Elkin may compromise on vetting of justices
'If the hearing is held by the Judicial Appointments Committee and the protocols are made public, I will not insist on having the Constitution Committee conduct it,' says MK Zeev Elkin.
Following widespread public, political and legal objections to a draft law giving the Knesset Constitution Committee the power to vet Supreme Court appointments, coalition chairman MK Zeev Elkin (Likud ), one of the bill's sponsors, said he is willing to seek a compromise.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided on Sunday to postpone the vote on the controversial bill, which some Likud ministers also objected to.
On Monday, Elkin told Haaretz he would agree to a compromise saying the hearing for Supreme Court candidates would be held by the Judicial Appointments Committee rather than the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee.
"If the hearing is held by the Judicial Appointments Committee and the protocols are made public, I will not insist on having the Constitution Committee conduct it. To me, the transparency principle is more important than the platform," Elkin said.
The bill, co-sponsored by Elkin and MK Yariv Levin (Likud ), was scheduled to be voted on by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Sunday. Elkin said on Monday that he had persuaded a majority of the ministers to vote for the bill.
On Sunday morning, at the Likud ministers' meeting, Netanyahu, who had objected to a similar bill in the past, asked Elkin to put the debate on the bill back by a week.
Since the beginning of the week the public objection to the bill has increased and Elkin's associates fear that now it would be impossible to muster a majority for it.
Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar, the strongest opposer to Elkin and Yariv's bill, has suggested in the past that the Judicial Appointments Committee hold a hearing for Supreme Court candidates.
Likud sources said on Monday that if the bill is redrafted along these lines, Sa'ar and other Likud ministers who oppose the bill in its original version, are likely to rescind.
