Israeli woman refuses ultra-Orthodox dictate to move to back of bus
When the passenger refused to move to the designated back seats, even when police arrived, the bus continued on its way, despite her refusal.
By Revital Blumenfeld Tags: Jerusalem Orthodox Jews Israel travelA woman passenger on a public bus from Ashdod to Jerusalem Friday was told by an ultra-Orthodox male passenger to move to the back of the bus. The man held the door of the bus open and would not allow it to move for approximately 30 minutes.
When other passengers began to complain about the delay, the driver called the police. The policeman who arrived on the scene spoke with the man and then also asked the woman, Tanya Rosenblit, to move to the back of the bus. When she refused, the man who had been holding the door alighted and the bus continued on its way.

Rosenblit, who said she was dressed modestly, was traveling on Egged bus 451 to get to work in Jerusalem. She said a Haredi man, who boarded two stops after she did, refused to allow the driver to close the door after he saw Rosenblit. Rosenblit said the man called her a derogatory word for a non-Jewish woman, and told the driver it was his right to have her sit in the back and that he had paid to be able to do so.
At that point, Rosenblit said other passengers called on the driver to intervene because they were late. Some wanted to get off the bus and have their money refunded. At that point, Rosenblit said, the driver called the police.
The policeman who arrived on the scene took the man aside for "a pleasant conversation," Rosenblit said, after which the policeman asked her if she would move to the back of the bus.
After Rosenblit refused, the man who had held the door got off and Rosenblit continued on her way. "The reason I am posting this story is not to declare that Orthodox Jews as pure evil ... I want to point out that this is a social and educational problem," Rosenblit wrote on her Facebook page.
Egged spokesman Ron Ratner condemned the incident, but said such incidents were increasing and that Egged's directives clearly prohibit the driver from "permitting or creating any separation on the bus unless it is voluntary," and instructing to call the police in such cases. Ratner advised Rosenblit to submit a complaint to Egged's ombudsman so the incident could be scrutinized more closely.

But Rosa was not a television news producer.....not quite the same really. Was it a quiet day at the station?
The gentleman stated that it was his right to have the woman sit in the back of the bus. what he should realize is that in a truly civilized society, his rights end when they infringe on the rights of another person. Once he realizes that he deserves no special accomodation based on gender, his world will be a better place.
If you want to live in a Theocracy, with its strict religious laws, then move to Iran.
i thihk that this will desroy the country. w'are going in the oppesite derectioc of the middle east.
Others on the bus should have forcibly removed the hero and then let him charge them with assault.
I never hear about cases of this nature. How do haredi women deal with this situation. Surely it cannot be the case that a haredi woman may sit next to a man. Is there something they have to teach their men and children?
because in Russia you can't sit on the back of bus. Back of bus sits on you.
Please do
This does happen in NYC in some of the orthodox neighborhoods in Brooklyn.
it was stopped at once.
jews. Still religious crazy after all these millenia. Fit to be allies of america
The police are required to uphold the law, not break it for a quiet life. This office should be found and suspended. The issue is not the behavour of EGGED but of the police office who attended the incident. How many other women have been intimidated by the police to move??????
The article states the police asked her to move, not ordered. I agree that they should not have done that and likely attempted to muscle her with authority but we should not assume. Further I agree that the police should have protected established rights rather than attempt to acheive tranquility.
Are these guys all on Viagra, that the mere sight of a Woman is enough to make them deviate from their spiritual thoughts and discussions on the Torah? Are their wives so ugly?
I don't have any sympathy with any of this, but for people who believe shaking hands with a person of the opposite gender is a problem, being shaken about on a bus and rubbing against female bodies must necessarily be problematic. Quite easily solved if men give up their seats for a woman or sit next to a man without the need for further gender segregation.
Are they all on Viagra? That the mere sight of a Woman excites them so much they can't keep focused on garbled rubbish. Could it be that when they get the sheet out with their wives they're thinking about the woman they saw on the bus instead of the Chumash. Only THEY have the answers.
Do these haredi object to sitting next to non-jewish people too? I have never heard about this.
That's the difference from Moslem countries. Just try to build a church or synagogue in Saudi Arabia, or let a woman try to drive a car there. There is no comparison.
