Award-winning poet and chemist Avner Treinin dies at 83

Poet and chemist Avner Treinin, 83, died Friday from complications due to Parkinson’s Disease. Treinin, who was a professor of chemistry at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, published more than 10 books of poetry and was the recipient of several awards, including the Brenner Prize and the Bialik Prize. Treinin was well known for one poem, “The Coat of the Man of the Camps,” about the concentration camps; but Jerusalem, where he was born and lived, was a recurring theme in his work. Novelist Haim Be’er said he considered Treinin, alongside Yehuda Amichai, one of the greatest poets to successfully express Jerusalem’s complexity. ‏(Ido Balas‏)

New gay magazine launching; will only focus on lifestyle

A new Israeli magazine aimed at a readership of gay men is to be launched in early 2012, and will shy away from the politics of the local gay community, instead focusing on lifestyle. Magazines for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community have failed economically over the years. The editor, Dvir Bar, formerly editor of the now-defunct LGBT magazine “Hazman Havarod,” said the latter was published by the LGBT rights group “and had to give equal time to everyone. We’re trying to correct this and create a magazine for gay men as other places in the world have.” The magazine will publish four issues in the first year, which will be free, supported by advertising only. ‏(Ido Balas‏)
