PA waging diplomatic war over Temple Mount

Fayyad tells foreign ambassadors to protest to Israel and 'demand a change in its behavior' on the mount.

By Liel Kyzer and Barak Ravid Tags: Jerusalem Israel news Palestinians Temple Mount

The Palestinian Authority has been waging a diplomatic campaign against Israel for the past two weeks over what it terms "provocations" on the Temple Mount.

At a closed briefing for foreign ambassadors last Tuesday, PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad warned that the situation on the mount could quickly deteriorate into a "loss of control" by the PA and asked them to submit official protests to Israel over its "provocations" there, a senior Israeli government official said.

That prompted Sweden, which holds the European Union's rotating presidency, to ask Jerusalem to work to calm the situation during this week's Jewish holidays.

While the PA has always conducted intensive diplomatic activity with regard to Jerusalem, it has previously focused on issues such as Israeli construction in East Jerusalem or the eviction of Palestinian families from homes in the city's Arab neighborhoods. But following the clashes on the Temple Mount last Sunday, the eve of Yom Kippur, it began warning the international community about the possibility of a conflagration there.

According to reports that have reached Israel about Fayyad's meeting with the ambassadors, the PA prime minister described last Sunday's clashes as "an assault by extremist religious settlers on the Temple Mount compound" and said it was "a provocation planned in advance that was aimed at sabotaging the peace process and derailing [U.S.] President [Barack] Obama's peace initiative."

Warning that the situation on the mount was flammable and could swiftly deteriorate, he added, "I remind you that this is where the Al-Aqsa Intifada began, after [Ariel] Sharon's visit" to the mount in September 2000. "The Palestinians' popular response stems from the Israeli aggression, and we are liable to lose control over events."

He therefore urged the ambassadors to protest to Israel and "demand a change in its behavior" on the mount.

Fayyad's description of last Sunday's events bears no resemblance to Israel's version. According to senior Israeli officials, members of a right-wing Jewish organization did indeed declare their intent to ascend the mount on the morning of September 27, but police prevented them from even entering the Temple Mount compound.

Shortly thereafter, however, a group of French tourists - most of them Christians - came to the mount for a previously arranged tour, and hundreds of Palestinian worshipers, who had apparently been awaiting the right-wing activists, began hurling stones at them. Police responded with tear gas, and in the ensuing clashes, 30 people were wounded - half of them policemen and half Palestinians.

Nevertheless, Fayyad's plea drew a swift response from the United States and many EU countries, all of which demanded explanations of last Sunday's events from Israeli officials.

The United States was satisfied by Israel's explanation and dropped the matter. However, several European countries - headed by Sweden, whose relationship with Israel has also been deteriorating - sent worried messages demanding that Israel work to calm the situation.

The tensions reached a peak last Tuesday, when the Palestinians told several foreign embassies that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intended to accompany right-wing activists to the East Jerusalem village of Silwan to dedicate a new tunnel.

In fact, Netanyahu was merely planning to treat his senior aides to dinner at a nearby restaurant - an event that was ultimately canceled due to a heavy work load. Nevertheless, both American officials in Washington and the U.S. Embassy in Israel contacted the Prime Minister's Office to demand explanations for the alleged tunnel dedication, while senior officials in Sweden's Foreign Ministry demanded similar explanations of Israel's ambassador in Stockholm.

Possible new clashes

Police are now preparing for a possible new round of clashes today, when tens of thousands of Jewish worshipers are expected to come to the Western Wall to hear the traditional priestly blessing.

There were several violent incidents in the Old City Sunday, after the Islamic Movement urged Arab demonstrators to come to the Temple Mount to "defend Al-Aqsa [Mosque]."

In one incident, at about 10 A.M., Arabs from northern Israel and East Jerusalem began throwing stones and bottles at police on Motta Gur St., near the Old City's Lions Gate. Two policemen were lightly wounded and five demonstrators were arrested.

