PA negotiator: Israel painting us as 'untrustworthy bastards'
Remarks come after report Abbas may resign over stalled peace talks; Clinton touts steps to bolster PA leader.
By Haaretz Service and Barak Ravid Tags: Barack Obama Mahmoud Abbas Middle East peace Israel newsThe chief Palestinian negotiator lashed out at Israel's stance toward peace talks on Tuesday, after a report that his president, Mahmoud Abbas, had threatened to step down due to the lack of progress in the peace process.
"You're presenting us as 'untrustworthy bastards,' while the fact of the matter is that you're the ones foot-dragging and refusing to end the occupation," Saeb Erekat told Army Radio.
Channel 10 reported on Monday evening that Abbas has told the White House that he is considering stepping down. In the Army Radio interview on Tuesday, Erekat refused to confirm or deny the report, but said Israel's position on West Bank settlement building and other key issues was "intolerable."
"Netanyahu says he is ready to return to negotiations, but this the same old tune," Erekat added. "Every [Israeli] government that comes along demands that we come to the discussions without preconditions, after we have already succeeded in reaching agreements with previous governments."
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that Obama administration efforts should center on bolstering Abbas' position. Her comments were in a report to President Barack Obama last week on attempts to renew negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Channel 10 News reported last night that Abbas has told the White House that he is considering stepping down because of the lack of progress in the peace process.
A senior political source who was privy to the State Department report noted that in it Clinton had stressed the significant setback to Abbas in Palestinian public opinion because of the initial decision not to press ahead with bringing the Goldstone report on the Gaza Strip to the Human Rights Council of the United Nations.
Days before the report was delivered to Obama, Erekat went to Washington, where he warned of a potential nightmare scenario as a result of the difficult domestic situation faced by Abbas and the overall desperation in the Ramallah headquarters of the Palestinian Authority government over the stalled peace process.
Clinton recommended a variety of measures to bolster Abbas, including a request to Israel that it carry out a series of goodwill actions and show greater flexibility in order to facilitate the resumption of talks. The secretary of state said in the report that strengthening Abbas is critical, as elections in the PA are likely in the near future.
Clinton also reported that she intends to meet on November 2 in Morocco with a group of Arab foreign ministers and will ask them to step up their political and economic support for Abbas vis-a-vis Hamas.

this isnt South Africa in the 1990s, and Arabs are not black Africans neither are Israelis white Afrikaners, so get a grip with reality.
pullout of Gaza???Hamas takeover of Gaza,Palestinians voting for Hamas??? On the last note why did Palestinians vote Hamas either they think the PA ARE UNTRUSTWORTHY BASTARDS, or they prefer the policies of Hamas I would say that both could be a contributing factor. How can Israel withdraw to 67 lines knowing that pallies will vote Hamas???
Good grief Erekat, spare us the crocodile tears. Why did Fatah lose the last election? Because your own Palestinians know that you are untrustworthy bastards. And instead of cleaning up the corruption, nepotism and graft, Abbas and his lieutenants (like you) have simply whined a lot and blamed Israel for your own mess. Difficult domestic situation over the stalled peace process? Of course! Why don't you make a genius move and launch another intifada to cover up your incompetence? On the other hand, why not uncover all those billions of dollars that Arafat stole and give it to your people in job creation programs?
..Part 2, a new film by Quentin Tarrantino about the untrustworthy, but very wealthy Palestinian leadership who garner too much money to change things now. "Hilarious yet tragic" said one prominent film critic...
Israel never had any intention in allowing a Palestinian state. Now is the time for Palestinians in Palestine and Israel to seek the only viable solution. A one state solution with equal rights for Jews and Arabs in one binational state. Israel and their settlement enterprise destroyed the 2 state solution.
PA Heroes: Abu-Isbah and Mughrabi Amidst thunderous applause, Ahmed Qureia opened the PA conference of August 4, 2009 with the words, "We have in our midst the hero Khalied Abu-Isbah, hero of the operation led by the Shahida (Martyr) Dalal Mughrabi. We salute him and welcome him." They were responsible for the 1978 coastal road bus hijacking and cold-blooded murder of 37 Israelis, including 12 children. This is the true face of the PA who criticize us. How do the Israelis writing peace-loving platitudes on this sight ignore the fact that our partner in negotiation, Abbas, congratulated the parents of the child murderer Kuntar upon his release from an Israeli prison (in a Hezbollah exchange for 3 dead Israeli soldiers that were murdered in captivity) and met him in Beirut.
What they need is an Anwar Sadat. There was nothing to admire about Arafat. The best thing he ever did for the palestinians and the world was die. For that we can thank him.
Take a more thorough look at what your hero did for his people. The results are very telling.
