Education Min. backs away from chief scientist over evolution remarks
Scientist who made statements dismissing evolution and global warming has been asked to clarify his position.
By Or Kashti Tags: Israel newsEducation Minister Gideon Sa'ar found statements dismissing evolution and global warming made by the ministry's chief scientist over the weekend to be unacceptable, senior sources at the ministry said Tuesday.
Ahead of a request by MKs to discuss the matter in the Knesset, one of the senior sources at the Education Ministry said that chief scientist Dr. Gavriel Avital had been asked to clarify his position.
Also Tuesday, the National Academy of Sciences agreed to adhere to an Education Ministry request to delay any special statement criticizing Avital. Sources at the ministry said that the statements of the chief scientist were "unacceptable for the minister, and that is an understatement."
Three days ago, one of Sa'ar's aides sent a letter to Eyal Morag, whose blog, the Black Butterfly Effect, publicized Avital's statements.
"The statements of the chief scientist of the Education Ministry reflect only his personal views and do not reflect the policy of the ministry, those heading it and the professionals in charge [of the said] subjects," the aide wrote.
A source at the ministry said that the letter was in essence a vote of no confidence in Avital.
Avital was appointed to the post three months ago and he is the first chief scientist at the Education Ministry to be selected from a field other than education. A specialist in aerodynamics, Avital is a member of Likud and was on the party's list of candidates during the 2006 Knesset elections.
Earlier this week Haaretz reported on Avital's statements on evolution and the role of humans in global warming.
"If textbooks state explicitly that human beings' origins are to be found with monkeys, I would want students to pursue and grapple with other opinions. There are many people who don't believe the evolutionary account is correct," Avital said over the weekend.
Commenting on global warming Avital said in the past that "all the signs of a fanatic faith are there [among green groups], radicalism and a great deal of hatred."
In response to a question on whether he recycles he said: "I try to put plastics in the regular trash. The earth is not being destroyed. God has promised us ... and the influence of humans is minor."
Since the report in Haaretz, the Education Ministry instructed Avital not to give interviews. However, one of the religious internet sites said it had spoken with Avital "who instructed us to read his articles and said that he stands behind his statements."
Avital refused to comment.

To say it short, intelligent design is not science. If you like it to get it in to schools, it should be in the religion-classes. To have the person responsible to science, pardon this is absurd. Only fundamental Christians, Muslims and Jewish small circles, do support these ideas. If any analogy should be given, the theory is more like you have some small wrong misspellings in the Odyssey of James Joyce. Soon they will be identified and the theory will be perfected.
I agree with Avital's remarks regarding evolution and global warming. Hurray for truth and courage! Everything in operational science points to special creation. Even Darwin said his theory was dead if fossil transitional forms could not be located. There should be billions of them. Where are they?? They don't exist. What Genesis predicts is exactly what we see today.."after their own kind".
You have 2 choices, believe man who lies and does not know what he is talking about, or believe God who never lies and was there in the beginning - only a Fool would believe evolution.
It was not Charles Darwin's Theory, it was his grandfather Erasmus Darwin. The Tree of Man was part of Evolution with white races at the top and black races at the bottom. They do not teach this today but is part of the Theory of Evolution. Scientists who disagreed saying Global Warming was not caused by human beings were threatened with losing their careers, Research Funds. So we know who is telling the TRUTH when they have to make threats.
the è-days creation is also only based on faith alone.
When summer comes to the Northern Hemisphere, the issue of global warming can be verified by the status of melting icebergs in the Arctic. Already there is an opening in the ice in the Northwest Passage above Canada that is allowing ship movement for the first time in human knowledge. Scientists say the Greenland icebergs are melting from the bottom up. If this is so, how can anyone refute global warming?
Should not be a problem at all to prove it. Evolve a man. Use whatever raw materials you choose. Why do you'll expect me to take your theory on faith alone?
I can just picture evolution and climate change skeptics running to their doctors to fix any little physical ailment they have. But the same people who trust science with their lives without a second thought won't believe in evolution or climate change because it's not convenient for them to believe in it.
As a scientist, Dr, Avital has an absolute responsibility to understand and correctly portray the claims of evolutionists even (or especially!) when he attacks them. Evolutionists do not claim that man descended from monkeys, but rather that both descended from a common ancestor. It may be the fault of the translation, but it sounds as if Dr, Avital is trying to fudge that distinction, This is all the more reprehensible, since the primary argument against evolution (the understanding that our forefathers had of the Word of G-d) does not depend in any way on such a misrepresentation.
You are and the minister are classic examples of history deniers. I know you won't read it but Richard Dawkins latest book "The Greatest Show On Earth" is a must read and the proof is overwhelming that evolution is a fact. You probably have a hard time believing that the human race is one too!
It is good to be reminded why we need scientists, that there are people like you incapable of understanding scientific reasoning. I recommend reading Darwin's "The Origin of Species". It is slow but conclusive. But, hey, why should you? You haven't read it, but you know it's untrue, and you're happy to disbelieve all the scientists in the world. Your privilege: but don't put in for a job as Chief Scientist in any country which takes knowledge seriously. But maybe you'd have a chance in Israel.
... it was only the flood of protests from all of Israel's higher education institutions that stirred this Education Min to second thoughts... ... it was the "chief scientist's" political views that got him into this job in the first place... ... the "chief scientist's" scientific cv was of no consequence...
Let the "scientists" prove it. Start with a single celled creature or with any animal. No need to start off from fluids. Evolve a man from that. Take as much time as you need, use whatever radiation you desire. When you show me the man that you grew from that you will have proved your case. Until then you simply have an unproved theory.
Bring in an educated man who has a slightly different orientation- and the less educated educators panic! You can't think that way! Our ancestors were monkeys and our behavior proves it! We have too many committees / programs & money budgeted to control global warming and can't stop it now. these improperly educated educators and acting more like braying asses than descendants from monkeys! It seems some of G-ds chosen are dozin...on the job.