Yesterday afternoon, Arabs threw stones and Molotov cocktails at a Border Police roadblock near the Shuafat refugee camp. The incident produced no casualties.

Also yesterday, police arrested the deputy head of the Islamic Movement, Sheikh Kamel Khatib, and Hatem Abdel Qader, who is in charge of Jerusalem for the PA's ruling Fatah party, on suspicion of incitement to violence.

A court released them on bail on condition that they stay out of the Old City for 15 days.

This morning, police plan to restrict entry to the Temple Mount to Muslim worshipers aged 50 or older - a move that has in the past proven effective in preventing clashes on the mount. It will also bar Jews and tourists from entering the mount, to forestall friction with Muslim worshipers.

Thousands of policemen and border policemen will be stationed in the Old City and throughout both East and West Jerusalem to protect the tens of thousands of visitors who are expected to flock there today.

Some reasonable status quo!! When Jews went to pray at the Kotel, they did so with the prospect of getting hit in the head with a stone thrown from above Seems you forgot how the Imam's incited the Muslim worshiper's on Friday, telling them to go forth and Jihad in addition to praying If you really think it's so reasonable, don a headcloth, worship at the Kotel (women's side) and take your chances Don't forget to take a kova pladah, might reduce the impact of the thrown rocks

When you mean desecration, you mean the fact that they're allowed there I'm assuming. The area is not a squalor and it is maintained. If your question is asking how much longer are the Arabs going to be allowed at this location, well, I'd have though you being a believer would know. It's when the Temple is rebuilt, however isn't that something God's supposed to do? Obviously the Lord isn't too happy at the fact that Israel has destroyed the native indegenious population of this land being the Palestinians and their artifacts. Therefore, GOD will in no way rebuild this temple as long as his "Chosen children" continue to act like spoiled brats.

They must be made to pay taxes for the right to pray at the Mount Temple which is the holiest of holly places to the Jews as Muslims do to other religions in their countries. They can?t wait for a reason to have blood flow in the streets again. ?Popular response? my **s , the Intifada was a well orchestrated occurrence by AraFart himself and now the Arab immigrants calling themselves ?Palestinians? try to get some more sympathy from the world ? stop the madness. No more peace talks until Israel is recognized as a Jewish state with Jerusalem as the undivided capital city. There is no point to talking with people that do not recognize your right to exist.

The comments of #21"Abu Firas Al Qudsi"shows why there has been no peace over the last 60+ years & why its prospects are so dim.Muslim Arabs have shown a total refusal to accept any relationship other religions have to Jerusalem or any holy site in Israel. This narrow & bigoted view extends well beyond Muslim extremists as some western leaders seem to believe but is part of Islamic belief itself. The Koran is filled with anti-Jewish & anti-Christian language, language which would be described as bigoted &racist if used outside that volume. The so-called "moderate" PA has picked up on this, claiming that there is no Jewish historic relationship to Jerusalem(which by logical extension would include no Christian relationship as well)If the PA leadership is unwilling to acknowledge the religious connection Jews have with their holiest site, how can we believe that they are sincere in accepting Israel. They continue to deny it as the historic home of the Jews,so where is tolerance

Dear Josh, the Arabs pray there daily, no troubles, no problems. On my first trip to Israel back in the 70's I wondered around the inners of the Al Aqsa mosque and had no trouble. The troubles today are not based on any absence of freedom to pray peacefully as Moslems, but is politics. Any Pal leader worth his salt, knows that this issue is a spark point for the advancement of his not her, political career. That the northerners, Moslems from northern Israel who are known troublemakers were behind this nonsense points to their intent to spark violence amoungst their people who take quite fondly to wild rumours and fantasy. Josh before you come out with such profound statements, learn something first, it would help. This situation is too dangerous for the naive and ignorant.

