Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering transferring the responsibility for the fire and rescue services to the Public Security Ministry from the Interior Ministry, his office said.
The Public Security Ministry said the prime minister would present the cabinet a proposal on the matter within 10 days, for the cabinet to approve within a few weeks.
The Public Security Ministry said the time had come for all of Israel's emergency services, including the Magen David Adom ambulance service, to fall under the ministry's auspices.
Interior Minister Eli Yishai, who is currently responsible for the fire services, also supports the move.
The issue had been discussed many times, and now after the Mount Carmel fire, during which Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch was praised for managing the emergency services, the change is likely.
On Sunday, the cabinet approved an exemption from conducting tenders for the operations needed to rebuild and aid the areas damaged by the conflagration. The cabinet aims to speed up the rehabilitation process, reduce bureaucracy and return those suffering from the fire to a normal life quickly as possible.
