France implores Moscow to cancel sale of missiles to Iran

French message to Russia is second time in two weeks that Paris has backed Israel on Iran.

By Barak Ravid Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu France Russia Israel news

France called on Russia Thursday not to complete the sale of advanced air defense missiles to Iran.

Meanwhile in Israel, the dust has not yet settled over the secret visit of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Moscow on Monday, reportedly over the same issue. Thursday, the Russian daily Kommersant quoted Kremlin sources as confirming Netanyahu's visit to the Russian capital.

The newspaper added that Netanyahu's visit was meant to update Russian officials on Israel's intentions to move toward "action" in its handling of the Iranian nuclear issue, as a result of new intelligence on Tehran's program.

The Prime Minister's Bureau continued to refuse comment on Netanyahu's visit to Moscow.

France's statement was made in view of a similar Israeli request made earlier, and probably repeated by Netanyahu during his Moscow visit. A spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry told reporters that France is in regular contact with Russia and has expressed concern about the export of such a weapons system to Iran, which Paris believes would undermine stability in the Middle East.

The French diplomat stressed the fact that United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1747 and 1737 call on the international community to avoid the sale of arms to Iran, either directly or indirectly.

As far as France is concerned, the diplomat said, there is an absolute embargo on the sale of arms to Iran.

The French message to Russia is the second time in two weeks that Paris has backed Israel on Iran.

One thing that can't be argued is S-300, the weapon in question, is purely defensive, it is an air defense missile. For crying out loud what gives Israel right for two independent nations to buy and sell such defensive weapons? Then go as far pirating a ship trying to prevent it. Talk about arrogance. Maybe Netanyahu, the jewish boy genius, went to Russia to explain himself in another ill conceived mess he created for himself. And by the way give me a break on France , another nut runs that country.

You need to read Article 25 and Article 41 of the Charter: the former obliges all states to carry out a DECISION of the UNSC, and the latter empowers the UNSC to impose sanctions to enforce its DECISIONS. Key word: DECISION. Now read Res 1747, where the UNSC "decides" that nobody can take delivery of weapons made *BY* Iran, but it only "calls upon" states not to sell weapons *TO* Iran. Get it? The former is a "decision", and so is binding. The latter merely "calls upon", and any state is entitled to ignore that call. So Russia can sell any weapon that it wants to Iran, and it isn't violating that resolution.

Seems you are unaware of Jewish history versus Jewish folklore. Given their history, what you spout is doubtful. Better wait until the fat lady sings on the matter as that land has been emptied time and time again by THE God for the unspeakable crimes those living there committed, and apparently are still commiting. If the Israelis believed what you posted, they would not worry about Iran or anybody else. Why are they worried? Because they know their history and you do not. The land of Israel will remain but the question is who will be its inhabitants.

so that the price of oil will appreciate. An Israeli attack on the mullahs would do wonders to spike arms sales to muslim nations while increasing oil recipts. The soviets, i mean Russians have no scruples. Once a barbarian, always a barbarian - no wonder they are respected in the middle east.

OK so the opposition was tortured and killed. I know..Women do not have equal rights, Children are hung from cranes, the thought Police are everywhere, Ahmadinejad holds a Holocaust Cartoon Competition to demonstrate his skills as a Diplomat, a Holocaust Conference is held to debate the actuality of the Holocaust which Ahmedinejad denies ever happened, the rhetoric from the mental midget consists of reference to Israelis as bacteria and viruses. With their proxy armies in Hezbollah and Hamas Ahmadinejad threatens to Wipe Israel off the Map, demonstates his new arsenal of rockets while his people suffer the indignation of being ruled by a bunch of lunatic Mullahs. But Hey, when it comes to the possible anhilation of Israelis..."all is fair in Love and War?" BTW For all people who question things like Israeli response, Air etc.. Fundamentalism sometimes can't be argued away rationally.

you seem to forget that by all odds, Israel should exist, much less flourish. The reason why is simple yet, you couldn't grasp the concept if you lived to be as old as the hills.. Let's call it a clash of the G-ds. It would seem Israel's G-d is the winner. No doubt. Israel isn't in jeopardy, it's her enemies who are. I hope Israel does destroy Iran and do the world a service. The Iranians must feel that way too. So many are jailed, raped, and murdered for they hate their regime's demonic behavior towards them the people of Iran. Ask one. Israel will flatten Iran, if she chooses, not the other way around. Her track record is the proof.

