Corrie's sister to Haaretz: U.S. encouraged family to sue Israel

Sister of killed U.S. activist Rachel Corrie speaks to Haaretz as trial over Corrie's death begins.

By Akiva Eldar Tags: Gaza Israel news

This is Sarah Corrie Simpson's first visit to Israel. Her younger sister, Rachel Corrie, was killed by an Israel Defense Forces bulldozer in Gaza in 2003, at the age of 23. Now, the family is suing the state in the Haifa District Court.

"I'm glad the day is finally here, that the eyewitnesses are having a chance to talk in a court of law," she said in an interview with Haaretz on Thursday. "It's been seven long years."

The witnesses, who include Rachel's colleagues in the left-wing International Solidarity Movement, say Rachel climbed atop a mount of dirt to be sure the driver could see her, Simpson said. When he nevertheless kept coming at her, she tried to flee, but tripped and fell. "The bulldozer driver kept driving with the blade down, pushing the dirt over Rachel, and stopped when her body was under the cab."

"My father served in the military in Vietnam and was responsible for bulldozer operations," Simpson added. "He said there is no way that what happened to Rachel would have happened on his watch."

She rejects the IDF's claim that the area was an active combat zone. The witnesses claim no shots were being fired, she said, so the army could have stopped the operation and removed the demonstrators. But in any case, she added, international law requires soldiers to try to protect civilians even in a war zone.

What brought Rachel, a girl from a good family in Washington state, to the town of Rafah, on the Gaza-Egypt border?

According to Simpson, the September 11, 2001 terror attacks pushed Rachel into political activism. She wanted "to find out what was going on in the world, especially in the Middle East." She studied Arabic and began meeting with peace activists, including former Israeli soldiers. She wanted to understand America's role in the Middle East.

Rachel was a pacifist and a pluralist, Simpson added, her views informed by growing up in a Christian family with Jewish, Sikh, Hindu and Muslim in-laws.

After Rachel's death, Simpson said, "our lives changed instantly." Her father quit his job, and she herself has devoted herself fully to the political and legal effort to force the IDF to take responsibility for Rachel's death. Her goal, she said, is to ensure "that something like this will never happen again to any civilian ... whether Israeli, Palestinian or internationals."

Though the Military Police investigated Rachel's death, neither the family nor the American authorities consider the probe credible.

"There are pieces of evidence we have never been given," Simpson said. For instance, out of about six hours of video, in color, with complete audio, the family received "14 minutes of tape, a grainy black copy, with incomplete audio."

Would you want to meet the bulldozer driver?

"Yes, I would. Ultimately, in order to have any kind of restorative healing process occur, I need to be able to hear directly from him what happened that day and how he feels about it. As well, I hope he would be able to hear and somehow understand the impact this has had on my life and the life of my family. A credible investigation is important ... but in the end, it is also important that my family and the man who killed Rachel look each other in the eyes. This would be the most difficult and painful thing I can imagine doing, but it's something I feel is extremely important. But I have no control over this, the Israeli government won't release his name."

Asked whether the family was getting support from the U.S. government, Simpson said it was a U.S. government official who first encouraged them to sue the Israeli government.

The family has met with many senior American officials, she added, and more than 70 congressmen signed a letter demanding a serious investigation.

Letter to Rachel Corrie's Parents in Haifa Terrorist attacks and Katyushas and now Haifa is about to become the victim of yet another indignity. It is to be the scene for a legal assault by the parents of Rachel Corrie. The Corries are now suing the State of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces in Israeli court. They and their Arab lawyer, Hussein Abu Hussein, a radical activist (involved in the movement for a world boycott of Israel), filed a civil suit in Haifa court and the first hearing is scheduled for March 10. Ironically, the Corries were themselves briefly kidnapped in Gaza by Hamas terrorists in January 2006, when they were in town to show the local jihadis their support. Palestinian gunmen burst into a Rafah house early Wednesday and tried to kidnap the parents of Rachel Corrie, who was killed in 2003 as she protested the impending demolition of a house in the southern Gaza town, according to a witness. The five gunmen appeared to be affiliated with the Fatah mov