Not only do you sip up welfare benefits for doing nothing, but you also demand that the people who pay for your benefits adjust their lives to your backward, medieval religious beliefs? Get a job, you parasites. And take a bath.
but I suppose that these folks do indeed need to be shocked into the reality of 21st century Israel! I give your comment a 50% "like" for general thought presented and a 50% "don't like" for presenting it in an overly violent manner. What am I saying? I am saying you are correct but we (you and I) need NOT fall into THEIR trap of violence not even in our language!
Telling the truth is not violence. It's about time that people stand up to these Haredim. They aren't convinced by your niceties, it emboldens them to do things like the ones described in this article.
The overlying factor in this type behavior is hate for women. If you are of a sect that believes that women are "lower" than men in value, or cause evil (not auguring the evil part, i've been married for 30 years :) then it is to the member of this portion of religion to remove himself from those outside his believe system. No travel, no contact, no interaction with those "others". I say they need their own homeland, Iran is like minded on some tenets, im sure they will welcome you with open arms...
and I for one am very proud of her and support her 100%
The Rabbi's and Ayatollah's dress the same, say the same and do the same. Why not make a bond and integrate Israel and Iran into one religious paradise of hate?
When they start burying women up to their necks and throwing stones at them in accordance with the rules of Stoning, when they start hanging kids from obsolete cranes then I'll agree. Until then, it's better to keep your ignorant and Racist views under wrap.
Why do you just pick out some nonsensical post to respond to. should the London bus companies follow suit.
In Germany, in the 30s, it all started with burning books and synagogues. The wo9rld knows, where it ended. Israel has been founded as a secular, Zionist state. Be careful calling ideas of preserving those values racist! Israel is not Iran, bagudu used exaggeration to make his point. This is not yet racist. Israel is not Iran, but looking at the bus-separation-issue e.g. makes one feel, that there could be some beginnings. Germany again: before the shoah there were laws, that Jews may not use public transport, sit on parkbenches, ore use the sidewalks. Just look at history!
but comparisons with Iran and what the Government does to those who don't comply with their laws just doesn't make for comparison. This behavior is not condoned and is not Government Policy as you will read in the next article.
It is hard to comprehend that in 2011 we still have Neanderthals leaving among us. This cancer that is eating Israel alive is called "religion" and soon it will be too late to stop it.
Israel should enact a law against this kind of conduct. When religious nuts and zealots start harrasing people openly in public something is starting to go very sour in that society. If calls to prayers are disrupting daily lives, how come this clear case of religious segregation and gender bias isn't?
This is the problem. He broke the law and got away with it so what's to prevent other intolerant law-breakers from doing the same?
Women of Israel follow her example by the thousands!
and I lived in that joke for more then 5 years. I liked the country very much before I came to live there. Now....I have mixed feeling. Went thruogh too many bad experiences. Very primitive people these haridim. The arrogance of some Israeli is disguisting. I wonder why no noe stood up for this woman and defend her. I thuoght that when some one needs help you are never alone in Israel. Haha...what a joke.
Israel is a country of seven million people. You're going to get all sorts of nonsense. Is America a joke because a guy burned a woman alive in a Brooklyn elevator yesterday? Good riddance, Michael, I hope you've found your happiness elsewhere.
How is religion not the root of all evil?
How man can treat Israeli woman in such un-gentleman way. I calling on all Man in Israel to be Gentleman with respect.Would you treat your mother that way???It has brought to my attention the disrespectful way how the woman has been bitten up on buses by refusing to seat on the back of the bus.It is the duty of Rabbi to bring this unpleasant behaviour to congregation ,yet I wonder why the Chief Rabbi has not raised this issue in Synagogue to all ?It come up as an issue in Knesset, yet it is the duty of leaders of Ultra-Orthodox to correct this behaviour. This woman have fought by side of man for liberation and to build this country to make it what it is.Thy do pray to Living God Almighty Father side by side with man of Israel to God of Abraham , Isaac and Jacob .Please let us be Gentleman toward woman, don't you think thy deserve that putting up with us man???
What's even more appalling that the outrageous behaviour of the Haredi man was the policeman - a salaried GOVERNMENT employee taking his side!! It's an outrage and he should be fired or at least disciplined, as should his bosses at the precinct. For too long the police has been siding with Haredim, especially in the capitol and Beit Shemesh- enough is enough!