to purchase items to compete w/ Iran? Or, a very stiff warning to 'beware of your own people being "wiped off the face of the map"? Time will tell, maybe Russia will sell Iran duds, take the money and laugh all the way to the bank? Russia always plays both sides against the other, while she seems more than anxious to make a buck off of misery. Wonder how Russia would feel if Iran pointed the nukes at Russia? It could happen.

the American hostages, we don't. Iran is threatening her neighbors w/ nuclear arms, I'd call that more than aggressive. She's jailed, raped, beaten and killed many Iranian protesters of the election. In short, Iran's gone crazier than ever before. The mad mullah's want blood and , unfortunately, it will be the blood of their own people first, if they are allowed to further their sick ambitions. Iran reminds me of the ape in "jungle Book." Apes can't handle fire, they will get burned beyond recognition. Their own people would gladly murder them w/ their own hands. I have Iranian friends, and they could tell you horror stories you don't read in the media. Iran will be attacked, it's just a matter of when.

there will be a war. And Iran will get the worst of it. Russia has no conscience, she's broke. Iran, on the other hand, still has the cash to purchase weapons and supplies for their goals of mass destruction upon Israel first, Europe second, and the USA third. Either stop them now, or face stopping them later at the peril of many more lives than now.

France should know by now that the cold war is really alive and well. Russia will do all in its power to weaken the United States and other Western nations. As is obvious from the French reaction, Iran is considered a significant threat by European powers. The fact that Russia is willing to violate UNSCR's to which it signed on is of great significance in itself. It shows a total contempt for the Obama administration and for the West in general.

Why should the Iranians not be provided the weapons to deter Israeli aggression, they have never attacked anyone or occupied anyone as those who oppose this sale have regularly proven they do. Israel has been threatening to attack Iran for years, a reckless move the Israelis are known for that would destabilize the entire region for years, so if anything the sale would do nothing but help ensure peace.

Russian technicians are helping the Iranians build reactors and selling them billions of dollars in weapons. Why on earth would they care what the Israelis or French have to say. Israel's only concern is the killing of Russian nationals when it bombs Iranian facilities. Its probably given the kremlin a general warning to get their citizens out of Iran if they don't want to be in harms way.

In fact no nation (including Israel and USA) have the right to interfere in other nation's relations. Be like the Swiss and Irish - REMAIN NEUTRAL!

As France took part in israeli aggression and he desire to conquer in 1956. As France initiated to struck severely in annihilating a glimpse of balance of power by providing israeli aggressors with the atomic plant in Dimona in 1958, France is continuing to support colonialism by trying to prevent to reach a mutual deterrence in the ME by intervening in an arms deal between Rusia and Iran. As France is recalling two UN rsolutions, I would advice France to stick first to the implementation of numerous UN resolutions concerning israeli behaviour, which were all ignored by Israel. So France, shut up and accept finally that you lost Algeria

...the national drill Israel recently had simply did not do enough to drive home to the average Israeli that this time would be different. Instead of some little homemade rockets falling almost all outside some sleepy far off town, real missiles would be really raining down on Israel, maybe even chemical weapons, on the day after any Israeli attack on Iran. The world has not quite yet woken up to just what is at stake if Israel was to go it alone and neither apparently is your average Israeli or their "supporters." The S-300 missiles are defensive. Iran has legitimate security needs. Hopefully Johnboy will weigh in on whether there is a UN resolution violation by Russia delivering the S-300 weapons system to Iran.

...because apparently it would mess up Israel's offensive against Iran. Iran has every right to protect itself from continued threats by a rogue state with undeclared nukes. And Russia is in no mood to listen to Israel at the moment; they're not on board with new oil sanctions against Iran either. So one must assume then, that the new information mentioned in this article that was supposedly provided to the Russians was met with the same disdain as it was when Israel tried to influence the US with it. Face it, it's Game Over. Iran will have the bomb if they want it, they won't fire it on Israel, just by it's presence it will certainly calm down all those threats from Israel all the time against Iran though...

Why does Russia sell missiles? For profit. It's business. The manufacture of missiles and other munitions, are a businesses from which Russia derives substantial income. Want to dissuade them from selling to Iran? Replace that income. Outbid Iran for the same product or make a deal where you buy some products from Russia that would yield the same income to Russia as the sale of missiles to Iran would. That should do it.
