Netanyahu: Progress made in talks with U.S.
Netanyahu says U.S., Israel working on compromise as diplomatic crisis with Washington remains unresolved.
By Barak Ravid, Natasha Mozgovaya and Haaretz Correspondents Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Barack Obama Middle East peace Israel newsPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that progress had been made toward resolving the diplomatic crisis with the United States over the contentious plan to build more Jewish homes in East Jerusalem.
"We are trying to find the golden path between our will to advance the peace process along with the United States, and between maintaining the standard policy of all Israeli governments," said Netanyahu just before boarding a plane back to Israel early Thursday.
Netanyahu is expected to land in Israel on Thursday evening. An hour after he arrives, the forum of seven will convene where the prime minister will update the ministers on the results of his Washington visit.
Despite the prime minister's comments, Netanyahu's meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday has been defined as a failure. Netanyahu had delayed his departure from Washington in an effort to seek consensus after an Israeli announcement of housing construction in East Jerusalem during U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's trip to Israel earlier this month prompted a chill in bilateral relations.
Due to the controversy with Obama, Netanyahu changed his schedule on Wednesday and canceled a number of interviews and press conferences, remaining at the Israeli Embassy throughout the day and giving directives to his advisers, Yitzhak Molcho and Ron Dermer, who held talks with Mideast envoy George Mitchell and senior White House officials.
On Wednesday afternoon, while Netanyahu's and Obama's advisers were meeting, the White House released a statement condemning Israel's plan to build 20 housing units on the site of the Shepherd Hotel in East Jerusalem.
The Prime Minister's Bureau released a statement that there were no limitations on rights of ownership in Jerusalem.
A meeting between Netanyahu and Obama on Tuesday and a shorter meeting later that day had failed to bridge their serious disagreement over the continuation of the peace process and construction in East Jerusalem. Obama asked Netanyahu to clarify his positions on a letter delivered last week to the administration about Israeli gestures to the Palestinian Authority and his willingness to seriously broach the issues in the indirect talks. The president also asked Netanyahu to put these assurances in writing.
Mitchell met with Netanyahu at his Washington hotel on Wednesday in a last-ditch effort to smooth over the rift.
Netanyahu's speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference Monday and his meetings with senators and Congress members Tuesday added to the tension, since he reiterated the message that there would be no concession regarding construction in Jerusalem.
Public remarks by Netanyahu associates also riled the White House, as they indicated they had gotten the administration to back down from its original demands on Israel. Senior administration officials challenged Netanyahu about the remarks.
Netanyahu arrived at the White House on Tuesday afternoon, and held one-on-one talks with Obama for 90 minutes. The meeting ended in serious disagreement, and in an unusual move, Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and their advisers retired to a side room in the White House for consultations, while Obama left for his residential quarters. Some 90 minutes later, Netanyahu requested a second meeting with the president, who returned to the Oval Office for a further half-hour conversation with the prime minister.
But the second meeting between the two also ended without resolving the dispute, and they could not even reach a consensus on a joint statement.
Netanyahu and Barak left for the Israeli Embassy in Washington. Molcho and Dermer, along with Netanyahu aide Nir Chefetz and Ambassador Michael Oren, to hold talks with administration representatives. Only at 2 A.M. did these consultations end, and Netanyahu and his entourage returned to their hotel.
Obama spoke yesterday by videoconference with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy about Iran and the Middle East peace process.

The annexation of East Jerusalem was declared ILLEGAL by UNSC Resolution 252 (1968)of 21 May 1968 UNSC Resolution 267 (1969) of 3 July 1969 UNSC Resolution 271 (1969) of 15 September 1969, UNSC Resolution 298 (1971) of 25 September 1971, UNSC Resolution 465 (1980) of 1 March 1980, UNSC Resolution 476 (1980) of 30 June 1980 And yet, Israel defies the International Community.
Cipora, I can't believe how low you fell. Accusing Obama of intentional isolation of Israel is beyond the realm of decency and logic. This whole issue of Jerusalem is a tempest in a teapot created by Netanyahu and his coalitionists. Evoking Jerusalem as an eternal capital of Israel raises the question which Jerusalem? Including Sheikh Jarrah? At the best Israel has a historical claim for the City of David which is basically Mount Zion and with a very liberal extension - the Jewish Quarter in the Old City and the Kotel. The Arabs who lived in Jerusalem for at least 1600 years for sure have a right to the areas they inhabit. This whole issue of "sacredness" of Jerusalem for such atheists as Lieberman and his bunch is a farce and justification of land grab. Where there is a will there is a way. Its possible to have two capitals in the city without dividing it, if division is "against popular consensus" (I am not even sure about that). Obama is trying to save Israel from itself.
