Intel to employ only non-Jews at Jerusalem plant on Shabbat

Move comes after ultra-Orthodox protesters attacked the microchip plant for operating on Saturday.

By Yair Ettinger and Jonathan Lis Tags: Jerusalem Israel news

Intel will not employ Jewish workers on Saturday shifts in its Jerusalem plant, the chip-maker has suggested in a new compromise proposal. The move comes after large crowds of ultra-Orthodox protesters attacked the plant on Saturday, in protest of it continuing operations on Shabbat. The plant, in the Har Hotzvim industrial area in Jerusalem, employs some 150 workers.

According to the six clauses that make up the proposal, only conveyers producing the most sensitive components will operate on Saturday; only 60 employees will work on Saturday, in three 20-workers shifts; and all Jewish workers who were employed on Saturdays will be replaced by non-Jewish ones that day.

The company will bear the expenses of training those new workers, the proposal said. Representatives of the company said last week that the training of the workers had begun before the crisis began, and should be completed shortly.

Intel would also recruit workers from the ultra-Orthodox community itself.

The proposal was presented to MK Uri Maklev (United Torah Judaism) in a meeting chaired by Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin. Maklev is supposed to deliver a response by the ultra-Orthodox rabbis soon. The UTJ deputy mayor of Jerusalem, Yitzhak Pindros, was attacked by the protesters on Saturday.

Intel refused to comment on the agreement Tuesday.

Every time we give up something, it is like a failure. Why should we accept the haredi diktat on public affairs ? Nobody shall be surprised when they will force us to wear like them ! We should not accept any attempt to undermine the basis of this society and th pluralism inside the jewish people. Their clear attempt is to slowly break the status quo made by Ben Gurion. Jerusalem is a free city, Israel is a free and democratic state. We need a constitution with clear secular borders between public and private affairs.

When Intel can choose between two job applications of a Jew and a non-Jew, with similar qualifications, what will they do? Hire the non-Jew who offers the additional benefit of more flexibility.

What a bunch of cowards you are for letting a fringe element get their way just because they get loud and obnoxious. Sure the ultras have a right to protest but when that protest becomes civil disobedience and they start ruining someone else's economic benefit it's time to lock some of these trouble-makers up. If people, Jews included, want to work on Saturday and employers want to keep their places open on Saturday it is no one's business. In Jerusalem the inmates are running the asylum.

If I was the manager in charge of this plant, I'd say "screw this gong show", pack up and leave for greener pastures like China. Israelis should be very thankful Intel chose to stick around, because without them Jerusalem would be a boghole sustained on the scraps of welfare they get from secular taxpayers and donors. Religion should be a personal matter and nothing more, it's not the state's business to butt in and tell people what days they're allowed to work. The idiotic zealots who think they have the right to dictate such things and speak on "God's" behalf should be dealt with harshly.

Intel isn't a Jewish company. It would be a problem for a Jew to make a non-Jew work on Shabbat, but that wouldn't be the case here. As a religious Jew, I can live with non-Jews working on Shabbat as long as it involves no Jews at all in any capacity- even indirectly.

Whatever the reasons they chose to make this decission its their right to do that if they think its in the COMPANIES BEST INTERESTS. Most companies wouldn't even be open on Saturday anyway especially in Jerusalem.

Remember the sabath,to consecrate it to the Lord.Work 6 days and do in them whatever you must do,but the 7th day is of rest consecrated to the Lord your God.Do not perform any kind of work in this day, neither your son, your daughter, your slave, your animals, and neither the FOREIGNER that lives with you. .By FOREIGNER,the Bible means the non jew,or gentile. So if the rabbis accept this compromise by Intel, they will be going against the Torah. That is why they wrote the Talmud,to circumvent these kind of paradoxes. In the talmud as long as rabbi this or that said so,then it is valid.Better not to follow anything, not to be an hypocrite.

Half of the world's Jewish population (me included) is secular. They have denounced religion. We are sick and tired of many gentiles' assumption, and of religious Jews' conviction, that we are followers of the Jewish faith just because we were born Jews. In fact, I find it downright offensive when anyone assumes that about me. It is high time that a semantic distinction is made between "Jews" - followers of Judaism and "Jews" - members of the Jewish People. Using a single term for both reflects and suits religious Jews' ideology very well, but leads to widespread misunderstanding and confusion as to Jews in general in Israel, among the Jewish People and worldwide. Any suggestions, anyone? How about "Hebrew" to indicate ethnicity, and "Jew" to indicate religion. Being Israeli-born and secular and my mother tongue being Hebrew, I have always felt Hebrew, never Jewish. It could work in Hebrew, too. Three boos for Intel, for giving in to those backward, racist miscreants.

Unless Intel wants to prove that we are not a respectable nation we must stand firm and respect Shabbas to derserve the respect that we deserve from the world. Shut intel down on Shabbas they already have 6 working day made availbale to them in Israel.