I think the IDF messed up on this one; I don't think it was intentional. I think it was brutally careless. I think that Israelis are scarred by what they have been through - what the jews have been through for thousands of years- and now what they go through daily in terms of the constant hatred of the countries around them. Because of this they are always in danger of turning carelessly brutal. We here in the US don't factor all of this in in our assessments of Israel, I think. It is not a sitation people living in the USA can relate to. Lisa

Janice, aside from your flawed logic, your post indicates a strong anti-Israel bias in the first place. At least be honest enough to admit that from the start. Anyone who deliberately goes into a war zone - and that's exactly what Rachel Corrie did - has to understand the risks involved. Many civilians get killed in war zones: Palestinians and Jews, Englishman during the London Blitz in WWII, Vietnamese and Cambodians, etc. The difference is that ISM is standing up for terrorists, not a people. She identified with their cause - the destruction of the State of Israel. As far as I'm concerned, she got what she deserved, because she by her very actions announced to the world that she was one of them.

The US can not stop the senseless killing in the US. It will only get worse as it slowly transforms itself into Mexico. US has no future and much of the world doesn't. Those parts that are not becoming Mexico are becoming Islam and this woman, died to help turn a small, Jewish part of the world, into that Islam. She died, trying to get Jews killed, because she hated Jews and those who support her, poorly hide their own ulterior motives. They will be so busy trying to kill Jews, they will not even notice when their Back has been Broken.

"If you stand in the middle of a busy highway, is it a driver`s fault if you get run over?" Maybe not in LA, where you say you are. In most places in the USA, yes. Drivers are responsible for what they run into. The standard excuse is "She just jumped out of nowhere in front of me when it was too late and I couldn't possibly stop. I had no idea she was going to jump out there. I thought it was safe." In general, if you hit something on the road that isn't moving, it's your fault. Do not drive faster than you can see to stop. For bulldozers it's different, of course. They have to operate blind, so they always have the right of way. Anything that gets in front of a moving bulldozer is fair game. Right? that's how it works, isn't it? The bulldozer operator doesn't know what he's pushing on, and he doesn't know where he's pushing it except by distant landmarks. He literally can't see where he's going. I've never done it, but I've been told.

Boycott military aid and your going to hurt the US economy and possibly cost jobs. Military aid is a subsidy to the US arms industry which the government is not allowed to subsidize directly so they do it indirectly via military aid which they give to alot of countries. You add up the number of countries getting military aid your talking about billions of dollars in subsidies for the arms industry. Which also has lots of string attched like the country is obligated to buy the majority of its weaponry from the US ( stuff it pays cash for ) Its like getting a discount because Israel still spends billions of its own money on US weapons. The palestinians get more in direct economic assistance from the US than Israel. For years now Israel has got very little economic assistance just the military aid, loan guarentees which Israel honours & sometimes the US will part finance specific projects like Arrow. Take away the military aid & the US will have less influence over Israel not more.

Rachel Corrie was a fool and she is the only one to blame for what happened. You don't stand in the wat of an armored D9 bulldozer. These are not the little dozers they use when they are digging the streets to lay pipes etc. The things have limited vision and are not fast & manouverable race cars with large 360 degree vision at the best of times but with the armor plating protecting the driver it limits his vision even further. Just entering a warzone was reckless because there are lots of ways she could have been killed or injured just being there but standing in front of a bulldozer like she did was pure stupidity. Rachel Corrie was an idiot but ISM should not encourage their activists to carry out reckless stunts. If they want to do something useful hold peaceful protests don't send your people into warzones and do stupid things like standing in front of bulldozers in what they know in advance is a gesture that will achieve nothing

According to the ISM, the picture of Rachel Corrie, to which you refer, was not taken at the time of the accident. The picture was taken earlier, and the bulldozer isn't even the same one. The driver in the picture is probably not the same driver. So you can't say that at the time of the accident "Rachel [was] standing on a mound of dirt dressed in a bright orange vest, calling out to the D9 driver with her megaphone to stop. We see the D9 at a distance of between 10 and 20 meters. The driver is visible through the front window." There was no picture taken while the accident was taking place.