Barack Hussein Obama II , Joseph Robinette "Joe" Biden, Jr. , George John Mitchell , and Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton - decided to harm Israel : 1. They don't let Israel attack Iranian nuclear weapons plants 2. They and others didn't stop Iran to get it... 3. They just giving Iran more time for more bombs 4. Iran train, equip, and financier terrorists in Lebanon , Syria , GAZA - Hamas and others include in PLO , Yemen , Saudi Arabia , Egypt , IRAQ... , Afghanistan , South America ...! , north America ...! , and more... - And those and other MF - just more soft to them... - Why ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtP9KU7FuaY&feature=fvw 5. After Mitchell and Biden visit they inflame the ARABS in Israel - as in every "peace process" - include OSLO - and you can see today the Arabs riots... OBAMA , Take your hands off Jerusalem ! Never was Palestinian nation - They are Arabs that have invaded/infiltrated/trickled into Israel under encouragement of the Ottoman and British occupiers but th
"GO TO WAR WITH LEBANON! It always works." - H. Nertz This is a very real possibility. Bibi is the kind of guy who thinks that a war will solve all his problems. What happens if the US does not respond with an immediate and massive resupply of munition used?
At least Netanyahu is not bragging about how he skunked Obama like he did last time. He is, however, lying to Israelis about how well things went.
Its not for Jews only, the Palestinian Muslims and Christians have a right to it. Once you and your Muslim-counterparts learn that then there might be hope that the land will not eventually just be wiped out completely, by one party or another. Sharing is caring children. Lets face it, the Jews wont give it up and neither will the Muslims. For God's sake grow up everyone and stop acting so childish.
Don't have a clue what you're talking about #12, Speaking for MYSELF, as well as everybody I know - we are FOR Obama and totally againt Israel, don't try and speak for an entire population, it really does make you sound stupid!
..and not to UN or Obama, or anyone else.
When the Oil runs out and no-one knows when, just as surely as the Oil was found oozing in the sands of the Saudi desert, we shall see fresh new caravans cropping up in the desert every day ..... whereas Israel will continue with her rapid progress in hi-tech, science, medicine and other fields where her brains will succeed where all else will fail.
Again, we see a primary sign of Israel's twisting the truth. The meeting was a collosal flap and Israel managed, once again, to publically embarrass the US with its announcement of 20 units in EJ. There was no press conference, no shaking of hands, no public appearnaces, no comments on departure. It failed. AIPAC had to bite their tongues as Hillary Clinton told them the US does not sanction construction and dispossesion in EJ and that Israel actions there are not conducive to restarting negotiations. At every opportunity, Israel has made a point of embarrassing the US, then feigning lack of communication between their governmental agencies. And they get away with it.
And what are the consequences as the religious fanatics in the Knesset swagger through East Jerusalem on their campaign to claim and dispossess. And what does the hapless netanyahu have to offer? The fault for the failure is the palestinians not conceding to Israel's land theft in their capital. And the US continues with this line of "our support for Israel's security is beyond question". This is not about security. Israel is one of the strongest militaries in the world. It has nuclear weapons. It is agressive to its neighbours whose land it continues to take. This has nothing to do with Israel's security and we really need to hear, publically, what the US is going to do as Israel continues to spit in its eye.
Exactly as you said they dont have the capability to apply the same standards to themselves as they do to others. What a major flaw for people pretending to know anything about morality. You know how spoiled children behave when they are used to getting everything they want and then when they grow up and you cut off the spoilness, what happens? they start viewing diplomacy, fairness, moderation...etc as signs of insults, threats, bigotry...etc. Thats what Cipora and friends do because they are used to the most powerful entity in the world to go along with what they want. Since young they have been systematically trained to have selective perception. This goes for extremists and people driven by ideology everywhere unfortunately...
In fact if you read the world press: "No progress in talks with the US" seem to be the overall reporting.