It seems that the Palestinians have a habit of revealing what they are up to at the moment, by accusing the Israelis of the exact same thing. So at a time, when the Palestinian propganda works is turning out anti-Israeli distortions full time, they stop to accuse Israel of painting the Palestinians a certain way. It would be less ironically funny if in fact, any agreement ever signed on behalf of the Palestinians had EVER been honored, EVER.
It WAS Saeb Erekat who told CNN at the time that '500 people in Jenin were massacred! massacred! I saw it with my own eyes'. Untrustworthy? Yes indeed!
While your on the subject of truth, maybe its time to just come up with it for once. Come on say it Mr. chief negotiator. You know you want to. Say that you and the Pals would rather rot in hell than to share the land with Jews. If you have any integrity, you'll tell it like it is. Now that is a good place to start the conversation.
Netanyahu looked at Abbas and told him to tell Palestinians to accept 2 countries (Israel and Palestine) for 2 different peoples. There is no escaping this if Palestinians want a deal with Israel. There is no point arguing details if Palestinians can't accept this. Palestinians repeating the same demands over and over again will get the same results over and over again.
For talks not for a lasting peace, for talks. Talks is where final deals are reached Preconditions for talks from Israel?please explain
Oh, poor Abbas. My heart cries for him. Clinton is trying to uplift him. Yes, uplift him out of the country. We don't need him. They are all a chip off the old terrorist block. And the Arabs are really trustworthy. Sure. They can be trusted to be terrorists and child killers. Their own children and Jewish children.
You said it, Mr. Erekat. You aren't going to get a divided Jerusalem so start your plans from there. For 60 years there has been no peace with the Jews. Make peace with the Jews, and their prosperity could flow to you.
Sorry, Erekat, but the truth is that it's your own people who are calling you untrustworthy bastards. Despite all the talk, Fatah still hasn't cleaned up its act. It's still run by inept cronies, rife with nepotism and graft, and unable to give the Palestinian people an alternative to Hamas. Abbas is stepping down because he knows he'll be crushed in the upcoming elections, as will Erekat. We Israelis keep hoping that you Fatah people will get your act together and pretend it's at least the 1980s, let alone the 21st century. Silly us for hoping, huh?
The untrustworthy bastards claimed that they were going to alter and amend their national charter. They never did, they only pretended to. If they want to come off as, "trustworthy," they could start by doing something as simple as that.
After Palestinain authority we have Hamas, after Abbass, what will we have? a PM or WM?
How convinient for you to say this. Well here is the other's side version. Natanyahu needs to get serious about ending the conflict: Say yes to a palestinian state, right to return, MOve back to 67 borders, bring down the wall, stop killing innocent palestinian civilian, children and women, share resources, and stop treating Israeli arabs like animals, investigate war crimes and bring the culprits to justice! BUT HE WONT!!!!!!!!!!!!! But the world will!! Sooner or later!
The President is right to step Down he is too good a partner. Since taking over from Yasser Araffat he HAS LOST the last Gen. ELECTION in GAZA. Lost Gaza to HAMAS. Lost his dignity as a President in front of his people. Lost his self esteem to provide a state for the Palestinians. Lost his drive to work harder achieving ZIET. Now lost his faith in ever seeing a State of Palestine. What he will gain a "well deserve Retirement". Good Luck Sir, we do understand your Predicament.
Obama capitulated on the settlements. Obama capitulated on the Goldstone Report. Obama undercut Abbas by pressuring him to request the UN to table the Report. Obama increased annual USA military aid to Israel to $2.8 billion. It appears Obama has forfeited a neutral position for the sake of preserving votes in the USA. Advocating human rights requires action as well as rhetoric. Inevitably the oppressor will be offended since actions must be more specific than general rhetoric. That was the case in the American South and South Africa. If Obama is sincere about a Middle East peace, the Obama administration can: 1. Cut economic aid to Israel if the settlements do not stop and Israel fails to negotiate in good faith. 2. Divert those funds to Palestine to assist it in developing a viable economy, government and businesses. 3. Provide leadership in the UN prompting other Western nations to invest in Palestine. 4. Support a boycott of Israel as a last resort.
No need to uphold something already there, recognised and acknowledged by the world at large. For the -----th' time, we are hearing " including a series of goodwill actions, and show greater flexibility...".by the Jews of course. All this while the paragon of decency, the muslim world, continues relentlessly it's harassment of their partner for peace the " trustworthy bastard"; through the courts, the UN,The EU, the HRC, the Arab league, that nut ahmadino, now including Bahrain's parliament a model of righteousness, fairness, still dabbing in slavery (foreign workers and others),a virtuous muslim entity. Anything else omitted? And to you # 34 Ryan from NYC. No, palestinians do not need another arafat; a crook, a thief, a murderer. They have arafats by the thousands floating around in gaza and the west bank waiting in the wings......!