Anyone remember Rosa Parks 55 years ago? Well thank you Tania Rosenblit. We need more of you.
mingling religious influence with government. Separation of Church and State should be one of the basic premises of government. No one has the right to force his beliefs on another or use the state to do so. The state is not in the business of dictating and regulating conscience but each should be able to follow the dictates of their own conscience within reasonable limits of common sense and decorum.
The only national holiday in the US that has Christian origin is Christmas. Most of them are in recognition of national figures from various ethnic groups.
Our friend Tanya seems to have it out for Hareidim. Make no mistake: I am very much opposed to separate seating on buses and find the movement to segregate nauseating. HOWEVER, I am also very opposed to Jews instigating fights with other Jews for the sake of publicity. Check out the day before the incident: She seems to be building up a case against Hareidim even before the bus occurrence. Then, in the pictures of the men who are protesting, she name-calls, calling them "penguins". I'm sorry, Tanya...perhaps someone with more intelligence and maturity should take up the cause instead. https://www.facebook.com/tanyaros
women should organize and take it in turns to travel on buses and sit at the front. so what if it's for publicity? this practice must stop.
Ask your men to stop acting like pigs, then, there will be no more bad publicity
That was wrong of the policeman to ask Tanya to respect the Haredi man. Its a public bus. She got their first, he didn't. She was already sitting down and comfortable and has every right to stay there and has every right to tell the low life who got on two STOPS AFTER HER to stuff it. She had been sitting there already and doesnt have to get up for anybody. The officer should be shamed for asking someone who was already comfortable in their seat before the Haredi man even saw the bus to respect a man who got on after her. I wish I was there, I would shove the man for her and tell the bus to go.
As an American Jewish Mother, I raised my son, to stand up and give his seat to anyone who is elderly, (man or woman,) anyone disabled, or anyone who seems to need a seat. Respect is showing kindness, sensitivity and care to our fellow human beings - and being grateful that we have the strength, or youth to stand. Respect is not some automatic ritual based in arbitrary gender-based bias and designed to oppress one gender or the other...
makes too much sense.
A woman who refused to move to the back of the bus started the U.S.civil rights movement. And I stress "civil."
If this harassment is against her Human Rights, wouldn't it be better idea to remove the slimeballs from the bus, or would that have instigated an instantaneous Civil War? The inmates are running the Asylum.
This woman must be rewarded All women must do the same as she did Let these parasites and rubbish run behind the bus I was educated to RESPECT ONES FARTHER AND MOTHER One of the ten commandments.
reading all those comments i realize how much ignorance there is among the people regarding my religion. According to greatest Rabbi as Rav Ovadia Yosef there is NOTHING bad for a woman to sit in the front and thats why ALL buses in israel, including Bnei Brak are not separate (not segragat). some people want to be more religious and unfortunately react very wiredly when other people dont agree. thats it! is not religious against secular, ultra ortodox against moderate, is just about some isolate case of people overeacting, no need to make an article on those stuff completely irrelevant.
in Polanski's Rosemary's baby, the truth is, "This is really happening". It has to be stamped out ,therefore the problem has to be confronted before the cancer grows and becomes inoperable.
Ah, something else the Jews and Muslims have in common. I saw the same thing in Tehran.
Why should women go to the back of the bus? It's ridiculous and prejudiced.
Why should women go to the back of the bus? It's ridiculous and prejudiced.
....well you have to become first real Jews according to the men in black ....:)
Tell all those black hats to move to the back of the bus where they belong
.welcome to jewish taliban.makes me sick with shame.
~The Domination & Oppression of Woman and Others in the Name of God~ THAT is what this issue is about, and it has nothing to do with frumkeit or halacha. The man who refused to allow the door to be closed should have been arrested or thrown off the bus. I'm appalled that the police tried making it easy for him by catering to his sexually-repressed whims and asking the woman to go to the back of the bus. The behavior of these so-called "religious" men (I'd call them blind misguided mice) is a disgrace to Judaism and humanity, and the dynamic is no different than in the radical Islamic countries which seek to control women and the general public through laws dictated in the name of Islam and Allah. I'd suggest Jews and others of this radical ilk move to countries like Saudi Arabia or Syria, where apparently their perverted religiosity will have much more in common with the political powers there. These jerks recite "Shma Yisrael...Hashem Echad daily right? Echad=One=Unity....but they nothing about the essence or spirituality of the words they utter. Good riddance to them. David Nefesh Michigan
The "Religious Man" first called this lady a WH-RE in Yiddish as his first introduction THEN demanded respect from her. He is VERY fortunate it was NOT ME on that bus!!!!! GOOD FOR HER.
