Group calls for left-wing radio to counter new East Jerusalem station
Gush Shalom filed two High Court petitions against the creation of Galei Israel before the station was launched.
By Gili Izikovich and Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Israel newsThe Gush Shalom (Israeli Peace Bloc) has asked Communications Minister Moshe Kahlon to create a radio station catering to the political left, several weeks after the station Galei Israel was established in Givat Ze'ev, East Jerusalem to serve the national-religious community.
"The creation of a right-wing station obligates the creation of an equivalent left-wing station," wrote Gabi Lasky, an attorney for Gush Shalom, to the minister. "Neglecting to create a station for Israel's dovish community would disrupt the delicate balance in Israeli media."
Gush Shalom filed two High Court petitions against the creation of Galei Israel before the station was launched, stating it would lead to the "legitimization" of the unlicensed pro-settler Arutz Sheva station.
In addition, the petition claimed that the Second Broadcasting Authority, which oversees regional radio, may not hold a tender over an area that has not been officially annexed to the state.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces GOC Central Command issued a tender to create a Second Broadcast Authority branch in the West Bank, despite the fact that the Gush Shalom petition remains pending.
The Communications Ministry said in a statement, "The matter is pending, and depends on the outcome of the legal process. We will give our response to the relevant authorities."

"The creation of a right-wing station obligates the creation of an equivalent left-wing station," wrote Gabi Lasky, an attorney for Gush Shalom, to the minister. "Neglecting to create a station for Israel's dovish community would disrupt the delicate balance in Israeli media." THE DELICATE BALANCE IN ISRAELI MEDIA???? Don't make me laugh! What delicate balance is leftist attorney Gabi Lasky talking about?? The Israeli newspapers, radio, and television have been inordinately skewed way left for the last six decades.
..obligates the government to create a leftist station?? Let leftists start their own, then apply for a permit. This is not a command economy!
they are financed by foreign elements and do not represent israelis
they need to 'balance' a right wing voice on the airwaves. Most of the airwaves carry leftist agendas and when one station is established and dedicated to Jewish and zionistic principles, these insecure, leftist obsessors demand parity. their agenda is a sinking ship of despair and assuming they will need advertisers and sponsors, they are sunk before they would set sail. Leftist, secular, anti-Israelis just can't face the truths.
I would propose a system where anyone who gathers sufficient public support should be able to set up a radio station. Let's say 100,000 signatures, maybe more. Anyone able to gather that amount of support should be allowed to set up a radio station. Of course certain limits need to be kept to prevent radicalization on both sides - they must be obligated to stick to the law in all matters regarding content. As for #1 - Aron, you're the kind of person who makes me think whether I shouldn't be fleeing from this country very quickly before it turns into a fascist theocracy. Sincerely, A chareidi 'chutznik' who prefers Haaretz above all others.
Most of he Israeli media are in the hands of the left, promoting the so-called "peace" of the Asla (sefardic pronounciation of Oslo) that so far only brought us terrorism and hatred from the world. For so many years Abe Nathan was free to broadcast the "Voice of Peace" but Arutz Sheva disturbed the democratic ears and had to be shut down. And anyway the new station is far to be "right wing" it is merely with religious trends for a change!
and all the other self-hating media.