GR, I am a Palestinian who was born and raised in Jordan and I think i have a much MUCH better idea about this than you. Black september was almost 40 years ago and things have changed a lot since then. There are soo many Palestinians who have equal opportunities and rights and for the majority of both Jordanians and Palestinians living in Jordan dont have any problems with eachother. So please dont come and lecture me like you actually know my country since 35 years ago. So why dont you go there and find out yourself before you start blabering. Its just so pathetic when responders take the country that another responder is from and then lecture them about it as if: 1. they have no right to express an opinion 2. they have control over the history and present doings of their country Stick to the topic at hand you blind misguided idiot and stop making an arse out of yourself mate!
Made progress, oh yea? it was a disaster , my president kept him waiting in his car unti a junior secretary met him at the door, No pistures, no Obama flashing smile, no press briefing, nothing. He was left in the W.H. alone looking for the exit while Obama went to the west wing to have a nice dinner with his family. The real progress was when Obama went back for a short meeting and showed him the door. That war progress.
Jon, How nice of you to express your pride of Israel and what Israels produces.... Only, if the states cut of their money line althese things will dry out. Thus saying to the people who give you the money to do all these great things that they have to watch out seems to me a little, well ... beside the point, not?
To: a nice guy Most people would think that the fact that the Palestinians are willing to settle for 22% of their homeland (E J'lem, W Bank, Gaza) and accept the permanent loss of 78% is a massive concession Any thoughts on this ??
honest broker and has become a negotiator for opposite side. Who in Jewish community would support such a person?
You'll have to quote the PM to get a headline like that, I mean when the whole wide world write about the LACK of progress.
... within his own coalition... who would be even more bigoted than he is... they are among the shakers-and-the-movers within his own retinue...
The usual process in these cases is that the Israeli PM tells the president what he is going to do and then he gives the president a miniscule fig leaf to cover his shame. It seems that Obama is not interested in wearing a fig leaf, nor is he interested in providing one for Bibi to wear. The best thing that Obama can do now is stop all American support of settlement building. Since every American dollar going to Israel frees up Israeli money to go to settlement building, let Israel decide where to put their money, but let it be their own money and not that of the American taxpayer. If Israel chooses settlements over defense, then we will know that all that American money wasn't really necessary. If they chose defense over settlements, then the American action will have been a blow to the hated settlement enterprise.
Talking about Obama the demagogue who wasted a whole year on his health bill trying to be the great consensus maker makes you sound rather foolish. Especially as he has simultaneously placed diplomacy back on an equal footing with military force after baby Bush removed it entirely from the scene. History will judge him alright, but I would not expect it to be in the laughably lopsided manner in which you try and present him here. What a shame there are too many Israel supporters who think chastisement and home truths should only be applied to one side in this conflict. How silly of them to imagine that this might somehow bring peace.
Wasseem, you write about Israle oppressing Palestinians - The Israelis are amateurs at this compared to your country, Jordan! You hypocrites keep the Palestinians in misery, while criticising Israel - the Hashemites are more colonialists than the Jews in the Middle East. We remember Black September....don;t give any lectures!
A victory for Israel!. Bibi goes to Washington and announces a continuation of the land theft and isn't arrested or deported. Mazal Tov!
Kadima 28 seats Likud 27 seats Labor 13 seats. Out of 120 Knesset seats.
The approval of construction at the Shepherd Hotel in Sheikh Jarrah, announced before Bibi met Obama.....Obviously someone in Israel is trying, and succeeding, in making their PM look like an idiot
It's high time for Ehud to leave the coalition and court Livni, Bibi has defacto been asked to step down.
trouble with bibi is that he thinks that israel's war is with the usa and he has to progress on peace talks with them. no, bibi, no! your war is with the arabs! enough with this silly denial.
Our real DADDY the ALMIGHTY not Obama/Clinton/Bin Laden & Co or USA. IN G D WE TRUST
It always works.
I think you've got the figures wrong. British Palestine was divided into some 70% for Jordan and some 30% for Israel which Israel has now to share with some Arabs called Palestinians. Check your facts, look up British Mandate of Palestine around 1917...