Kol hakavod to Tanya!! As an observant Jew, I am appalled by the behavior of this Haredi man. More people should have Tanya's courage to stand up to this type of intimidation.
for allowing that to happen .once I sat next to my wife on the seat which is in the middle of the bus and agroup of these people asked my wife to move to the back we refused and asked the driver for help. his answer was that he is not allowed to get involved. WE ALL SHOULD BOYCOTT EGGED UNTILL THEY STOP THIS NONE SENSE, by the way stop calling them Haredim, they are a small group of the Hasidic Satmer and they are the once usually caousing troubles
Boycotting Egged would be playing right into the hands of the fanatics: they'd love to have the buses all to themselves. Much more effective to keep riding and do exactly what Tanya did.
The Rosa Parks of Israel, The Person of the Year, perhaps a bit late, but all it takes in one woman of courage to get the ball rolling and put a stop to this foolishness. many times on the sherut from Jrsm to Tel Aviv a haredi man will board and ask a secular male to change his seat so that he will not be forced to sit next to a female, I always refuse and am supported by the driver. Same on airplanes, when they find themselves forced to sit next to a female, I always refuse and encourage those around me to do the same. Enough is enough.
The most pathetic point of all is that these peopled do not volunteer to indeed isolate themselves by having the men sit in back of the bus-and women sit in front of the bus. This at least would show some sensitivity, However, understanding the non Orthodox mentality or sensitivity are the farthest things on their primitive minds. Look how these people will jump on my comments.with hatred-the hypocracy is mind boggling.
You should go back to school and read your history books dude...
in a democracy no religion must be allowed? You mean in a dictatorship? Maybe in the S.U. they still don't know!
Do the men take germ-wipes with them wherever they go to get their sitting space "clean"? What about their own anal secretions? This whole thing sounds like straight from the cuckoo house.
Let all us women sit kadima. Let anyone who objects WALK.
Hearing about one bad example? Why get worked up? What makes you better then the man who wanted this women to sit at the back of the bus? The hateful words are just as bad as his.
No women on billboards, no women driving in orthodox neighborhoods, no women singing in public. The list grows daily. It is tolerated by the leaders including the pm despite their empty words and encouraged by the likes of Arieh Deeri the new pet of the seculars.
They just sit around and collect our welfare while "studying."
More like they collect our hard earner money by 'studing'
Just one question, is there someone who stands at the front of the bus and checks all of the women for this "Niddah" that the guy is so afraid of?
she just did this for the free publicity to bad she doesn't know her place... she should be punished severely
She did it because as a human being she has equal rights to sit where she likes in a public bus. Not doing so would allow bullies to get away with their game, as well as condone apartheid. And yes, in this case it would be exactly like the white people long ago in S.A. who expected the 'Coloureds' to sit in the back of the bus...even if it is a pregnant woman and the back is full. Utter stupidity. The Haredi men should take tablets to control their sexual hormones.

Seriously, it is the year 2011, and you have a "modern" (presumably) man telling a woman to know her place at the back of the bus. History is not just something that happens in books, but is reality, and those who choose to ignore it do so at their own peril. Rosa Parks did the same thing - and WON! That was DECADES ago, and now we have some Neanderthal wanting another woman to "know her place". I sure am sorry for any females who even know you!
Is Israel above that?
you, sir, are indicative of ALL that is wrong in jewish society today.
I'd suggest you move to Saudi Arabia, where you and the other "religious" men there can "keep women in their place." Are you even aware of the implications of your words here? So you, as a man, get to be the one to decide her "place," huh? Ha! The joke is on you. I applaud this strong woman for standing up for her rights, and for taking a stand against your efforts to dominate her and others because of your personal, private beliefs.
For what? Is she advertising some sort of product? Starring in a new Hollywood film? What on earth would possibly motivate someone to do that? Oh, that's right. Human dignity.