What else would you say about people who one day ask Israel to throw Hamas out of Gaza, and the next day blame Israel's attack on Hamas as a "war crime"? What else would you say about people who claim that liquidation of few Hamas operatives is the worst genicide (and of course - "war crime") in the history of humanity? What else would you say about people who announce that Israel captured and annihilated Al-Aqsa, while in the reality they send their thugs to stone tourists? That's why any agreement with these bastards won't keep, and that's why we shouldn't treate them as trustworthy.
Arafat did not stand down and make concessions to Israel, like the infamous "best offer" from Barak in 2000. He would not sell off the Palestinian's fundamental right to a secure state controlling its own borders and airspace, recognition of the 1948 exodus, and a chance to rebuild their livelihoods. (oh, and to all those who love to say that Arafat "is a terrorist", how about your own "peace loving" Yitzak Rabin or Shimon Peres?)
IF the shoe fits wear it. PA doesnt want peace nor another Arab Palestinian state. They just dont want Israel. They arent fooling anyone except ignorant appeasers.
Arafat retired allegedly with a pension packet of five to six billion dollars of Pal money. How much will Abbas retire with ? Olmert offered Abbas as much as he could offer without being thrown out of office. Barak offered Arafat more than anyone believed possible. The Pals received 77% of Mandatory Palestine in the form of the Kingdom of Jordan, and now they are seeing how much of Israel's 23% they can also grab. The phrase 'untrustworthy bastards' somehow doesn't sound too far off.
ABBAS before you resign of your office Let it be known, That in 2009 alone Hundreds of roadblocks have been lifted, by Netanyahu! Let it be known, That as result of Israeli government policy Ramallah, is flourishing! Let it be known, That the same thing that has happened in Ramallah, Is now happening in Nablus What was regarded not so long ago by Israel as the capital of terrorism, In 2009 is now starting to look like a Palestinian commercial and trade center, People are saying their sales in 2009 have grew by 90%! Let it be known, That once people in WB could wait for two hours in the Havara crossing, Today as result of Netanyahu, Brak, and Lieberman policy of ease And the roadblocks in Nablus have been lifted, It takes them approximately 5 minutes Let it be known, That in 2009 Every Saturday 50 Busses Plus some 400 cars enter Nablus, bringing with them something like 4000 Arab Israelis who do their shopping Nablus, this gets into the Arab Palestinian economy an extra 2 million NIS every Saturday! Seems those who you blindly despise are doing more for the benefit of the Arab Palestinians then any other government did (starting in 1987 when the first intifada started) and are taking grate security risks in doing it! So let it be known before you blow it all in the face of your people, like your predecessor Arafat!

As an outsider it seems to me that Hamas are unashamed genocidal terrorists and Abbas wants to be reconciled to them and to form a joint govt. To me, in my deep naivite, this would seem to paint the PA as untrustworthy bastards !
The PLO, Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, etc, etc, all have my profound trust in their stated intentions. Let's take Article 12 (Goal #1) of the Fatah Charter as a prime example: "Goals: The complete liberation of Palestine, and eradication of Zionist economic, political, military and cultural existence." Trust? Their faithful dedication to their cause, as manifested by the tens of thousands of terrorist attacks and missiles over the past 50 years has sealed my complete trust in these groups.
Mr negotiator: Prove Israel wrong.
Let's just ignore the fact that almost 10 million Muslems have been murdered by Muslems since 1947 or than the Demography will have changed within 20 years sealing the fate of Jews in "PalJewland". Nice idea though...for you, in Disneyland.
Indeed - Indeed Most Arabs/Moslims and Palestinians (Hamas)are Liars and absolutly not to trust.
Well, Mr. PA negotiator, you proved this time and time again.
Same old story. The new Israeli government comes to the table demanding negotiation "without preconditions", after trying to set a whole bunch of preconditions of its own. Then it ignores past agreements and forces the Palestinian negotiators to extract any terms that won't benefit Israel the hard way all over again. It's a very ineffective way of coming to a deal, but good as stalling tactics. Meanwhile, the Israeli government establishes "facts on the ground" by creating more Jewish settlements in the West Bank and working on the seperation fence. The settlers intimidate Palestinian farmers and destroy their olive trees, often with the IDF's protection. A compromise becomes less likely.
untrustworthy bastards is the perfect term to describe the palestinians. Abbas know himself and his ilk. And that is why Israel cannot believe that one word that abbas spews for peace is the truth
the most unexpected sources. Gee ---Maybe Obama is really trying to get a bi National state at the end of this process. From sea to shining river. A state where all are equal and have a vote. A true democracy in the Middle east---a shining beacon of how Jews and Arabs can live together in peace and harmony. Unlike the disaster that was the project "Zionism".