It's interesting reading and a must for those that would like to see what is asked of Israel and the PA. -"Israel takes all necessary steps to help normalise Palestinian life. Israel withdraws from Palestinian areas occupied from September 28, 2000 and the two sides restore the status quo that existed at that time, as security performance and co-operation progress. Israel also freezes all settlement activity, consistent with the Mitchell report." "In Phase I, the Palestinians immediately undertake an unconditional cessation of violence according to the steps outlined below; such action should be accompanied by supportive measures undertaken by Israel. Palestinians and Israelis resume security co-operation based on the Tenet work plan to end violence, terrorism, and incitement through restructured and effective Palestinian security services. Palestinians undertake comprehensive political reform in preparation for statehood, including drafting a Palestinian constitution, and free, fair and open elections upon the basis of those measures.
i realise that many people would cherish disarming israel. obama has refused some conventional weapons. but israel is not going to give up her unconventional weapons, which alone stand between annihilation and the jewish state.
Oh dear, Bibi, what happened? Did the Americans effectively sling you out the back door and tell you not to come back until you had grown up? What, no photoshoot with the Prez? Well, why would Obama want to spoil his historic week being pictured with an internationally despised leader? No, perhaps it was better you were forced to skulk off. Good luck selling your visit to the folks back home hahahaha.
...but seriously, 20 units? Yes yes yes, if you wish to stop Jewish construction in East Jerusalem, sooner or later every single unit becomes a "threat to peace" but we have to be alert to what is happening here. No other administration requested that the united (and annexed) capital of Jerusalem be considered (united) as an "obstacle to peace" and potentially or in actuality an illegal settlement en toto (including, of course, renovations in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City) before resumption of rounds of negotiations with Palestinian interlocutors. This is unprecedented. The President of the United States not only is not "pro-Israel" but is molding a policy that is not even "balanced". For reasons known only to his heart, his ideology, his soul, or his petulance, he has become an advocate and field blocker for the Palestinian Authority. He may believe he has the strength of will to force Israel to go along, but he is losing very quickly any reservoir of faith, confidence, or trust.
You believe anything. Now if there had been a photograph of the meeting with Obama then that would be different. Netanyahu is trying to con the Israeli people who task their Prime Minister with the special relationship Israel has with the United states as the most important job in his office. Australia kicked out the Israeli diplomat yet?
we never had talks with the arabs or the arabs countries like saudi arabi lebenon syria jordan iraq kuait qatar etc except for egypt face to face. DID WE??? dont think so. maybe america should force us and all these arab countries come to america and have a gooooodddddd looooonnnnngggg talk.
IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT !!!!
Deciet, trickery, darn lies...nothing works. Who is this man with a spine in the White House? Doesn't he get it..."nod nod wink wink"? "For 42 years we have been building and it hasn't hurt the Peace Process". That quote was from the Peace Laureate Shimon Peres. As clueless as the rest, to 'what has happned'. The world is finally united in the policy of enforcing peace in Palestine, it has always been the US acting as an obstacle. No more, now they take the lead instead. How long can the Israeli Labour party stay in the coalition? Barak and Livni could save a bit of Israel that Bibi has unwillingly given up. His idea of a speedy "facts on the ground" campaign from day one, is now turning into an American "red line". 'No more'!
if i were you, i would worry about the muslim brotherhood and hamas. should israel withdraw from the wb, your government will be endangered. however, you might be thrilled at the thought--except king abdullah will not go quietly.
mr netanyahu must change course or else he is done.
No joint statement, no agreement, Netanyahu stays holed up in the embassy and emerges with his 'golden path'? Pathetic! He thought he could play with and manipulate this the American administartion just like he does with the petty politicians in his coalition back home. His misreading of the gravity of the situation could be extremely costly for Israel. Unfortunately his coalition with continue, in order to devide the spoils of the budget while taken a blind eye to the brewing international storm.
No, Obama is not making a fool of himself. However you are doing a great job making a fool of yourself by posting such nonsense. If you think that such posts benefit Israel, you are deluding yourself.
The only real threat to Israel now is Iranian nukes. That's what Bibi wants dealt with. But sanctions won't stop the Iranian nuclear energy program which might lead to an Iranian nuclear weapon program. And bombing the Iranian nuclear energy program would only delay it a couple of years at most, and would definitely turn it into a nuclear weapons program. Bibi could offer to give up Israel's nukes in exchange for turning the whole middle east into a nuclear-weapon-free zone with stringent inspections. That gives Iran a way to back down. It gives Israel a chance to start cleaning up their radioactive contamination problem instead of making more. It saves Israel considerable money -- nuclear weapons programs are not cheap. It gets attention off the settlements and onto something far more important. If Iran refuses then it makes Iran look very bad at no cost to Israel. Bibi would look like a great man. Go for it!