On the contrary, she does know her place; it's wherever she wants to sit.
On the contrary, she does know her place; it's wherever she wants to sit.
Men should run after the bus instead of boarding it. They are stronger so why share the space at all with a woman, just run after the bus. Bravo to Ms. Rosenblit!
There are true life and death and justice and opression issues facing many in this world and those religious idiots believe that they have a mandate from a God to push half of society in its proper ( rather improper place). Reminds of Byzantium debating how many devils can sit on the tip of a needle , at a time when the Ottomans are at Contsantinople's gates....
How disgusting of this woman to provoke observant Jews for the sake of her own selfish agenda. There is no law or obligation for gender segregated buses, it is courtesy and respect. It is similar to taking ones hat off at a Church, or shoes off in a Mosque, or not ripping the garb off an Muslim woman. For those talkbackers who have negative words for this event, they do not understand the situation or intolerant of other beliefs. The woman sought to provoke and disrespect. This is not about rights, it's about respect.
How dare he, or any other haredi demand a woman move to the back of a public bus. Was it not her taxes that paid for that public bus in the first place. He called her a derogatory name. How rude. This man, who in all probability does no work, produces nothing, and pays no tax, demands that a woman already on the bus, must move for him. While he lives with archaic rituals in the 21st century, his demands on a woman in a modern form of public transport must be shouted down at every instance. Ride in a haredi bus. Or dont ride at all!
A man that tells her to get to the back of the bus, for what purpose? How did this man deserve to put himself at a higher place then this women? If this man is an observant Jew, then What did Moses say? There is no temple. There is no reason for this man to ask this women to sit in the back. He disrespected her right to sit where she chooses.
Wow , who knew a public bus has the same religious significance as a Church or Mosque in Israel!?! Should be twinned with Saudi Arabia. Crazy.
An individual also has the right to not enter such buildings or to walk away from such individuals. They do not have the right to impose their own views on others. This man had the right to walk away from the bus and ride another one if he was so offended by a woman sitting up front. He did not have the right to try to force this woman to do otherwise. Obviously he didn't have to go anywhere if he could block a bus' door for 30 minutes. Therefore HE is the one who made a scene. He chose to use this to impose his own views on others. She had every right to stand her ground against intimidation. According to your logic, woman should be banned from driving and going to school because those actions too might offend the Ultra-Orthodox.
It is this man showing disrespect, wake up!
Chaim - it is YOU who is direspectful along with the insane men who demand women sit in the back of the bus. IS it not a courtesy for a woman to be treated with respect? If men have a problem looking at women, then they should wera dark sunglasses or just close their eyes. The winds of social protest are in the air, and equality of respect is demanded. You are so selfish you can't even see the light: Why is it diresepctful for a woman and a man to sit on the same public bus? You have a problem?
the insane cultural practice that might suggest that she has equal rights to sit anywhere on the bus that he does.
Or could maybe it is that you aren't tolerating her beliefs?
When woman buys her bus ticket she pays the same amount of money as man. But when man takes a bus this woman has to make a courtesy toward a man and to move to the back of a bus!? And if she is pregnant and has to sit in front of the bus? Who's this man who allows himself to call any woman derogatory word? Your luck of tolerance toward other people beliefs is very obvious if you can compare customs accepted in a Church or Mosque with the imposed by a group of people special behavior rules for women on a public bus. By the way, you in a company of this ignorant man showed your hostile behavior toward all women regardless of their own religious choices. How can you demand from a Christian, Muslim, Hindu or Atheist woman to follow your demands? You maybe read the Torah but you don't understand the meanings. As you said: "There is no law or obligation for gender segregated buses". If there is now law or obligation you'll better make a courtesy and publicly apologize to all women.
Where is the respect for women who don't want to sit at the back of busses?
Maybe the haredi passenger can respect the lady's right to sit where she wants? This is public transport after all. I salute this lady for her stand.
If you are looking for respect, best respect all women and save your agenda, provocation & disrspect for your shul or your yeshiva or kollel.
If this was about respect, then the man would not have asked her to give up her right to sit anywhere she wants in the first place. This is not about respect, this is about showing women "where they belong".
You're espousing misogyny and using the excuse of an interpretation of religion. What if in America one told Jews, black people, and Asians to go to the back? Would that be okay by you? This sounds like supporting white racism from 1960. Shame on you!
