'Iran pays, Syria smuggles, and Hezbollah receives weapons'
IDF accuses Syria of providing Hezbollah with every type of military hardware in its arsenal.
By Amos Harel and Avi Issacharoff Tags: Hezbollah Iran Israel newsThe Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday released photographs taken by drone aircraft of the southern Lebanon village where a Hezbollah arms depot exploded on Monday. The photos show persons, possibly Hezbollah operatives, removing something resembling a 4-meter-long missile from the depot, loading it onto a truck and moving it to a hiding place in a different village.
A senior military source said on Tuesday that Syria has made a clear strategic decision to make available to Hezbollah every type of military hardware in its arsenal. According to the same source, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon is wary of entering Shi'ite villages in the area and generally avoids trying to enforce UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which forbids Hezbollah from having any arms inside the villages south of the Litani River.
The initial reports of the incident on Monday spoke of an explosion at the home of a Hezbollah operative in the village of Tayr Filsi, east of Tyre, in which five persons were killed. However, Hezbollah and the Lebanese Army maintain that only a single person was injured in the blast, and claim that the explosion occurred during an attempt to deal with unexploded Israeli ordnance.
The senior IDF source said that weapons are now being smuggled from Syria into Lebanon on a regular, weekly basis. "Iran pays, Syria smuggles and Hezbollah receives," he explained.
According to the officer Hezbollah has tens of thousands of rockets, many of which are kept in about 300 storage facilities spread throughout the 160 or so Shi'ite villages in southern Lebanon.
"Syria feels quite comfortable," the army source said. "There is no international pressure [on Damascus] to break off its ties with Iran or the 'axis of evil.' It pays no price for its role in the smuggling."
The officer added that the IDF has taken notice of increasing concern among the UNIFIL peacekeepers when they enter Shi'ite villages to search for weapons. "In places where they still try to carry out searches, there is such intense friction with Hezbollah that the UN people usually opt to give up," the senior IDF source said.
His comments reflect an escalation in the tone that Israel is using regarding Syria in view of that country's continued military aid to Hezbollah and what is perceived as total Syrian disregard for the international community.
The timing of Monday's blast, the second at an arms cache in 10 weeks (the first was in July, in the village of Khirbet Salim), is embarrassing for Hezbollah.
The fact that IDF drones managed to photograph the activities in the village after the blast will certainly be used as part of Israel's efforts against Hezbollah on the international arena.
UNIFIL spokeswoman Yasmine Bouziane said yesterday that the Lebanese Army is cooperating fully with the peacekeepers to investigate the explosion. Another UNIFIL spokesman, Milos Strugar, told Israel Channel One television that the UN is evaluating the evidence. He said that the most important thing is to identify the cause of the blast.
Strugar said that the UN Security Council renewed UNIFIL's mandate in southern Lebanon a month ago and has not redefined it, suggesting that the organization considers the authority of the peacekeepers sufficient for them to carry out their mission in the area.
He said that UNIFIL operates in all areas between the Litani River and the Israeli border, including within the villages. He said that cooperation with the Lebanese Army is good.
The drone footage that was released last night shows the activity near the arms depot not long after the blast. The actual explosion was not photographed.
The IDF insists that the tube seen in one image being loaded onto a truck is a missile, but the picture quality is too poor to identify the type. Analysts told Haaretz it might be a Fajr-type missile, which is made in Iran and has a range of about 70 kilometers.
Three conclusions can be reached about the incident: That Security Council Resolution 1701 is quickly losing its value; that Hezbollah is hiding its arms caches among civilians and is counting on severe international criticism of Israel in case of future conflagration in southern Lebanon.
The third conclusion is that the Hezbollah build-up should be seen within the context of a regional conflict, where Iran is supplying arms to extremist organizations in the broader region, such as the Horn of Africa, and that the media only receives bits of information about the ongoing, secret war between Western countries, Egypt and Israel against Iran and its allies.

