Nightclub brawl preceded murder of former MK's cousin
Police have received information indicating that a brawl at a Tel Aviv nightclub led to the murder of Ronen Gavrieli last Tuesday.
Yesterday, received testimony from workers at Night, as the club is called, and confiscated its security tapes for examination in the hope of identifying those involved in the fatal brawl. Gavrieli, 35, was shot to death on the Holon dunes shortly after a brawl took place and police believe one or more of the men involved in the fight may have been the killer.
However, police are not ruling out other lines of investigation. One possibility is that Gavrieli, whose family is allegedly involved in organized crime, was the victim of a dispute between his own family's organization and that of Yitzhak Abergil - or, alternatively, of a dispute between his family and a group of criminals from Holon over control of the local protection racket. Gavrieli himself has no significant criminal record.
Friends of Gavrieli's told police investigators that the nightclub brawl, in which a large number of people were involved, began when Gavrieli sought the attention of a woman who had come to the club with several men affiliated with another crime organization.
Three weeks ago, a security guard at the nearby Golda nightclub was killed in a drive-by shooting by unknown assailants while riding in a taxi with a security guard from Night. The Night guard and the taxi driver were wounded. A gag order has been placed on the investigation into this shooting.
A year ago, the director of the company that provides security at Night was murdered, along with a bystander, while standing outside the club. Police initially arrested three suspects in that case, but they were later released for lack of evidence.