How convenient and twisted is your logic. 1) Some people (religious men) want their views to dominate over others who think and behave differently, and so they expect women to sit in the back. 2) Women wish to stand or sit where they wish (and why not?) 3) It's the woman's fault for provoking the men. This is a very old trick, but it won't work. Own your issues, don't blame women for them.
In terms of being intolerant of others beliefs, try to get your head around this: you aren't tolerant of her beliefs. You certainly have the right to believe any superstition you choose, but what gives you the right to impose your superstitions on her?
Chaim you got one finger down from me, one from my wife and two from my daughters. I am sure that your mum would agree with us.
A bus is not a church, not a mosque and not a synagogue. It is not a religious institution. It is a secular, public institution. Big difference. Kol hakavod, Tanya Rosenblit.
I wouldn't want to sit next to them, and I sure wouldn't go to the back of the bus.
One may think this damaging to the public welfare but we should compare it to the damage of the secular hooligans who destroy property, behave loudly and other nuisances perpetuate- none of which are typical of the Charedi passengers.
I once had the pleasure of sharing a (public) bus from Tiberias to the centre with a crew of black-hatted folks sometime around Purim a few years back. It was the most unpleasant transport experience I can recall, and I've shared a few buses with football "hooligans" over the years...

You are so right! Well said!
The "leftists" are second class, then come the females, then the cattle, then the original inhabitants, and finally the leftist female original inhabitants...
"woman refuses ultra-Orthodox dictate to move to back of bus". In this day and age good on her. The fact that such men still exist is unbelievable, the fact no passengers intervened in support of the woman is utterly deplorable.. Israel wants the world to believe it is a mature, responsible, modern society? I don't think so. It needs another 5,000 years to catch up.
Thank you, Ms. Rosenblit, for your reminder to the nation. This Haredi man's expectation that the entire country will bend to the more absurd elements of his perceptions of Judaism is offensive to the Israeli country's liberal nature. If you don't like the woman in the front, feel free to sit in the back yourself -- and focus on the Talmud as a scholar should, instead of ordering around other people. This may seem quite old-fashioned, but in my opinion, it is quite unthinkable that this man could allow himself to publicly insult a woman.
What were the people on the bus thinking? This amounts to hijacking a bus from Ashdod to Jerusalem. Police should have kicked the man up or down immediately, nor bargaining or asking Tanya Rosenblit "whether she would want to sit in the back". A bus is not an orthodox synagogue.
He'll refuse to pay and still takes the bus while praying that her niddah won't be airborn.
What a phenomenal woman! The state REALLY must take action against those harboring such bigoted views and trampling on the rights of others in a democracy. This kind of behavior is unacceptable. If he is so disturbed by the presence of a woman, he should simply stay at home
Then I would feel sorry for his poor wife, if he has found someone daft enough to have him
The reason why certain right wing orthodox men want women to sit in the back of the bus is the same reason women and men do not sit together in synagogues. Its about extreme adherence to religious separation of the sexes and its not about bigotry against women. That being said, such separation should not apply to public transportation and if there are religious sects that feel that there should be separation of men and women on buses such groups should do what they do in Brooklyn, hire there own private buses.
The problems with intertwining an ancient religion with a modern government will not disappear no matter how many laws there are. The flaw is basic to the nation in it's current form.
so much so, you're writing everyday to Iranian websites etc...to demand that STONING be abolished. Oh you don't? Now isn't that a surprise.
So wait, you never complain about an injustice without dedicating your life to fighting that one injustice? No? Oh, so are you just so stupid you don't understand a fallacious argument, or are you just a jerk?
Really treat Arabs anymore, this explains it all
and when in the Jewish country, notice the majority which are Jews who escaped Muslim persecution and then swing by and pay a tribute to Sol Hachuel's grave in Morocco. Her gravestone will tell you how the Jews are treated in this land.
Sir: I must wonder if individuals such as yourself even comprehend the difference between matters of domestic and international affairs. I completely support Ms. Rosenblit's actions, but to conflate this Haredi man's actions with the nation's foreign policy is outrageous.
Neverrrr!
