New IDF unit to fight enemies on Facebook, Twitter

Top IDF spokesman's Office official: We must show the totality of IDF actions without a filter.

By Gili Izikovich and Anshel Pfeffer Tags: Israel facebook Israel news IDF

The Israel Defense Forces Spokesman's Office is to begin drafting computer experts with an eye toward establishing an Internet and new media department unit, Army Spokesman Brig. Gen. Avi Benayahu said Monday.

Speaking at the Eilat Journalists Conference, Benayahu said the new department would focus on the Internet's social media networks mainly to reach an international audience directly rather than through the regular media.

The new unit, as well as an initiative by the Information and Diaspora Ministry to train people to represent Israel independently on the Internet and in other arenas, were presented Monday at the conference during a panel discussion on Israeli public relations abroad.

Responding to criticism of Israel's ability to face hostile entities on the Web, Benayahu said the new program would be able to deal with the problem. He said that from each group drafted to the Army Spokesman's Office, between eight to 10 young people who are experts in Web 2.0 - YouTube, Facebook and Twitter - to be identified before induction, would be assigned to the new department. The new recruits would be put to work in the new media unit after undergoing a general Army Spokesman's Unit training course.

Benayahu told Haaretz the new program would be up and running in a few months.

The Army Spokesman's Office began working in this area more than a year ago. During Operation Cast Lead it put up YouTube videos of attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip, to illustrate the care the IDF takes to avoid hitting civilians. One such clip showed how the pilot of an IDF helicopter diverted a missile that had been fired at a target when it was realized civilians had entered the target area.

The head of communications at the Army Spokesman's office, Col. Ofer Kol, said they wanted to reach "mainly an international audience that is less exposed to operational processes. Foreign media do more 'zooming-in' and so it's important to us to show the totality of IDF actions without a filter."

The IDF YouTube account got millions of hits during Operation Cast Lead, which led to the decision to expand activity at the site and other social network Web sites. The IDF hopes to show other sides of the army less familiar to the world, such as women's service.

The Spokesman's Office has also contacted bloggers who are known as opinion-makers and sent them information and pictures directly.

Brig. Gen. Avi Benayahu.

This is exactly what Iranian regime has set to do. They are preparing "Internet" units to fight the opposition. This is crazy. What happened to the freedom of expression? At least Iran is not shy about their oppressive measures but why Israel. I have lost my respect for them. The government should not get involved in these matters. What's next? Whoever say anything remotely in contrast to the Israeli government is taken away and interrogated? Fascism is on the rise.

In reports issued following Israel?s military operations in Gaza, Amnesty International, the International Crisis Group and Human Rights Watch each determined that the rocket units of the Palestinian armed groups operated from within populated areas.303 Human Rights Watch and the International Crisis Group gathered reports from civilians about instances in which armed groups had launched or had attempted to launch rockets near residential areas. I was wondering about how much of our tax money it's going to cost. How about teaching it already in schools? Making it a bagrut subject? Hell, why not a university course? From the flak we're taking from all and sundry, it doesn't seem to have worked too well last year. Yours sincerely, A Totally Unprofessional Blogger (TUB).

There are social networking sites in Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia devoted to spreading anti-Semitic propaganda. One such popular blog site is Che Dat run by former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahatir Mohammad. In order to try to overt resolution of discriminatory advantages that his Administration supported to level the playing field between Malays who are Muslims versus the Chinese and Indian Malaysians, Mahatir diverts attention of domestic unrest by whipping up anti-Jewish/Israeli propaganda of the worst sorts, hoping issues of religious discrimination -- illegal closing of Christian churches and Indian temples -- will go away. Unless, the IDF starts to look at anti-Semitism from a more global perspective (and stop being so Euro-or American-centric) Israel has little chance of winning friends and influencing others. Israel's future is more in growth economies of Asia than on the corrupt West.