But Hisbollah has a very potent argument that only it can defend the country. This is a very uncomfortable situation for the government, and as always in Lebanon the government is weak. it isn't even formed yet. Israel is prudent to keep an eye, many eyes, on Hisbollah. The organization is a threat, it can rain hell on northern Israel. Israel has invaded and attacked Lebanon many times and seen from the other side of the boarder the problem is Israeli aggression. I realize that suggesting that more normal relations with Lebanon will receive little support in Israel. But it cannot hurt. It might even help Lebanon become stronger and grow. Hizbollah will not subside as a threat until the Lebanese army can defend the nation. Israel has used it's influence with the USA to keep the Lebanese armed forces weak. Thus Israel has made it's Hisbollah problem worse. There are plenty in Lebanon concerned about Hisbollah. Too bad Israel won't ease tensions and by doing so help them.
Inadmissible evidence. Illegal search. Why are Israeli drones violating Lebanese air space?
Respond to their next aggression. It would be sacrilegious if the Lebanese were unable to defend their country the way the Palestinians were and continue to be restricted.
Israeli story tellers crack me up when they make up stories... By the way, why didn't that long missile explode too?
God forbid anyone to have the ability to defend themselves from israeli aggression. Its o.k. for israel to arm itself to the teeth with the latest weaponry including nuclear, but we need investigations because Hezbollah are getting a few basic rockets. Joke.
I am fairly sure Mr. Lieberman and his back office lodged official complains. Perhaps for the first time in many years we have the right man on the job. What I do doubt is Haaretz even bother printing... might jeopardize there Swedish auditory.
The State of Israel should consider the new strategic policy towards Syria. Bashar Assad must be removed. King Abdullah has rights to the Damascus throne. Make deal with Abdullah: he will get the glorious Damascus plus all Arabs from J&S and east bank, Israel will get, as was intended from the beginning, all territory to the Hijaz-Damascus raiway minus all Arabs from J&S and east bank, Bashar will get nice ophtalmology clinic in Paris (if he cooperates). This is the only fair approach to solve the problem of peace in ME.
"pressure [on Damascus] to break off its ties with Iran or the 'axis of evil" - note how Israel is now the only country in the world to still use the term 'Axis of Evil"..how they must long for the good old days when Bush Jnr was in office "what is perceived as total Syrian disregard for the international community" - WHAT..this is coming from Israel..the same Israel who has ignored dozens of UN resolutions ? This is a joke right!! Opposite that, show evidence of ONE instance where Syria is not abiding by UN resolutions "The IDF insists that the tube seen in one image being loaded onto a truck is a missile" - if you wish hard enough, maybe everyone will look at the video and see a missile there...tap your feet together and say 'There's no place like home, there's no president like Bush, there's no country that loves peace like Israel" - sigh, in conclusion - ISRAEL MAKE PEACE ALREADY !!!!
cont.. "the initial reports..spoke of an explosion...in which five persons were killed ...Hezbollah and the Lebanese Army maintain that only a single person was injured in the blast" - oh right, Hizballah AND the Lebanese Army and every witness that was there are lying, and Israel KNOWS that 5 people were killed because a-they have photos showing the dead (NOPE), b-they have found the relatives of all 5 dead and spoken to them (NOPE) c-they have impartial eye witnesses swearing there were 5 dead (NOPE) d-5 killed is a large enough number to make it a serious accident, without being too large to appear ridiculous without any evidence to back it up (hahaha) "senior IDF source said weapons are being smuggled from Syria into Lebanon on a regular, weekly basis" - umm photos, evidence ?? After all Israel is making numerous daily flights over Lebanon each day to gather the evidence (in violation of 1701) surely it must have tons of evidence by now..oh wait, not one photo, how bizarre ... cont
Israel is in itself in breach of UN Resolution 1701. Merely an attempt by Israel to take attention away from the accusations of war crimes currently circulating in the UN headquarters in New York. Nothing to see here. Hezbollah is a legitimate part of the government of Lebanon, if they integrated their militia with the Lebanese Army Israel would simply find something else to whinge about.
cont... "loading it onto a truck and moving it to a hiding place in a different village" - oh yeah, that's all in the video...it's written on the piece of paper which you can make out laying on the driver's seat in the truck "A senior military source said .. Syria has made a clear strategic decision to make available to Hezbollah every type of military hardware in its arsenal" - umm, did Syria tell you this ? Do you have a recording of Assad saying this to someone ? err...are you making this up perhaps ? or should we not think that because why would you, you do not have any agendas to say such things ?? cont...