Rachel was not killed in the west bank. She was killed in Gaza, working with Hamas trying to keep the Israelis from destroying a tunnel used to smuggle arms from Egypt to Gaza. If she had tried to sue in an American court the case would have been thrown out before it started. She had assumed the risk of being injured, she was guilty giving her the benefit of the doubt of contributory negligence. She was not an innocent bystander but an activist who was cooperating with terrorists.

The driver is visible through the front window. I do not believe your assertion that the driver did not know the ISM activists were there. It is much more likely that as he approached and Rachel went out of sight, hidden behind the big scoop, the driver ASSUMED that she would run away. He pushed on reckless indifference, displaying the kind of careless behaviour we see so often of the Israeli army in the Occupied Territories. After having seen the many hateful responses here on Talkback condemning Rachel as a 'terrorist supporter' the above scenario is much more likely. Foreigners in the Gaza Strip are few and far between. That THREE of them, Rachel Corrie, Tom Hurndall and James Miller were killed as a result of Israeli army actions within a short space of time is no coincidence.

And, because the bulldozer driver was not required to have motor vehicle insurance, even though my car was totalled, I received nothing! Rachel Corrie put her own life in danger, possibly stupidly, perhaps knowingly. I would say to her family only, I am sorry for your loss.

There is no way that the CAT D9 driver would have seen her and less so would he have buried her alive. Its a preposterous accusation. The fact that her father drove Bulldozers in Vietnam means absolutely nothing. Unless he was under constant fire by the Vietcong, which he would then understand the difficulties of driving an unarmed machine in the face of the enemy. Get my drift...? The case has become more of a political theater funded by some obscure group. My condolences to her family. For she was brave, no doubt, however extremely reckless, she played "chicken" in a war zone. Good day.

If one is supporting "human rights", then why is one supporting the creation of yet another abusive Arab regime in the region? The Palestinians are known human rights abusers - not just their war crimes against Israel (sorry folks, but bus and restaurant bombings, thousands of missiles fired at civilians - even Goldstone called them war crimes), but against their own people. How and why was Corrie recruited to support Fatah and its known anti-human rights policies? What is the ISM and how is it funded? Is it really an organ of Fatah? Who from the ISM sent foreign nationals in harm's way? Who are the directors of the ISM and where does its funding come from? If you're asking hard questions, then let's get some hard answers. From what we know, the ISM is nothing more than a Fatah organ used to try and generate foreign "martyrs" in its war against Israel. Corrie may have had good intentions, but she was duped. Who are the ISM handlers who put her in danger?

"The ultimate irony is that the family is able to launch a lawsuit in an Israeli court - what are the chances of Israeli citizens launching lawsuits against Hamas, Hezbollah or Fatah for the (too numerous to count) deliberate acts of terror against Israeli citizens? Rachel Corrie was an idealistic young person who was used as a pawn by the Palestinians. She, the ISM and the Palestinians put herself in that situation, so the blame starts there. IMHO" Why is that ironic Mark? Poor Jewish people never receive justice. Well Mark you are wrong. Jewish Americans who were in Israel at the time of a terror attack have taken Iran to court IN THE USA, attempting to get Iranian artifacts on loan to US Universities as payment for their alleged injuries. Do you think its only jewish people that deserve justice or is that just reserved for when jews are hurt or killed?

She tempted fate and fatal consequences caught up to her. As #7 has observed, many young people do not have the maturity or see the whole picture when in their youthful energy/zeal stand up for the wrong side. The so called "Palestinians" are 100% Arab and if the rich ARAB states with over 99% of middle east land and oil riches, DO NOT want a solution for their fellow Palestinian Arab brothers, but merely use them as pawns, then let the story play out accordingly (with God at the helm). The fact is if Rachael Corrie had consulted a map and seen how TEENY TINY is Israel surrounded by a SEA OF HOSTILE ISLAMIC STATES (from Mauritania to the west of Israel, to Kazakhstan at the east end), then maybe she would still be alive today. Here's the map: http://www.masada2000.org/geography.html Which people/nation is really being threatened????