It's now or never. Israel has to be forced to give up the dream of greater Israel in exchange for peace and world acceptance. The Americans understand this, and Bibi will be given no quarter.
Israel is a sovereign state, governed by a Parliamentary government, with her Prime Minister as Benjamin Netanyahu. His honor, the PM, will do what he needs to do to ensure Israel's best interest. I wish the US had a leader as he is. Netanyahu will run Israel, and Obama should just not meddle in the affairs with bribery. Remember that a lot that comes out of Israel is worth more than just paper with ink - it is technology, intelligence, and relationship. Obama forgets all of this because he wants change to come to America, and wants Israel to comply with the change that Israel will not have America as her ally. That's ok though because Israel will prevail, even if she stands alone. What is starting to come into view is the fact that we, as Americans, should start feeling more scared to be in the US than in Israel.
The whole world is tired of you. You make fights with Turkey, U.K., Australia and the U.S. How stupid and arrogant can u b ! But in Israel they think like a little child : 'the whole wordl is against us. YEs/ and it is your own fault !
to build a peace. Either the principle is force or you follow legal principles. Peace is very tightly bound to justice. Benjamin can?t accept that East Jerusalem is not Jewish or a part of Israel, that is the problem.
Dr L Brnd is right in his analysis. However, some distinctions have to be drew. There was absolutely not need to make provocation with Beth Yonatah, Sheikh Jarraz, etc etc. People that have a full knowledge of Jerusalem remember that small size beatifull unified Jerusalem including Ramot, Gilo, Ramat Eshkol, the old city. Building in most of the rest is unnecesary provocation. The whole idea of linking Maale Adumim with Jerusalem is magalomanic, and basically contributes to undermine Israel case in Jerusalem. Israel attempt to transform Jerusalem from a nice unified city into a monster stretching to the Dead see is doomed.
Israel chooses fanatic settlers over peace. That has become clear to the World.
LIER... no progress was made. Not even a common statement. Last minute failure meeting. Israeli relations: 1) With USA, worst since decades. 2) UK. Diplomat expelled 3) EU strongly condemns Israel 4) UN urges Israel to stop violating International Law 5) Australia threatens to take strong steps against Israel if passport fraud is proven. 6) Turkey, worst relations in 1948 7) Strong Palestinian popular resistance being established, including strong BDS movement. Thanks bibi for showing the real face of Israel. I wonder where the Israeli people would like to see themselves 10 years from now. Isolated Pariah Country, or country with no more occupation and Peace with neighbors. Remember, we are not in the 1970's or 1980's. We are in the 2010's, where the world can easily get information and news about Israel's Occupation, war crimes, apartheid and aggression against Palestinians easily through the Internet.
... eloquence does not disguise twisted facts...
US policy on Jerusalem has never changed, not even under Bush and Obama has not changed it either. The conquest has never been recognized. Ramat Schlomo is not part of Jerusalem. The acquisition is not legitimate. The US supports Israel's existence, NOT its expansion. The US has extended it nuclear umbrella to Israel. Nobody has ever, in the history of the world, used nukes on a country to which the US Nuclear Umbrella has been extended. Obama and the US support Israel, not its expansionism. Bibi is just another politician. His policy is not holy writ. Bibi is not Moses nor the Messiah.
It seems you continue to let your wishes run away with your brain. YOU may well buy everything Israel does, but many, if not most, Americans are tired of the way Israel treats Palestinians and the way it pushes against the US, when most Americans figure it owes us. Twice (the years 70 and 135) Israel decided it could take on the world. Maybe it's time for a third lesson.
be bound by the san remo convention !! arbitration is based on real law not ad hoc de facto !
all can wait until the violent heroes of the past are gone, berried, on both sides, but more on the Palestinian side to erase the memories of Amin Husseini and Arafat-Meshal.. let us promote a constructive responsible non violence and the future can be good.
Netanyahu put himself in this position, he must be deluded to think that he can come to America and turn some screws on the leader of the land. All you morons putting the blame on Obama need to take a look in the mirror...he is nothing but a fair person looking out for AMERICAS interest only, not yours. Your fate is being disconnected from ours, better make friends with your neighbors.
