Interior Minister Yishai: Israel's relationship with U.S. is above all else

Crisis with U.S. over East Jerusalem construction caused by unfortunate coincidence, says Shas chair.

"Our relationship with the Americans is above all else. It is an alliance that has survived complicated periods, and I had no intention of harming those ties, or to challenge the American administration, or to present obstacles to this important visit by the vice president," Shas chairman and Interior Minister Eli Yishai said Thursday in an interview with Haaretz on the crisis with Washington over the decision to authorize 1,600 housing units in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo.

Yishai says that the whole situation was caused by an unfortunate coincidence: a visit by United States Vice President Joe Biden and the decision by the Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee to authorize the plans for constructing Jewish homes in East Jerusalem.

The interior minister said that during the past two days the ministry assessed the lessons of the incident, so that similar occurrences will be avoided in the future.

As such, all relevant ministry officials were told that all matters pending at the committee that affect construction beyond the Green Line in Jerusalem should be brought to the minister's attention.

Yishai stressed that during "sensitive" visits, he would like to be informed of the deliberations taking place in the committee.

"No official is to blame," Yishai said, referring to Interior Ministry staff. "It was technical authorization only. The committee session was scheduled two weeks in advance, and no one in the committee knew that the vice president of the U.S. was coming."

"Those who may have known know that in Jerusalem there is no freeze on construction, so there was nothing unusual," Yishai added. "There was a mishap and no special importance should be attributed to it."

While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu worked hard to publicly explain what was seen as an effort to spoil Biden's visit, Yishai was quick to stress that "In Jerusalem there is no construction freeze and therefore building will continue. Jerusalem, according to a cabinet decision, is not part of the freeze."

The Shas leader also expressed confidence that the matter will not have a detrimental effect on his relations with the prime minister or on coalition stability. "The integrity of the coalition is important to Shas, and I certainly have no intention of making the prime minister's life difficult or undermine the diplomatic process [with the Palestinians]. The prime minister has a genuine desire to push the process forward, and he is capable of bringing peace. I believe him and I suggest that instead of attacking him, help him. The demand should be made to the other side. It is up to the Palestinians, and I do not know whether they are capable of making decisions."

Dumb, dumb, dumb! Just plain dumb. And embarrassing to Israel. The idiots involved in this move should be fired and the plan scrapped. They blew it. If they had only waited or done things differently things could have much different. But this has wrecked the whole mess. Good job Yishai! Idiots.

It is not the timing but the substance of what was proposed that gives offense. To try to palm this off as just bad timing suggests that there is a good time for Israel to do bad things. If Israel is so ready to apologize for the timing of its actions, it knows those actions are wrong. East Jerusalem is destined to be Palestine's capital if there are to be two states, and everyone knows that full well. Israel is digging in to prevent reasonable compromise and Netanyahu wields the shovel.

Above all else ? Really! There comes times when allies have conflicting interests. Would Yishai agree to abandon the Kotel ? He has red lines. The title is misleading.

Biden-Obama: lost hopes & big disappointment

Biden's visit in Israel/Palestine & the poor "results" which ensue reveal that the USA have no interest whatsoever in a peace solution in the region. Jews and Arabs should continue to grill because it apparently serves American interests, Mideast-doctrine, weapon & arms-lobby and Money! Human lives don't play any role! This is the message seen by West European critical eyes. Those Israelis who think they are better informed because they are within the picture, don't see what is beyond its frame. It's a terrible disappointment to see how Obama's policy, which began so hopefully and idealistically, is melting away, and that what is perevailing now is a religious, nationalistic and fanatic Israeli governement which destroys all hopes for peace and prefers territories and settlements over the immediate necessity to compromise and to protect human lives in the future. In today's globalization-world this approach is obsolete.

For the jews, the one and only above all is God and the Messiah... not Biden. Yishai set the record straight on that one.

It takes a unique act of collective stupidity to slap the face of the vice president of the United States?a major figure in our most loyal (and almost only) ally. It matters not what views one holds about expansion in Jerusalem, only a person with a desire to further harm our nation would allow this act of enormous stupidity to occur. Even the most ardent proponent of a right wing position should have had intellect to know that this timing was absurd. And while not a physical act, it was as stupid and counterproductive as a terrorist bombing by a Palestinian group would have been during the Biden visit this week. It was clear that a major purpose of Vice President Biden?s visit was to discuss approaches to the unusual risk Israel faces with Iran. To muddy the waters, as this announcement did, only weakens our endangered position. And anyone who fails to understand that does not have the maturity or commonsense to be in a senior position in our government.
