Ministry approves marijuana for 14-year-old cancer patient

Marijuana recommended to treat side effects of chemotherapy, including pain, loss of appetite.

By Dan Even Tags: Israel news

A 14-year-old girl with hematological cancer may receive marijuana, the Health Ministry decided.

The girl has been receiving treatment at a pediatric oncology clinic at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for several months, and is suffering from the side effects of intensive chemotherapy, including pain and loss of appetite.

Her doctors recommended marijuana to treat these problems.

The Health Ministry approved the request last week, and she began receiving marijuana joints on Friday.

The hospital said that although smoking by children is problematic, the joints have improved her condition.

Ayelet Ben Barak, a senior physician in the department treating the teen, said, "Because of the problematic nature of smoking at these ages, we are looking into administrating the marijuana by other means."

An 88-year-old woman with chronic pain has asked to receive marijuana cookies.

About 800 patients in Israel currently receive medicinal marijuana. Fewer than 10 are under age 18.

You can imagine the pain he had and if doctors accepted give him some marijuana I should accepte it also. He got much morfin and I can say it makes sick. We must do all we can for help people in pain.

(trying to answer Dave's question) and warmongers and greedmongers and gay bashers and women bashers and child bashers and patriarchal ways and to those who gain money or ego from alcohol supremacism. And/or why share power with everyone when you can declare a group that's a little different designated scapegoat and have righteous fury fun grinding them under your heel? But with much help from medicinal cannabis, awareness is growing (rapidly at the moment in the U.S.) that cannabis, while not problem free, is quite benign compared to its problem child competition alcohol.

Dutch, I'm sure the Palestinian Arabs have plenty of weed of their own. They don't need to come to Israel to smoke it. By the way, are you from NY? I was just reading that people from NY are the unhappiest of all people, and you always seem to be unhappy, especially when it comes to your pet peeves. When are you going to disengage yourself from the keyboard and do something really worthwhile for the people you feel so sorry for? "Allowing the use of marijuana to improve the quality of life for a 14yr old Israeli teen (caner pt)yet turning around and denying many Palestinian children access to life saving and sparing drugs."

It's actually quite amazing how marijuana can treat different illnesses. Medical marijuana became legal in my state in the US and I know several people who have benefitted medically. Marijuana really is a miracle drug

It's only a few hundred bucks and it will get plenty of use over time. Hash brownies or other cannabis infused food totally avoids the smoking issue, but takes longer to have an effect.

the picture illustrating the article is misleading
    • not sorry

The picture set up to illustrate the article is misleading. Medical grass is Israel is not delivered in medical boxes like it is showed on the picture but in plastic bags exactly like it can be bought illegally in the street. It is delivered by the producers themselves to the patients that sometimes are abused by the producers if they don't act as expected by the producers. According to what I see and the patients feedback, medical marijuana is barely efficient against chronic pain but it makes the patients feel better. If the patient is very seriously ill, it does even not make him stoned. But it is very efficient for treating eating disorder. This feedback is the result of 3 years observing patients taking medical marijuana. The law itself is very good as the patients says that they feel better, even if the treatment itself has few effects on the pain itself. To the ones that doubt it, let's be serious, sometimes chronic pain is so strong that even morphine is not efficient.

Allowing the use of marijuana to improve the quality of life for a 14yr old Israeli teen (caner pt)yet turning around and denying many Palestinian children access to life saving and sparing drugs. This is the Dr Jekylll and Mr. Hyde of the Israeli medical & justice establishment and I find nothing noble in this lop-sided gesture towards an Israeli teen. Indeed, it shows the disconnect with reality and humanitarian law. And I will go so far to call it an outright institutional murder of Palestinian kids. I recall from reading the Nuremberg Trials such officials were held liable by the court. Dutch

I agree that MJ is harmless but it has psychological effects. and halucinations at this age can be scary for this child who havnt reached his psychological adulthood. but its better than having insupportable pain. for sure its more harmful psychologically. It should be hard. i hope the child gets well soon...

    brain tumor and cannabis oil...

    • 10:54

Doctors in Spain injected very aggressive brain tumors with THC and found they diminished tumor mass, my 6 year old son has just had a massive brain tumor removed, why is this treatment relegated to the sidelines of research? THC oil is easy to make and very cheap compared to regular treatments and can't be patented....maybe that's why! See phoenixtears.ca
