israel can only win this competition. How about some of that famous 'jewish intelligence' being used in this situation?
Establishing links betweem Israelis and Palestinians will help forge peace. These Palestinian women have seen that Israeli people are like them: they have kids, they work hard to have a flourishing economy, they enjoy life... They will have a positive image of Israel to bring back with them, something that will make them aspire to peace. This is so much better than the image of Israel they have in the occupied Palestinian territory: violentm heavily armed settlers, soldiers blocking circulation within the West Bank with checkpoints...
Sure such links will help them to see what they lost, when they decided tu rule themselves through the PA, and will have great nostalgy for the post 1967 days up to 1995
Considering the breaches of what is viewed as "modesty" in Tel Aviv, it would seem that these young women are returning with a "shtifat eynayim" that, when it gets to their sisters could put them in trouble with the authorities--boys and girls holding hands?! Resaurants that sell "basahr lavan"! All that and other sites that are regarded as not very Moslem, or not very religious could make them the target of the Hamas Thought Police. I could think of better ways of enlightening Palestinian Arab women from Gaza than breaking the law. Whatwith the Hamas regime holding on to it's pieties . . . these young women will be in a whole lot of trouble back home.
You should go and have a voda tonic in one of Ramallah's numerous bars. It's full of scantily clad Palestinina women.
the women were from the West Bank, not Gaza. to pull such a trick on the Gaza border is slightly more difficult. Hows about you going to enjoy Ramallah for a great night out? There's alcohol, live music and dance clubs. but don't try to do that in the Haredim quarters in Jerusalem, or the mind police will turn up
Keeps terrorists out. Obviously it also keeps peaceful Palestinians out. These stupid women will, if they continue, sooner or later, manage to bring a terrorist into Israel.
It's your attitude that is responsible for terrorism past and present.
My heart shines when I see such graceful acts which remins all of us that not everyone in israel is a settler or a hard right-winger. Bravo to these brave women who helped children see the sea for the first time in their life. Such women are the honour of our Jewish people.
... And more intelligent then Abass too?
Since when is he considered intelligent?
... And more intelligent then Abass too?
Not to mention the security Risk this idiotic woman undertook, such as smuggling potential would be suicide bomber into Israel they are so proud of themselves that they boast in print about braking the law. Well dummies, you just confessed in print, just because you didn't get caught when you broke the law doesn't mean that you all couldn't be prosecuted now and use this article as evidence against you as a confession.
But they didnt actually blow up did they. In fact the number of Palestinian woman who've entered Israel and not blown is really rather high...which will probably suprise people like you.
These brave women from both sides are willing to take all the risks associated with that wonderful human experience. Obviously the positive outcome way outweighs those risks according to their way of thinking and they are absolutely right.
It is always easy to be aggressive and cruel as it is human nature. It takes bravery and effort to change ones state of mind and become peaceful and interact with another human being on the basis that they are one rather than 2 different types of people. These women showed empathy, thus showing sparks of enlightenment.
Before the wall was built. It was called the "midnight run". Leave the WB in a van at sundown, take the back roads, and you're in the nightclub in Tel Aviv by midnight. I think it was a "different type" of terrorism they were interested in.....
The photo depicts drunk women smoking and having what looks like champagne by the curbside. Man they really went all out, got trashed, and obviously languished about the 'suffering' etc. with a brewski and perhaps a little 'more'.
It is indeed an absurd law imposed by even a more absurd occupation on the Palestinian natives depriving them from simple pleasures like visitng their own country and enjoying the scenery and breathing fresh air. What a cruel and barbaric occupation that deprives small school children from going to the beach or visiting their own places of worship while allowing foreigners to come and settle the land? It's high time people realize the absurdity of the Israeli occupation of Palestine
i israel. it is not thier or your country.
If you eradicated terrorism, this could be an everyday happning. The ball is in your court.
remember that not long ago people in Israel were subject to terrorist attacks almost in a daily basis. Which country in the world would do different. Now the situation seems to have changed. I can only salute these brave israelis...
the Pals arabs leaders do not want peace since they have a commitment to destruction
Does it include Tel Aviv?
