Girl, 8, becomes poster child for anti-Haredi backlash
The outpouring of support for Na'ama has been matched, if not surpassed, by the public outrage at 'Moshe,' the Haredi driver who, in a televised report, explained why spitting at a young girl was justified.
By Mordechai I. Twersky Tags: Jewish World Orthodox JewsThe nationally televised image of 8-year-old Na'ama Margolese - the Beit Shemesh schoolgirl so traumatized by taunting Haredim that she refused to cross the street in their direction even with the aid of her mother - has gripped the country, turning the shy daughter of North American immigrants into a poster child for the searing national debate over the exclusion of women.
"I'm frightened," cried the youngster, paralyzed by fear, as she stood on the street next to her school, refusing to budge. It was the same corner where she and her classmates have been cursed and spat at by ultra-Orthodox Jews for the past year.

"We'll walk just a little bit," her mother, Hadassa, assured her as she held her hand. "No, no!" Na'ama shouted, her cries turning to a chilling, shrieking squeal. Less than 24 hours following the Friday night broadcast on one of the country's leading news magazines, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a rare Saturday night statement, condemning what he called "religious violence against women in the public sphere."
According to the statement, the prime minister has instructed Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch to "act aggressively" against such incidents.
The outpouring of support for Na'ama has been matched, if not surpassed, by the public outrage at "Moshe," the Haredi driver who, in the televised report, sat behind the wheel of his car and explained, ever so casually, why spitting at a girl he was told was seven years old was justified.
"To spit on a girl who does not act according to the law of the Torah is okay," said Moshe. "Even at a seven year old. There are rabbis who empower us to know how to walk in the street and how a woman should act."
In fact, Na'ama is an Orthodox girl. In the report, she and her mother are shown wearing long-sleeved blouses, with their skirts extending past their knees. Hadassa - who together with her parents immigrated to Israel from Chicago in 1983 - is wearing a kerchief over her hair, as is the practice among some married Orthodox women. "As far they [the Haredim] are concerned, I'm not a religious woman," said Hadassa, who has branded her daughter's attackers "terrorists" and called for their arrest and incarceration.

Why would you want to leave the freedom of the US to live amongst one of these zealots and even pretend to share some of their views? What a place to raise you kids!
Every Israeli who wants to live in a democracy needs to say NO to these zealots. They must be stopped now or Israel becomes a second Iran or Saudi Arabia.
nothing equivocal about it - this is not the image that friends of israel want to see used by the enemy
Christianity has the altar boys sex scandal, Islam has radical fundamentalism, and Judaism has...well, this.
Not 'Christianity', but 'Catholicism' has the altar boy sex scandals. The state proscutes child abuse, also by Catholic priests. What does the State of Israel do to deliver its citizens of this Haredi evil?
I live in Bet Shemesh -- Ramat Bet Shemesh Aleph. We live usually in peace with many different neighbours and no problems. This is and has been an ongoing battle of a fanatic fringe element from Meah Shearim. There are no Rabbis supporting this. There are no moderates, nor normal individuals supporting this. And, no, you wouldn't be able to take public money from them because frankly they have nothing to do with the state. We need to BUILD PEACE, and HARMONY between people to offset this -- not more and more publicity to talk about it. How about we try and create a positive talk. IT IS WRONG WHAT THEY ARE DOING. NO ONE DENIES THAT. Let's not become like them and add fuel to fire. Let's talk about how we are ONE PEOPLE. How we are blessed with living together in the Holy Land. How we are blessed to live in a safe place, free to have personal expression. Please. Let's try.
No one should use religion to assault a child or a woman. They should be thrown in jail. That's it.
"There are no Rabbis supporting this." There ARE NONE {Rabbis} in Ramat Bet Shemesh Aleph.speaking UP against it either! Their silence is contributing to the problem.
I can't imagine anyone more deserving of Shin Bet hospitality.
I'd like to see an anti-Haredi backlash. All women and girls should leave town and go on strike, stay with friends and relatives and let the men be by themselves with no women to serve and comfort them. They don't deserve any women around them! Glad I left the country for good!
Love to see what Americans make of this.
really?
Yes, it was an item on Dutch TV yesterday evening. They love anything negative on Israel and and regret to say Israel is very obliging. Finally Israeli public is waking up for if you have to wait for the government who are only paying lip service....
And I want my secular country back!
Yeah it did...Al the way to Belgium and the Netherlands. And I for one am disgusted by this! Who in their right minds would threaten and spit on a little girl? Such 'heroes' of religious bigotry, cowards who should be ashamed of themselfs!
One of our "enlightened" right wing non religious politicians said that this is all being blown out of proportion and should be stopped as poor Israel is loosing support in the US as a result. Last week Bibi blasted the bus incident, the week the spitting but what has he actually done? Just mutter empty words. We need to teach him a lesson at the ballot box and there need to be protests at Israeli embassies all over the world. MAYBE that will move him to action.
Take them all off the public dole, including their so-called "rabbis," and force them to contribute something constructive to society for a change.
need to be arrested for incitement