While I disagree with her politics I did respect her courage. The house being bulldozed was being used as cover for a smuggling tunnel in Gaza. Since weapons are brought in this way and then used on Jewish civilians I can't say I agreed with her reason for being there. It troubles me that the first photo released(by the AP Press) was of Rachel by the bulldozer with a Megaphone and was phony Pal propaganda. It gave the impression that she must have been seen and heard, but later it was admitted that the photo was taken hours before...not moments before...the incident. I would like to hear the drivers testimony and see the unedited tape as well. I simply don't trust the testimony of a bias group(International Solidarity Movement) of witnesses. To the family of Rachel I am sorry for your loss of your daughter who had the courage of her convictions. She proved it by putting herself in harms way, few people possess that kind of strength.

from wikipedia (early) witness accounts: she was climbing a pile of debris moved by the bulldozer, directly in front of the blade. when climbing down she slipped and fell. the questions: did she make it so much up the pile, that she looked into the cabin ? if so, for how long did she remain there ? then the driver might have seen her - but also he might have looked somewhere else at this moment. i think, the prosecution claims, she did NOT make it up to the cabin window, the witnesses say the opposite. what is very good with reports from court, when people are quoted. also, it would be helpful, to have the wording from the witness accounts and what exactly their lawyer claims (that was all wednesday or yesterday ?)

Looking back on my own involvement my only regret is that I wish I would have taken a step back and looked more closely at what the North Vietnam communists represented. Not just the end result but the full picture of Stalinism and its "achievements" In the same way those who so passionately campiaign for Palestinian rights need to carefully think about the end result of their campaigning.

Seems the story changed from what I last read. According to the other eyewitnesses from her group, Corrie stood her ground and the bulldozer knocked her down and then ran over her. Today I read that she tried to get away and tripped. These are conflicting details. That is not to say that she deserved to die but if she stood tall to be seen and then she fell away from the sightline of the driver..then maybe it was an accident.

Unfortunately, all the right-wing idiots that post here will never understand these concepts of universality. They just repeat whatever their dear leaders say and dont question anything. International Solidarity Movement is a notorious ant-Semitic organization that brainwash poor educated students in US and around the world and send them to Israel to commit illegal activity in the democratic and independent state. They violated Israel Law and International Law. The only who are responsible for her death those who brainwashed sent her and sent in Israel and her parents who did not teach her to respect laws of independent countries. I am sure, nobody send their children to demonstrate in Iran, North Korea, or China, or even Britain against Falklands occupation. Israel has the same degree of independence and this is Israel land for over 3500 years, much longer than America has land of American Indians

Rachel's family is doing what any normal family does. They want to know exactly what happened and leave no stone unturned to get justice for Rachel. In a state governed by the rule of law one can expect justice to be served. The big question is: can the Corries get justice in Israel where occupier's law rules. I wish the Corrie family all the best in their endeavour to get justice. I was absolutely apalled to read the vile Talkbacks with yesterday's article "Trial over death of US activist Rachel Corrie begins". If you do not agree with Rachel's politics, at least show some measure of respect. What these disgusting Talkbacks made clear for all the world to see is that there is no dearth of rightwing Israel apologists who hate activists like Rachel enough to run them over with a bulldozer. Was the army driver operating the D9 thinking along the same line when he saw Rachel standing on the mound of dirt in her bright orange vest calling out through her bullhorn?

Is what are the operating procedures for the use of the D9 bulldozer in the West Bank, and does it differ from when it is used in Israel proper. The crux of the matter is if the IDF halts operating the bulldozer if the protestors are Jewish or not. If the answer is yes then they knew that operating the bulldozer with people stood around is dangerous, but continued anyway. Which would be prove of a total disregard for safety, and is essentially manslaughter.