When was the last time a Jew was able to pray openly on Temple Mount? Who destroyed Joseph's Tomb? What a cruel and barbaric occupation indeed that prevented Jews from visiting the Kotel for 40 years and destroyed Jewish and Christian sites of worship. It's high time people realised the absurdity of hte Jordanian occupation of Israel from 1948 - 1967.
History does not really bear out this view. Israel has consistently been attacked in one form of terror or another since its inception, decades before the first settlement was even a twinkle in anyone's eye. DavidNigelBraham is right. Had Arafat taken the state offered to him in 1993, this would have been happening for the last 17 years. Rather, Israel gets bombs and missiles, rained on it.
you seem to have forgotten that long before settlements the arabs have been killing Jews in Israel...before '48 and it continues today. What makes you think they will behave any differently if there was no settlement issue...then it would be something else. They have turned their big bulbous noses up to every offer made by Israel..it started in '48 and continues til today. If you cannot understand that they want death to Israel not peace with Israel you are as backwards as they are. These Israeli women who wined and dined and danced all night with these palestinians did a foolish and arrogant thing...thankfully they did not bring harm to Israel but by showing these women how to get into Israel secretly they have caused great harm to security. If something happens the blood is on them and I hope they go to jail for the rest of their lives.
Just cos you dont want them to be doesnt make it so. This is stolen Palestinian lands which will one day be returned to their LEGAL owners no matter how much hissing you do.
Well civil disobedience is fine so long as you pay the price. However with the liberal bias in the press and prosecutors office, there is little to no chance that these law breakers will pay the price. By the way, the palestiniain women can visit Jordan as they wish and see the world and the sea of Aqaba so this is just a packaged soap opera of the left. Israel has every right to regulate the entry of non-citizens into its territory and palestinians, who have learned since pre- nursery that jews are devils and murderers, would not be my first choice for an ideal target tourist community. We have suffered enuf death and mayhem by allowing in palestinians. Tho most are just normal people, the killers slip in thru the policy too. If these israeli women want to change the law let them run for parliament or convince the electorate of the justice of their position. Otherwise they should pay the full penalty for their violation of Iisraeli law.
They could end up bringing in a suicide bomber and not realize it. These woman should be imprisoned for a few years
This act of human sympathy will foster love, not hate.
it's so good to hear stories like this, it just shows that pals and jews can live together in harmony, alot of us have always known this, so can someone tell the politicians, can they show them?.
all those that voted against me only prove one thing, there are evil people out there against peace, god will punish you for killing innocent people, and god does not tolerate those that go against the torah's beliefs.
Israelis like these are the ones that make Israel a special place. Congratulations to all Israelis and Palestinians women alike. You are the best. A movie should be made about this experience.
it's so nice to hear a positive story about interactions between Israelis and Palestinians for a change.
breathe! not breath, please fix, thanks =)
Hammerman says we are a nation that lives by the sword. I remind you of Golda's comment: "We can forgive you for killing our sons, but we can never forgive you for making us kill your sons!"
Don't bother, Persian jews are free to leave Iran if they wish to do so. Go ask Persian jews residing in Israel what they are, they will most likely respond: 1. Iranian, 2. Jewish, 3. maybe Israeli.
how sad your remarks are. Reminds me of the German Jews who loved Germany uber alles. They got paid back in spades for their love of country just like the Iranian Jews in Iran will get paid back. They are probably petrified to say anything against ahmadinjad and the crazy mullahs that run the country. Pathetic post Mr. Iranian...very pathetic.
That's what being a Jewish woman is all about.
Did this young Palestinian woman find the air in Palestine stifling?? And if so, why?
And illegal smuggle devout Jews into Nablus so they can peacefully pray at Joseph's Tomb in the daytime, or take them through the bazaars of Al-Khalil/Hevron, where it is off-limits for Israeli citizens both ways? Or perhaps go even further and smuggle them into Lebanon so they can enjoy Beirut's quality nightlife, or other places where there entry is unequivocally barred on the basis of their Israeli nationality?