Could you please awake to the wider world beyond the darkness you find your self in
It is like your mother passes away after a healthy long life ans you are not allowed to say your goodbyes and not allowed into a cemetery, how cruel and unjust is that
I think that the religion put the emphasis on men to observe their belief, and not be seduced by by ANY apearance of ANY woman, dressed or not. To put the burden on the women, not to apear in front of men, so as not to get them to take their mind of their jewish mentality, is escaping responsibility. To quote: "who is is hero??, he who can conquer his urges". I guess their are only cowards in the religious community, who need to be protected of their urges, much like dogs in perpetual heat.
Castration, either physical or chemical, will solve the problem. If ultra-Orthodox men are so weak that they can be seduced so easily just by sitting next to a modestly dressed woman, they should be treated just like any rapist.
Finally; the religious sexist views must go. Let the orthodox men wear blinders if they so weak in the presence of females.
As a woman I say she has every right to sit where she wants........But blessed are the peace makers. Big deal. Get up and move....and return kindness to those who insult you; Bless those who curse you and pray for those who abuse you.
Pray for those who abuse you ? Are you really a women? I have never read such a nonsense !
Of course you will be badly misunderstood by most on this board.
from birth to defer to men, in ways big and small. But they are PRIME RIBS.
...was sit in the back and let the guy in the front decide how many rows she could move up.
As a woman I say she has every right to sit where she wants........But blessed are the peace makers. Big deal. get up and move....and return kindness to those who insult you. Bless those who curse you and pray for those who abuse you.
U.O need to understand that they rights end; at the point that secular rights begin. Robenblit has every right to sit and dress as she pleases! Further, chances are that Rosenblit served in the army to defend her freedom ... did the U.O did? Finally, Rosenblit was on her way to WORK! ... wonder if U.O can say the same? or are they leaving on the taxes that Rosenblit pay G-d bless her!
yes thy are real devil _i salute to you thank you _we shall all stand tall _against those DEVILS among us BRAVO ROSA _never again in the Back
Such a shame...such an embarrassment worldwide... ISRAEL, FOR A 21st century democracy is FORCED INTO dragging a 16th century MINDSET anchor...and as seen, a highly divisive, destructive, wholly self serving entirely selfish back stabbing rabid attack towards it's own people and heroic IDF soldiers who bend over backwards to shelter their extremist beliefs. UNGRATEFUL WRETCHES... "my father serving in WW2 was told by his rabbi when he told the rabbi he couldn't follow all the Jewish laws... the rabbi told my dad "it's war time, we do what we can do, when we can"
This jerk would have been arrested in the United States for disturbing the peace. Israel needs to have strong laws that protect all its citizens from harassment and discrimination.
Shouldn't the policeman have told the man that the woman can sit where she wants? Isn't that the law in Israel? Why would he even suggest she move?
This behavior is inherent in the Jewish religion where Jewish women are little better than cattle, and we know who the cattle are.
Please do mot generalize about a topic you no nothing about. These fanatics are extremeists, and the fact is that most orthodox Jewish women prefer gender segreegation on buses.
Israel is going down a slippery dangerous road
If Haredi men cannot accept that buses are a mode of transport for the use of all fare paying passengers, then they shouldn't use them. Tanya Rosenblit should be given a medal.
It is this mindset that allows the crimes against Palestinians and continuance of the Illegal Occupation of Palestinian Territory...it spawns the Far Rightist terrorists like Kahanists and drags Israel further down in World status.......not anti- semetic....pure logic...something Israeli's lack.
First, learn how to spell and how to use correct punctuation. Then we'll work on your reasoning skills.
Torah does not say where women should ride on a bus. However, the niddah customs would prevent her from sitting anywhere on the bus during niddah. If a woman in niddah sits on the bus seat it becomes unclean and a man will become unclean if he sits there. There should be both male and female buses and this would not be a problem. Either that, or, seats specifically for women or women in niddah could be reserved and the back would be the best place as one would not need to pass by their seat and risk becoming unclean. If you don't understand this, you should. This is to teach us how to separate the clean from the unclean, and it has to do with hygiene and spiritual blessings as well.