Talk about making things up, Israel is so desperate to turn public opinion against Hisballah and Iranan that it has no problems calling a spade a hammer and saying that night is day. Look at the crap inferences this article makes "The IDF released photos....where a Hesbollah arms depot exploded" - how does the photo show that it was an arms depot that exploded ? "The photos show persons, possibly Hezbollah operatives" - what, because they are Lebanese and they are in a Shiite village, they are now Hezbollah, or do the photos show tattoos of "we are hezbollah" on the fellas "Removing something resembling a 4-meter-long missile" - hmmm, I wonder if they could not have compared the 'something' to a 4-meter long drain pipe, or a 4-meter long water storage tank..oh wait, they are Lebanese AND shiite, so they do not build homes with pipes to remove sewage or build storage tanks for rainwater, they know only missiles! ...cont
Al-Akhbar, the Lebanese newspaper associated with Hezbollah provided a conflicting story. Abdel Nasser Issa, a Hezbollah official... "found an [unexploded] shell along the banks of the Litani River and the shell exploded as he was trying to defuse it in his house." This is the bogus story we are supposed to believe. Who in their right mind finds a live bomb and brings it to their own house to defuse it. Where BTW, Reuters reported Nasser and his son were killed along with 4 wounded. I suppose only morons would attempt that kind of bravery. Unless of course, Abdel Nasser needed to preform a martyrdom operation against his own house.
...And now Turkey's holding joint military exercises with Syria. Israel is promoting regional unity! Heartwarming, really. Sunni and Shia, Turk, Arab, and Persian -- all finding common ground.
But given the raving paranoia of Israel in the past, it might not be true. This is the problem of being the boy who calls wolf too many times. Israel has a need to feed paranoia for political reasons. And thus, it's paranoia has achieved such prominence that no sane nation might view it's claims as anything else. What might be done to cure this problem? It would take a decade or more of israel speaking only what might be proven. And that would mean israel would have to deny the paranoid ravings of the last few decades. Did iran nuke Israel two years ago? Did not Israel claim that Iran was going to nuke it two years ago? This is the problem with being a raving paranoid. Eventually the paranoid ravings do not happen, and every one else in the world catches on to the paranoia and pathology of the nation which continually claims vast, irrational and unsupported by fact conspiracies against it. Best for Israel to get a grip on reality and stop teaching the world it is nuts.
The UNSC would have to ask for a report and since the IDF drone is obviously overhead and in violation of 1701, Israel didn't ask the US to have a report done. Besides, 1701 allows anybody sanctioned by the Lebanese government to receive arms. So who knows what secret protocols inside that government might allow? Hezbollah has a position inside now.
The Assad regime sponsors terrorism because it is a regime based on terrorism. The advantages for the Assad regime to sponsor jihadists are many. They seek to use terrorists to defeat the United States in the region, thwart the development of democracies in Lebanon and Iraq, and to employ terror as a means of waging war against Israel. By supporting insurgents and terrorists and allowing radical Islam to show its head inside Syria, Assad makes clear that there is no viable alternative to him and that it is he who must be courted if the West is to be successful in the region. the Israelis to indulge in illegal occupation and settlements, smuggled nuclear technology to Israel, and of course supplies Israel with the most modern weaponry - quite consistent with the view that AIPAC and the Jewish lobby rule America, and Obama is just merely an Israeli marionnette!
Where is the UN convening the ongoing breach of UNSC Res. 1701?
where is the munition how come it didn't explode too makes you wonder why the drone was there may be has something to do with it
"The IDF insists that the tube seen in one image being loaded onto a truck is a missile, but the picture quality is too poor to identify the type. Analysts told Haaretz it might be a Fajr-type missile, which is made in Iran and has a range of about 70 kilometers". what happened to the "know how" of israeli equipment? not as good as i thought nor israel thought, but anyway, if you read the whole article, you will see how israel screams bloody murder while actually ignoring the exact same thing they do, how hypocritical.
Syria will have to pay a military price. So long as Syria is off the hook as in the last war, they have nothing to lose.