They did not ask permission, and they certainly are not peaceful.
Workers without permits are regularly smuggled into Israel to work. And guess what - there are no bombings if you notice. They just want to work and the Israeli employers want the cheapest labour. What' s new? Carry on spending millions on the wall. There will always be another option.
Isn't it a FACT though that since this wall the 'bombings' have been totally reduced.. Unfortunately realistically a separation is necessary!
1. At the chutzpa, stupidity, and selfishness of these women => They broke the law and should be prosecuted. 2. At the pathetic level of security provided by the IDF. => Whoever is in charge of the relevant roadblocks should be relieved of duty -- immediately. A full investigation should be started. If anyone can go around them, why bother with roadblocks and fences at all?
So "Israel belongs to pals" ? True face odf the Israeli "Peace Camp" revealed in all its ugliness
this is not smuggling, this is their country so....
Apparently living in the greater Tel Aviv bubble makes people stupid... If these ladies are so happy playing peace with happy Palestinians why don't they move to Rammallah or Gaza City... I would LOVE to see what the Palestinian men think of them and what kind of life they are intended to live according to the the Palestinian standar. Sadly but pathetic...
It is the women in Gaza who suffer the most and do the most to try to calm their suffering co-citizens. It is therefore not too surprising that in Israel it is the women who are attempting to lead the nation to sanity.
I felt such powerful mixed emotions reading this article. Are they all mad? Are they all the bravest women in the world? Why involve children? Is it so easy to avoid the army? Fear for their safety. Fear for mine. Can women and mothers find the way out of this conflict? Are they dangerously naive? Am I?
....and a wonderful act of empathy and humanity!
So, if this were the US, and these women had sm smuggled Mexicans from Tijuana into the US for a day of fun in San Diego, with no papers or other documentation, they would not be facing arrest. I say, 3 weeks in Neve Tirza should be a good cure for this kind of stupidity.
... a response to the occupation.... and to terrorism as well....Both
and teach them how to later teach others who may have less harmless ideas to do the same. Sea after peace.
What a relief from the daily accounts of demolitions, harassments, killings and the arrogance of an occupier. Kudos to Hammerman and Zisapel. There may be hope, after all.
These Israeli women are what Judaim is about. They should be the leaders of Israel/Palestine.
I dont want a Israel like that. I always supported Israel but had never knew that we have even deprived them this kinds of basic rights. Israel should abolish all walls and a resolution of this conflict should be bring soonest possible so that we can know whethere there will be a one nation for two people or two nation for two people. Netanyahu act honestly.
It is so sad that these Jewish women believe they are doing a mitzvah by bringing Arab women sympathetic to the PLO cause into Israel. It is a shame...they should all go to Jordan or another Arab country that borders the sea. It is not brave what these women did...It is only very brave and honorable to protect Israel and the world has only great respect and awe of Jewish strength like during Cast lead!
Yeah the whole world has respect for Israel's maschismo? What planet are you on? Are you still a teenager? Instead of worrying about Jewish violence you should be concerned about Jewish humanity. In fact, like the women of this story you should get over the whole Jew and Arab labels and just stick to the Humanity bit.
I understand they didn't risk anything themselves by going into restricted areas just put others at risk. Why don't they go further and get Gilad Shalit out. If true I hope they go to jail as I feel very safe in Tel Aviv because of our army. Before the borders were closed I heard the bombs go off in Tel Aviv and didn't feel at all safe.
Better security is necessary. I don't suggets jail time for these particular smugglers but I do expect the Arabs to be stopped at the border-demographic and security/terrorism reasons. Just one wrong person and there could be a distaster.
i believe if peace will come all israeli and arab palestinians will enjoy free movement for a better understanding and a better future for all people in the region. but as long as there is a threat over israel by hamas and extremists the laws should be rspected.
In the end, if we are to be saved at all, it will be the women who save us from ourselves.
