Lieberman used Africa trip to lay groundwork for arms deals

Israeli sources: Defense Ministry, arms manufacturers' lobby have hijacked Israeli foreign policy.

By Yossi Melman Tags: Israel news Avigdor Lieberman Israel defense

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman returns Friday from a visit in five African states, where in addition to discussing Africa's internal problems, he and his entourage laid the groundwork for weapons deals.

While Lieberman talked with African leaders about the hunger, water shortage, malnutrition and plagues afflicting their nations, the visit was also used to advance arms deals.

The Foreign Ministry officials on the trip were accompanied by arms dealers and weapons manufacturers. The latter included, among others, executives from Soltam, Israel Military Industries, Israel Aerospace Industries, Silver Shadow advanced security systems Ltd., Israel Shipyards and Elbit Systems.

Although Lieberman declared he would reactivate Israeli foreign policy in certain African states, past experience has shown that the Defense Ministry and arms manufacturers' lobby have hijacked Israeli foreign policy in recent decades and subordinated it to their needs, Israeli sources said.

No deals were signed on this trip. But Foreign Ministry officials estimate Africa's business potential at some $1 billion, in addition to the $3 billion of merchandise and services Israel currently exports to the continent.

Lieberman began his visit in Ethiopia, where he met the prime minister and foreign minister. They discussed ways in which Israel could help as part of the Foreign Ministry's projects in biotechnology, agriculture, water conservation and helping to contain AIDS.

Ethiopia, which has long had friendly relations with Israel, is willing to allow Israeli military agents operate there.

The country holds strategic importance based on its proximity to Arab states and its position overlooking sailing routes to Eilat and the Suez Canal.

Its importance is enhanced by Iran's increasing involvement in the region and al-Qaida's growing presence, especially in Somalia, in recent years.

Officials assume that these issues were discussed in Lieberman's talks, which were not reported to the media.

Lieberman's visit in Kenya was similar. Lieberman met Kenyan Deputy President Kalonzo Musyoka, and the foreign minister there, and said Israel was ready to share its experience in halting the desertification and turning the wilderness into arable land.

Here too they discussed issues that were not reported. Kenya has assisted Israel in the past in anti-terror activity, as indicated by releasing the hijacked airplane in Operation Entebbe, in Uganda, and extraditing Germans who worked with Palestinian terrorists.

On Wednesday Lieberman visited Nigeria, one of Africa's largest, richest and most important states, which hosts a relatively large Israeli business community. Nigeria is also an important market for Israeli weapons.

Lieberman also visited Uganda and Ghana.

Dino, Kindly notice on the news programs that when you see the "Freedom Fighters" of Africa, take careful notice of the weaponary, Most weapons are either made in China or Russia. The Chinese made AK47 costs somewhere between 150 to 200 USD. The tanks may be old, yet they are Russian, The artillery is also Russian. Just where do we see Israeli made weapons.? The shining light unto nations... Israel builds clinics, supplies the latest technology in Agriculture. Surely, Israel is a shining light comparative to China or Russia. I do concede that Israel may sell communications equipment,Radar and Intel sharing Services. Buona jornata.

Make no mistake, arms deals to the third world cause mass misery as tribal and political differences cause civilian deaths, ethnic cleansing, child soldiers, mass rape, and every other horror of war. Even the so-called democratic regimes in Nigeria and Kenya are heavily involved in tribal feuds, so people that arm either or both sides are morally responsible for the tragedy. Israel should be selling agricultural and hi technology and goods to the third world, and not participate in blood letting. Shame on Leiberman, shame on Israel for pursuing the dirty business of arms sales and letting money overide conscience and morality. What ever happened to the idea of a light to all the nations?

Israel must do more to achieve peace in the Middle East if it wants to improve diplomatic and business ties with Africa's most populous country, said Nigeria's Foreign Minister. (Silobreaker 9.9.09) Yahoo News ABUJA (AFP) 8 September 09 "Nigeria sees Israel losing international good will." by Ola Owoniyi. Israel's grip on the West Bank in defiance of international opinion is denying Israel the goodwill it is due, said Nigeria's Foreign Minister Ojo Maduekwi told his Israeli counterpart on Tuesday. "You are not touching that good will because of the distraction of violence, the distraction of holding onto too much land which you had already been asked either through the Camp David accord or indeed through UN resolutions to give up for the sake of peace, he told Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090908/wl_mideast_afp/mideastconflictdiplomacyisraelpalesti

who decided you get to judge which african country needs weapons? do you live in Ethiopia? uganda? why with africa does the west get to decide what those africans need for their states?? you don't understand their situations, which is obvious since you just said an entire diverse continent doesn't need any weapons.. how the hell do you know? who appointed westerners to decide what africans need?

weapons makers sell weapons. color me shocked. every nation of the world does it, canada supplies ammunition to saudi arabia, etc. is this supposed to be something to be ashamed of? countries need arms. whether they get used in a moral fashion is on the purchaser not the seller.. is every one who sells beer accountable for drunk driving? is a knife salesman responsible when a husband cuts up his wife? is the world supposed to look on africa as a child? europe should decide for africa whether their armies need weapons, maybe some of this colonialist mentality lives on... every nation can buy weapons, but not those primitive africans right? canada can have guns, australia, asia, all of europe, america and latin america, but those blacks in africa are what, the only states in the world that can't buy weapons for their armies?? i suppose etheopia could try telling the somolis on their borders to play nice or they'll get big daddy UN to come and give them a slap on the wrist?

While Africa's people are hungry and destitute and in need of government help, Israel, as well as the US, rushes to sell the instruments of death to these corrupt leaders. Shame on the African leaders who are buying these weapons of death. Shame on those who are making blood money from these sales. What kind of a world is this when arms makers and dealers are allowed to profit from the misery of others? Not a good world one might say. As long as there is a profit from the making and selling of the instruments of death and destruction there will never be peace. Perhaps this is the goal of those whose profits are soaked in blood. If there is peace there will be no need for their horrible products.

Israel is only the 4th or 5th largest exporter of arms in the world. (USA, Russia, France and Britain are exporting MORE arms than Israel). NO ONE HERE mentioned that . The focus is on Israel. If there are no exports , there is no income, but that is what all the Israel bashers here want. Double talk at its best.....

This is where the big bucks are made, arming the third world just like the USA had no problem arming Iraq, or Russia arming Iran or France and the UK arming who they want. Anyone seen the figures on how much is made selling death, I bet it's a lot more than selling life giving medical tech.

"peace lover" i.e. Israel hater, have you ever condemned Russia for shipping arms to Iran? Or Iran sending weapons of destruction to Hizbollah and Hamas? Of course not. Certain nations are arms exporters, Israel among them. For obvious defense reasons Israel needs to be militarily strong so the country has an advanced arms industry. That's why they are in a position to export arms. But of course your double standard of condemning arms sales only applies to Israel. Some "peace lover" you are. You talk out of two sides of your mouth.
