Norwegian official: Schools considering Israel boycott

Hundreds of scholars have signed a petition condemning Norwegian University's vote to boycott Israel.

A Norwegian university's controversial vote on boycotting Israel is part of a nationwide campaign that may bring additional boycott votes at other Norwegian universities, said a representative on the board of executives at the University of Tromso.

Hundreds of scholars from Israel and elsewhere have signed a petition condemning the vote at the University of Trondheim, scheduled for November 12.

If the initiative passes, Trondheim, also known as the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), could become the first Western university to boycott Israel.

A representative of the executive board at the University of Tromso said pro-Palestinian activists are trying to call a vote on boycotting Israel there as well.

"A group of people have petitioned the board to hold a vote on this in the coming weeks, but no decision has been made yet," said the board representative, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He added there was "a national effort" to have Norwegian universities boycott Israel, and that the Norwegian boycott proponents were acting in unison with their American and British peers.

The petition condemning the Trondheim boycott initiative bears the signatures of more than 900 scholars, including Nobel laureates. It states that they "refute and condemn the campaign to boycott Israeli academics" and academic institutions.

"We stand in solidarity with Israeli academics and academic institutions; if you boycott them, boycott us as well," states the petition, co-signed by Nobel laureates Kenneth J. Arrow from Stanford University, Aaron Ciechanover from the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Roald Hoffmann of Cornell University and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji of the Ecole Normale Superieure.

Parliamentarian Hans Olav Syversen from the Christian Democrat Party said NTNU was "turning itself into a laughingstock" by holding the vote. An NTNU spokesman said that the institution will hold the vote, but that the exact agenda for the vote has not been set yet.

can you answer me one question: when so many jewish and israeli minds are against the occupation - why then are israeli academics boycotted instead of supported?

Peter SM, I'm afraid your hate-monger's rants are hollow. Many Jewish brilliant minds (from Harold Pinter to Noam Chomsky), including many Nobel Prize winners are against the occupation. Einstein himself distanced his philosophy from Israel after 1948, when it became clear to him that the peaceful way he proposed did not work in practice. He indeed, politely refused to become Israel's president. Have a look here: http://www.jatonyc.org/ I know some guys like you down under still hold a colonialist view of the world, but it's time to move on. One of Australia's brilliant minds is actually a Chinese-Australian that goes by the name of Terry Tao. The time for Euro-supremacy is gone...

... and he never wanted to be one. He refused offers to work at the Israeli university and even a possible Israeli presidency... He also said very early on, before WWII after a visit to Israel: Israel would do well to get to know the Arab people and communicate with them at grass root level.

martin, as usual i dont agree with you. if these people in norway and in other countries really would like to have freedom and justice for the palestinians, they should work together with israeli academics instead of boycotting them because most critics of the present impasse of the peace process comes from academic circles in israel. however, these people in norway and elsewhere dont care at all for the palestinians. instead they seek indeed what you try to deny again and again: the destruction of israel. that's their goal. if they would like to have peace they would rather boycott palestinian universities until they stop spreading hate against jews and the west.

josh, your hurrah sounds strange as long as you obviously dont boycott the products of researchers from israeli university, first of all your computer which you use for reading haaretz and writing in the talkback. if you mean it real with your hurrah about the boycott, throw away your computer immediately since each computer includes technics developped by israeli researchers. as long as you still keep your computer i dont take your hurrah seriously. after having thrown away your computer, you can go on throwing away all the important medical products developped by researchers of israeli universities (e. g. for cancer treatment, parkinson, diabetes, aids, etc.). continue with condemning and boycotting the water saving inventions of israeli researchers which help e. g. african countries. stop using voice mail technology. and so on and so on. there is a very long list. so, start boycotting one after the other - and then shout hurrah about your aggravated life.

....Höhnlein etc. It's fair to assume, that without the conduct by right-wing Israel and the right-wing "Jewish establishment" in the U.S. over the past couple of years, this boycott would never ever have happenend, correct...??? Those guys don't want Israels destruction, they only wanna finally see the (overdue) freedom and justice for the Palestinians.....

Independent: no, Islamic influence growing. Neutral: Hardly, given the lack of independence. In any event, there is obvious no neutrality on this issue because the Nords have simply ignored viscious, unprovoked attacks on Israel and Israelies, even after Israelies simply withdrew from Gaza. Humanitarian: That's a joke. The Nords have built a treasure chest by stealing land and resources from the Sami people. Its laughable, hypocritical and pathetic that they would point there fingers at others. More per capita using oil money they have stolen from the Samis. Of course, the Nords are not much different than much of the rest of the world that built their riches up by taking land from the indigenous population. The exception is Israel where the Jews are the 1st Peoples. Not literally, because others preceded them But there are no other peoples from the area who preceded Jews and that is certainly the case with Pals who are very much late comers to the area.

The fact that the pro-pal lobby in Norway is so vociferous does not justify an academic boycott, Josh! Why is there not a louder call to boycott China, or Turkey or African countries with their appalling human rights records????? Both proven and ongoing.

including subsidy of racist hatred in the Palestine media. Anything to do with the Moslem vote in Norway perchance? "The following article in a Norwegian daily reports on PMW Director Itamar Marcus' presentation of a report to members of the Norwegian Parliament which linked Norwegian funding to PA hate propaganda. Norway finances Israel-hate Dagen Magazinet (Norwegian daily), Oct. 23, 2008 The director of Palestinian Media Watch, Itamar Marcus, met Wednesday with members of Parliament of the Christian Democratic Party and the Progress Party to whom he presented a new, detailed and sensational report about how Norwegian money is spent on the official hate propaganda against Israel. With example after example Marcus documents how Fatah and Hamas use children's TV to spread anti-Israeli hate propaganda, to glorify suicide bombers and to encourage children to follow in the footsteps of the terrorists in order to "liberate" the "occupied" Palestine. Controlled by Abbas "The TV broadcasts are controlled from the top, which means that Fatah's children's TV is controlled by President Mahmoud Abbas. A lot of the Norwegian aid of 790 million kroner in 2008 is channeled to precisely President Abbas and the running of his office in Ramallah. The propaganda we see today had not existed were it not approved from the top," says Itamar Marcus. He shows one video after another with examples of anti Israeli propaganda in children's TV, music videos and descriptions of geography and history in Palestinian schoolbooks. "Jonas Gahr Stרre does not know what the Norwegian money is used for," is the clear message from Marcus. That stands in stark contrast to a recent response by the Foreign Minister to a question he received in Parliament from Ingebrigt Sרrfonn (Chr. Dem) on Sept 26:

Thank God for independent, neutral and humanitarian states such as Norway. For those of you whose foreign policy is determined by the weight of you bombs, it should be pointed out that Norway donates abroad more per capita than any other country in the world. It is splendid to see a country not led around by a zionist nose-ring. Hurrah for Lille Norge!
