Netanyahu would meet Assad 'any time, any place'

Statement by PM's Bureau comes in response to Haaretz report that Syria is prepared to make 'gradual peace.'

By Jack Khoury and Avi Issacharoff Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu

The Prime Minister's Bureau said Wednesday that Benjamin Netanyahu is willing to meet with the Syrians immediately and without preconditions. In the unusual statement, made to the widely distributed London-based newspaper Asharq Al Awsat, the bureau also said the prime minister was willing to go to Damascus to bring about a renewal in talks.

The statement comes in response to a recent Haaretz report that Syria was prepared to make "gradual peace." Arab sources told the London paper that the report in Haaretz correspond with the position held by Syria since the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991.

According to the bureau's statement, "Netanyahu is prepared to immediately set out for Damascus to meet with President Assad, or to invite him to Jerusalem, or to meet with him in a third country."

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu quickly announced that Turkey was prepared to start mediating if both parties agreed.

Meanwhile, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said Wednesday at the Arab League summit that, at the beginning of last year, Syria had viewed the Obama administration as providing a window of opportunity for real peace to develop, but that "efforts have not borne fruit due to declared Israeli policy of continued occupation and burying the Palestinian case."

Moallem also said that continued Judaization of Jerusalem and Israel's declaration of the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Rachel's Tomb as Jewish heritage sites proves Israel's refusal to make peace. He called on the Arab countries to take "a clear, united and uncompromising stand that would lead the international community and countries working for peace to oblige Israel to abandon this policy."

I agree with the previous poster who suggested Dubai. Locking up Bibi in a jail cell while he negotiates a successfully peace deal is the perfect solution. But NOBODY is fooled by Bibi's statements (other than those who choose to be fooled). This is more typical Bibi tactics. He promises the moon up front, but then poisons the deal in the details. And don't take MY word for it, just go back and read Bibi's own words explaining his strategy to the Gaza Withdraw commission. Bibi explains how to both make an offer and sink the offer at the same time better than I can.

All what we had till now was talking, talking and double talking. The traditional trendd must be broken and there must be a direct meet between Asad and Bibi, same as Begin and Sadat. So accept Bibi offer to visit Damascus.

Israel was very reasonable when accepted the 2-state in 1948. Israel accepted to remain without jerusalem for almost 20 years, 1948-1967. etc.. Israel was more than reasonable.. In conclusion : Those who was never reasonable was the arab-palestinians & that is the history recorded problem ?? Thanks for you post.

I've heard that one before. What's the point of having a meeting with the Syrians if there is nothing on the table ? Netanyahu will not withdraw from the Golan even in return for a real peace. Why should the Syrians want to give him a propaganda boost ?

What you attribute to the Arabs is what Israel lives by. Everyone knows the Israeli Government is not to be trusted. Nor, unfortunately are the Pals. Niether have negotiated in good faith in the past. Both sides have always had their own agenda. Now is the time to put all the past aside and look to the future. Both leaders have an historic opportunity. They must sieze the moment and stop acting like spoiled children (OK, they are not acting). Each side must be reasonable and comprimise. This is it. Don't blow it!

They never raise their hat to the truth ! But always raise their voices to all fabricated lies & double talk ! Assad must go to Jerusalem if he really wants peace that include co-existence with the Jewish State ! Sadat did it, why not Bashara ?! A visit to Jerusalem is a sign of atonement to all those who give their lives in the Israel-Arab conflict ? Natenyahu said he is ready to go to Damascus & do what Sadat did before him; The move now is with the Syrian President !

I believe he would meet the dictator of Syria at any time, any place. Isn't Netanyahu the "right wing" prime minister that gave Bethlehem, capital of Judea, city of King David and his descendant Yeoshua / Jesus to muslim terrorist Arafat?

Israel's Assad prediction 5 years ago and Israel's plans to attac
    • mehmet
    • 04.03.10
    • 12:10

Five years ago Israel's strategists and specialist journalists such as Bar'el had predicted that Assad's govt would not survive another year. This prediction was a complete failure. Syria, despite not being a military power of any significance continues to being an important factor for Israel and will be more so in the future. In the long run Iran will develop its weapons and the position of Syria will become even more critical. to avoid a large-scale threat Israel might consider attacking Lebanon and Syria during the next 5 years or so. I think this is quite probable. The way to do it for Israel is to perturb its northern boundary or another disproportionate attack to both Gaza and West Bank to agitate Hizzies. We will wait and see.

Netinyahu and Assad can make history. What are you waiting for? For more destruction and killing??? Grab Peace while its there and end this ongoing suffering once and for all. European nations fought among themselves for decades, and millions were killed, but in a very short time they found peace and now have one currency and are in a great economic union. We can definitly take their example.

Bibi is not the leader peace lovers are seeking. I believe no peace will be achieved under netenyahu leadership, on the contrary, will peace process be more complicated. He likes to convince his people and the public opinion he is seeking peace. He can achieve peace by simple and easy steps: withdraw from occupied lands; west bank with Jerusalem included, Gaza, Golan Hieghts.

assad ha always stated that he will talk only through intermidiaries, namely turkey. assad has always stated that he will talk only if it is understood that israel will give back the golan in its entirety. assad has always stated that even if he gets back the golan, he will not renounce syria's defence pact with iran. furthermore, assad said that he will continue to arm hezbollah and hamas. all of this has been reported time and again by the very left leaning haaretz.

    • 06:38

Israel needs to neutralize Syria, either through war or peace or an attack on Iran is not an option. In the past, Israel has offered Syria some brazenly transparent deals. My favorite is the one in which Syria gives Israel everything they want up front, and Israel will then return the Golan 10 years later, if Syria is very, very good. Assad and the world know that, in any deal with Israel, you must get payment from Israel up front and in full or you will never see it.

This story gets six shovels out of a possible five on the Bullshit Meter. Netanyahu could have met with Assad 'anytime' since - or before - he became PM once again. He has not. He has refused ANY approach or negotiations with Syria. This story is 100% bullshit. Hot, stinking, gooey, and brown BULLSHIT. One can only wonder why an allegedly respectable newspaper would publish it.

The land captured from Syria in 1967 is not really yours. If you give it back and you get True Peace in exchange it will be worth it. Syria needs to give immediate full recognition with full diplomatic relations in exchange for a gradual, step-by-step pull-out from the Golan by Israel commencing immediately. To encourage the parties, perhaps the world community can throw each side some sweeteners like increased trade and tourism. Making peace with Syria would also go a long way towards keeping Iran away from your doorstep.