These two continents will topple financially and economically, living much high above their resources, on stock exchange manipulations, while the Muslim and Far east and South American worlds are spewing so many people into the world that the REAL worth of work is 2$ a day. In the larger perspective (not considering Israel) things are not good for the Western World, and the civilization of the industrial revolution is now being wiped out by globalism and demographic changes
they are liberals and dont like apartheid, dont like squatters, and dont think israeli need e.j'lem...they are for peace and want a 2 state solution like 20 yrs ago
Although many of us believe that the President's fixation on East Jerusalem building for Israeli Jewish citizens is destructive and one-sided, the down side of this endeavor is encroachment and displacement of Arab citizens (with compensation) in certain sectors. In any event, there are now reports that a mechanism is actually being put in place to freeze further initiatives, yes, for construction in East Jerusalem. Stay tuned.
Please, try to mend your ways. You would make a better advocate for Israel.
We're all sick of this. How about submitting the Middle East dilemma to binding arbitration. Each side chooses an arbitrator, the two arbitrator choose a third arbitrator and the decision of the majority of the arbitrators prevails. And that's the end of it.
It is not and never was the question of settlers, Even though Obama wants to put it this way. The Muslim world is winning Israel and the West are on a slippy way out . God save my children and Grand children.
Obama must think that serially humiliating the prime minister of Israel will give him points with the Arabs. Obama has no conception of what it means to be a statesman. Like all demagogues, he confuses use of force with leadership. He will be judged by history accordingly. On point of tactics, Obama miscalculated very seriously with his dictates for "freeze." He only gave the Palestinians the perfect excuse to refuse to negotiate. However, that might well have been his goal. He wants to isolate Israel internationally to the extent possible. Iran is the biggest beneficiary of this machination. Iran has been the biggest beneficiary of US and Western perfidy.
80% of the Jews people in USA voted for Barak Hussein Obama an undercover Muslin. They say! are smart people?
Most American jews are secular and liberal. They hate Goerge Bush, they hate themselves and they hate the Christian fundamentalists. The real reason for Israel's support in the USA is the alliance between jews and the far more important and numerous Christian fundamentalists who want us all to return to biblical israel so that jesus can come back and kill us. Bush himself is a Christian fundamentalist. That is why he is nice to the jews. Most liberal jews do not support Israeli settlements or the annexation of jerusalem.Obama will not change because your real base is the christian fundamentalists who will never vote for him. He is trying to rally his liberal base in the US--liberals are mostly antisemites these days. He doesnt care about the jews because they will vote for him anyway. I hope you annihilate your enemies. Obama will still be there in 2013, and the long term demographics here disfavor republicans. So go with G-d, but don't expect money. Your influence is not so great here.
For those that think Obama is a fool who needs a lesson, that birth certificate hiding Muslim in the deep of his sold soul. Even if this was all to be true, it's still Israel's problem. He is namely not the president of Holland, Belgium or the Fuji's but of the USA. And does the USA survives because of Israeli money, weapons and jets, political, economical and scientific back-up or is it the other way around? Israel is a cowboy, Obama is an angry Wyatt Earp and the ME is a saloon in Tombstone. Face-off time.
Israel has her own bombs so you do not have to worry.
patriot should criticize the decision by our Administration. Nothing to salvage ... Hopefully Bibi will decide not to sink another American naval vessel on humanitarian grounds. ps. 20 new apartments in Miami - real threat ...
The Palestinian (or as you so elegantly phrase it, "Arab") concession is already built in, in that basically 80% of the Palestinians' homeland is now Israel. Israel as such has made no concessions. Israel has actually made reverse concessions in that it is taking over increasing areas of the Occupied Palestinian Territories. There are two groups claiming national rights of self-determination in Israel-Palestine. One group, the Israelis, have self-determination in 80& of that land. The other group, the Palestinians, enjoy zero rights in 20% of the land. Those are the facts. Open your mind and your heart to other people.
patriot should criticize the decision by our Administration. Nothing to salvage ... Hopefully President Obama will decide not to bomb Israel from Saudi bases on humanitarian grounds. ps. 20 new apartments in Jerusalem - real threat ...
The miscalculation here is that Israel's enemies will make war, the US will not support Israel, and the Jewish state will have to fall back on a nuclear strike as its last defense. This is how Armageddon begins. Diplomats do not condemn partners to negotiation or dictate its terms. Rome did. And Rome fell. God help us from this.