It is not impossible to reach Israel, for someone who is willing. The purpose of checkpoints is not to prevent suicide bombers, but to put political, pressure on Palestinians (i.e. checkpoints are politically-motivated). It has been made very hard for a normal Palestinian to make it to work, hospital, or school in Jerusalem. But, it never stopped a suicide bomber. Fortunately, there has been no bombings in Israel recently, and that is due to the lack of will on part of Hamas, and due to the secret agreement between Israel and Hamas, with no relation to checkpoints. I hope Israel and the PA will reach a similar agreement in the near future.
Secret agreements? Do you think Obama was born in Kenya and that the US gov't shot JFK as well?

Stupid women who have nothing better to do,what will they do next, smuggle terrorists. These idiotic and conceited women need to be locked up.
Kol Hakavod to these brave women!
Knowing each other and making friend are the real way to bring peace to the aria. People have to impose their own opinion in our stupid leaders who have fixedimges about our neighbours --
Were these truly friendly people or plants to spy out the land for possible targets. We are taught to show compassion and acceptance, they are taught hate and intolerance from early childhood, 3 years old they put a toy AK 47s in their children hands. I hope I am wrong, really.
What will the haters do. Palestinian women and children among you! Surely you must do something to cleans yourself of their presence. Hopefully, the terrorism disease will not break out among the citizens if Israel. Maybe you should institute a mass vaccination program.
Completely stupid. No point. Jail them.
The human side of people in this conflict pops its head for a short while. Let us hope there is more of these confidence-building and refreshing human interactions.
first i must say that i say all along that not all palestinian or israelis are bad, there are many many good people on both sides and those people will one day overcome the bad people on both sides and then and only then will peace be upon us all.
Another report recently, of children taken to the beach (near Haifa? at Caesarea?) -- equally poignant and also an essentially female effort.
Is it because they come from the crazy Muslims? Is it because we know that if the tables were turned, there is no way they could or would do this for us? Or are they simply as powerless as we are to change crazy politico-religionists and create a political structure that behaves as if it were made by and for humans?
These remarkable women, and many other Israelis like them, are Israel's best hope for survival.
Shame on them
The real fun is in disseminating the knowledge how to sneak into Israel. Something useful in planning theft and terror attacks.
These women should be arrested. They knowingly and willingly tried to outsmart the army..and they succeded. They are a true security risk and should be jailed!! The only thing they did was point out a flaw in the security system, which needs to be fixed. Thank you, now they should riot in a jail cell.
I would like to congratulate those brave women.
I would like to congratulate those brave women.
Hopefully, one day it will be.
Those women should be jailed, if it was not for the security forces and those who died - (just because a Jew walked Temple mount )- and the Wall, the number of suicide bombers whom still today try to enter Israel coming from the West Bank and Gaza would still today be a reality - or those women believe that the suicide bombers were just a plot by the Israeli gov to build a wall?, in what planet do they live?. Beyond belief, what would happen if someone they loved died as a consequence of an Israeli smugling a bomber - I hope the security forces pay more attention, because unless they close the loophole, it will be used by idiots like those women - shame on them. They dont care for those inocents that died not long ago - ARREST THEM AND THROW AWAY THE KEY.
The only disgrace is the state of your reactionary, paranoid mind. Go swallow the key and choke.
the Pals brought and used a suicide belt. I'm not supportive of breaking the law but am supportive of making contacts that foster human to human interaction and perhaps indirectly affect attitudes. The suicide belt scenario is not a ridiculous possibility. There continues to be both incitement and pockets of Hamas, hence, sadly, the law's make sense.
Not the continuing extension of Plan Dalet which has gone since 1948.
These women have the right to work through the democratic process to try to change the law. They do not get to decide what law applies and what law doesn't. This is illegal and anti-democratic. They should be brought before the courts.
These settlers do not get to decide what law applies and what law doesn't. This is illegal and anti-democratic. They should be brought before the courts for living in illegal settlements on stolen, occupied land out of Israel.

But go ahead ,stroll to Ramallah ,perhaps they don't tear you apart . Or go to an "Arab" village in Israel and say you want to live there.. Go ahead ,I'd love to read about it in "Haaretz"
A peace-loving woman and a good Jew. Cheers to her.
