The head of the Knesset Committee on Foreign Workers called yesterday for Israel to kill any Bedouin who smuggles illegal immigrants into Israel.

"Snipers should be put in place and the Bedouin who leads the convoys of infiltrators should be taken down," MK Yaakov Katz (National Union ) said at the opening meeting of a Knesset caucus for Israelis harmed by illegal immigrants.

"That's the only way we'll be able to stop them," he added.

Katz also said all the Bedouin who live near Israel's border with Egypt - through which the army says 13,350 illegal immigrants arrived in the country this year - should be arrested if they help the smugglers.

"All Bedouin who live within 50 kilometers of the border and cooperate with the smugglers from Sinai should be arrested and incarcerated," he said.

The suggestion was part of a program Katz is spearheading that is aimed at reducing what he calls the "demographic terrorism" of illegal immigration.