It would have helped if Netanyahu had not chosen his two big moments. The first was at AIPAC where he announced his defiance. The second was when as he was meeting with Obama his government announced further construction in East Jerusalem. The affront was clear. It coud be nothing but intentional, and the lies of the Netanyahu government afterwards convinced no one. Netanyahu is clearly dedicated to offending the USA at ever opportunity. He will never moderate his actions. The USA has two possible choices. Craven submission to Netanyahu or resistance required for self-respect. Bibi has gambled everything on Obama caving in following the latest humiliation.
think about it...gulf arabs can keep iran very well supplied with everything...happened today in arab league meeting they will cossy up to iran...and i told you so as did obamam but zio's never listen
This is simply amateurish. How in the WORLD does Bibi think that he can circumvent the Whitehouse? Does he REALLY believe that the US Congress will trump the President? Obama is more popular than both parties ---together. It's clear that Bibi came to US with a divide & conquer strategy. What's NOT clear is: How did he imagine that he could accomplish that? The administration can't lose face over this. Eric Cantor and the other clowns can't help Bibi here. There's only 1 Commander-in-chief and it's NOT Lindsay Graham, Joe Lieberman or John McCain.
Israelis are overwhelmingly united on united Jerusalem staying united. PERIOD. With the PA state getting a capital in Abu Dis where their parliament is. Here too - all Republicans and the vast majority of Democrats in Congress take the same position, as does the vast majority of Americans in poll after poll. Supported by a 1995 law passed by Congress that says same thing: united Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and only of Israel. In this country, the President makes foreign policy "with the advice and consent of Congress". Obama does not have the "consent of Congress" in this case, nor the backing of the US voters. Bibi should stand firm! Obama has no choice but to back down if he ever wants to see another dime for Abbas and the PLO. Veto-proof majority in Congress will block him. His party is panic-stricken at the disaster in the November elections Obama is creating for them, and his health care "victory", opposed by most Americans (55% in last poll) is hardly an asset. WATCH.
maybe the Pals can give up east Jerusalem, and give up half of whats left of the west bank, than you will have another area as big as Gaza for the Pals, the question what are going to do with Mil or so Pals living in refugee camps?, there is also another refugee camp in Lebanon.
Shalom...I love Israel and I believe in the Bible that God will gathre HIS people from everypart of the world back to HIS land, but I think its time to throw Israel off in the bush so that they may learn some lesson. Don't worry..when Iran bomb Israel,USA always there for you, just look recently, USA vote against 3 UN resolution. What we need is ur commitment for peace Bibi.
Both the US and Israel have failed diplomatically in this instance. Israel in particular could be more tactful in announcing building decisions in Jerusalem. The US has to weigh the strategic importance of this relationship with Iran in mind. Obama will lose the Jewish vote if he continues to undermine Israeli interests in order to attempt pleasing Arabs. Obama will start to look like Jimmy Carter and that is about as bad as you can get!
Better we are a US "enemy" as look what the US did to its "friends" and how they deserted them -Vietnam, Cambodia and worst of all Iran - the ultimate betrayal and the blame for which was the US under Carter and the mess the world is now facing especially Israel as a result of the US
Israel must do what is in its self-interest regarding security, whether Obama likes it or not. Dividing Jerusalem would put Israel in great peril. I'm proud of Bibi for not giving into arm-twisting.
Barak Hussein seems to forget who runs Israel - and it certainly is not he nor his 2 self hating Jews. Bibi determines what's good for the Israeli population - and that's all there is to say.
"and they could not even reach a consensus on a joint statement" So they can't even agree on how grave the disagreement between them is? You are in very, very real trouble, Bibi....
...overheard a couple show-biz types in a Starbucks speculating about the possibility of Mel Brooks making a movie of all this; maybe Eddie Murphy as Obama, Ben Stiller as Netanyahu...but who the heck do you get to play Foreign Minister Lieberman--Vin Diesel?
Nothing Bibi does- except relinquishing Israel's claim to Jerusalem as its capital- will satisfy Obama. Bibi is better off standing his ground than to surrender to Obama's absurd ideas for peace in the region. Only a craven fool would accede to Obama's demands and I don't think that even Livni would go that far.
Reciprocity or nothing, Obama: get it? 2012 can't get here soon enough. Hopefully the 80% of US Jews that voted for this inexperienced anti-Israeli community organizer will have their heads on straight by then.