    1. Muslims have always allowed actualy tourists onto the Temple Mount to visit the architectural beauty of the the mosque and the shrine. 2. Those who wish to assembly on the Mount to hold non-Muslim prayer services have not been allowed. 3. Fanatic and extremist Jewish groups have said clearly that their motive is to hold collective prayer on the site and that it belongs not to the Muslims, whom they refer to as "polluters' and "usurpers" but to the Jews. 4. Let the Israel government and the police state clearly to the Muslim authorities that they will do all in their power to protect the status quo and will not permit these nationalist groups to infiltrate, enter or antagonise others by their provocative actions. This is Israel's responsibility and they must make it clear to these inciters that they will be given no leeway to provike what could be another intifada. Unless that is Israel's intent.

and the behaviour of Israel has been one of respect. Throwing stones at Jewish worshippers praying at the Western Wall below is not respectful at all. Thed Mount authorities act as a mini state. Usually tourists are free to visit at certain times and there is only ONE entrance (next to the Wall) for tourists and non muslims to enter - there are other entrances exclusively for Muslims. Not many actually want to visit but some tourists and non muslims do , as well as Jewish tourists. In a respectful fashion. Why does Islam not respect the sanctity of Jewish worship in it's major holidays, when Israel does so to Islam.? They are not ignorant and know this holiday sigficance and the times when it is very busy. Do Jews throw stones on Muslim's while they pray?????? Never

    • Joe Sittizen
    • 05.10.09
    • 11:23

Cummings likes the obvious facts, so here they are directly from the UN report: "From the facts available, the Mission finds that the rocket and mortars attacks, launched by Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, have caused terror in the affected communities of southern Israel and in Israel as a whole. Furthermore, it is the Mission?s view that the mortars and rockets are uncontrolled and uncontrollable, respectively. This indicates the commission of an indiscriminate attack on the civilian population of southern Israel, a war crime, and may amount to crimes against humanity." It's very easy to see that the Palestinians committed thousands of war crimes since 2001 with the rocket attacks against civilians. If fact, Cummings knows that Palestinians have been attacking civilians for decades. Palestinian war crimes. Israel doesn't have to ask for it now - the facts are there and the conclusion made by Goldstone: Palestinian leaders must be put on trial for war crimes.

Whether it be an Arab driving his car through a Jewish neighborhood on Yom Kippur, a definite NO NO, or it is the pelting of worshippers with rocks during Sukkot, all this and more have become commonplace to you. Why the hell would you accept this behaviour? Are you but another western patronist, who expects these unwashed and uncivilized people to act in such a wild manner? I think so. Rumours spread like wildfire through the Clans and neighborhoods, they do not need an ounce of truth, for the orgasm of throwing rocks at Jews is enough in itself. If it happens to be with the backing of the Palestinian Authority then even better, this way the Swedes will provide funds for lawyers to get these hooligans out of jail. Have you no morals sir? Enough is enough. Its only mentioned in Islamic religious text as a holly site for Jews. Muslim text claims rights to the mount openly as squatters and land thieves. Their ownership equation is "what is taken becomes Muslim property till the end of time". In this context the Temple Mount is explicitly viewed as stolen occupied property BUT with the right, as a Muslim occupation, to keep property stolen forever (and losers weepers). That's the core of the matter and why no Israel (not even pre-67 borders) can ever be accepted. Ever. War? If not the Temple Mount.. its Jews in Israel or Jews on the planet or cartoons or .. War and empire building is core to both political Islam (HAMAS etc) and Pan-Arab nationalism (Fatah, Ba'ath etc.).

No one is going to be fooled by official Israeli hasbara over this. Fanatic Jews should not be allowed any where near the Mosque compound since we all know what they are up to. It's quite astonishing to read here the many comments by die hard deluded Zionists who keep refering to the Mosque as 'mount'. Well, let me tell you something you never read in official Zionist narrative. The handful of Jews or so who had lived in the old city of Jerusalem since the Arab conquest in the 7th century A.D never bothered with the area until the late 16th century. Previous generations of Jews who visited or resided in the city had never made any attempt at praying near the Mosque. Until the 1920's, Jews never prayed near the site and only started demanding access after the arrival of the British in 1918 to the part of the wall of the Mosque where the current Western Wall stands. The entire history of a Jewish link to the city is a fabrication. Jerusalem is as Arab as Paris is French.

