IDF prepares to open 'Israelis only road' to Palestinian traffic
High Court ruled barring Palestinians from Route 443 is disproportionate to security needs.
By Chaim Levinson Tags: Israel news IDF Israel High CourtThe Israel Defense Forces is preparing to open Route 443 to Palestinian traffic, in keeping with last month's High Court of Justice ruling, and has put together a plan.
The High Court ruled that barring Palestinians from using the highway, which links the coast with north and East Jerusalem, was disproportionate to security needs, and ordered the IDF to find suitable alternative security arrangements within five months.
The plan is being formulated under the leadership of the head of the Central Command's general staff, Brig. Gen. Motti Almoz. From details Haaretz has obtained, it appears that a roadblock will be placed at the Ofer army camp junction, about five kilometers west of the current roadblock at Atarot, which it will replace. The army is also considering doing away with the Ramot roadblock between the northwest Jerusalem suburb of Ramot and Givat Ze'ev.
Moving the roadblock west to the Ofer army camp will mean Givat Ze'ev residents will have to pass through it on their way home from the coast.
In their appeal to the High Court, the Palestinians asked that the Bitunia roadblock at the Ofer junction be opened to traffic from Route 443 heading toward to Ramallah. The IDF said opposed the idea, saying soldiers standing at the post would be endangered; the High Court accepted the army's argument. Therefore Palestinian vehicles will be able to use Route 443 only to drive between villages along it, not to reach Ramallah.
The Army Spokesman's Office released the following statement: "The IDF is preparing to implement the High Court's ruling and is now making an extensive study of the actions required for the matter."

While Israeli has the obligation to protect its citizens, banning a whole people because of there race IS Apartheid
count the ways !
surely NOT a DEMOCRATIC country's way of doing things, especially when the ROAD is on Palestinians land?
Many others must follow, but it would definitely be a step into the right direction....
Three cheers! Israel is acting like a nation of laws and obeying court decisions.
You should try driving through arab populated area with Israeli license plates. You would be stoned to death by so-called partners for peace. Wake up #1, there is a war going on... Or in your book it is alright to attack Jewish cars but in return if you try to prevent that you are a racist...?
1. Israelis includes Jews (white or black) and Arabs, as long as you are an Israeli citizen 2. The Supreme Court has just ruled that even this arrangement is unacceptable (and right so) 3. The army is implementing it, as it should in a democracy So why is that racism?
If the IDF knew anything about counterinsurgency it would be sharing the security with the Palestinian authority. Each and every vehicle would be searched at least twice along the entire route, at least once by IDF and once by PA Security and every person traveling would be pat-down searched by both sides. No weapons allowed by anybody at any time for any purpose. And if the PA catches somebody, regardless of citizenship, they get tried and sentenced by PA courts. But then again, the current Israeli government doesn't want peace and the IDF doesn't know anything about counterinsurgency. It's surprising the IDF is even considering obeying the court SUGGESTION. There is no such thing as a court ORDER in Israel.
No such thing, you say? Maybe not in law. Put on a black hat and coat, and drive on certain WB roads. No fair having bullet proof glass for a windshield.
This road was only closed off to Palestinian after *numerous* terrorist attacks along it by Palestinians against Israelis. It wasn't racism. It was common sense. Number of terrorist attacks since then? Zero. That's no coincidence.
... in Israel? israel always will use the broad Holocaust umbrella to hide this crimes. This is just one in hundreds!