This isn't about the US or Mrs. Clinton or a choice between "going to war" with the "reactionary forces in Washington, DC" (Dinocode for "powerful Zionist lobby'??) This is about so many here and around the world realizing that Abbas and the PA are paper tigers who are proving themselves capable of little else than bitching, moaning and blaming anyone but themselves for their abject, sorry failures.
"PA negotiator: Israel painting us as 'untrustworthy bastards'" Many Palestinians also think the same about Abbas and his PA gang!
What does an old man like Abbas need to be PM for outclassed by Netanyahu and disappointed that Israel did not clear Hamas out of his way.On your way out make one gesture of peace: Tell the world that Jews are decent people and that Zionists have been misunderstood.and sstop expecting that other people, such as Obama, will solve your problems
Go on Hilary. Do the decent thing. Whoever's in control of America's Middle Eastern policy appears to have absolutely no idea what they're doing, and presumably it's you. You've angered Egypt and Jordan and you've destroyed Abbas' credibility. What's your next move? Joining Lieberman's party?
Abbas has been the Israel's best hope of peace but they want him gone. Why? They won't get anyone better from the Pal and Arab side for Israel. I guess that means they just don't want peace. That figures. It's in line with their other actions anyway.
Either go at war with the "reactionary forces" in Washington D.C. (including leading members of your own party), or go at war with the rest of the world..... Your choice, unfortunately there won't be a third alternative for you.
Why embarrass him more by giving him a bone? The Pals now have to chose between a puppy or a Rottweiler, guess which one they will chose?
Allow Abbas to get weakened, or whoop Netanyuha?
With an intransigent Bibi on one side, an abusive extremist in Hamas on the other, Abbas is in a lose lose situation. It is hard to see how he could even hold an election in Gaza. Who would monitor the ballot boxes that Hamas didn't force it's citizens to vote for them? And what if West Bank residents increased their support for Hamas out of frustration at the ongoing stalemate? It was a mistake for Clinton and Obama to press Bibi for a settlement freeze, or indeed to try and pressure either side into anything other than return to negotiating. If Abbas quits or loses, Israel will face a more difficult extremist intranistory figure and the game will have been set back decades, yet again.
Mahmoud Abbas must NOT be trusted. He has no credibility and i finished. Israel must watch its moves very carefully. Don't deal with him. (Thanks Marcy)
As long as Abbas has his hand in the honey pot, he is going no where. Abbas will eventually be removed by Hamas once Israel grows tired of his games and stops protecting him and his FATAH cronies.
Please do the Palestinians a HUGE favor and step down. They deserve better leaders. Not hapless cowards like yourself.
Let him resign. He is doesn't want peace. He wants the destruction of Israel. He is Arafat in a suit and tie.
For years, Israel has been called upon to make "goodwill gestures" and show "more flexibilty" in a vain attempt to "bolster" Fatah head Mahmoud Abbas. Despite the fact that he wears tailored suits, knows how to make a windsor knot in his tie, and his grandfatherly look, "moderate" Abbas is every much the terrorist that his predecessor Arafat was. At Arafat's command, Abbas oversaw the Munich massacre and was in charge of fundraising to subsidize other murderous Fatah attacks. Just recently at "moderate" Fatah's conference in Bethlehem, Abbas called for the "liberation" of ALL of Palestine (Akko, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Jerusalem etc.) by armed struggle. Last week, "moderate" Fatah called for a renewal of suicide bombings. What kind of "moderates" are Abbas and his Fatah henchmen???
Enough "good will" measures just say "A good riddance of bad rubbish!"
Clinton just can't see the strategic game being played here. Hamas is the best thing to happen to Likud in a decade. Every rocket is another LIkud voter. Abbas helps Kadima by providing a moderate face that makes the peace process look viable. If Abbas were replaced by some Hamas loony, then Israel could claim there is no partner for peace and continue expansionism. So ... considering these obvious motivating factors, it should be clear to everyone that the Netanyahu LIkud government has every reason to attempt to undermine and cripple Abbas before the next elections. If Abbas gets replaced, no peace process, no Kadima votes, and more expansion.
that's this former NY Senator ,H.Clinton ,a "warm supporter of Israel" wish. American Jews knew whom to elect indeed.
What Abbas needs t o do is get serious about ending the conflict: say yes to a Jewish Israel, say yes to a demilitarized state, and say yes to ending the conflict altogether by beginning the process of reconciling his people to the fact that they will never defeat Israel and should focus on building their own society. But he won't.
