Ministry re-examines heart surgeon inquiry
Senior Health Ministry officials are concerned that the ministry's director-general, Dr. Boaz Lev, plans to cancel a disciplinary complaint lodged against cardiologist Dr. Eitan Schnir from Beilinson Hospital, following the death of a patient in 1997. The patient died when the operating team Schnir headed implanted an incorrect valve in his heart. A complaint was filed against Schnir in January 2001, but it did not go to a disciplinary committee. Lev said he had not asked for the complaint to be dismissed, but to be re-examined to see if Schnir alone was responsible or if the death indicated a systems failure at Beilinson.