Israel is a nation in which Jews of all movements and approaches to interpreting Torah should be free to express themselves. This way of following mitzvot relating to niddah and bus seats may work for the community of the person who posted this message, but his group does not have a monopoly on interpreting Torah. Liberal expressions of Judaism would evaluate these issues of purity, public policy, and pluralism very differently. I realize that to this person, my approach to Judaism is not valid, but that is truly just one group's opinion, and I do not agree that it is Hashem's will. May Israel remain a pluralistic democracy. Ken yehi ratzon.
where does the Torah speak of buses?? Is this just a human made interpretation? (please spare me the "chachamin" thoughts ... just refer to the bible itself, no interpretations .... good luck finding buses on the torah :)
Everyone's gone mad.
You can write niddah, you can write menstruation too. Or is that a dirty word?
if you knew any Torah you would know that without Beit Hamikdash, there is no transferable niddah, or any other impurities therein. Cohanim are still restricted from most hospitals and all cemetaries, and men may not cohabit with their wives during niddah, but your perception of niddah assumes we had a red cow and a temple whereupon which to remove impurity.
If the men are worried about sitting on a seat that may have been contaminated by a woman in niddah...let them stand...or take a cab....or walk. It's their problem, not ours
Where is the evidence that this stuff is true?
Are you joking? As we are not dealing with k'doshim until the Temple is rebuilt! We are tamei met, so only the prohibition of cohabiting with a niddah is in place now. Your post is an embarrassment to Torah observant Jews!
In the case of uncleanliness I am sure there is a way to clean oneself. A small price to pay for the humiliation of women.
Why in the world should any woman have to move because some psychotic thinks she is unclean?
Your sick. To say anyone is unclean sitting, and another becomes unclean clearly makes you sick in the head. The whole so called customs have to change! because it is surely a situation where seculars will force drastic changes in Israel. Change your ways or it will change for you! bYE & GOOD HEALTH!
I think Israel should take some of the money spent on armaments and use it to build a sufficiant number of mental hospitals. No=one can convince me that anyone who believes this fooloisbess is sane!
It's time to emancipate ourselves from this inhuman nonsense.
@Rivka they can't take a cab, a woman might have sat there with her menstruation...
Haredi men cannot be expected to use a cab, after all an unclean woman may have sat in it. No they will have to walk. It will be a mitzvah and the will lose some excess pounds!!!
These guys should wear supersized condoms. That would not only garantee them to remain clean whatever the circumstances, but also it would suit their mentality very well.
Its also worth noting that some of Tanya Rosenblits taxes went to pay for that bus in the first place. I'd like to know how many haredi men can say the same.
I thought this is what you all criticize others for...
Holier than thou, the pointing of the finger attitudes are a stench in the nostrils of G-D. It is not your good works or your ethnicity that makes you clean - but the Lamb of G-D and a broken heart over YOUR sin.
I'm glad she didn't give in. Nicely done!!
Woman are better than the men especially the religious nuts. Grow up and stop dressing like clones. Individualism will set you free...
They are one messed up group of people. I think they should sit in the back of the bus. They are so arrogant and full of themselves. The God they say they serve is no respecter of persons. They have a strange and totally erroneous concept of God.
It's alarming that so many people have liked this comment. The individuals in this article are the ones who should be condemned, not the ultra-orthodox community at large. Women have the right to sit wherever they want on the bus just as much as they do. Calling the ultra-orthodox a "messed up group of people" is a racist and bigoted thing to say. You are not above them if you feel the need to resort to such foolish and dangerous generalizations.
Bravo Tanya Rosenblit!
There is a distinct line between religious tolerance and submission to those afflicted with religious mania. No society may prosper when religious extremists are allowed to rule.
thanks for the laugh...even tho this is not a funny issue, humor takes some of the sting ou
it will only be a few more years until you are little Iran on the mediterranean.
Ms Clintons Rosa Park's comparison was not so off after all huh ?
She did the right thing.
You don't need to travel to Afghanistan to find the Taliban.
Tanya. Consider carrying a can of mace in your purse should one of these thugs ever lay a hand on you.
I doubt they would dare, she might be menstruating. She should carry an assault rifle in case they decide to stone her.
So this is what democracy is in the middle east!
if you think this isn't.
Democracy is a system in which people to vote for their leaders, or their laws.
stands up to the Haredi Taliban.
the men who talk to most about all this are the men who need to be investigated, time and time again those who dabble too much on these topics are doing so as they have very dirty things they are hiding
