Environment Ministry / Small budget for big plans
New Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) was involved in the campaigns against setting up the coal power station in Ashkelon and for building bicycle lanes and animal rights. This ministry is frequently on a collision course with other ministries, whose development initiatives harm the environment.
The ministry's budget is a meager NIS 240 million and it is critically short of professional staff, especially in legislation and enforcement. It remains to be seen whether Erdan will avoid filling the ministry with party activists. His main challenges will be implementing the clean air law, due to come into effect within two years, and regulating waste management.
