The Egyptian army has been destroying smuggling tunnels between the Gaza Strip and Sinai, said Palestinians who build them. The Egyptians have been flooding them, they said.

Hamas: Egypt destroying Gaza smuggling tunnels by flooding them
On its website, Hamas quotes both the owner of a tunnel and an Egyptian security official as saying that Egypt is reinforcing its troops on the border with the Gaza Strip, and that it has halted smuggling through most of the tunnels.

08 0 25closing a life line
- By Jan Elshout

You can only close tunnels after normalisering in/out traffic to/from Gaza. Now they are a life line. There is nothing in international law allowing to cut off a whole population from its normal requirements. They are now starting at the wrong side: first you should normalize traffic and after that the tunnels are not needed anyway.

Condemning Israel for the blockade of Gaza does not in the least inhibit condemnation of anyone who cooperates in this - whether Egypt, the USA or whoever. Where on earth did you get that impression?

Having read all the comments here (what made MOSHEH think I had not?), I am quite aware that Egypt controls part of the border of Gaza. If it is not clear already, it seems to me that Egypt, like any other participant, deserves condemnation for keeping this border closed. Puzzled that this was not clear already, and without arrogant pronouncements about what others should or should not do. Despite the obvious temptation.

Egypt is trying to strike a balance between appeasing Israel and the Americans to keep the aid flowing .By "closing the tunnels , Egypt will declare that it has controled the Gaza border so all trade should go through regular duty/customs border crossing which will no longer need to be restricted/close or curtailed to please the Israelis. This will amke the Israeli complaints about smuggling weapons and the need to "embargo" Gaza . moot. At least from the Egyptian point of view.

Gaza tunnels is a black market. It means Egypt can't really benefit from the economical trade with Gaza.At the same time all the terror groups which involved in smuggling hold population on each side of the boarder in direct economical dependence and constant threat from the smugglers

Does this mean that Hamas and the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood are not the allies one would expect from their histories, or that the Army in Egypt is acting on its own? Either way it requires explanation.

racism

The idea of peoples being liked or disliked is fundamentally racist (or ethnicist if you don't like the dubious idea of "race"). And using the supposed dislikes of the people of Germany as an argument is not convincing, especially given the history of such "dislikes".

Perhaps talknic could point out where in the Israel/Egypt Peace Treaty this is mentioned - I could not find it : http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/Peace%20Process/Guide%20to%20the%20Peace%20Process/Israel-Egypt%20Peace%20Treaty And the 2005 crossings agreement includes such matters as allowing exports from Gaza, so it is hard to claim that it is a live agreement. In any case, even if it were required under the agreements, that does not explain the sudden interest in enforcing this from the Egyptian side.