No, Mark, pp. 135-151 of the Goldstone report deal with matters like deliberate Israeli shelling of UN premises and use of white phosphorous, as well as the total incredibility of the Israeli "investigation". But if you look on p. 12 you find: "From the information available to it, the Mission found no evidence to suggest that Palestinian armed groups either directed civilians to areas where attacks were being launched or forced civilians to remain within the vicinity of the attacks. The reports received by the Mission suggest ... that the Palestinian armed groups did not at all times adequately distinguish themselves from the civilian population among whom the hostilities were being conducted."

So some here are upset that Israel will respond to the many lies spread by the Israel haters? As always any Israeli response is condemned by the usual suspects. The fact is the web has been used successfully to spread false information about Israel as we see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_B1H-1opys Here: http://www.aish.com/v/50574432.html Now remember the fabricated Jenin massacre or the faked Gaza beach incident. Really there are just so many staged, fabricated and exaggerated stories it will take a team to respond them all. By contrast nobody has ever shown Israel to be involved in such a dis-information campaign. All you get from the Israel haters is a story here or there where something was attempted to be covered up...similar to the Tillman case here in the U.S....but nothing like the videos I just supplied you with, where stories are faked for PR sympathy.

Hi Meo I dont quite know where you are coming from and I can only talk from a viewpoint of a bystander who has actualy servred in the IDF in the "territories". I know that there is no way that an Israeli soldier would shoot or kill innoscent bystanders, it would not fit with our morals - No matter what our political or racial beliefs. We are trained to prevent colateral casualties and the few occasions that this occurs are purely and regretably accidental. Indeed the IDF, during the Gaza campain actualy phoned the mobiles of people whose homes may have been near to military occurances to ask them to leave temporarily. There are numerous proven cases of Hizbolah and Hamas fighters physicaly preventing local residents from leaving their houses because, hidden underneath them,in cellars and vaults, here weapons slicks. Even paradeding variouous "dead" youth and women in front of the press who were subsequently used on other occasions, as if they have a troop of actors for the purpose

the Saudi's have benn financing a huge media and internet campaign against Israeli and jewish interests for years. They attempt to diminish and evaporate any Jewish historical discovery or gain whilst exagerating and magnifying the influence of anything remotely associated with Islam. Why shouldn't Israel have an organised response?

At the time Sabra and Chatila occured Israel was the occupying power in Lebanon, and the Lebanese Christian militias were Israeli proxies armed and paid by Israel. The Geneva Convention states quiet clearly Israel responsibility to the civilian population. Incidentally The Goldstone Report states quite clearly that there is no evidence that HAMAS used civilians as human shields. The point is the form of warfare used by the IDF in one of the most crowded places on Planet Earth was guaranteed to cause massive civilian casualties. Which it did. The fact that Israel has refused to investigate the allegations contained in the Goldstone Report shows the disdain Israel has for civilised behaviour. Resorting to defending Israeli actions by pointing a finger and saying they do it to doesn't absolve Israel of responsibility for it's actions. Which can no longer be hidden thanks to the Internet and 24 hour news. A media company in the IDF will not change that

What a co-operation Chris!I won't even say usual Shame on you because you don't care anyway.... Sabra and Shatila??Israel can have indirect involvement, but did not do the killing. It is good to see your "outrage" when innocent people are killed, what about the Shatila and Burj-el Barajneh massacre in May 1985? Or October 1990, when Syrian forces overran Christian-controlled areas of Lebanon? I know,I know those massacres don't count because you are specialized on Israel's crimes...

will still have to counter is the photographs of children with their heads and legs blown off, the graffiti, the looting, the war crimes as listed within the Goldstone Report that Israel refuses to aknowledge or investigate even though we saw them live on the 24 hour news networks. The world has changed from the days of Menachem Begin and Ariel Sharon. Israel can no longer kill civilians with impunity. Setting up a media company within the IDF will not change peoples abhorrence at the actions of the IDF in places like Sabra and Chatila, Gaza and South Lebanon.