Moshe Dayan, as a gesture of goodwill after the '67 War He gave it to the WAQF to oversee, not realizing how they would take advantage and eviscerate the Temples artifacts, many of which were carted off into the desert, they're still diggin merrily away in the attempt to distort history Dayan was a great General, but a poor visionary

The temple Mount is part of the land of Israel, just as the Statue of Liberty is American. As such, Israel should control the area and raise the flag of Israel on the Temple Mount. Those who cause violence should be evicted and thrown into jail. Israel has protected the rights of all religions. Not so the Arabs, now or in the past.

Maybe Fayyad's plea would sound better if behind that plea we should ask him "What Happen to and was allowed to happen to all the Jewish Temples in Gaza. The truth is after what they did they shouldn't even be allowed to go near the Temple Mount.

France visiting Har Habait (temple mount) is a provocation? And having Arab youth pelting stones at them - part of the known Arab hospitality - is not? You, Muslim-Arabs disgust me. Instead of reaching out and sitting down for a peaceful negotiation with the government that has already made peaceful gestures towards you in Samaria and Judea, e.g. opening roads, developing the economy, you continue to demonize, to de-legitimize Israel. Why should anyone have peace with you if you don't know yet the meaning of the word,, e.g. look at the "peace" Israel has with Jordan and especially with Egypt.

over the Temple Mount? The fact that they conquered it. What should give Israel domination on the Temple Mount? The fact that they reconquered it. Hoist the Al Aqsa mosque up on a truck and take it out to the Arabian Desert where it belongs.

This site is sacred to Jews and Moslems alike. It is time for that realization to sink in, and a different arrangement must be worked out. Perhaps the negotiations can be handled by the religious heads of both denominations- and with a minimum of political considerations.

Like many of the recent attacks on Israelis in the OCCUPIED West Bank, the real problem is that Israel expects the PA to provide security where its police are not allowed to do anything or even appear. Then when trouble occurs, it's the PA's fault even though IDF and Israeli law enforcement have no clue as to how to do counterinsurgency among Palestinians. Word gets out that settlers are going to attack Al Aqsa. The GOI authorities might stop the attack. But do they inform the people on the mount that the attack was stopped and won't occur? Do they do anything to assure the safety of those Muslims and Christians on top? Do they do anything to reassure those on the top of benign Israeli law enforcement intent? Is there any benign Israeli law enforcement intent? Democracy includes minority rights, not just majority rule.

...and the Jews get asked to be nicer by Sweden and whomever else. The Dome of the Rock and Alqsa are built atop the Jewish temple. Nop Jew was allowed near it while Jordan occupied east Jerusalem. The very first thing Israel did after it defeated the Jordanian aggression of Jine 1967 and took back the Temple Mount was to hand full control of the mosques to the Moslem WAKF. All the provocations in the years since have been Arab; including the recent lies by the Islamic Movement in the North that "right wing Jews" were going to "Take" it. PM Fayyad and the other PA opporunist are waging diplomatic blackmail; not war.

So now it is a ? group of French tourists [who] came to the mount for a previously arranged tour?. Ok, let us adopt an American mentality in believing whatever story the Israeli government throws at us. Then the question remains why did the Israel government permit any tourist activity be it French or whatever baring in mind the sensitivity of the place on that particular day and knowing that the Palestinians are expecting the right ? wing Jewish organization to pop up. Truly this government just loves the tension; it makes it easier for it to call the Palestinians who happen to be the indigoes inhabitants of the land terrorist?

Uh! Oh! Israelis are trying to penetrate the Haram Al Sharif again! That means Israel wants to distract the world from something important like a major landgrab, for example. I wonder what Israei leaders have up their sleeves this time? Oh well, the whole world will know in a few more days.
